They spoke openly about the joy and challenges of this simple and authentic life they were creating, inspiring so many other families along the way.  I have always been one to challenge the status quo and found their story inspiring.  Here was a family who just decided that all the stuff was taking over their life and was willing to explore something different.  Originally from Wisconsin, this family of 6 (and 2 dogs I might add) hit the road in 2014 in an RV to explore North America and are still going strong 7 years later.  Having grown up in a traditional family life with school and sporting events, they knew they were embarking on a completely different lifestyle and still question if they are doing the right thing but can't imagine going back.  Along the way, this mom  built 2 remote businesses, had incredible adventures and spent many nights around the campfire. She is a Speaker and Educator on RVing, on being an Entrepreneur, and produces content to inspire others to get on the road with their families. I have been a listener, blog reader, email subscriber, and recently a book launch volunteer absorbing all of their content and appreciating their courage and adventurous spirit they bring to this space.  When Ordinary Sherpa launched I secretly had this guest in mind, hoping one day I might get to speak with her.  It is an honor and privilege to have her here today.  Bryanna Royal, welcome to Ordinary Sherpa.   To Connect with Bryanna Royal:   Website: www.crazyfamilyadventure.com Facebook: www.facebook.com/crazyfamilyadventure Instagram: www.instagram.com/crazyfamilyadventure Pinterest: www.pinterest.com/crazyfamilyadve/ You Tube: www.youtube.com/c/crazyfamilyadventure Book: Full Time RVing with Kids: an Insider's Guide to Life on the Road Key Takeaways Why Not? If they aren’t out climbing mountains, hiking to a waterfall or playing at the beach they are most likely at the local donut shop trying to find the best donuts in North America! They write about things to do with kids at the destinations they visit, full time family travel and working from the road at www.crazyfamilyadventure.com. Follow Bryanna on Facebook, Instagram, Youtubeand Twitter. TIPS FOR VISITING THE FLORIDA KEYS WITH KIDS There is more to the Keys than just Key West. The Keys are made up of five destinations; Key West, the Lower Keys, Marathon, Islamorada and Key Largo. If you really want to get the most out of the Keys you should think about maybe doing a road trip, where you can hit all of the Keys rather staying and experiencing only one of them. Be aware that the Keys are not about the beaches. The Keys are surrounded by a coral reef, which messes with the white sand beaches that come to mind when thinking of Florida. This means there are a lot of great snorkeling spots that you can do right off of the beach. Since the Keys are so long, you shouldn’t try to stay in one of the Keys and drive to explore the rest since you will be spending a lot of time in the car. It is also not a great drive at night since the roads are mostly two lane. Hawks Cay Resortis a great resort to stay for families located in Duck Key. You could definitely visit the Keys in a week, but if you can spend ten to fourteen days, that would be the best. If you are able to spend at least ten days for your trip you will really get to explore each of the Keys at a more relaxed pace. You can still have some really great weather if you visit the Keys in the Winter or Fall but be prepared, it could always turn rainy and overcast. Must do activities in the Florida Keys could include: John Pennenkamp Coral Reef State Parkis a great place to visit. They offer glass bottom boat tours, kayaking, and much more. This state park is located up in the northern Keys. If you are going into Marathon, Florida, you should think about checking out the Turtle Hospital where you can see all of the turtles that they are rehabilitating. They also have a surgery area, that if they happen to be conducting a surgery there is a window where you can see and learn what they are doing. There are also locations in the middle Keys area were you can rent a pontoon, or even just go kayaking. When you get to Key West, the best activity you should think about doing is a tour through Fury Adventures. They will take you out on a big boat for six hours and do activities like snorkeling, jet skiing, parasailing and more. This is a great way to get out on the water! If you want to spend some time off of the water the Key West Aquarium is a great spot to do that. This is a small aquarium but has a lot to offer like signing up to feed the shark! If you are really interested in this, make sure to ask the front desk as soon as you get there to see if they are doing it that day and get your kids or yourself on the list. The Shipwreck Treasure Museumis a really cool place to visit. They have a lot of different artifacts from shipwrecks that happened in Key West and their basement is actually below sea level. There is also the Florida Keys Eco - Discovery Centerthat is free to go to and it is a great place to go to learn more about the reefs, area and the ecosystem! If you like to see the sunset you should check out the Sunset Festival on Mallory Square Dock. You can definitely bring your kids but be prepared for loud people and some crowds. If you are interested in exploring a little bit out of the Keys you should think about visiting Dry Tortugaswhich is an island that has an old fort on it. You have to take a ferry to get there and the trip takes about two hours, but it is so beautiful! If you are really feeling adventurous you can actually camp out on the island. You will need to bring all of your supplies with you but it would be a great experience. If you are thinking of camping in the Keys you should check out the State Parks for their campgrounds but for some of these you will need to book at least eleven months in advance. In Key West there is a place called Island Dogs Barand Lagerheads Beach Barare both great places to eat the beach bar you can literally eat your food with your toes in the sand! Then by the seven mile bridge in Marathon there is a place called the Sunset Grillewhich has a pool in the restaurant and you can sit and relax with your food or even a cocktail while your kids enjoy swimming. You will find a lot of supplies you will need while you are there. For example snorkeling gear, if the place does not provide it there is always places you can rent the gear you will need. Since the weather can be unpredictable be sure to pack layers! BEST PLACE TO TAKE FAMILY PHOTO Bryanna suggests