Meet Anna Stishova, an adventurous paddler hailing from Russia, whose paddling journey began in the UK in 2011. With a strong initial focus on white water kayaking, Anna's path took an unexpected turn towards flat water marathon racing due to various challenges she encountered along the way. As a dedicated paddler, Anna not only pursued her own goals but also became a staunch advocate for inclusivity in the sport. Let's delve into Anna's inspiring story of determination and community impact. Overcoming Obstacles and Chasing Dreams: In 2015, Anna faced a significant setback when an elbow injury from a bike accident forced her to put her athletic pursuits on hold for six months. However, Anna's indomitable spirit remained unwavering. In 2016, she earned her Coaching Paddlesports qualification and generously volunteered at the Leaside Trust in London, sharing her knowledge and passion for the sport. Anna's ultimate aspiration was to complete the formidable Devizes to Westminster International Canoe Race, a challenging 125-mile-long journey often referred to as the "Kayaker's Everest." Undeterred, she participated in this demanding race twice, first in 2017 and then in 2018, paddling in a K1 kayak. Although her first attempt resulted in disqualification on Day 3 due to a minor time delay, her second endeavour faced unexpected adversities as adverse weather and treacherous water conditions forced the entire race to halt on Day 2. During her time at Leaside, Anna crossed paths with Sirin Arif Gisel, a young Turkish girl who had relocated to the UK from Romania. Recognising Sirin's potential, Anna invited her to be her Junior-Veteran kayak crew for the 2019 DW race. Their collaboration paid off handsomely as they successfully completed the race, becoming the first female Muslim K2 crew to conquer the DW challenge. With Anna's achievement, she became the first hijabi Muslim woman, to finish the race. Life's Transformations and Continued Resilience: In 2019, Anna tied the knot shortly before the DW race and subsequently moved to Bolton. The following year, she experienced the joys of motherhood, along with the challenges posed by the Covid-19 lockdowns. Anna herself contracted the virus in April 2020 and continues to deal with its lingering effects.  Furthermore, the combination of a demanding pregnancy, labor, and the pandemic led to a decline in her fitness levels. However, Anna discovered solace and rejuvenation by joining the Bolton Canoe Club toward the end of that challenging year. Her passion for paddling even inspired her stepchildren to explore the sport. Advocacy and Recognition: Anna's dedication and remarkable achievements within the paddling community did not go unnoticed. In 2021, she was honoured to become a #ShePaddles Ambassador for British Canoeing, serving as a role model and advocate for female participation in the sport. She also joined the Inclusion Advisory Group for British Canoeing, actively contributing to the development of the organisation's Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) strategy for the years 2022 to 2026. Looking ahead, Anna continues to be a shining example of perseverance, determination, and the power of inclusivity in the world of paddlesports. Her journey serves as an inspiration to all those who dare to chase their dreams, overcome obstacles, and make a lasting impact on their communities. *** Don't miss out on the latest episodes of the Tough Girl Podcast! Helena Russo, the Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Lead at British Canoeing discusses this topic with: Nerys Hall, who is in her final junior year of marathon and sprint racing Caragh McMurtry, who is a former Olympic rower and founder of Neurodiverse Sport Nerys and Caragh have been diagnosed with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and high functioning autism, respectively. Together, they discuss their sporting achievements, what their diagnosis means, and how it has affected their sporting lives. They go on to explore the barriers they have faced and the strategies they put in place to improve performance. The main part of the episode involves Caragh and Nerys giving top tips to coaches so that they consider neurodivergence and adapt their coaching practice accordingly. I am so thrilled to welcome Emma Love to The Joy of SUP Podcast today. Here's Emma: When I was 45yrs old, I along with my  very young son had our very first go on kayaks at Holme Pierrepont National Water Sports Centre, Nottingham.  While on the water, we saw some children playing on paddle boards. We quickly exchanged our kayaks for SUPs + I was hooked! This was the beginning of an incredible journey.  Five years later, my writing is published online with British Canoeing, I was the 2nd woman in the UK to qualify as a British Canoeing White Water SUP Coach!  In 2020 I became a British Canoeing #She Paddles Ambassador. In 2021 I was invited to join the Californian Watersport Collective Ambassador programme. The role of  #ShePaddles Ambassador has  empowered me to speak + write about my own paddling journey to inspire other women. This has included podcasts in the UK with SUPFM, in USA with Paul Clark, and with Etienne Stott, Olympic Slalom Gold Medal Winner. In February 2021, I was thrilled to write a series of interviews celebrating the explosion of women in the White Water SUP coaching route for SUPMagUK.  