Throughout the twentieth century women's rights to compete in sport at international level started to be realised, with major tournaments and competitions starting to, reluctantly, open their doors to female athletes. Nonetheless, this battle had been difficult and long for many women's sporting organisations who relied on dedicated committee members to push forward an international playing agenda. Formed in 1926, the All England Netball Association (AENA) was the first dedicated governing body for the sport, aiming to expand netball's reach by providing opportunities for girls and women to participate in such activities beyond the confines of the schools within the United Kingdom by disseminating rules and establishing competition across the Commonwealth. However, with no globally agreed laws, there was difficulty providing international competition. To unify netball, the AENA committee brought together key netballing figures from across Australia, New Zealand, Ceylon, South Africa and the West Indies in the hope of agreeing a new version of the game for international dissemination. This was realised in 1960 when the International Federation of Netball Associations (IFNA) was established, with AENA members being awarded selection of the first officers as a tribute to their dedicated work in bringing many netballing nations together. This paper will explore the development of netball's international governance, considering the efforts of the AENA committee in creating a unified voice for netball. Samantha-Jayne Oldfield is a senior lecturer in sport history and the sociology of sport at Manchester Metropolitan University. She is an associate editor for Sport in History and is an academic consultant for England Netball's netball heritage and archives group. A founder of the Netball History Network, she is committed to establishing an international community of netball scholars and publications, whilst developing her own research project surrounding the founding women of England Netball and the construction of a more comprehensive history of the organisation.

Netball used to be one of the most important things in Nat Panagarry's life – but that has all changed. Last year Nat's wife Katie was diagnosed with stage four clear cell cancer and life as they knew it was turned upside down. Suddenly playing netball for England and Loughborough Lightening paled into insignificance for Nat compared to what she and her wife were facing. Unsurprisingly it has been a rollercoaster journey for the pair. There have been hospital appointments, chemotherapy and they have both had to tackle hurdles no one in their 30s expects to face. As Nat admits in this SportSpiel podcast episode, there were moments of anger. Many in their situation would ask – why them? They were no different. But there have also been moments of hope and happiness. In November the pair tied the knot and the countless messages of support they have received as they share their journey on social media have been overwhelming. Throughout it all playing netball for Loughborough does still play a key part in Nat's life. Now that the 2023 Netball Super League season is back up and running that's become very apparent, although she openly admits her approach is different. In many ways it's also unknown as she embarks on her first full campaign balancing everything off the court as well. What is unmistakeable in this episode is Katie's inspiration and the hurdles the couple face together are also a key reminder of the larger things in life. It also serves as a reminder of how much you can take from the person you love the most regardless of how tough the situations are. While the focus now is very much on Katie's battle with the disease, Nat and her wife are determined to raise as much awareness as possible. One charity who perform such vital work in that area is Look Good Feel Better, who are partnering with England Netball for the return of their annual charity netball tournament on Sunday, March 26 to raise awareness and funds for the charity. Taking place at Warwick University, the tournament is open to teams looking to battle it out with an amazing cause in mind. With incredible prizes and goody bags on offer it's a perfect opportunity to raise awareness for such a vital charity. As captain of the England netball team, six-footer Ama Agbeze reached the PINNACLE of tall girl success. Her combination of height, skill and unwavering perseverance earned her a gold medal at the commonwealth games and an MBE for her services to netball. Ama talks frankly about how she has has struggled to come to terms with her height away from the netball court, and also offers some great advice for coping with career knock-backs and sharpening resilience. We also discuss what parents should do if their children are showing sporting promise (is it ok to be pushy?) and how tall people can very quickly become unpaid supermarkets workers.
