התוכן הרמב"ם פותח את הל' תעניות בזה, שהענין דקביעת תענית על מאורע מסויים הוא כדי שלא "יאמרו דבר זה ממנהג העולם אירע לנו וצרה זו נקרה נקרית", ועאכו"כ מאורע של "עשירי בטבת" הנוגע לכללות עם ישראל, "סמך מלך בבל על ירושלים", שזו היתה הסיבה וההתחלה לענין החורבן וכו' – אלא זהו לתועלת בנ"י, לעורר אותם בתשובה ולתקן את ענינים הדרושים. הירידה היא צורך עלי'. ועפי"ז מובן, שכשמגיע יום זה אין ליפול ביאוש ועצבות ח"ו מירידה המבהילה שהתחילה דוקא ביום עשירי דחודש העשירי (ש"העשירי יהי' קודש"), ואדרבה – זה צריך לעורר "מרירות" ותשובה, ותשובה מאהבה, לבטל את סיבת הגלות, ועי"ז מתחזקת תקוות הגאולה באופן של "אראנו נפלאות" – יתרון האור. ובפרט שנמצאים כעת לאחרי תפלת מנחה ובמקום קדוש וכו'. ונוסף על ההתבוננות בסיבת התענית וכו', יש להוסיף ביום זה בתורה, עבודה וגמ"ח בפועל. משיחת עשרה בטבת – יהפך לשמחה – ה'תשמ"א ל"הנחה פרטית" או התרגום ללה"ק של השיחה: https://thedailysicha.com/?date=30-12-2025 Synopsis The Rambam states at the beginning of the Laws of Fasts that the purpose of a fast day is for a person to recognize that the events commemorated by the fast day are not a “chance occurrence” etc.; especially the 10th of Teves, when “the king of Bavel laid siege to Yerushalayim,” marking the beginning of the destruction of the Beis Hamikdash etc. Ultimately, these events are for the benefit of the Jewish people, to arouse them to do teshuvah and correct whatever needs to be corrected etc. – a “descent for the sake of ascent.” Therefore, it is understood that on a day like this, one should not fall into despair or sadness, chas v'shalom, over the frightening downfall that began specifically on the tenth day of the tenth month (whereas the verse states, “the tenth shall be holy”). On the contrary, a person should feel bitterness and be moved to teshuvah motivated by love, to undo the cause of the exile.
