Introduction: Minutes 0 to 11:00 I watched Paradise with Sterling K. Brown on Hulu and didn't like how it ended. Chandra felt the same way about Feud: Capote vs. The Swans. I love The Pitt on HBO. We've both been watching Severance and love the performances. Chandra is watching The White Lotus and recommends Court of Gold on Netflix. I watched Heretic but don't recommend it. Oscars: Minutes 11:00 to 19:00 We had the Oscars this week and Chandra's favorite movie, Anora, won the most awards. We're glad Mikey Madison won for best actress over Demi Moore. Demi won plenty of awards and didn't go home empty handed. I wish that June Squibb was nominated for best actress for Thelma, my favorite movie of 2024. It takes a ton of money to campaign for an Oscar. Royals: Minutes 19:00 to 36:30 Since we last recorded we had the Invictus Games in Canada and Duchess Meghan's show With Love, Meghan came out. Last week, before the release of With Love, Meghan, Kate and William visited Wales and were such obvious copy-keens. They visited a cake shop and “made” cakes and Kate was sure to mention her jam and said she'd give the recipe to someone. Then we got a weaksauce story from a royal expert claiming Kate didn't marry for a title, but Meghan did. There's been a real silence from the palace as they figure out how to copy Meghan. I remember when Kate copied Meghan's Zoom background. With Love, Meghan is a sweet comfort watch where she makes food and does crafts with her friends. I've watched the first five episodes so far. Chandra has watched the whole thing and loves the episodes with Roy Choi and Vicky Tsai. It was cute to see Meghan interact with her friend Abigail Spencer. We talk about some of our favorite recipes including the salted fish and fried chicken. We recorded this episode before the news that With Love, Meghan got a second season. Chandra wants Roy Choi to go on again. She thinks the vocal critics of the show have never watched a cooking or lifestyle show. The critics want Meghan to be all things at once. In season two we hope they don't change things too much and just make little tweaks. Meghan was very smart this week about her PR including being on the cover of People. I play a segment from Zoom where we talked about With Love, Meghan. Comments of the week: 36:30 to end Kaiser's comment of the week is from EmpressCakey on the post about Ione Skye's new memoir. My comment of the week is from Jess on the post about Jennifer Garner thinking Ben Affleck has a dark side.  Thanks for listening bitches!

1.35 million applicants received a military entrance physical from 2016 to 2020, and about 15% of them received an initial disqualification. More than half of these disqualified applicants sought a waiver, and they were more likely than not to get approved. This whole system can be frustrating and opaque, so in this episode we dive into the medical standards and waiver process with a guest who was deeply involved. Dr. Christopher D. Meyering is a board-certified Primary Care Sports Medicine physician. He attended medical school at the Arizona College of Osteopathic Medicine, Midwestern University and subsequently completed his Family Medicine internship and residency training at DeWitt Army Community Hospital at Fort Belvoir, VA. Following a 2-year assignment in Germany, he completed a Sports Medicine Fellowship at the Tri-Service Primary Care Fellowship at Fort Belvoir, VA. He is certified by the American Board of Family Physicians with a Certificate of Added Qualification in Sports Medicine, and he is a Fellow of the American Academy of Family Physicians. Dr. Meyering retired from the U.S. Army after 21 years of Service which included 3 combat deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan as a Battalion Surgeon for Infantry, Armor, and Field Artillery units. Several key positions during his career were assignments as the Command Surgeon for the U.S. Army Training and Doctrine Command which oversees all recruiting and training for the entire U.S. Army; the Command Surgeon for the U.S. Army Recruiting Command which made him the medical waiver authority for the Army; and the Division Surgeon for the 1st Cavalry Division. Dr. Meyering was the Chief Medical Officer for the 2022 and 2024 DoD Warrior Games held in Orlando, FL. Additionally he was the co-medical lead for the 2021 Invictus Games held in The Hague, The Netherlands and for the 2023 Invictus Games in Dusseldorf, Germany. He is currently the Chief Medical Officer for all upcoming DoD Warrior Games and is the Medical Lead for Team U.S. at the 2025 Invictus Games in Vancouver and Whistler, Canada. He is the author of multiple peer-reviewed articles, book chapters, and published abstracts, and he has presented at international and national conferences and events. He was previously the assistant team physician for George Mason University and covered all collegiate sports. He volunteered medical services at multiple levels and events to include the Marine Corps marathon, the Army 10 miler, the Augusta Half Iron Man Triathlon, All Army Wheelchair basketball, USA National and Golden Gloves Boxing events, Army combatives tournaments, professional fast pitch softball, and Special Olympics. We reference a lot of data from this AMSARA report "Accession Medical Standards Analysis and Research Activity"Some other relevant reporting on the issue includes this piece from The War Horse and this discussion of recent changes from AUSACOL (R) Meyering told a story about national media attention on some of his work, and you can find that coverage here