Chris Cushion is Professor of Coaching & Pedagogy at Loughborough University as well as the Head of Coaching at England Netball. Chris is one of the most well known researchers in the world of sports coaching and has published widely. I asked Chris to join me to disuss the nature of 'direct instruction' which he argues has some to mean something in coaching that is not an accurate way to depict it. Chris and I have disagreed in the past about this subject so we thought it was hight time we got together and had a proper discussion about this area. Needless to say, we didn't stop there...we also discussed...How poor coach education is as a means to effectively support coaches and develop thier skillsWhy coach development is so under valuedWhy technique led coaching is still so prevalentWhy the 'toolbox metaphor' limits coaching effectivenessIt was a really interesting and valuable conversation. Hope you enjoy

In one of his most emotional and heartfelt interviews to date, Gary opens up about precisely what drove him and his similarly successful siblings on - his brother is the England-capped footballer Philip Neville, while his sister is the former Head Coach of England Netball, Tracey Neville - despite their very humble origins. A legend of Manchester United and a former captain of the club, he goes into detail about precisely what made the team culture of the Sir Alex Ferguson years so strong, why its so sorely lacking now, why he's felt the need to speak out more on social and political issues, and why everything he does is for the city he grew up in and calls home. Even after all these years, he's still bringing glory back to Manchester. Topics: How did you and your family become so successful in sport? What the cost of your drive? You're self disparaging about your skills Alex Ferguson's mindset What you have you learnt from Sir Alex about culture? Why are Manchester United failing now? Professor Chris Cushion is currently the head of coaching at England Netball and a professor of coaching and pedagogy at the famous Loughborough university in England. When it comes to the coaching environment, practice and coach behaviours Chris is one of the most prominent researchers in this space with over 100 publications and over 8000 citations from other authors and researchers. One of the things that sets Chris apart from a lot of his peers is that he has also had an exceptional coaching practitioner career in football as well as his distinguished career in academia and this ability to have what is effectively a foot in both camps helps with bringing research to life in practical settings. In this episode I want to talk to Chris about both his practical experiences and his research and how he and other coaches can effectively combine research in their practice. I felt like there was some really valuable coaching advice from Professor Chris Cushion in this episode. For me the use of questioning and how to apply it was gold for me. I know as coaches we often discuss the importance of questioning, however applying it and following it up with further practice to initiate a change in behaviour is vital. As coaches its also really important to schedule questions and into your coaching program – you can prepare these before the session to pre-empt learning situations rather than make things up as you go. Secondly I really learnt a lot around Chris's discussion on feedback – knowing the best times to use feedback, how to apply it effectively and what you are trying to achieve. Finally thinking outside the square and using other teaching and learning strategies from educational research can enhance your coaching. As learning theories can certainly be applied to coaching to enhance athlete learning. Rosenshine's principles of instruction could be a great place to start if this is of any interest and can be accessed by a google search. I hope you enjoyed the discussion with Professor Chris Cushion, he is an absolute legend of coaching research. While other sports like cricket and rugby are being played on our shores against visiting international teams, the Diamonds series against England has just been cancelled as a result of covid restrictions. Australia has long dominated International Netball and have only been challenged by near neighbours New Zealand. When it was announced that the 2018 Commonwealth Games was to be held in Australia's Gold Coast, the writing was on the wall. Australia was destined to win another gold medal, but this time, they would get to win it in front of their adoring fans, on home soil. However, a seasoned England team had other plans. Despite never progressing past the bronze medal, Netball England had been busy working on a plan to win silver. But could they actually win gold? This is the story of one of the most dramatic conclusions to a sporting event ever. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
As CEO at England Netball, Jo transformed the sport's profile, participation and performance, with Gold at the Commonwealth Games and a home World Cup. Find out more here.
Netball is played in schools across the UK, but as a professional sport has had little recognition. When the England Netball team took home Gold at the Commonwealth Games last year, that changed. Head Coach Tracey Neville joins us to discuss the impact that moment had, and what she loves so much about the game.In the UK, there are 800,000 disabled children under the age of 16 - nearly all of them live at home and are supported by their families. But what happens when their behaviour becomes so challenging you struggle to look after them? We look at the difficult decision to consider whether residential care might be the answer not only for them but for you and the rest of the family. We hear from Sharon King, mother of three older children all of whom are on the autism spectrum, and Amanda Batten Chief Executive Contact a charity for families of disabled children.Breast ironing is a way to stop teenagers' breasts from growing. It's painful and sometimes involves large, hot stones pushing down on the breasts. Hammers or spatulas are also used, and so are elastic belts or binders. Usually mothers do it, calling it tradition and saying that it stops their daughters being sexually attractive or sexually active. It happens in several African countries but cases have been recorded in the UK too, although it's impossible to know the true scale. This week the UK Government has called it child abuse and says it will be dealt with in law.
