January 18, 2001. Miami, Florida. Geralyn Graham, the foster mother of four-year old Rilya Wilson, claims that a female caseworker from the Florida Department of Children and Families took Rilya from her residence for a medical evaluation, but never returned. Rilya is not officially reported missing until 15 months later, but the authorities become convinced that Geralyn fabricated her story and is personally responsible for Rilya's disappearance. Geralyn is eventually charged with numerous crimes and receives a lengthy prison sentence after she is convicted of kidnapping and child abuse at her trial. Since the jury is unable to convict Geralyn of murder and Rilya's remains are never found, there are a lot of unanswered questions about what actually happened. On this week's episode of “The Trail Went Cold”, we explore a heartbreaking and controversial missing children's case which came about as the result of a major scandal within Florida's foster care system. Special thanks to listener Jaclyn Collins for narrating the opening of this episode. Here’s a structured summary of the interview between Dr. Melanye Maclin and Rushion McDonald: Purpose of the Interview The discussion aimed to educate the audience about the health risks associated with hair care chemicals—including relaxers, dyes, and synthetic hair—and to advocate for safer practices. It also highlighted Dr. Maclin’s pioneering work in hair and skin supplements and her ongoing mission to raise awareness about these issues. Key Takeaways FDA Ban on Hair Chemicals In 2023, the FDA considered banning certain chemicals in hair products due to health risks, but no ban has been implemented yet. These chemicals are linked to breast cancer, uterine cancer, ovarian cancer, and hormone disruption. High-Risk Chemicals Identified Hair Relaxers: Sodium, calcium, guanine, and lithium hydroxide. Hair Dyes: Para-phenylenediamine (especially in permanent dyes). Synthetic Hair: Contains benzene, posing risks of lung cancer and leukemia. Impact on African-American Women African-American women face a 45% higher risk of certain cancers due to combined use of relaxers and dyes. Cultural and aesthetic pressures contribute to continued use despite health risks. Children at Risk Applying relaxers to young girls can cause early puberty, uterine fibroids, infertility, and increased cancer risk. Chemicals penetrate the scalp, enter the bloodstream, and disrupt hormones. Industry Resistance Pushback from salons and manufacturers due to financial interests. Comparison to tobacco and alcohol industries—profit prioritized over health. Solutions & Advice Avoid chemical treatments when possible. If used, protect the entire scalp with petroleum jelly to reduce absorption. Space out relaxer applications (every 8–10 weeks, max 10 minutes for children). Dr. Maclin’s Contributions Launched Bella Nutri supplements (2004 for women, 2008 for men). Advocates internal nutrition for hair and skin health. Website: drmacklin.com and bellabeauproducts.com. Notable Quotes On FDA inaction:“Still to this day, that ban has not occurred… We’re continuously having women going to the next generation of life as a result—next generation cancers.” On cultural pressures:“We’re so into wanting to have a certain look versus wanting to be healthy.” On children’s exposure:“We’ve got to keep chemicals off of little girls’ hair… It’s causing hormone disruption, early puberty, infertility, and increased cancer risk.” On industry resistance:“People care about the green-eyed devil called money… Look at the tobacco industry.” On her mission:“I feel like I’m caring more about someone’s health than they’re caring about their own.” #SHMS #STRAW #BESTSupport the show: https://www.steveharveyfm.com/See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Children as young as 12 can legally work on California's farms, picking strawberries and pruning blueberry bushes along with a host of other physically demanding jobs. They described unsafe and unsanitary conditions, extreme heat — and a fear of speaking up, because they can't afford to lose their jobs. Lopez reports that in California, “enforcement of child labor laws has been inconsistent, the number of workplace safety inspections and citations issued to employers have dropped and repeat offenders were not fined for hundreds of violations of pesticide safety laws.” He joins us to share his reporting, and how the state is responding to it. Water is essential to a child's health, making up the majority of their body weight. But when illness or heat disrupts that balance, dehydration can set in quickly and dangerously. Despite being one of the most common pediatric issues, the simplest and most effective solution often goes unnoticed: oral rehydration. In this episode, we'll shine a light on this powerful yet underused therapy. From recognizing early warning signs to selecting the best approach, we'll explore the science and practical tools behind keeping children safely hydrated. Joining us virtually from Iowa is Aamer Imdad, MD. He is a gastroenterologist at Stead Family Children's Hospital, as well as an assistant professor of pediatrics at the University of Iowa. Pediatrician Dr. Caity Gilman joins me this week to unpack breath-holding spells, those frightening moments when a child turns blue or pale, goes limp, or briefly loses consciousness during intense emotion or dysregulation or pain.   