Imagine reading the paper and seeing a horrific story about a dog who died after being shot by the police, and inexplicably feeling that the public was being misled, that the dog was not dead, but alive. A former correctional officer and businessman, Charlie Cifferalli was living in Nebraska when we read the story of Star The Dog getting shot in the head by a New York City police officer while she was trying to protect her unhoused guardian. My guest today is Charlie Cifarelli , a stroke survivor, motivational speaker, author, and recipient of a Gold Communication Award. During this amazingly powerful and heartfelt episode, Charlie shares his story filled with love, recovery, and immense strength. He talks about his journey from being a Department of Corrections officer to a private sector business owner, and how the experience gave him knowledge and empathy about the power of words. Additionally, he emphasizes treating inmates with kindness and humanity and the importance of second chances. Here are just a few of the key takeaways of the 1st part of Charlie's interview ....Strokes can affect young and old people, and don't necessarily require pre-existing conditions like AFib, diabetes, high cholesterol, or high blood pressure.Charlie Cifarelli realized their passion for helping others after their experiences with police brutality and time in prison, leading them to become a motivational speaker and author. The importance of treating inmates with kindness and humanity was emphasized by the speaker, who himself is a former correctional officer. He believes that everyone should be treated as a human being, not just someone who has committed a crime.Join Charlie & I in this inspiring episode, and learn more about the power of self-love, second chances, and spiritual growth. *This is our 1st live video recorded in a studio!* In this episode of Your History Your Story, our guest is author, inspirational speaker and passionate animal advocate, Charlie Cifarelli. Charlie will talk about his recently released autobiography “14th & 2nd” and will share stories from his life journey, which brought him from the streets of New York City to the cornfields of Nebraska. Charlie, who experienced childhood abuse, periods of homelessness, battles with addiction and the revolving door of rehab, also experienced a spiritual awakening in an upstate New York monastery. Charlie's journey eventually took him to the mid west, where he become an officer with the Nebraska Department of Corrections. While in that role, he interacted with death row inmates in their final days. Also, while working with the DOC, Charlie used his entrepreneurial skills to found a successful business. However, most significantly, Charlie's life was positively and permanently impacted when he embarked on a mission to rescue a dog named “Star”, who had been shot by an NYPD officer because Star was guarding her homeless owner who was in the midst of a seizure. This is Charlie's story. This week I have the privilege to highlight the incredible story of Charlie Cifarelli. Charlie had everything in life he set out to achieve until one day; his world fell apart over a national story about a dog named Star. What started as a journey to save a dog, in turn, would save him. Star taught Charlie everything he needed to learn about love. Charlie went from having a transactional life with value on useless things and realized what he thought he wanted didn't make him happy. We look for love because we believe it will complete us – but the truth is LOVE is universal. We can be in a relationship or have a dream home or career, yet often, it does not equate to happiness. Charlie share's his tips around having a successful relationship, why comparison is the thief of joy, the value of finding purpose and why having gratitude is most important! Charlie Cifarelli, is an author, motivational speaker, businessman and dog lover, with a focus on rescues, in fact he has seven! In his early twenties he became homeless and addicted to drugs. He went into recovery after being directed to a Monastery where he got clean and sober, finally after numerous attempts. Circumstances led him to the Midwest where he lived in Nebraska for 25 years working at three maximum security prisons. He worked on death row, connecting with the inmates on a deep level - he became the inmates favorite! After seeing enough sadness - he started a trash business with the hopes of having a life of freedom and happiness which only made him miserably comfortable. It wasn't until August 13, 2012 that his world would collide with a dog who was reported to be and killed in New York City by a police officer while protecting her owner – who was homeless. For the first time in Charlie's life he believed in something he couldn't see at the corner of 14th and 2nd. Today, Charlie shares his story of love. Love for his little girl Star “his snoopy” a dog so special - she's on Wikipedia with the likes of Rin Tin Tin and Lassie. Charlie believes love starts in many places and carries over. He'll share how rescuing Star connected him with people globally and how love found him in the most unlikely place on the corner of 14th & 2nd. Tune into this beautiful story of redemption, hope and most importantly love.To find out more about Charlie Cifarelli go to www.charliecifarelli.com for follow on Instagram @charlie_cifarelli or on Facebook under Charlie Cifarelli.
We are constantly evolving and growing day by day. We face many challenges and obstacles in our lives, and sometimes it can feel like we're just trying to survive. It's been said that we all have two lives. The first life is the one we live until we realize we have a second life. The second life is the one we live after discovering our purpose to lead a fulfilling life. For our guest Charlie Cifarelli, he found his purpose in life through a viral video of a homeless man's companion named Star, who was shot by the New York Police Department. Through Star, Charlie is able to live his second life where he pursues justice and truth as well as valuing compassion, empathy, understanding, and humanity. In this episode, we'll hear about his story and mission to help others, especially through his book 14th & 2nd.From Long Island, life dealt Charlie a difficult hand early on. He was born in a position not to succeed and lived a lifetime of secrecy. He worked hard and found success by rising through the ranks in the Nebraska Department of Correctional Services and then starting his own successful business. Charlie Cifarelli is one of the rare individuals alive today that has seen it all. After being born into hell and taking a step further down in the into the next level, Charlie was able to rise from the depths and sit in purgatory while he found some sort of balance. After a successful career as a corrections officer, then as the owner of a large trash business, Charlie was finally able to find his way into the light through a one eyed four-legged animal name Star. There is a bit of Charlie's story in us all. Whether it's a contentious relationship with our parents, addiction, compassion spirituality, or looking for love in all the wrong places, Charlie touches on so many basic human emotions that it is difficult to not feel connected to him. Charlie Cifarelli found Star, a dog who was shot in the head in new york and maced. Somehow she survived, Charlie spent 8 months or more trying to find Star. Charlie was living in a van in his 20's going through a tough time in his life. All he had was his dog and van. One day the dog was outside and was hit by 2 cars but lived. After an upbringing with a violent father and a period of time of serious addiction to the point of living on train tracks. One day he snapped out of it, became a corrections officer in Nebraska, and then moved back to New York where he is originally from, and opened a waste recycling company that did very well. One day while sitting at his desk he sees the headline a homeless dog with a homeless owner who was having a seizure in the city, out of protection Star lunged at the police protecting her owner, however, the policemen at the moment maybe had little to no choice to decide, however, shot star point-blank in the head and after being shot in the head laying on the ground was maced. The papers said she was dead, Charlie had an instinct she was not. He spent 8 months, red tape and hoops trying to locate her and then adopt her. Well, he completed his mission and found her. He would take her to patients that were sick, kids that were sick, vets and so on they loved it. Star has since passed in February, however, her legacy lives on. Charles has made a kids coloring book, a soon-to-be-released book with a documentary and or series in the works. What a story. Charlie Cifarelli grew up on the streets of New York, where drugs and crime took over his life. It wasn't until he hit rock bottom that he decided to move to Nebraska and become a corrections officer on death row. Even though Charlie moved, the evilness that lurked inside followed him. That all changed when he witnessed a dog named Star being shot in the face by an NYPD officer. Charlie Cifarelli is living proof that the Demons within don't always win.