I am very proud of this year long project and so honoured to chat with Jenna Sanders, Jessica Phillip, Lisa Boore, Charlotte Louise, Louise Royle, Beth Kirby, Julie Vigor and Joyce Johnston.  All incredible women, inspiring paddlers + talented coaches. Summer 2021 I took a tucked away dream of mine + turned it into a reality - my very own SUP coaching business Wotbikini Stand Up Paddleboarding.   I specialise in building women's confidence on the water via stand up paddle boarding.  I am very pleased to be a British Canoeing Delivery Partner.   It was an amazing first season,  wonderful to support so many inspiring women.  We have learnt together, developed, laughed + really enjoyed having time on the water.2021 my business was nominated for two British Canoeing 'Delivery Partner' Awards.  I am delighted to have been selected for both the 2022 'Engagement Award Finalist' & 2022 'Quality Experience Award Finalist'. 2022 – SUP Mag UK - Interviewing 8 of the 16 #ShePaddles Ambassadors about their SUP Journeys.https://www.britishcanoeing.org.uk/news/2019/hear-from-emma-love-on-her-journey-to-become-a-sup-white-water-coachhttps://www.britishcanoeing.org.uk/news/2020/looking-to-try-something-new-why-not-try-stand-up-paddleboarding-on-wwhttps://www.britishcanoeing.org.uk/news/2020/menopause-paddling-and-becoming-a-sup-white-water-coachFind Emma: Website:          wotbikinipaddleboarding.co.ukFacebook:       Wotbikini Stand Up Paddleboarding  Instagram:      @WotbikiniSUPThank you to Bluefin SUP for sponsoring Season 3!Any questions, please email healthyhappyfifty@yahoo.com.Instagram: @thejoyofsuppodcast_Follow #thejoyofsuppodcast on Twitter + InstagramWebsite www.jomoseley.comPlease also rate + review us on Apple as it will help more people find us!Thank you for listening, Jo xPlease ensure you follow all safety advice and do what is right for your fitness levels and body.

Lee Pooley speaks with Lucy Boyce, who is a Coaching Adviser at British Canoeing, a recent masters graduate in Sports and Exercise Psychology at Loughborough University and a keen canoe polo player.  They discuss Lucy's research into the subjective experiences of athletes of choking and clutch performance in order to reach a better understanding of the factors that can impede or promote superior sport performance. Lucy explains the importance of creating a psychologically safe training environment for athletes to reduce choking performances to improve their mastery and performance. Lucy and Lee also explore what is involved in creating that environment, the factors that can lead to choking performance and how coaches can identify and support those likely to choke in pressurised situations. She also makes very practical suggestions on how to capitalise from choking and clutch performances. Lucy's dissertation is available from the British Canoeing Awarding Body Digital Library here.

Clare Rutter grew up in rural, coastal west Wales with childhood days often spent with her brother playing and exploring in nature, climbing trees, jumping hay bales, cycling the green and lush country lanes and time spent on the beaches exploring rockpools, playing in the sand and swimming in the sea. Everyday was a mini-adventure in Clare's eyes which was only added to by joining the Brownies, the Guides and later the Scouts when girls were (finally!) permitted to join across all age sections. At age 6 and continuing through her participation in these youth organisations, Clare began her journey in paddlesport thoroughly enjoying kayaking and canoeing.    Now, after more than 25 years spent in the Scouts, Clare has many ‘on the water' hours paddling and has been on many Scouting adventures including working at a large, commercial Scout summer camp and activity centre, expeditioning in Africa, multi-day tall ship sailing, led the Welsh Contingent at a Boy Scouts of America National Jamboree and volunteered as a staff member at two World Scout Jamborees in both England and Japan.    As studying for a degree, worklife and life in general took over; paddlesport unfortunately had to take a back seat. In 2016, Clare fulfilled one of her lifelong goals and moved abroad to Gran Canaria which in itself was an almighty adventure. Unfortunately, Clare experienced some kind of a medical episode whilst on her way home from work, passed out, hit the deck and entered a 30 minute unconscious seizure state. This episode resulted in a life changing traumatic brain injury.    After several months with no signs of recovery from the resulting symptoms which included headaches/migraines, severe fatigue, insomnia, tics and balance and cognitive issues and declining mental health; Clare decided to give up her home in the sun and return to Wales for further neurological investigation and treatment and to have the support of her family and friends. Clare, at this point was mostly bed bound and used a stick to aid walking but returned to Scouting as illness allowed.    