Together we explore:   - The two types of breath-holding spells and what triggers each of them. - Are certain children more prone to these episodes based on genetics, temperament, or other factors? - What should parents do in the moment to keep their child safe, and how to know when it's time to call their pediatrician. - What parents can do after a spell to comfort their child. - Do these spells cause any long-term harm, or are they truly benign? - How to support your child's emotion regulation and frustration tolerance between episodes.   If you're currently navigating breath-holding spells, or you simply want to feel more prepared for the unexpected moments that come with raising little ones, this episode offers clarity, reassurance, and practical guidance from both a pediatrician and a fellow parent who has lived this experience firsthand.     LEARN MORE ABOUT MY GUEST:

On this episode I chatted with Chip Keating. Chip is a former Oklahoma Highway Patrol trooper, Secretary of Public Safety, and independent businessman. He is running for Governor to take on the threats facing Oklahoma families, crack down on crime, grow Oklahoma's economy, and work with President Trump to make Oklahoma a leader in the America First agenda. As a State Trooper, Chip spent years protecting Oklahomans from drugs and violent crime. Later, as Oklahoma's Secretary of Public Safety, he strengthened law enforcement, improved training, and kept order in times of crisis. In the private sector, Chip spent two decades in the oil and gas industry, fighting job-killing regulations and helping grow opportunity across the state. Beyond business, he has led in service to his community — chairing the Salvation Army Central Oklahoma Area Command, serving on the boards of OU Health and the University Hospitals Authority Trust, and as president of the Children's Hospital Foundation. He is also the founder and president of the Oklahoma State Troopers Foundation. Chip and his wife, Brittney, have been married for 20 years and are raising their three children in Oklahoma. A third-generation Oklahoman and the son of former Governor Frank Keating and First lady Cathy Keating, Chip is proud of his family's legacy of service — and he is ready to continue that tradition by fighting for a safer, stronger, and more prosperous Oklahoma. Fun Fact, Chip is the first guest where I have interviewed both his parents. Have you ever wondered how to talk to children about autism in a way that feels natural, positive, and empowering? In this replay episode, I'm bringing back my incredibly insightful conversation with Andi Putt (Mrs. Speechie P) — an Autistic SLP who specializes in autism evaluations and neuro-affirming support. Andi shares compassionate, practical ways to talk to autistic children about their identity, how to approach conversations with peers and siblings, and why starting these discussions early can make a profound impact on a child's confidence, self-understanding, and mental health. We also dive into how to use everyday moments to normalize autism, reduce stigma, and help all children grow in empathy and acceptance. This is one of those episodes that educators and families continuously return to… and for good reason. Takeaways  Why conversations about autism should start early — and continue over time How explaining autism positively can support a child's self-concept and emotional well-being Simple, child-friendly ways to describe autism using strengths-based language Strategies for helping peers understand behaviors through empathy (including Andi's amazing "bear in the classroom" analogy) How open discussions reduce stigma, prevent bullying, and foster more inclusive classrooms Why kids are often more accepting and adaptable than adults assume How to avoid common mistakes adults make when talking about autism — and what to say instead The power of validating children's needs, identities, and differences without shame The importance of individualized support and asking children what they prefer or need How to talk about stimming, sensory overload, fight-or-flight responses, and regulation in ways young kids can understand Tips for sharing information with classmates (and when parent/child permission is needed)  Bio: Andi Putt, also known as Mrs. Speechie P, is an Autistic Speech Language Pathologist specializing in team-based Autism evaluations and neuro-affirming support. She is dedicated to empowering families and helping Autistic children understand and embrace their authentic selves