Simon Edvinsson is out through the Olympic break — and the Red Wings just got a real test. Detroit followed up an 8-1-1 stretch with a tight, frustrating 3–1 loss to the Los Angeles Kings, a team built to choke off offense and win on the margins. The result wasn't panic-worthy — but it was revealing. We break down what Edvinsson's injury actually changes, why the Kings were able to make Detroit look sloppy without dominating play, and how two defensive lapses ultimately decided the game. We also dig into why breaking up the Albert Johansson–Jacob Bernard-Docker pairing mattered, and what that tells us about blue-line certainty heading toward the trade deadline. Using insight from Max Bultman, plus postgame comments from Todd McLellan, we separate urgency from execution and ask the bigger question: Does this stretch clarify what Steve Yzerman needs to add — or confirm patience is still the right play? We also cover: Why LA's defensive structure flatlined Detroit's offense Power-play struggles and five-on-five creation concerns John Gibson's continued grip on the starting net What the Kings, Capitals, and Avalanche games reveal about playoff readiness This wasn't a bad loss. It was a measuring-stick game — and the deadline picture just came into focus. JOIN THE DISCORD: https://discord.gg/rd2RUDkzuS Let's have fun! Sponsored by Draft Kings! Some of us are hurting so much that living each day is a struggle. Others wake up every morning to the anguish of having lost a loved one to suicide. In either case, the question of what happens after death to those who have taken their lives is a deeply personal and painful question. This week on Ask Away, Jo and Vince discuss the hope of the Christian faith for those who are carrying these heavy burdens. They also encourage those of you who are feeling overwhelmed that you don't have to go through this on your own—professional help is available and can really make a difference, as can the support of your community and your local church. If you're in the US and you need immediate help, you can call or text 988 to reach the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline ( 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline ). The Red Wings are winning, developing internally, and staring straight at a trade market that's getting more expensive by the day. We start with a quick results check, including Detroit's win over San Jose, the OT win against Ottawa, and tonight's game vs. Toronto (updated after puck drop). Marco Kasper's breakout performance against the Sharks is a key part of that conversation, raising an important question as the deadline approaches: how much help does Detroit truly need from outside versus growth from within? From there, we pivot to the trade market. With Rasmus Andersson off the board and the Feb. 4 Olympic roster freeze looming, early trades are carrying a premium. Using The Score's updated trade board as context, we break down why January has quietly become the new deadline — and why Detroit can't afford to chase urgency. What we're breaking down in this episode: Why Detroit can't overpay Early buyers are paying more to beat the freeze. The Wings need discipline, not panic, especially with their recent form and internal momentum. The Olympic freeze effect How roster certainty, leverage, and timing are inflating prices — and why patience may actually be Detroit's advantage. Defense options after Andersson Who realistically fits the Wings' blue-line needs without mortgaging the future: Dougie Hamilton Justin Faulk Forward upgrades worth discussing Skill, grit, and lineup impact — not just name recognition: Vincent Trocheck Elias Pettersson Jordan Kyrou Robert Thomas We separate realistic fits from fantasy trades, discuss contract structure and playoff impact, and explain why not every “available” star actually makes sense for Detroit's window. The bottom line: The Red Wings are in a position of leverage. They don't need to win January — they need to make the right move. This episode is about how Detroit can upgrade its defense, add grit scoring if needed, and still avoid paying the Olympic tax. JOIN THE DISCORD: https://discord.gg/rd2RUDkzuS Let's have fun! The Detroit Red Wings remain firmly in the Atlantic Division race — and this week proved why. Detroit delivered two massive statement wins, blanking the red-hot Montreal Canadiens 4–0 on the road and gutting out an overtime victory against the Carolina Hurricanes, another Eastern Conference heavyweight. Those weren't flukes — they were games where the Wings showed structure, composure, and the ability to shut teams down. Detroit's 3–0 loss to the Boston Bruins looks ugly on the surface, but context matters. This was the second night of a back-to-back after an emotional overtime win against the Carolina Hurricanes, followed by travel from Detroit to Boston. The third period turned into a possession nightmare, and it was clear the legs were gone. Not a great performance — but not a true reflection of who this team has been all season. Sometimes fatigue wins, and this felt like one of those nights. We also dig into trade chatter after Elliotte Friedman reported on 32 Thoughts that Detroit is among the frontrunners for