Clare's Brain Injury Team Occupational Therapist encouraged her into some further volunteering which, returning to her childhood roots, she undertook at a local outdoor activities centre offering land and water adventures including canoeing, kayaking and stand up paddleboarding.    A change in medication tackled Clare's condition to the point where she could function better on a daily basis, could ditch the walking stick and experience better mental health. After a season at the centre, Clare was offered a full-time position which she gladly accepted and begun her journey towards training and qualifications to be a paddlesports Instructor on a permanent basis.    A short time after the first Covid-19 lockdown, Clare was informed that she had been selected from multiple applications to be the first ever women's paddling ambassador for Wales, a #ShePaddles Ambassador; a role to tackle the low numbers of females getting into and staying in paddlesport. Despite the lockdowns, Clare threw herself into the voluntary role and together with Canoe Wales and British Canoeing had an incredibly successful first year providing an online Welsh women's friendly and welcoming paddling networking hub and providing paddlesport taster sessions to hundreds of females at #ShePaddles ‘On Tour' events across Wales.    Whilst still battling illness, known as Post-Concussion Syndrome, with her symptoms mostly masked, Clare is now a full time, qualified Paddlesports Instructor & Leader and regularly supports clients with neurological conditions, mental health issues and a range of disabilities enabling participation, enjoyment and progression in paddlesports utilising the outdoors as therapy and rehabilitation as she did.    She's also a guest speaker speaking at events sharing her motivational and inspirational brain injury story and is still heavily involved in #ShePaddles and #ShePaddlesCymru (in Wales). Clare is passionate about paddlesport and you'll usually find her on the water in her spare time, committed to relearning, redefining and challenging herself and her abilities to prove that given some adaptations and self-belief that almost anything can be achieved. Aside from paddlesport, Clare also enjoys writing, camping, geocaching, photography and videography and enjoys sharing her experiences, challenges and adventures across her social media channels.   New episodes of the Tough Girl Podcast go live every Tuesday at 7am UK time - Make sure you hit the subscribe button so you don't miss out.    The Tough Girl Podcast is sponsorship and ad free thanks to the monthly financial support of patrons. Did you buy a kayak or perhaps a paddle board after lockdown? And do you know where you can go now? According to Nick Hayes - who lives on a houseboat on the River Thames - you can only legally access around three to four percent of England's waterways. Scotland has the right to roam. Nick is the author of The Book of Trespass and uses his canoe to go shopping and take out his rubbish too. This is fine on his section of the Thames, but he has been confronted on other rivers .... so who owns our waterways, and what exactly are the rules? With further contribution from Ben Seal of British Canoeing, and produced in Bristol by Miles Warde.

Adya discovered the joy of being out on the water later in life, when she moved to Stockholm, Sweden and discovered kayaking in 2014. Kayaking in the lakes and the Baltic Sea was, at the time, the best way to escape the stress of daily life and connect with nature.    Working in scientific research left little free time to enjoy her new hobby, so a few years later she ended up pursuing a new career that would allow more time for kayaking. Adya fell in love with sea kayaking as soon as she tried it in Dorset and has been on several expeditions in Greece and Sardinia.   Adya trained to become a sheltered water kayak/canoe coach in London to share her love of kayaking and canoeing with others and enjoys coaching small groups of paddlers at her local canoe club. She also blogs about her adventures, hoping to inspire other women with full time jobs to try paddlesports while incorporating safety advice for everyone.   After moving to Liverpool, and a less than ideal sea kayaking trip in Wales, Adya considered giving up sea kayaking for good but missed being on the water. Her love of watersports encouraged her to try paddleboarding in the Liverpool docks. With the help of a supportive coach, Adya managed to stand up on a board (and more!) giving her the confidence boost she needed at the time. Adya managed to get back into a sea kayak and now also does a lot of coastal paddleboarding.   She is currently a British Canoeing #ShePaddles club champion, the paddle boarding discipline lead at her canoe club and an On Planet Patrol Community Guardian. These volunteer opportunities allow Adya to focus on some of the biggest problems we face as a society: lack of representation and climate change.    With her paddling, blogging and #ShePaddles work, Adya hopes to raise awareness of the lack of diversity in paddlesports and help improve gender, ethnic and neuro-diversity in the paddlesports community.   