Rivka and Frank are joined by Pamela Capalad and Dyalekt, an anti-capitalist artist power couple who co-founded a financial liberation program for creators of color called See Change. The group discusses Sylvester Stallone's 1976 American classic, Rocky, and how its characters and themes are deeply rooted in the fabric of American capitalism, from the glorification of the "pull yourself up by your bootstraps" mentality to the starving artist trope perpetuated by Stallone. They also explore Rocky as the "Great White Hope," examining the triumph of white, working-class individualism in response to the collectivism of the Black Panther Party, the Civil Rights movement, and affirmative action of the era. getshameless.com seechangecommunity.com pocketschange.comcast
Today the podcast is raw and unfiltered and uncensored and unedited. We are going for a walk and we're gonna talk some bombs so put on your earbuds put on your tennis shoes tighten your ponytail and let's go for a walk and talk about why we need to actually make change happen in order to see changes let's go.
Are you desperate to see changes in your life? Do you need to see urgent answers in your family or your health, finances or ministry? You may very well have a desperate need right now. There are so many battles that come up in life, so many challenges. Whether this is in family life or your finances or even in your health. But there is hope for you. There is hope for you even if you've actually had a lot of pain in your life. We see in 1 Chronicles 4:9-10 a well-known prayer from someone whose very life was marked by pain. This was Jabez, his mother had named him saying “I gave birth to him in pain” so all his life was associated with pain. But he came to the point where he'd had enough, and he prayed in desperation to the Lord. Perhaps you can't see how your life can change. But today God wants to show you that no matter your past, your future can be one of blessing, healing, protection, provision and free from pain. We can learn a lot from how Jabez prayed to the Lord despite his painful past and present circumstances. 1. He prayed for God's blessing (1 Chronicles 4:10) 2. He prayed for increase (1 Chronicles 4:10; Ephesians 3:20) 3. He prayed for the presence and favour of God (1 Chronicles 4:10; Exodus 33:14; Joshua 1:5; Nehemiah 9:19-20; John 14:26) 4. He prayed he would be kept free from pain (1 Chronicles 4:10; Luke 8; Isaiah 53:5; Psalm 37:4) Apply 1. He prayed for God's blessing (1 Chronicles 4:10). He took his desperation for a different life to God. He cried out to God for his breakthrough. Jabez was desperate. When you are desperate, you know that it's not your own abilities, strength or power that can change the situation. When you are desperate, you know that you are all out of options other than to go to someone who has the power bring change. Jabez cried out to God and believed that it was God who had the power to bless him. He believed that God could do the changes needed to bring blessing in his life and that God is the source where all blessing comes from. There is nothing wrong with asking for personal blessing! Today you can call out to God in desperation like Jabez did, assured He wants to bless you. 2. He prayed for increase (1 Chronicles 4:10). Jabez wasn't content with the limited prosperity and small portion of blessing he had experienced in his life so far - he knew God had more to give him and he cried out for it. It's time to stop small living and small thinking. Now is the time to start praying bigger prayers. You may be feeling stuck in a small, overcrowded house, thinking how can I possibly move into a bigger house? You may be feeling powerless by thinking about mortgage rates increasing, living costs rising and lots of other limits in your thinking. There may be a problem in having children and you want to see increase in your family. You might have only a small salary and limited responsibility at work. There is hope! It's time to pray that God will increase the size your living accommodation. It's time to pray that God will increase your salary. It's time to pray that God will increase the size of your family and it's time to pray that God will increase the size of your ministry. Do you believe God for miracles and to prosper you in every area of your life? God has BIG things in store for you (Ephesians 3:20). 3. He prayed for the presence and favour of God (1 Chronicles 4:10). Jabez was desperate for the presence of God to be with him. He knew that it was essential to do life with God if he wanted to see his personal circumstances change. The Israelites experienced guidance and favour when they sought and followed the Presence of God (Exodus 33:14; Joshua 1:5). Do you take time every morning to welcome the presence of the living God, your Heavenly Father, as it says in the Hebrew El Shaddai - God Almighty, and seek His hand to be with you? Just as the Israelites were clearly guided by God's presence in the wilderness, so we can be guided by the hand of God in every part of our everyday lives (Nehemiah 9:19-20). God wants you to be guided by His Holy Spirit in everything you do, every day (John 14:26). There is hope! We have not been left alone to struggle in a desperate state, or to try and figure everything out on our own: God's presence can be with us if we cry out to Him for it. As we have more of the Presence of God in our personal lives, we will see how God guides us into the right places at the right time, with the right people and with His ease and blessing. This ushers us into His favour in every other area of our lives. 