Rasmus Andersson. His raw numbers don't jump off the page, but when you factor in his workload as Calgary's No. 1 defenseman, the fit in Detroit — behind Moritz Seider and Simon Edvinsson — gets very interesting. Nex, we discuss the unexpected name surfacing around the league: Dougie Hamilton. After being scratched in New Jersey and trade noise picking up, does his offensive upside outweigh the $9M cap hit and term? And would Detroit even want to commit long-term? Looking ahead, Detroit gets a chance to reset with games against the San Jose Sharks and the Ottawa Senators. After handling Ottawa on the road just a week ago, the question now is simple: do the Senators come in desperate for revenge, or does Detroit continue to assert itself as the more complete team? These are the kinds of games that matter in the standings — opportunities to bank points, control pace, and prove that the Wings belong in the top tier of the Atlantic. Big wins, smart context, and real trade talk — let's rant. JOIN THE DISCORD: https://discord.gg/rd2RUDkzuS Let's have fun! Sponsored by Draft Kings! Do you have people in your life who have heard about your faith and have engaged with you on spiritual topics, yet you are longing for them to actually respond to the Gospel? But when is the right time tp extend an invitation to them to follow Christ? Are they ready? What if they aren't? Should the invitation be the culmination of a process of sharing the faith or the very starting point for it? And shouldn't an invitation be experienced as an honor and a gift, even if someone feels they need to RSVP “no”? Vince considers these and other related questions on this week's Ask Away, as he invites each of us to make it a New Year's resolution to be more invitational with the Gospel in 2026! ------ We're so glad you joined us for Ask Away. The Red Wings are still winning — but the path hasn't been clean. In this extended episode of Red Wings Rant, we break down a critical stretch that includes back-to-back losses to Pittsburgh, a controversial but important win over Ottawa, and what those games reveal about where Detroit actually stands. The Wings were thoroughly out-chanced against the Penguins at five-on-five, posting just a 38.4% expected-goals share. Against Ottawa, they flipped the script on the scoreboard — despite MoneyPuck giving them only a 27% chance to win — by capitalizing on mistakes, special teams, and timely goaltending. That contrast leads to the real question: not “is it sustainable?” — but how good teams find ways to survive when they don't have their best game. We dig into: Why Detroit's underlying numbers vs. Pittsburgh are more concerning than the final scores • Todd McLellan's blunt assessment of what went wrong — and what must improve • Why Ottawa was the perfect “response test” opponent • What winning ugly actually tells us about structure, goaltending, and maturity • Growing concerns around the top line of Larkin, Raymond, and Emmitt Finnie • Whether Finnie's stamina is catching up and if it's time for a new look • Marco Kasper's role — and whether a reset in Grand Rapids makes sense • Andrew Copp's December surge as Detroit's unsung stabilizer • How Moritz Seider's all-around impact continues to anchor this team • Trade deadline pressure and why Detroit should be part of impact conversations • Two potential fits if the Wings choose to be aggressive: Alex Tuch and Justin Faulk • Why Heated Rivalry matters for hockey culture — and why this conversation belongs in the sport right now Red Wings Rant: Where tirades and impassioned pleas about your Detroit Red Wings finally have a home. The Red Wings are rolling — and Moritz Seider is driving the bus. In this short pre-game episode before puck drop against the Stars, we break down Detroit's back-to-back wins over the Washington Capitals, capped by Seider's overtime game-winner and another dominant weekend from Alex DeBrincat and Lucas Raymond. The Wings are now first in the Atlantic by points and points percentage, tied for third-most regulation wins in the Eastern Conference, and — most importantly — winning games the right way, not by sneaking into overtime. What's fueling the surge? December has been Detroit's “regression to the mean” month — in the best possible way. 5-on-5 (Dec 1–23): 10.44% shooting percentage 92.47% save percentage 1.029 PDO (top-tier puck luck and performance) All strengths (Dec 1–23): 12.62% shooting percentage 91.29% save percentage 1.039 PDO Detroit still ranks bottom-10 in high-danger shooting percentage, but here's the key shift: 4th-best high-danger save percentage in the NHL Best medium-danger shooting percentage in the league In other words: the Wings are finishing from dangerous mid-ice areas, protecting the slot better, and finally getting goaltending results that match their structure. We also dig into: Why the Washington wins matter against one of the NHL's elite defensive teams Moritz Seider leading the entire NHL in Goals Above Replacement (GAR) What GAR actually measures Why it belongs in the Norris and Hart Trophy conversation Andrew Copp's resurgence since returning from core surgery and stabilizing the second line DeBrincat and Raymond producing at a true point-per-game