Powder Puff to W Series: The Evolution of Women-Only Racing (Chris Lezotte)

Throughout its storied history, motorsports has been unwelcoming to women. Consequently, it has been necessary for female racers to develop unique strategies to enter what has long existed as an exclusive masculine enclave. While entry can be facilitated through a familial relationship with a male driver, women without such connections often get their start through participation in women-only racing events. Although these races have provided women with the opportunity to enter the track, they have not been without controversy. Detractors argue that women will not be considered legitimate racers unless they compete on the same track as men. Proponents view women-only racing not only as a way to attract more women into the sport, but also as an important source of skill development, support, and community building. Chris Lezotte investigates the evolution of women-only racing, from its early introduction as a media stunt, to its current incarnation as a proving ground for serious female open-wheel racers. Informed by archival resources and motorsport scholarship, it considers how women-only racing complicates, facilitates, and liberates women's entry, participation, and recognition in the masculine world of motorsports. ===== (Oo---x---oO) ===== 00:00 The Evolution of Women-Only Racing 03:34 Early History of Women in Motorsports 06:40 Powderpuff Racing and Its Impact 10:17 The Rise of All-Female Racing Teams 15:28 The W Series and Modern Developments 22:19 Debate on Gender Segregation in Racing 24:12 Q&A Session 32:27 Closing Remarks and Credits ==================== The Motoring Podcast Network : Years of racing, wrenching and Motorsports experience brings together a top notch collection of knowledge, stories and information. #everyonehasastory #gtmbreakfix - motoringpodcast.net More Information: https://www.motoringpodcast.net/ Become a VIP at: https://www.patreon.com/ Online Magazine: https://www.gtmotorsports.org/ This episode is part of our HISTORY OF MOTORSPORTS SERIES and is sponsored in part by: The International Motor Racing Research Center (IMRRC), The Society of Automotive Historians (SAH), The Watkins Glen Area Chamber of Commerce, and the Argetsinger Family - and was recorded in front of a live studio audience.

After an unpredictable, weather-filled weekend at Road America, Conor Daly and co-host Chase Holden return to Speed Street to recap the historic action. On the IndyCar side of the event card in Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin, race fans saw rain plague practice two and most of qualifying, leading to a spectacular crash by Josef Newgarden that halted the Fast Six session as Colton Herta was in the midst of his final run. The result was Ganassi Racing rookie Linus Lundqvist scoring his first career IndyCar pole, a position he wouldn't hold long as a fracas broke out on the opening lap of the grand prix. Conor explains that Lunqvist's own teammate Marcus Armstrong was to blame for the pile-up that saw several contenders, including Colton Herta have their race days become much more complicated. In the end, race strategy prevailed, and a decision to stay out an extra lap before the last pit cycle brought Will Power to the front of a Penske podium sweep, snapping his two year winless streak. The IndyNXT Series also experienced historical happenings as Jamie Chadwick brought home the victory at Road America, making her the first female to win in the series since Pippa Mann in 2010. Jamie joins the show to discuss her victory and what it means for her career and other women coming up in the motorsports ranks. She explains that a lot of her transition from the W Series to the IndyNXT was spent preparing for the physicality of the racecars, which she explains are bigger and more powerful than she had experienced before. Jamie credits her engineer and driving coach with making adjustments in the car that have helped her quickly adapt, and after a 12th place points effort in her rookie season last year she had begun to hit her stride in 2024. Jamie expresses that while she'd love to race Formula One in the future, she is on the path to race in IndyCar and feels that this year's IndyNXT field is great preparation for the challenges that lie ahead.

They discuss how the injury could put Malukas behind because he could miss a hybrid test, and even the first race of the season. They weigh some of the possible drivers that could fill in for Malukas, including Conor Daly and Tony Kanaan. They also got into some open seats and who could fill them, like Dale Coyne Racing. They round out the first segment by listing possible unannounced entries for the Indy 500.  Later in the first hour of the show, Kevin and Curt recap Kyle Larson's test session at Phoenix and how he almost lost control of the car, and how that experience could benefit him in adjusting to IndyCar racing.  Kevin rounds out the first hour answering some listener questions, including how much turnover contract-wise there will be next season.  In the second hour of the show, Kevin starts things by reading a few more fan tweets, including a fan question about IndyCar having a playoff, and defining the big three of IndyCar. They revisit last show's discussion on guaranteed starting positions for the 500 and talk about how guaranteed spots seem to equal less entries overall, and the status of the Argentina fall race.  During the second hour, Kevin interviews Jamie Chadwick. Chadwick talks about her performance in the W Series, and the challenge of jumping into F1. She goes into depth on what she has been doing in the offseason, and how she has adapted to racing in America.  Kevin ends the show previewing 100 Days to Indy. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

The all-female motor racing championship, the W Series, has goneinto administration. The series was founded in 2019 in response to the lack of female representation at the highest levels of the sport - Formula 1 has not had a female driver compete in a race since 1976. The W Series saw three seasons of racing, where it showcased the talents of racers such as three time champion Jamie Chadwick, Alice Powell and Sarah Moore. Rebecca Clancy, motor racing corrrespondent at the Times and Sunday Times explains more. Woman's Hour broadcast live from Glastonbury for the first time on Friday. Ahead of their performance on The Other Stage Anita interviewed The Nova Twins. A feminist band who have destroyed the narrative about who gets to make rock music. Adored by millions for their wholesome image, BBC investigative journalist Chloe Hadjimatheou talks about her new Radio 4 Intrigue podcast series Burning Sun, which explores the sex scandals of 2019 in Korea that brought down some of the world's biggest K-pop Stars. She also delves into the world of spy cams and talks about the misogny that some believe is causing a crisis in the country. Krupa speaks to Tamara Gillan, who has created a network called WealthiHer, which aims to help wealthy women take control of their financial futures and advise wealth managers on how to better tailor their services women, and to Sarah Roughsedge at Eva Wealth Management for Women.