4. He prayed he would be kept free from pain (1 Chronicles 4:10). Pain is such a familiar reality to many people. And many are very good at hiding it. Maybe you've been harmed by a toxic relationship. Maybe you have pain from repeated disappointments, or experienced pain from bad financial deals and debt. Possibly even in pain over losing a loved one. And of course, there are so many who live with very real physical pain on a daily basis. Maybe you are one of them. Well, many people in the Bible also lived with great pain as the norm in their life. In the New Testament we see the woman with the issue of blood who, as Luke 8 tells us, had lived with this painful and socially crippling condition for 12 years, spending all she had on doctors who couldn't cure her. Yet when she cried out to Jesus, she received her miracle and was instantly healed. Despite his tough start in life, where pain and suffering had been his norm, Jabez knew that the Lord alone could keep him from harm and give him a life that was free from pain. It was God who could change Jabez's very nature and remove pain from his identity. And God can and wants to do it for you too. Perhaps suffering physical and emotional pain has been normal in your life up to now, but through Jesus being wounded at the cross in our place, we can be healed (Isaiah 53:5). There is hope! It is only with God that we can experience freedom from harm and pain. God's love is greater than any love you might have experienced in your life, and He promises you a different future as you depend on Him. Like Jabez, it's time to cry out and to step out in faith that God is doing a new thing in your life, and that the old experiences of pain, harm and suffering and sorrow are in your past - not your future. God granted Jabez's request (1 Chronicles 4:10), and He is ready to grant yours too (Psalm 37:4). Today, whatever your situation, whatever your need, however much pain you're in, you can cry out to the Lord.

Join Audrey and Sarah as they deep dive into a highly relevant theme that's been showing up in both their lives for the past few weeks: what it actually looks like to put in work to see change. Some themes that are covered in this episode: How social media affects confidence of setting long term goals Overcoming the unknowns of change How your inner child belief system affects what you do and don't do And what's even better? They dropped a handful of journal prompts that can help you uncover and bring self awareness around why you might not be seeing change in an area(s) of your life. Why do I think I am finding myself back at the point I was before? Is my resistance to change based on facts or assumptions? Do I not trust or feel capable in my own ability to make change happen? Am I operating based on the skepticism that change can't happen for me even though I want to see change badly? What does being committed in the process of change look like for me? What am I going to do about it? Today, I explored the profound journey of sanctification and faith, drawing from the narrative of Joshua and the Israelites as they prepared to cross the Jordan River into the Promised Land. This story, rich with symbolism, serves as a powerful metaphor for our spiritual journey and the necessity of aligning ourselves with God's will. The sermon began by setting the context of the Israelites' journey. They had been wandering in the wilderness for 40 years due to their lack of faith and constant murmuring against God. This period was meant to be a brief transition, not a prolonged ordeal. The wilderness represents a phase of just enough—where God provides daily but not abundantly. This is contrasted with the slavery in Egypt, a place of not enough, and the Promised Land, a place of abundance. I emphasized the importance of sanctification, using Joshua 3:5 as a pivotal scripture. Sanctification involves setting ourselves apart for God's purpose, allowing Him to work within us to prepare us for the blessings and tasks He has in store. This process is not about achieving perfection through our efforts but about making ourselves available to God's transformative power. The crossing of the Jordan River was highlighted as a critical moment of faith. The river, at flood stage, represented significant obstacles and fears that can seem insurmountable. Yet, it was at this moment that the priests, carrying the Ark of the Covenant, had to step into the raging waters, demonstrating faith before seeing the waters part. This act of faith was crucial for the Israelites to move from a life of mere survival in the wilderness to a life of thriving in the Promised Land. Throughout the sermon, I drew parallels between the Israelites' experiences and our modern spiritual journeys. Just as the Israelites had to physically move into the unknown to reach their promised future, we too are called to step out in faith, leaving behind our comfort zones and trusting in God's guidance and provision. The sermon concluded with a call to action for personal sanctification and faith. By choosing to sanctify ourselves today, we prepare for the wonders God promises to perform in our lives tomorrow. This requires a daily commitment to live by faith, trusting in God's timing and provision, even when the