pace A quick look at John Leonard's hot start, what's real, and what will cool off This episode is a snapshot of a Red Wings team playing structured hockey, stacking regulation wins, and getting elite value from its best player — right before the Stars come to town. The Red Wings are back in first place in the Atlantic — but the path there hasn't been clean. This week on Red Wings Rant, we break down a wildly successful West Coast road trip, including shutout wins in Vancouver and Chicago, a statement victory over the Islanders, and why the Utah Mammoth loss looks more like a fatigue-driven anomaly than a warning sign. December has quietly become Detroit's regression-to-the-mean month, with top-tier PDO, shooting percentage, and goaltending metrics finally catching up to the underlying play. But the biggest conversation looms larger than any single game. Did the Red Wings miss a once-in-a-decade opportunity by not landing Quinn Hughes? Using reporting from Max Bultman, Sean Shapiro, Elliotte Friedman, and Pierre LeBrun, we dive into what the Hughes non-trade says about Steve Yzerman's risk tolerance, the value of elite stars versus prospect depth, and whether Detroit is doing enough to capitalize on Dylan Larkin's prime years. This is the most honest Red Wings conversation yet — the good, the bad, and the uncomfortable middle. These days, any measure of peace feels hard to come by. Whether we're at war with one another or at war with ourselves, we are always conflicted over one thing or another. Under such conditions, the angelic announcement of “peace on earth” seems hopelessly naive. But what if peace were more than an empty promise or a futile proposition? This Christmas, the Ask Away podcast considers the implications of this question: What if peace came to us as an actual person? ------ We're so glad you joined us for Ask Away. The Quinn Hughes smoke is turning into real fire. In this episode of Red Wings Rant, we break down Elliotte Friedman's latest reporting that Detroit and Vancouver have talked — and that if the Canucks decide to move Hughes, the Red Wings are one of the few teams with the assets to get him. We also walk through Harman Dayal's fascinating new piece in The Athletic, detailing why Detroit is uniquely positioned to extend Hughes long-term thanks to CBA timing, Michigan ties, and a massive financial advantage over all other suitors — especially New Jersey. Then we pivot to Moritz Seider, who isn't just climbing the Norris rankings… According to Prashanth Iyer, Seider belongs in the early Hart Trophy conversation. We break down his elite impacts, wild GAR numbers, Detroit's disastrous play without him, and why he may be the most valuable defenseman to his team in the league. Plus: What last night's win over Vancouver really means? How should we fare the rest of the West Coast Trip? How does Detroit stack up in the standings heading into its next stretch? What is different about December vs November and October? And yes… We'll talk about the dream scenario: A Seider–Hughes, Norris-caliber top pair in Detroit. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

The Detroit Red Wings lost 4–3 to the New Jersey Devils, but unlike so many of their blowout losses this season, this one showed real fight. Detroit heavily out-chanced the Devils at 5-on-5, dominated long stretches of play, and nearly tied the game with a frantic two-minute barrage in the final moments. This was one of those rare “good” losses — not something we celebrate often on Red Wings Rant — but the effort in periods two and three showed what this team can be when they lock in. Still, the problems are real. Early defensive mistakes continue to sink the Wings, with breakdowns in coverage, failed clears, and brutal giveaways repeatedly ending up in the back of the net. With Simon Edvinsson out, Detroit is forced to lean more heavily on a third pair that simply cannot keep up. And the analytics tell an even clearer story: the Wings have the 5th worst High-Danger Goals For%, league-worst Medium-Danger Goals For%, 3rd worst shooting percentage, 5th worst save percentage, and 2nd worst PDO at 5-on-5. Even at all strengths, Detroit is top-5 in expected goals but bottom-10 in both shooting and save percentage. A good team keeps beating itself. We also break down strong performances from Larkin, Raymond, Finnie, and Seider, the physical pushback the Wings showed late in the game, the awful non-call on Jonas Siegenthaler's hit to Lucas Raymond's head, and why this loss — strangely — gives us more confidence in Detroit's long-term trajectory. Plus: Emmitt Finnie makes honorable mention in The Athletic's Calder Trophy race. Red Wings Rant: Where tirades and impassioned pleas about your Detroit Red Wings finally have a home. Does the Bible endorse chattel slavery? How could a loving and just God command the killing of civilian populations? Does the Bible teach that women's bodies are inferior? Did God tempt Job? The Red Wings reached the 20-game mark in first place in the Atlantic Division. But does the record match the reality? This week on Red Wings Rant, we break down: The Wings' best shutdown third period of the season • Todd McLellan's message on game management — and