New episodes of the Tough Girl Podcast go live every Tuesday and Thursday at 7am UK time - Make sure you hit the subscribe button so you don't miss out.    The Tough Girl Podcast is sponsorship and ad free thanks to the monthly financial support of patrons. Etienne Stott, Olympic Gold Medal winner from London 2012 investigates pollution and water quality in our waterways. Etienne gets stuck in to finding out more about his issue with his guests. This is an audio version of a live conversation over facebook and YouTube. So why should paddlers care about this? As you'll hear, there are plenty of places with sewage issues. When we enter into these waterways we're at risk of gastroenteritis; ear, nose and throat infections; skin issues and even hepatitis and e-coli. So even just touching your boat could put you at risk. Amy Slack is from Surfers Against Sewage and Ash Smith if from Windrush Against Sewage Pollution(WASP). She claims our rivers are being treated like open sewers and that issues that were once affecting the coastline has now been switched inland. Surfers Against Sewage started 30 years again when a bunch of surfers were fed up of becoming ill by being in the sea. Now it's a national campaigning organisation concerned about water quality, plastic pollution and the climate emergency. WASP looks out for the Windrush in Oxfordshire and was set up to try to improve the quality of the water as they felt other agencies weren't doing enough. Ash tells Etienne about the sort of chemicals that are ending up in the waterways with long lasting effects. I am so thrilled to welcome Natasha Lovegrove onto The Joy of SUP Podcast.  Natasha is the founder of The Kind Store and I discovered her on Instagram when I was looking for a great plastic free shampoo + conditioner. She recommended Kind 2 (which I now use) and I realised she was a paddleboarder! She is also a big fan of hugging trees which is something I love doing too! Natasha discovered paddleboarding by chance in Slovakia in 2015. She has always loved board sports, including high adrenaline wakeboarding and snowboarding. She thought SUP was just something she could do on holiday, but was reintroduced to the sport through her interest in plastic pollution and the work of Lizzie Carr and On Planet Patrol paddleboarding litter picks. She realised it was a wonderful way to marry her two interests - board sports and caring for the planet. Based in Essex, Natasha created The Kind Store over 2 years ago as she struggled to find products that met all of her principles and thought there must be more people like her wanting to reduce their single use plastic consumption. She's been vegetarian, now vegan, for nearly seven years and this is what kick-started her journey into sustainability. She also has a successful career as a Chartered Building Surveyor and runs The Kind Store at night. She and her husband married in summer 2020 in Cornwall. Like many of us, SUP offers Natasha the chance to escape the demands of a busy working life and gives her a space, place and time to unwind and relax.  I am keen to show all the possibilities of SUP on the podcast and share the important role it can have on our physical and mental wellbeing. I think many of us will relate to Natasha's story. Topics we also cover:The Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation requires an extra license in addition to the Waterways License available from British Canoeing. Always check the waterways to know where you are allowed. Stopping to reflect and celebrate how far we have come either in business or our paddleboarding journey. Natasha didn't grow up as a 'water baby' but found water sports a little later in life. We all find our way to SUP on different paths. You can find Natasha on Instagram @thekindstoreuk  + The Kind Store.  Photo credit Natasha Lovegrove.Thank you for listening! I'm thrilled to welcome Dr Adya Misra to The Joy of SUP Podcast. I discovered Adya on Twitter and love her passion for coaching other women in SUP + kayaking as well as her commitment to the environment. I also admire how she made a decision to change her research career so that she could incorporate SUP + coaching into her life. There are so many valuable lessons within Adya's story I am honoured to share it.Adya discovered the joy of being out on the water when she moved to Stockholm, Sweden and discovered kayaking in 2014. Being inside a research lab 24x7 left little free time to enjoy her new hobby, so a few years later she decided to change careers and get her weekends back. After kayaking for several years, and craving a challenge while living in a new city, Adya tried paddleboarding in 2019  in Ireland and a few months later bought her own board. She is a flat water kayak coach and loves leading small groups of paddlers at her local canoe club near Liverpool. In the soundbite clip she also shares her joy of paddling in the Liverpool Albert Docks.  