while also advocating for each individual's unique needs. When she's not advocating for others, you can find her indulging in a good book, planning her next travel adventure, procrastinating literally anything, or enjoying time with her family. Courtenay Turner & Dr. Lee Merritt Decode the Anomalies No One Wants You to Notice Last night's no-guest livestream of Dangerous Dames was pure, unfiltered speculation — the kind of show where the Dames just sit down with a stack of weird headlines and start connecting dots until the picture gets very uncomfortable. Here's what we unpacked (and why none of it feels like coincidence): Bear Attacks Are Suddenly Everywhere Japan just recorded its deadliest year ever for bear fatalities. North America is seeing grizzlies and black bears wandering into cities and attacking in places they never used to. Official explanation? “Climate change made them hungry.” Dr. Merritt: “Bears don't read climate reports. Something is driving them out of their normal patterns — and it's happening at the same time we're seeing…” Puncture Wounds That Don't Match Any Known Animal Otter bites, “human” bites, and bizarre puncture patterns showing up in ERs across the U.S. — including the same photo of the same two men used in stories from Omaha and Pennsylvania. The Dames pointed to the Idaho student murders (unexplained puncture wounds on the bodies) and the growing number of “chewed-up” corpses found in Houston reservoirs. Theory on the table: something predatory, non-human, and very old is being disturbed — or released. Sinkholes Swallowing Cities Overnight Seoul, Florida, the UK — massive, perfectly round sinkholes opening with no warning. Some so deep rescue teams can't reach the bottom. The official line is “erratic weather.” The Dames aren't buying it. When sinkholes start appearing near particle accelerators and 5G/6G test zones, it's time to ask what's vibrating under our feet. Fires That Burn the Wrong Things Houses torched to ash while trees ten feet away are untouched. Blue roofs spared. Metal rims melted, plastic toys intact. Same pattern we saw in Lahaina and Paradise. Directed-energy weapons? Frequency resonance? Whatever it is, it's selective — and it's spreading. Predictive Programming in Children's Books Courtney shared her childhood favorite, Wacky Wednesday (1974), where everything is upside down and backwards — and everyone insists it's normal. Sound familiar? Then we went down the rabbit hole of A Wrinkle in Time, The Forgotten Door, and the tesseract symbolism showing up everywhere from CERN to children's literature. Message: They've been telling us for decades that reality is about to flip. The Darwin Fraud That Won't Die Dr. Merritt dropped a bombshell: Darwin's famous “Tree of Life” notebook — the only one that mattered — went missing for 20 years and came back with drawings that match modern genetics… which didn't exist in 1835. The entire theory of evolution may be the longest-running scientific psyop in history. The Real War Is Metaphysical From subterranean creatures to time-distortion anomalies to the push for transhuman “upgrades,” the Dames concluded: “They want you terrified of nature, addicted to pharma, and begging for AI to save you — because the moment you remember you're made in God's image, their game is over.” The full episode is too hot for YouTube (of course). Some family stories had a lifelong impact. One great-grandmother was the local healer in her small rural community. When the Spanish Flu erupted, she used an elixir of elderberries and alcohol to treat 20 community members who fell ill with that dread disease. Not a single patient died. Lynn reports that no one in her extended family fell ill from that disease, and attributes their resistance to the nightly dose of elderberry elixir for all family members, which was a family ritual. Dr. Lafferty is an endowed professor at Nova Southeastern University, teaching pharmacy and medical students. She attributes her career choice to influences from her grandmothers, who inspired her direction in life. The life lessons she learned also drove her to seek rational solutions to the SARS-CoV-2 virus when it broke out, causing COVID in 2020. Challenges in Medical Education Dr Lafferty highlighted her concerns about the lack of education on essential nutrients and the influence of hospital protocols over resident physicians. She described a concerning mindset among psychiatry residents who expressed fear of harming patients with prescribed drugs, despite their extensive training and financial investment. Dr. Lafferty also recounted a personal experience involving her brother's inadequate medical care, emphasizing the limitations imposed by hospital protocols and the lack of knowledge about basic treatments like magnesium deficiency. Truth and Love's Transformative Power The Breggins discussed with Dr. Lafferty her experience speaking truthfully about healthcare issues, including her confrontation