path ahead seems unclear or daunting. ### Key Takeaways 1. **Sanctification as Preparation for Divine Wonders** Sanctification isn't merely a theological concept; it's a daily decision to dedicate oneself wholly to God's service. This dedication allows God to work wonders in and through us, preparing us for greater works and blessings. Just as the Israelites had to sanctify themselves before crossing into the Promised Land, we must prepare our hearts daily for the divine acts God wants to perform in our lives. [09:11] 2. **Faith in Action at the Jordan River** The moment the priests stepped into the Jordan River, their actions mirrored their faith. This teaches us that true faith requires action. It's not enough to believe in God's power; we must demonstrate our faith, especially when faced with challenges that seem insurmountable. Our steps of faith pave the way for miraculous interventions in our lives. [23:05] 3. **The Role of Remembrance in Sustaining Faith** Remembering past deliverances and miracles strengthens our faith and prepares us for future challenges. Just as the Israelites built memorials to remember God's acts, we should regularly recall and celebrate what God has done in our lives. This remembrance helps us to trust in His continued faithfulness and provision. [34:08] 4. **The Importance of Spiritual Leadership and Guidance** Just as Joshua led the Israelites with clear instructions from God, we need spiritual leadership in our lives to guide us through our spiritual journeys. Leaders help us focus on God's presence and ensure we are moving in the right direction. This guidance is crucial in times of uncertainty and transition. [14:17] 5. **Embracing the Wilderness as a Place of Development** The wilderness experience, though challenging, is a vital season of growth and dependency on God. It teaches us resilience and deepens our faith, making us ready for the abundance of the Promised Land. Embracing this season, rather than resisting it, accelerates our spiritual progress and prepares us for future blessings. [05:09]

Keith delves into the psychology behind these mindsets, discussing the influence of self-limiting beliefs, the importance of conviction and alignment with higher principles, and the transformative power of letting go of what no longer serves us. He concludes by emphasizing the importance of faith, continual personal growth, and seeking higher questions to fundamentally change how one perceives and interacts with the world, thereby achieving true success and fulfillment. We couldn't BEE happier to bring you this next episode of SEE Change! On this episode, we welcomed the amazing Brenda Palms Barber, Founder of Sweet Beginnings, Chicago, LLC and CEO and President of North Lawndale Employment Network for a fascinating discussion about honeybees, business, and how the social enterprise she founded almost 20 years ago is changing lives on the West Side of Chicago. She talks us through how she identified the root causes of the extraordinarily high unemployment and chronic poverty levels in this part of Chicago and how she came upon creating this innovative job training and employment program through the art, science, and business of beekeeping and, over time, natural skin care products. The best part about Sweet Beginnings is that it is a market-driven solution to a social issue so in addition to providing fabulous honey and skin care products, they are raising awareness for the issue of mass incarceration through something that is as simple and day-to-day as honey. Although before founding Sweet Beginnings, Brenda did not know anything about beekeeping, her can-do attitude, unwavering determination, and ability to seek out the good in people helped her create and grow it into something way beyond anything she could have imagined. It's a BEEutiful story!Sweet Beginnings now sells honey and skincare products under the name #BeeLove and can be purchased at Mariano's Supermarkets, as well as at hotels, airports, and online. To learn more about Sweet Beginnings and Bee Love products, visit www.beelovebuzz.com.ABOUT R. BONUS: Take Charge of Your Finances | Deliberate Freelancer with Pamela CapaladToday's guest is Pamela Capalad, a certified financial planner and accredited financial counselor in Brooklyn. Pam created this really cool program called Brunch & Budget, which helps people who feel ashamed or embarrassed about money have a safe and friendly place to talk about their finances—over brunch with Pam. I think this is genius. It makes people more comfortable and really open up to Pam, whose mission is to make financial planning as affordable as possible for the communities who need it most.We didn't get into it in this episode, but Pam and her husband teach hip hop and finance workshops to kids, teens and college students across the country through a program called Pockets Change. They also host the Brunch & Budget podcast, where they discuss how personal finance and racial economic justice intersect. And—if that's not enough—they started a financial planning program designed for the needs of people of color called See Change. In this episode, learn how Pam went from working in wealth management to financial planning—first, for her friends. A conversation with a friend led to Pam's business, Brunch & Budget. While the first meeting is usually an in-person brunch, Pam then meets with clients virtually every month to help them