that you take your family photo at the southernmost point of Florida, but be sure to go early in the morning or you could be waiting in line for a couple hours to get your picture taken. If that doesn’t matter to you, taking a family photo on any beach with the ocean behind you will be a great photo! FAVORITE TRAVEL GEAR Bryanna loves to wear her Adidas sandalsbecause they are so comfortable and easy to slide on and off. When she is not wearing those she like her plain black flip flops that you can dress up if you want too. This post contains affiliate links. Living in an RV with four children can be an even bigger challenge. Now go from a massive Diesel Pusher Class A rig which (think 18-wheeler) to a micro-mini trailer and a 12-passenger van. That's a big drop in size and space! From 2,700 ft Home to Living in a Small RV Bryanna tells me about their gradual transition from a large house to small RV living. Believe it or not, living in an RV was not their dream over the years. In fact, these high-school sweethearts bought a home with the intent of settling permanently. "We thought the house would be where grandbabies would come and visit us," she says with a laugh. However, life as they knew it began to feel confining. They started thinking about RV living as a way to explore more with their kids. The transition wasn't quick or easy. For example, it took almost a year from when they decided to try RV living to actually selling the house and living in an RV. "At first I thought 'Why wouldn't everyone do this?'" says Bryanna upon reflection. "Then once we started I understood. It's hard." We discuss the process of minimizing your belongings. Living in an RV means living with less space. A lot less space. That's why minimalism plays an important part of the process for RV living. Getting rid of furniture and appliances is one thing, but what about kids' toys? What about photo albums? Bryanna tells us more about their process in the podcast. From Big RV Living to Small RV Living The Royals started out living in an RV around 39 feet (11+ meters) long. When they first set out, they thought bigger would be better. Yet while they still see value in large RV living, they soon realized that they wanted to try something smaller. RV living at this size gives lots of comforts and amenities, she explains. On the other hand, it also comes with certain limitations. For example, big RV living can limit where you can go. Some roads and bridges can't handle the weight of RVs this large. Besides, RV vehicles this size don't do well off of paved roads. Bryanna tells me that if you're planning to stay in one place for months, then large RV living might be a good option. Having said that, she and her husband realized that they wanted more freedom of movement. This required living in an RV much smaller than what they had. Bryanna details each vehicle and their pros and cons in the podcast. They first traded in their massive RV for a somewhat smaller one. Then later they went even smaller to the RV they live in today. And they love it. Now they have the freedom to go offroad more often and see and drive to places that were once off-limits to their vehicle. Small RV Living and Managing Space With each move to a smaller RV, the Royals had to assess what they carried with them. What would stay and what would go? Small RV living means utilizing every bit of space available to you. That goes double when living in an RV with kids. Bryanna talks about decision process on what stays and what goes. This deals with everything from clothes to toys to kitchen utensils. How They Work While Living in an RV Before they left on their "Crazy Family Adventure," Bryanna's husband worked a full-time job. At first, he was able to convince his employer to work remotely. Yet eventually, that became a burden as well, since he still sat in front of a laptop 9-5. Fast forward to today, and he has found new opportunities, while Bryanna has her own online business. We discuss that internet is like in RV living, and how they manage. Running an online business while living in an RV is a challenge, but they have found a way. Listen in to hear more. Have You Thought About Living in an RV? Does RV living appeal to you? ABOUT BRYANNA FROM CRAZY FAMILY ADVENTURE Bryanna, her husband, four kids, and two dogs sold everything, bought an RV and are traveling full-time around the US for the past two years. They write about family travel and what life is like on the road at Crazy Family Adventure. They also post daily on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and Snapchat. So far they have road tripped through the midwest and southeastern United States and also spent five weeks in Yellowstone National Park. RV TRAVEL TIPS If you aren't traveling full-time, just look for the basic necessities in an RV and go as small as you can for ease of travel because you will be spending your time outside and doing things Look to state and national parks if you want more of a camping experience, whereas if they have a pool, it is probably more of a resort feel Be sure to look at the size of the RV sites (60x80 +) to see how much space you will have between you and your neighbors Boondocking / Business Land Management -- no hook ups are available and there isn't anyone nearby Investigate what types of hook ups are available -- with a sewer hook up you can shower, go to the bathroom, etc.; whereas an electric only hook up will be more limiting When it comes to packing, don't overdo it. Bring things that are easy to grill and eat outside. Frozen veggies last longer but fridges/freezers are small so keep that in mind when you are shopping. Other good things to have include outdoor chairs, outdoor games/balls, flashlights and other things to keep kids occupied When planning your trip, be prepared that getting set up and situated can be very tiring and time consuming so plan on spending at least two nights in each location If possible, towing a car makes it easier to see more of the sights without moving the camper/RV If you are traveling during prime season, book your camping spot in advance. National parks may book up a year in advance FAVORITE TRAVEL GEAR Without a lot of space to store clothes, Bryanna's favorite travel outfit consists of black yoga pants from Target, Adidas sandals or Keen sandals for hiking, and a tank top or a t-shirt and a buff/headband. TIP/APP OF THE WEEK Taking firewood across state lines is illegal so plan on purchasing firewood after you arrive. Also, be sure to bring along cash or a check because many campsites do not accept credit cards.
