Send us a message! In Episode 40 Lynn Morstead interviews Kim Meyer, one of our newest cohousing community members about her path to community. An author, university English professor and most recently the founder of a community farm, Lynn invites Kim to describe her journey from writer to farmer, to cohousing and explore how they all overlap. In her most recent book, Accidental Sisters: Refugee Women Struggling Together for a New American Dream, Kim describes her journey with five refugee women in Houston, Texas, as they navigate a program for single mothers overseen by Alia Altikrity, a former refugee from Iraq. Alia's guiding philosophy is that small, direct, meaningful acts of mutual care are the foundation for a flourishing community. Kim says in her introduction, “I don't know how to fix the systemic problem. But I believe that an answer has something to do with each of us making our small spheres more like the sisterhoods of the women with whom I spent the year documented here” . This resonates strongly with cohousing communities everywhere. Listen in to hear more. For more information about CoHousing Houston, please check out our website at www.cohousinghouston.com. Yesterday, we were in rural Virginia interviewing the pioneering regenerative farmer, Joel Salatin. Today, we are on an equally innovative farm in Houston, Texas, in conversation with Kimberley Meyer, author of Accidental Sisters. It's called Shamba Ya Amani (Farm of Peace) and, as Meyer explains in her new book, it's a place where five immigrant women are attempting to build their own American dream. As Meyer notes, American invention comes in all shapes and forms and what these five immigrant women are doing at the urban farm of Shamba Ya Amani is just as innovative as anything one might find in Silicon Valley.Kimberly Meyer is the author of Accidental Sisters: Refugee Women Struggling Together for a New American Dream (University of California Press, 2024) and The Book of Wanderings: A Mother-Daughter Pilgrimage (Little, Brown, 2015). Her work explores displacement, political and spiritual, and the ways that the relationships among women and between mothers and children can become a hopeful act of resistance against human suffering. She is a 2019 MacDowell Fellow and has received grants from the Houston Arts Alliance and writing residencies at the Vermont Studio Center and Bread Loaf Writers' Conference. In addition to her work as a writer, she helped found and helps manage Shamba Ya Amani, the Farm of Peace, alongside a collective of refugee and immigrant women and other local Houstonians.Named as one of the "100 most connected men" by GQ magazine, Andrew Keen is amongst the world's best known broadcasters and commentators. In addition to presenting KEEN ON, he is the host of the long-running How To Fix Democracy show. He is also the author of four prescient books about digital technology: CULT OF THE AMATEUR, DIGITAL VERTIGO, THE INTERNET IS NOT THE ANSWER and HOW TO FIX THE FUTURE. In this episode, we're thrilled to have Bruce Feiler, a distinguished author and speaker, who has spent his career exploring the complexities of human life. Bruce is here to discuss his latest book, "Life Is in the Transitions," and share his thoughts on the evolving concept of the American Dream.Bruce begins by discussing the importance of storytelling in our lives. He emphasizes that our life is not a linear path but a story filled with numerous transitions. These transitions, whether they are voluntary or involuntary, are the moments that truly shape us. Bruce shares personal anecdotes and research findings to illustrate this point.Next, Bruce delves into the concept of the American Dream. He argues that the traditional definition of success, which often involves financial stability and a steady career, is outdated. Instead, Bruce suggests that success should be defined on our own terms, based on our personal values and aspirations.Bruce also talks about the power of community in navigating life's transitions. He highlights the importance of having a 'transition team' - a group of people who can provide support and guidance during challenging times. Finally, Bruce shares his thoughts on resilience. He believes that resilience is not about bouncing back to where you were before a transition, but about growing and evolving through the experience.Tune in to this enlightening conversation with Bruce Feiler and redefine your concept of success. All around the world foreigners visiting other countries are being seen more and more as rude, obnoxious, and utterly shameful, particular because much of this behavior is influenced by attempts to get likes on social media - this is true from Russia to North America. Ironically, such behavior, mixed with financial burdens, is encouraging many Americans to live abroad due to experiencing too much of that right at home - something that is called ‘The New American Dream'. TikTok is also having a divesting effect on American culture for other reasons too, with millennials attacking old ladies for talking to their children, and others using it to culturally assault men as toxic. One new trend invented a term called ‘boyfriend air' to describe why men make a woman's makeup and hair less shiny after they spend time with them - not because of sex either. It's simply their masculine presence. The incessant need to be a victim is a sign of a narcissistic, psychotic, and Machiavellian cultural new normal. But even if you want to leave the country, it is now necessary to compete with Southwest airline's new overweight policy for ‘customers of size'. Obese customers can not only book more than one seat, but will have the second or even the third(!) paid for by the airline! This has overweight passengers rejecting it as insulting and skinny passengers claiming to be obese to take advantage of the free extra space. Perhaps Santa will also be flying SW this year as he delivers more stuff we don't need and are already ungrateful for. This show is part of the Spreaker Prime Network, if you are interested in advertising on this podcast, contact us at https://www.spreaker.com/show/5328407/advertisement

Listen as my guest Russell Foster explains. He is professor of circadian neuroscience and director of the Sleep and Circadian Neuroscience Institute at the University of Oxford and author of the book, Life Time: Your Body Clock and Its Essential Roles in Good Health and Sleep (https://amzn.to/3eEptzj). When you hear about venture capital and entrepreneurship, a lot of times those conversations revolve around Silicon Valley or New York or Boston. After all, that is where a lot of the money is. But there is a movement to get more investment dollars into the hands of entrepreneurs all over the country – not just in Silicon Valley. Leading this movement is Steve Case. He is probably best known as the founder of America Online (AOL) and is now an investor seeking to bring more investment dollars to businesses all over the U.S. Steve is author of the book Rise of the Rest: How Entrepreneurs in Surprising Places are Building the New American Dream (https://amzn.to/3EFg6Kk) and he joins me with tales of interesting business success stories you would likely never hear about anywhere else. When there is bad news, who is most likely to take it harder – men or women? Listen as I reveal the answer and why it appears to be so. http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2012/10/121010172113.htm PLEASE SUPPORT OUR SPONSORS! We really like The Jordan Harbinger Show!