put together a financial plan and to actually implement it.Pam goes over the most-asked questions she gets from freelancers, which includes issues related to quarterly taxes and an inconsistent income.Pam also helps freelancers figure out how to raise their rates.Pam gives us the scoop on new IRS rules that benefit freelancers—the IRS won't be charging penalties if you didn't pay your 2018 taxes on time every quarter. And going forward, they're going to less strict about freelancers paying taxes every quarter as long as you get all the taxes paid by January.Pam explains why it's important to build a good relationship with an accountant who works with freelancers.Pam is a big believer in creating a 12-month cash flow projection of how much money you anticipate you will make and what your income goals are. It's important to have monthly, quarterly and annual goals, partly because a freelancer's income can be inconsistent. That cash flow projection will help you notice income patterns as income ebbs and flows throughout the year. Then, you can plan your action steps around your income goals and track and measure whether you're hitting your income goals. She also encourages freelancers to take a VACATION when the months are low.Pam talks about how imposter syndrome relates to money—and sometimes increases as you get more successful. When you are setting your rates, you need to figure out how to take the emotion out of it. Pam admits undervaluing herself when she first started providing her financial planning services. But then Pam took the emotion out of creating her rates by making herself stick to a rule that every time she gained two or three new clients, she had to raise her rates for all future clients. She also recommends coming up with the “least I'm willing to take” rate.If you do take a project below your rate, consider what non-monetary things you can negotiate with the client—a referral, a longer contract, additional projects.Pam helps us figure out how to commit to a savings account. She recommends a “high-yield” savings account so you can gain a bit more interest than what you would at your local bank. Know what your minimum personal expenses and your minimum business expenses are each month. That way when you exceed those, a chunk of that money can go directly into your savings account.Make sure you have a separate savings account just for taxes. That money is not yours. Set aside 25–30 percent of whatever you make and pretend that money doesn't exist. From there, take your monthly inc
Tiffany Valiante, 18, has graduated high school and is on her way to Mercy College in New York. Standing 6 feet 2 inches tall, Valiante is a star athlete, earning a volleyball scholarship. On July 12, 2015, Valiante left her cousin's graduation party. A few hours later, the family learns Valiante has been struck and killed by a train traveling 80mph in a secluded, wooded area just four miles from her home. The death is ruled a suicide by the medical examiner. Valiante's family is fighting that ruling over many issues. First and foremost, Valiante had an intense fear of the dark, meaning there was no way she would walk more than four miles in the dark. Her shoes were found more than a mile from her body, yet her feet were clean. A rape kit was not performed on Tiffany's body. Summary: We're going back in the archives today with an interview from 2020 with the amazing Dawn Walters of The University of Kentucky Dance Team. Dawn's approach to coaching is so relatable and refreshing. She has such genuine advice and a superpower as a coach. We talk about opening the door for more dancers of different genres and backgrounds to join a big university program. She really led us behind the curtain and shared how she runs practices, how she cleans her routines, and even how her coaching style has changed. She was really open with me when we got into some of the hard stuff and we talked about addressing race in the dance team industry and protecting yourself as a coach from that one angry parent who could tear it all down. Dawn was a UK cheerleader and dancer, and she started coaching UK in 2009. She has a long list of accomplishments including national titles, starting her own all-star gym, judging for top competitions, and, of course, just impacting so many young lives through her program at The University of Kentucky. I hope this beautiful interview brings you a dose of motivation and inspiration as we head into competition season. Pull Quotes - Dawn: “So I'm hoping that coaches will now step back and go, “Wow, okay, I was being so strict on that,” and not to be mean but just for sake of going everybody has to wear their hair in a ponytail and in a bun and whatever... Let's take that pressure off of those coaches that go, “But I have to or I'm gonna get a point taken off ‘cause everybody's hair wasn't this way.” ... It felt like I had to have a weave or I had to do this to my hair because otherwise I wouldn't have made the team or I wouldn't have been able to do things or whatever. Hopefully, those things go there. That's what I really hoped that the dialogue and the communication would be there so then your kids of color and your Black kids would feel like, “Wow. I'm accepted.” Key Highlights - [1m 53s] Team Culture [7m 52s] Dawn's Two Teams: The White Squad and The Blue Squad [11m 23s] How Dawn Runs Team Practice [19m 27s] Dawn's Cleaning Style [25m 15s] Go with the Flow!