Adya also blogs about her adventures at Gone Paddling, hoping to inspire other women with full time jobs to try paddlesports while incorporating safety advice for everyone. She is also a British Canoeing #shepaddles Club Champion hoping to improve representation of women at her local canoe club not just as members but in more leadership roles. We cover some really interesting topics around women in paddlesports from both a coaching and participation perspective. I found this really fascinating, in particular around technique and using our bodies in a more effective way. With her paddling, blogging and #shepaddles work, Adya hopes to improve gender, ethnic and neuro-diversity in the paddlesports community.Right at the end of the podcast, Adya also shares her brilliant news with us having recently become a On Planet Patrol Community Guardian. You can follow Adya on Twitter @DrAdyaMisra   You can follow her on Instagram @queenadya Read her fabulous blog Gone Paddling.Links here to find out more about British Canoeing and the #ShePaddles campaign and #ShePaddles Club Champions.Read more about On Planet Patrol.Adya talks about paddleboarding in the Albert Docks in Liverpool. For those who enjoy the freedom and rights to walk in or on our National Parks, Footpaths and rural byways in fact anywhere which is recognised as a national Right Of Way you are probably unaware of the historic nature of how this came into being following the Kinder Scout Trespass of 1932.Kinder Scout was a turning point in outdoor history. Without it we would be excluded from all wild places which would be fenced off and under strict private control of landowners through the UK.Currently access to the inland waterways in the UK is restricted to 4%. Imagine if we only had access to 4% of the the land and parks and open places we take for granted. We would be outraged and yet the water based enthusiasts have to accept this, or do they? There is currently a campaign gaining momentum for all water based enthusiasts, paddlers, wild swimmers, SUP users to gain Clear Access Clear Waters and work in harmony with other respective organisations to find a path through this confusing legislation. The waterways are no different to our other land based highways. Everyone from walkers to lorry drivers have to work with all the other users to maximise use and pleasure and functionality from the highways. Be it walkers, cyclists, equestrian, motorbikes, cars through to heavy good vehicles. This interview is with Ben Seal, Places To Paddle Manager at British Canoeing who are a main instigator in this campaign for all water enthusiasts. if you feel strongly about what you hear place sign the petition and support their efforts.

I was honoured to work with her during my year as a #ShePaddles Ambassador.  I'm grateful I can thank her publicly on the podcast. This episode was recorded in December 2020 when Cadi was running the #ShePaddles programme at British Canoeing. This is a programme to encourage more women + girls into paddlesports and  develop their leadership + coaching roles.#ShePaddles has a number of elements: a) The 10 Women's Paddlesports Ambassadors who share a love of paddling across their social media and blogging. b) A Sport England funded programme to develop a 100 women and girls as coaches and leaders across the country in clubs. c) the Women's Paddling Community, a 2500 strong community on Facebook where women can support each other, make new friends and build their confidence. In this episode, we talk about: how the #ShePaddles programme helped increase the numbers of women joining British Canoeing since its beginning 5 years ago when the figure was 27% female membership. In 2020 40% of the new members joining British Canoeing were women. why it is important to join BC for your Waterways License - allowing  access to 4500 kms of waterways, providing insurance + supporting campaigns such as Clear Access Clear Waters environmental work. the Paddles Up Training Opportunities and Go Paddling website + resources available at British Canoeing. On a personal level, Cadi is happiest when out running the trails with her dog Brew Dog, or wild swimming in a cold lake with friends. Nature has been a huge influence in her life and helped her through the death of a partner to suicide and the loss of her Mum to cancer last year. Her desire to chase positivity and help others find theirs has led her to qualifying as a Life Coach and she plans to use the outdoors, alongside coaching to create positive change in people's lives now she has left British Canoeing. Cadi first tried SUP many years ago but thought it was only something to be done at the beach. I'm so thrilled to introduce Sarah Blues to you. I discovered her on Instagram after I had shared details about being part of Sport England's This Girl Can campaign and Sarah commented on my post. I was struck immediately by her commitment to support other women who wanted to enjoy paddleboarding safely and comfortably and her #PaddleKitHerWay campaign. Sarah completely embodies one of the themes of the podcast that 'we rise by lifting others.'Sarah lives in Weymouth, Dorset by the beach. She grew up there and her family life revolved around the sea and the community. Her father was second coxswain on the RNLI Lifeboat and Sarah gig rowed and swam in the sea. She moved away from Weymouth for university and lived in Hertfordshire for 10 years. Her job is in marketing and communications. She returned to Weymouth just before the 1st lockdown in the UK and took up SUP in summer. She immediately fell in love with SUP and everything it gave her in terms of confidence and a place to unwind. She first thought it would be a summer sport but loved it so much that she wanted to continue in the winter months. However, as it got colder, she found it increasingly difficult to find kit that would keep her warm and safe.  