with a dean over her statements about Lipitor's side effects. She expressed her commitment to speaking the truth and her belief that she is on a mission. Dr. Breggin and Ginger Breggin also confirmed their personal sense of being called to do their work. Authoritarian Control in Medical Progress Peter and Lynn discussed the impact of authoritarian control over medical institutions, highlighting how innovative doctors are being suppressed, which hampers progress in medicine and patient care. Pharmacists vs. Physicians: Education Gaps Dr. Breggin and Dr. Lafferty also examined differences between primary care doctors and pharmacists, Dr. Lafferty declaring that pharmacists are more science-based and less authoritarian than medical doctors. They highlighted how medical students receive limited pharmacology training compared to the comprehensive education received in the past. Therapy, Medication, and Scientific Reasoning Dr. Breggin raised the issue of the importance of therapy over medication for psychiatric and psychological issues and the potential benefits of pharmacists working with psychiatrists to monitor psychiatric drug side effects. Listening to the patient who is sitting in front of you and looking beyond the latest big pharmaceutical options were two important highlights that came out of the conversation. Seeking treatments with the least potential for harm and understanding the range of treatments available in the natural world of foods and supplements were also emphasized. Dr. Lafferty can be found at her website. She offers courses, some free. Her newest training is a 10-session course, held once a week, that gives a basic understanding of how to take care of yourself and your family best. Guest Leah Ellis is a mom of four, writer, wedding officiant, Girl Scout leader, and founder of The Society of Child Entrepreneurs. Her life blends family, creativity, and leadership, from giggling over business plans at the breakfast table to mentoring kids through hands-on entrepreneurship. With her children as her compass, Leah is reminded daily that growth is messy, love is work, and compassion changes everything. Through SoCE, Nerdy Nuptials ICT, and Girl Scouts, she creates spaces where kids, couples, and communities are empowered to lead with authenticity. Leah believes in making room for both the mess and the magic of becoming. Melody Ellis is a young artist, child entrepreneur, and community leader who blends creativity, curiosity, and confidence in everything she does. As one of the first members of The Society of Child Entrepreneurs, Melody has grown up alongside SoCE, learning how to turn ideas into action through real-world business experiences. From designing artwork and products to helping at events, she leads with imagination and heart. Guided by creativity and compassion, Melody is learning that growth takes courage, mistakes are part of the journey, and kids are capable of amazing things right now. Through SoCE, Girl Scouts, and her own creative ventures, Melody is already making her mark as a leader in the making.     Summary This episode explores how Leah Ellis and her daughter, Melody, turned a four-year-old's curiosity into a thriving business and, ultimately, a youth entrepreneurship movement. When the pandemic forced Leah to close her daycare, she pivoted into financial coaching—training that Melody absorbed from the living-room TV. Soon, Melody announced she wanted to start a business, launching a contact-free drip-art venture at age four. As her work grew, Leah recognized the need for a community of young entrepreneurs. She created the Society of Child Entrepreneurs, a structured program teaching business skills, financial literacy, adaptability, and leadership through hands-on experience. Kids learn pricing, budgeting, opportunity cost, and problem-solving, culminating in selling their products publicly. The conversation highlights extraordinary creativity—like kids designing a robot to stop porch pirates—and the confidence that grows when adults step back and ask questions rather than set limits. Leah also discusses the proposed "SoCE Law" to ease restrictions on kids starting businesses. Throughout, Melody reflects on how entrepreneurship has made her more adaptable, expressive, and willing to share her work. Together, they illustrate what happens when young people are empowered to build real businesses. The Essential Point The core message is that children are far more capable than adults often assume. Creativity, business sense, and problem-solving emerge naturally when they are given space, the ability to ask questions, and trust. Leah rejects the idea that "kids are the future," arguing instead that they are powerful now. By letting kids start real businesses, handle real challenges, and make real decisions, the Society of Child Entrepreneurs helps them develop confidence, adaptability, and an entrepreneurial mindset that carries into every part of their lives.