why it matters • How Detroit blew a 4–1 lead, then responded with back-to-back wins • Why the stars (Larkin, DeBrincat, Raymond, Seider) are carrying this team • The rookies bounce back: Danielson, Finnie, ASP • Cam Talbot taking the starting job by force • John Gibson's struggles and what it means for the season • Whether Detroit's early success is sustainable Plus: how the Wings compare across the NHL at the 20-game benchmark — and what comes next. Red Wings Rant — Episode Narrative (Nov 19) “20 Games In: First Place… and Still Flawed?” The Detroit Red Wings reached the 20-game mark in first place in the Atlantic Division — a sentence that would've sounded insane seven days ago, when this team was stuck in the mud, blowing leads, and wrestling with its identity. And the wildest part? Both versions of the Red Wings — the playoff version, and the meltdown version — showed up this week. Last Week: A Test of Consistency We said: If the Wings could take advantage of a soft stretch — Ducks, Sabres, Rangers, Kraken — they could claw back into a strong position. One week later? They did exactly that. They handled Anaheim, threw away a 4–1 lead vs Buffalo but still got a point, gutted out a win at MSG, and closed out the Kraken with a mature, structured third period — something they haven't done most of the season. That's growth. That's progress. But the path to get here still tells us a lot about the team. Game Management: The New Buzzword That Actually Matters Todd McLellan has hammered this theme all year: “Until this group figures out what's important at certain times, we're going to have those nights.” Against Buffalo? Total collapse. Against New York and Seattle? Finally, the shutdown hockey he's been begging for. The Seattle third period wasn't flashy — five shots allowed, perfect breakouts, clean faceoffs, pucks deep, smart changes. It was the most professional 20 minutes this team has played this season. This is what real playoff teams do. But the challenge now is: Can it be repeated? Stars Are Driving the Bus Larkin, DeBrincat, and Raymond are all pacing career-level seasons: Larkin: 600 points + scoring at a star level Cat: Tenacious, complete, and reliable no matter the line Raymond: Finally looking healthy — nine points in his last four And Moritz Seider is quietly playing elite two-way hockey despite a few headline-grabbing mistakes. The Rookies: High Impact, High Volatility The 2023 class stole the show early, then went quiet… …and came roaring back against Seattle: Danielson's first NHL goal Nearly another (called back) Finnie's power-play goal after Danielson set him up ASP steadying after a rough stretch These three have brought energy AND mistakes — but the energy has clearly returned to the lineup. Goaltending: The Split Is Clear Cam Talbot: +1 GSAX, making the saves Detroit needs Steady, calm, veteran presence John Gibson: 11th-worst GSAX, sub-.875 save percentage High-danger rebounds, bad-angle goals, and collapsing confidence around him Detroit's Jekyll-and-Hyde identity? It's not just game management. It's also which goalie is in the net. 20-Game Snapshot: The Good and The Questions What's working: Stars producing PK massively improved Rookies making real contributions Defensive improvements in structure Third-period closure vs Seattle In playoff position despite flaws 1st place in the division at the quarter-mark What still needs answers: Will this team ever find consistent scoring from the middle six? Can Gibson turn it around? Can they avoid the rookie wall? Will they protect leads consistently? Can they replicate the Seattle third period against real contenders? This is a good team. It might even be a playoff team. But the story for the next 62 games is simple: Are the Red Wings learning how to win? Or surviving despite themselves? Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. This week, Dr. Greg sits down with Adrian and Shaelyn Misiak to talk about the real-life tension of growing and healing while your family stays the same. Together they unpack how true boundaries flow from inner peace—not control—and how to stay grounded in mercy when old patterns resurface around the holidays. Key Topics: Why trying to control your family's behavior only increases anxiety—and what to do instead. Why "outgrowing your family" doesn't mean you've done anything wrong—and what it actually reveals about your healing. How to stay peaceful when one holiday comment sends you straight back into your old role. The surprising truth: boundaries aren't the solution… they're the result of inner peace. How to remain connected to your family without betraying the growth God is doing in you. How mercy—not distance—creates the safest emotional space when old wounds resurface. What to expect when you're the "different one" in the family…and how to carry that role with peace. The Red Wings are one of the strangest teams in the NHL right now. By straight win percentage, Detroit ranks like a top-10 team. But watch the games — or just check the box scores — and you see a team that either plays fast, structured, playoff-caliber hockey … or completely falls apart for long stretches. In this episode, we break down why the Wings keep swinging between dominant