Most brands only go up to a UK size 16 in women's ranges and as a UK 18 and around 6ft tall, she felt very excluded from the leading brands. They simply didn't have the range she was looking for. Sarah realised that if she was finding it difficult to get the right kit, then other women would be facing the same problem, but no one was talking about it. She set up her Instagram account @plussizepaddler to share her own story and encourage other women to share theirs. She realised that kit sizing and design was a barrier facing many women who wanted to continue to paddle in the winter months but felt they couldn't. Rather than give up, Sarah set herself a mission to campaign for kit that fits and works for women over size 16. She shares inspiring stories and is spreading her message in the media. She was recently featured on British Canoeing's channels. In this wonderful conversation, Sarah also shares how she has learned to enjoy exercise for herself and as a way to look after her body, noticing how she has improved her skills and her achievements. Her confidence has grown and she feels braver.  Sarah also talks about the impact joining a supportive club - the Dorset Race Club - has had on her life since returning to Weymouth, bringing her friendship and focus. This has inspired her to set herself a huge LEJOG SUP challenge in 2021 since recording our episode together. You can find out more on her Instagram page @plussizepaddler and her website www.plussizepaddler.com.109 Watersports is https://www.facebook.com/109watersportsDorset SUP Community https://www.facebook.com/groups/777479452629450/McConks https://mcconks.com/Thank you for listening! I'm so thrilled to share India Pearson's episode with you. I discovered her on Instagram and was struck by the light and kindness that shines through. I think you will love her too!India is a yoga + SUP Yoga teacher, presenter and founder of Fin and Flow based on the Kent Coast in Hythe. As a former dancer, India found yoga after struggling with anxiety and the unforgiving pressures that can be felt in the performance industries. After what felt like a 'mid 20's crisis' India changed her mindset and started focusing on what fuelled her soul, instead of what felt expected. She left London, moved to the Kent coast, trained as a yoga teacher and developed a passion for watersports including SUP!The more time India spent by and on the water, the more she noticed a positive impact in her own mental and physical health. Not only this, she also wanted to give back and protect the coastline, running regular beach cleans and fund-raising initiatives for environmental charities. India currently runs yoga/beach cleans for Planet Patrol and in June 2020 embarked on a solo SUP trip, to paddle board the length of the Royal Military Canal between East Sussex and Kent in 1 day whilst litter picking and raise money for a '2 Minute Beach Clean Board' on Hythe Beach. With the help of a friend and trusty mobile phone India has put together a film of her adventure, to highlight the damage litter and most importantly plastic pollution is having on our waterways.India has combined her passions together and founded Fin & Flow, a hub for like minded people to connect through wellbeing by the sea, from yoga to paddle boarding  wild swimming, walking and beach cleans.India is also a proud ambassador for Hatha Paddle Boards and #ShePaddles, an initiative run by British Canoeing that inspires women to engage in paddle sports. In this episode, India shares lots of wonderful and helpful information about SUP Yoga - from what to wear to what to expect and how it can really benefit us, meditation and mindfulness. In those roles she used biometric measures to help improve performance and she now applies those methods in the business world helping FTSE 100 bosses and others improve their stress resilience and confidence. In this episode we talk about those methods: how to take control of your confidence and unleash your potential by exploring her four domains of resilience that will enable you to perform at your best: the physical (how well you're sleeping, nutrition, recovery); mental (what's your mental load); the emotional (how good are you at self regulating and shifting out of negative moods) and identity (what are your values and what do you want your legacy to be). Olympic gold medal winner Etienne Stott meets three inspiring women and hears about their paddling adventures. Jo Moseley calls herself a joy encourager, a mid-life adventurer and a beach cleaner. In August 2019 at the age of 54 she became the first woman to Stand Up Paddleboard coast to coast from Liverpool to Goole. She called it Paddleboard the North and raised money for two charities and picking up litter along the way.Jo's a single mum, empty-nester