Daniella is.......the mayor of Miami-Dade County. Born in New York City in 1955, she had the opportunity to travel Brazil and Chile in her youth, before going to high school in Brooklyn, and studying psychology at Yale University. Having helped her mom in the slums of Rio de Janeiro as a little girl, she realized that community welfare was always her main ambition, and went on to graduate school at Colombia Law with a focus on Social Work. After meeting her husband in Atlanta, and relocating to Miami over 40 years ago, she eventually founded Catalyst Miami, an organization focused on helping low and middle income families through education and advocacy. There she launched the Prosperity Campaign to help those same people increase their income and savings, and gain more financial independence. Always looking for ways to better the community, Daniella shares with us her initiatives this year for more affordable housing, more walkable urban life, and more sustainable local trade employment. Down to volunteer more this year? Listen in for some great opportunities and the Mayor's very own suggestions.

"The greatness of a community is most accurately measured by the compassionate actions of its members." – Coretta Scott King In April 2019 Commissioner Levine Cava announced she was running for Mayor of Miami-Dade County. Deeply concerned by the prosperity gap, threat of sea level rise, and widespread distrust in County government, she set out to be #AMayorWhoCares about these and many other pressing issues facing our County. Her vision focuses on building efficient and effective county-wide transit, solving the affordability crisis, bringing quality jobs, addressing gun violence in our communities, preparing for sea level rise, and improving residents’ quality of life. As #AMayorWhoCares, Commissioner Levine Cava is committed to creating a County government that works for all. Daniella Levine Cava has been a tireless advocate for South Florida residents and communities for almost 40 years. She came to South Florida in 1980 and finished her last year of law school at University of Miami, to join her husband, Dr. Robert Cava, a Miami native. Daniella and Robert raised two children, Eliza and Edward, in Miami-Dade. After a decade of work as an attorney with Legal Services of Greater Miami and the Guardian Ad Litem program, in 1996 Commissioner Levine Cava founded the Human Services Coalition, now known as Catalyst Miami. Catalyst empowers low- and moderate-income families with the tools necessary to lift them out of poverty. Since her historic victory in 2014, Commissioner Levine Cava has put her experience and passion to work as a powerful voice on the County Commission for a range of quality of life, accountability, economic and environmental concerns. She has championed women’s issues by taking the bold step to pass legislation that made Miami-Dade County the first County in the United States to sign on to the UN Convention on the Elimination of Discrimination Against Women. As a result of the legislation, the County has adopted several polices to ensure equal pay and equity for women in County contracting and County hiring.

Jeremie Greer, VP, Policy and Research, at Prosperity Now, gets real  from the onset of our conversation at Podcast Village. Poverty cannot be overcome by personal discipline alone. It requires systemic change, which Prosperity Now, and its Network of Champions, community-based nonprofits, advocate for using research, data and on-the-ground experience. We discuss Prosperity Now's champions, including Catalyst Miami, the necessity to grapple with and address the Racial Wealth Gap, the promise of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau and the Trump Administration's unbridled efforts to dismantle the agency. Jeremie talks about the power of the constituent voice and the responsibility of national nonprofits to mobilize and harness that voice on Capitol Hill. To many residents in Miami, climate change is personal.  To Zelalem Adefris, climate change is her life's work. Building on her passion for public health and environmental activism, Zelalem moved to Miami a few years ago to become the Climate Resilience Program Manager at Catalyst Miami. Zelalem works to educate residents on the local impacts of climate change, connecting climate change to social justice initiatives and implementing programs that strengthen the resilience  of communities. It's no secret that South Florida is 'ground zero' for rising sea levels and that many scientists predict major flooding and inhabitable communities within this century if drastic measures aren't taken. Catalyst Miami has created CLEAR Miami (Community Leadership on the Environment, Advocacy, and Resilience) to provide the groundwork to bring about change by recruiting educators, leaders and innovators in their own communities and beyond. Participants will learn how to advocate for policies and practices that strengthen the resiliency of Miami communities, educate residents on basic climate science, threats and solutions as well as expose and challenge how poverty and discrimination make communities vulnerable to climate change.  This free leadership training starts on Wednesday, Feb. 7 and runs 11 weeks. We're excited to be participating in the training and hope you will join us.