and disastrous, including: Why their win percentage paints a WAY better picture than their actual record The standings favor loser points — we don't. When you sort the NHL by actual wins per game, Detroit sits in the top third of the league. The goaltending problem that's draining winnable games John Gibson allows 4 goals on 1.86 expected against Chicago. Talbot and Gibson rank bottom-10 in Goals Saved Above Expected. Detroit has the 6th-worst team save percentage. This team isn't getting average goaltending — and it's costing them points. Why the Red Wings get tons of possession but no scoring Detroit is top-10 in: Corsi For % Fenwick For % But near the bottom in: High-danger chances created High-danger shooting percentage They generate quantity, not quality — a huge problem for a team missing finishers outside of Larkin and DeBrincat. What's wrong with the top six? Emmitt Finnie may be skating hard, but is there enough skill next to Larkin and Kane? Raymond is still recovering. Kasper looks like a passenger, not a driver. Patrick Kane is back, but still not at full speed — and the power play looks lost without his timing. Why this might be mental, not just talent Todd McLellan has already said it: Detroit still struggles with game management, consistency, and responding to adversity. They look great when they're “on”… …and downright broken when they're “off.” Red Wings Rant: Where tirades and impassioned pleas about your Detroit Red Wings finally have a home. Imagine jumping into a game without knowing when it started, when it will finish, what the rules are, or even the objective—without that information, your participation would be totally meaningless! And yet, how many of us are walking through life without answers to those same fundamental questions? In this episode of Ask Away, Vince suggests that every person needs answers to these questions, and only one person can provide them. For many of us, it feels incredibly stressful to unexpectedly find ourselves in a religious or political conversation with anybody, friend or stranger, who holds radically different views from our own. When that happens, how do you handle the situation? And what does the other person walk away thinking and feeling, after they have encountered you? This week on Ask Away, Jo Vitale considers how Jesus Christ handled being in a similar situation, and what his approach means for us today. ------ We're so glad you joined us for Ask Away. If you have a question that needs answering, we'd love to hear it. Send us an email at askawayquestion@gmail.com or call and leave a voicemail at (321) 213-9670. The Detroit Red Wings' rollercoaster start to the season continues — but this week, it's all trending upward. After being booed off home ice, Todd McLellan's explosive timeout lit a fire under Detroit, leading to a six-goal comeback and a dominant 5-2 follow-up in St. Louis. Matt and Mike dive into what Max Bultman called “the night that showed both sides” of this team — one that can look disjointed and unstoppable in the same 60 minutes. We'll break down: McLellan's message behind the mouth-covered timeout rant and how accountability fuels this group Dylan Larkin's MVP-level start (8 goals, 8 assists through 10 games) and why he's dragging this team into relevance Alex DeBrincat's breakout and rediscovered rhythm The Edvinsson-Seider pairing's impact and the power play's resurgence The Gibson/Talbot goaltending puzzle and what it means for consistency Grand Rapids Griffins' undefeated start — John Leonard's tear, Carter Mazur's injury, and Nate Danielson's rise Heading into a tough West Coast trip (LA, Anaheim, San Jose, Vegas), the Wings sit second in the Atlantic with 14 points and the league's eighth-best record. The question now: can they turn this from a hot start into a sustained run? Timestamps: 0:00 – Intro & comeback recap 5:15 – McLellan's timeout and leadership tone 11:30 – Dylan Larkin's MVP campaign 18:10 – DeBrincat's goal and the top line's resurgence 23:00 – Edvinsson & Seider defensive dominance 28:00 – Gibson's good but not great start 33:10 – Griffins update & next-man-up talk 38:00 – Previewing the West Coast trip Red Wings Rant: Where tirades and impassioned pleas about your Detroit Red Wings finally have a home. We all have desires, but what are we supposed to do with them? Which makes for a better life—pursuing or suppressing desires? Indulging them or fearing them? In this episode of Ask Away, Jo and Vince talk about the role of desire in the Christian faith, and if the real problem might not be that we want too much, but that we're settling for far too little. ------ We're so glad you joined us for Ask Away. Perhaps the two greatest callings for a Christian are to live with God and to live with God's people. Tragically, many who go by the name Christian are doing neither, having been deceived into settling for the counterfeits of believing intellectually in God and going to church. What if we need to completely reframe how we conceive of the Christian life? If you've been trying to live as a Christian for a long time but always find yourself thinking, “Is this really it?,” this episode is for you. ------ We're so glad you joined us for Ask Away.