WHAT IF I THINK I'M SAVING MY COUNTRY - FROM TRUMP? - 2.17.25

Countdown with Keith Olbermann

Play Episode Listen Later Feb 17, 2025 66:17 Transcription Available

SEASON 3 EPISODE 99: COUNTDOWN WITH KEITH OLBERMANN A-Block (1:44) SPECIAL COMMENT: There's a small problem (naturally) that Trump overlooked (of course) when he misquoted (evergreen) the probably-apocryphal (saw that coming) Napoleon quote "He who saves his country does not violate any law.” The problem should be obvious. What if I think I'm saving my country FROM Trump? What if you think you are saving your country FROM Trump? Set aside for a moment the implicit stochastic call to terrorism or just law-breaking from Trump to his supporters. What about his message to them? Us? You? Me? Did he just indemnify all of us? Seems kind of dangerous. On the other hand, seems like something that somebody who has slipped fully into a delusion of universal support would say. The implications are, like Trump and Musk, just staggering. ALSO WHY IT'S TIME FOR A NEWS BOYCOTT OF THE WHITE HOUSE: Again, I don't have enough space or words to tell you how much this won't happen, but the response to the White House attempt to dictate what the Associated Press gets to write (and open the path to telling you what YOU get to write) should be obvious and unanimous: don't send any reporters to the White House or Air Force One until the AP is restored. And I'm sure The Washington Vichy Post and The New York Bothsidesist Times and CNN (Certainly Not News) will be right out front. On the other hand, there IS a good media pushback idea: A Democratic Shadow Press Secretary,. B-Block (31:25) THE WORST PERSONS IN THE WORLD: Some Dominican voters in Reading, PA, who according to the Mayor there voted for Trump because they just assumed when he said he'd deport "illegals" he'd give them amnesties because they're good people. Mark Zuckerberg is back, suppressing ads for the ever-controversial (checks notes) Invictus Games. And Jim Vandehei and Mike Allen praise the "masculinity" of Musk and Trump even though the four of them don't have enough masculinity to fill up a thimble. C-Block (40:00) THINGS I PROMISED NOT TO TELL: A confession. I didn't lie when I said why I discontinued the 2016-17 GQ Series "The Resistance." Nor did I tell the entire truth. I will now. It involves a threat against me, an inadvertent meeting with old SportsCenter friends, a deep hatred of the topic of Trump, and the firing of a loyal colleague.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Introduction: Minutes 0 to 4:00 I am recovering well from a hysterectomy. Chandra had a stomach virus last weekend which is why we didn't publish on Sunday Oscar nominated movies we watched: Minutes 4:00 to 13:30 There are no spoilers in this section. We both loved Conclave as we discussed in the last episode. I want it to win best picture. I saw Emilia Perez before the controversies and I really liked it. We both saw Wicked. Chandra liked it more than I did. She loved Anora and wishes that Mikey Madison would have done a bigger Oscar campaign. We both hated The Substance and wonder why it's getting so much buzz. We both saw A Real Pain and liked it. We wonder why Denzel Washington wasn't nominated for his performance in Gladiator II. Chandra liked Maria and was hoping Angelina would be nominated. She saw A Complete Unknown and thought Timothee Chalamet was great in it. I highly recommend Day of The Jackal on Peacock and am watching Paradise on Hulu. We're both watching the second season of Severance. Royals: Minutes 13:30 to 22:15 In early January we got the announcement of Duchess Meghan's new lifestyle show on Netflix called With Love, Meghan. She's also back on Instagram. Her show was supposed to premiere on January 15th, but was delayed until March 4th due to the terrible wildfires in Los Angeles. NGN settled with Prince Harry on the day the trial was supposed to start. If Harry hadn't taken the settlement, it would have altered the case. This was a win for Harry since NGN admitted guilt. Harry's security case is still in the courts. The Invictus Games are going to be February 8th to the 16th in Vancouver. We hope Meghan is there most of the time, but we'll see. The Vanity Fair cover story on Harry and Meghan came out a couple of weeks ago. It's very similar to the British narrative we've been hearing about their relationship for years now, and it's insidious and despicable. Chandra wrote some good analysis about how the piece was meant to tear Harry down before he testified against NGN. Princess Kate and Prince William have done so many events this week. Kate's surprise visit to Royal Marsden hospital on January 14th was curiously timed. Politics: Minutes 22:15 to 29:30 Following the horrific plane collision between a US Army helicopter and a commercial flight, Trump did a press conference and blamed DEI policies. Both the plane crash and the response by Trump were predicted by a University of Maryland political science professor. He tweeted on January 29, a day before, that there weren't enough air traffic controllers and that Trumpers would blame a crash on DEI. Trump had recently fired the head of the FAA and put a hiring freeze on air traffic controllers. We're frustrated at people asking Democrats to do something. It will probably take some time before people realize that they were wrong to vote for Trump. Comments of the Week: Minutes 29:30 to end Chandra's comment of the week is from SussexWatcher on the post about Prince William visiting a farm. My comment of the week is from Rai on the post about Chappell Roan. I didn't delete the comment I was responding to, it was just at the bottom and I missed it when we were recording. Thanks for listening bitches!

Our Daily Bread Podcast | Our Daily Bread

Our Daily Bread Podcast | Our Daily Bread

Following a challenging tour in Afghanistan, Scott, a sergeant in the British Army, fell apart. He remembered: “I was in a dark place.” But when he “discovered Jesus and began following him,” his life changed radically. Now he seeks to share the love of Christ with others, especially veterans with whom he competes in the Invictus Games, an international event for wounded and injured members and veterans of the armed forces. For Scott, reading the Bible, praying, and listening to worship music grounds him before going to the Games. God then helps him “to reflect the character of Jesus and show kindness, gentleness, and grace” with the fellow veterans competing there. Scott names here some of the fruit of the Spirit that the apostle Paul wrote about to the believers in Galatia. They struggled under the influence of false teachers, so Paul sought to encourage them to stay true to God and His grace, being “led by the Spirit” (Galatians 5:18). By doing so, they would then produce the Spirit’s fruit—“love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control” (vv. 22-23). With God’s Spirit living within us, we too will burst forth with the Spirit’s goodness and love. We too will show gentleness and kindness to those who surround us.
