On November 5, 1970, Shahnaz Gul was arrested by the Karachi police on charges of killing Mustafa Zaidi. She was represented by S S Shaikh, one of Karachi's most well-known lawyers. The trial was a media circus -- Shahnaz was hounded by press photographers. Dozens of members of the public went to the hearings, hanging around court to catch a glimpse of Shahnaz, whose legendary beauty is still spoken of with reverence in Karachi. Shahnaz's lawyers maintained that she was innocent. Lawyer Sara Malkani joins the episode to talk about the trial, and how women are treated by the criminal justice system in Pakistan, and what has changed for women in the past fifty years.About Sara Malkani: Sara Malkani is an advocate of the High Courts of Pakistan with over 10 years of experience practicing law. She has extensive experience in criminal litigation, family law, labor and employment law, constitutional litigation and international human rights law. Sara has a Juris Doctor from the University of Michigan Law School at Ann Arbor and a B.A. with high honours from Princeton University, where her thesis was awarded the Class of 1869 Prize in Ethics.  Sara actively pursues human rights cases and has an extensive pro bono practice. The content of this inspirational podcast has largely been inspired by Ron's writing. Although the book was published in 1993, it has already delivered some breakthrough distinctions I really should have known years ago. I hope it works for you too. In this special Laura reveals all about the mental struggles that led to her break from the sport prior to claiming her maiden individual British title in 2017. Having won team European and World gold medals in 2013 and 2014 respectively, struggles with injury, confidence, identity and her mental health soon took over.  After reaching the lowest point of her career, Gallagher took the decision to step away from trampolining in late 2016 but she was totally unaware that the problems were seeping into her personal life as well as her sporting life. In particular she struggled with the nagging sense she hadn't fulfilled her potential. The last 12 months have proved to be quite a year for the 22-year-old from Manchester.  She started 2018 working 40 hours a week as a chef but ended it as part of British Cycling's BMX team - with BMX Freestyle Park set to make its Olympic debut at Tokyo 2020.  Making the Games is Charlotte's long term goal but there is plenty more to achieve in the short term - both in terms of workload and perfecting her skills. The Scottish racer is just 19 but has a wealth of talent and is showing great potential for the future - in 2016 she won the Teenage Cancer Trust scholarship and in 2017 she was selected for the Scottish Motor Sports Academy. In this interview Emily takes us through her journey in motor sport and how it brought the best out of her, considering she was a naturally shy individual beforehand. She also tells us what it means to be a female racer in a largely male-dominated sport and she talks about how the sport helped her come back from a tough moment in her life when her school was suddenly closed, leader her mother - a teacher at the school - losing her job. With the new women only W Series also generating plenty of headlines Emily gives us her opinions on the concept and she details the challenges facing every driver as they look to climb the ladder - and it's mainly funding. Alasdair Hooper and Will Moulton are joined by the co-founder of Totally Runable Natalie Jackson on episode 31 of SportSpiel. **Feature Interview** On our feature interview section (5:24) Will chats to Natalie about Totally Runable as well as the idea behind the #SeeSportyBeSporty campaign.   The premise of the campaign - devised by Natalie and former Olympic sprinter Emily Freeman - is a simple one, too increase the visibility of women's sport in the media.  Totally Runable conducted their own research into this lack of visibility, buying a copy of each of the UK’s top newspapers once a month between July 2017 to June 2018. Alasdair Hooper hosts a Judo Special ahead of the IBSA Judo World Championships with British team member Evan Molloy. The 19-year-old from Devizes is the youngest member of the eight-strong British team being sent to the 2018 World Championships in Odivelas, Portugal (held from November 16-18).  However, though Molloy may be one of the more inexperienced members he has more than enough determination.  Having only started the sport aged 13 after his parents wanted him to lose a few pounds the teenager instantly took it.  In his words, judo turns him into a different beast.