and this journey was a voyage of personal discovery. Jo wants women, especially of her age, to feel welcome on the water. She feels women can become disconnected from their bodies but she's proud that she lifted her board in and out of more than 90 locks on the canal to give her a confidence that spreads into everyday life. For 11 days she felt the most 'me' she'd ever been.Emma Kitchen returned to the water after going through a tough few years in her life and is back loving the white water. She really wants more women to get into paddlesport and wants to tell everyone why the water can be great for mental and physical health. She calls it escapism in a busy world. Emma used to go paddling with her dad and joined her local canoe club. But fell out of the sport for 19 years before returning a couple of years ago. She also goes SUP'ing and is setting up a community club in Castleford.Jo and Emma are both proud Women's Paddling Ambassadors for British Canoeing. And they're joined by Cadi Lambert, who leads the #ShePaddles programme for British Canoeing. For Cadi, it's much more than a job. It's a complete passion. She's driven to help other women to return to the water or try it for the first time - whether it's on a board, on a raft or in a canoe. And then helping women to get where they want to be in the sport such as becoming a coach or leader. The guests discus access, the environment and rubbish on the riverbanks. Olympic canoe slalom gold medal winner Etienne Stott hosts the first episode in a new series of inspiring stories from paddlers all over the UKIn this series presented by British Canoeing he'll be meeting paddlers and chatting with them to find out what inspires them into the sport and the environmental challenges they face.Etienne travels to Cromford in the Derwent Valley in the Peak District to meet the founder and boss of Peak UK, kayaking equipment. Pete Astles started paddling as a youngster in the Lake District and moved to Nottingham to train as a teenager. He moved on to making garments, taught himself to sew and has never looked back. His kit is used around the world. And Pete tells us about the secret testing that helped GB win an Olympic slalom gold medal at the Rio Games in 2016.Alongside his business, Pete is working on Paddle Peak - a great example of how a community of paddlers is trying to get more access to the waterways of the Peak District. At the moment there are relatively few places where paddlesports are welcome in an area famous for its outdoor sports. Paddle Peak is trying to change that.He wants to inspire kids to have the chance to take up the sport, regardless of income. And he wants to make sure the beautiful countryside is open to all.Pete and Etienne go to the Derwent Valley to talk about the project, go out and the water and talk about the things they've pulled out in river clean-ups - from laptops to road cones. A vacuum cleaner and a kid's slide. Pete reckons there's a ton of rubbish in a short stretch of river and how paddlers can play a key role in clearing it up. But he has a problem. There are barriers to access and Pete wants to get all river users together to come up with a code of contact. Etienne also meets 15 year old Alex McDermott who's a paddler, a member of the Youth Parliament and a force for change. Joe and his brother have been carrying out river surveys to investigate microplastic pollution. He tells Etienne he was shocked at the results. Finally Ben Seal from British Canoeing sums up what he's heard and hopes the stories have inspired other paddlers to take action. ------For more information on:Clear Access Clear Waters - British Canoeing's Environment Charterwww.britishcanoeing.org.uk---Paddle Peak Projectwww.paddlepeak.org---Cromford Mills Visitor Centrewww.cromfordmills.org.uk Peak UKpeakuk.com---Youth Parliamentwww.youthparliament.org.uk---And on twitter you can find Etienne@etiennestott

Again, this week we're at the World Road Cycling Championships in Yorkshire which was wrapped up with a rain affected men's elite road race. The event was delayed and had a significant route change in order to protect the welfare of spectators and participants after heavy rain in the White Rose County. We speak to Mads Pedersen who eventually took the Rainbow Jersey as well as Yorkshire's own Ben Swift who was one of the two British finishers in a brutal contest. After all the build up, the World Athletics Championship is underway in Doha. Great Britain and Northern Ireland have won a silver medal on the opening weekend courtesy of Dina Asher-Smith in the women's 100m. Asher-Smith became the first British winner of a global sprint medal since Dorothy Hyman in 1960 at the Olympic Games in Rome.We also discuss the empty seats and issues over the heat and humidity which has been causing issues with some events - although Michael argues that the rain in Yorkshire also posed threats of their own and asks why the hot weather in Qatar has become an obsession when we just shrugged our shoulders at the risks in Yorkshire.Elsewhere, British Canoeing are edging closer to naming their team for the Olympics and there could be one or two shock omissions, notably Rio 2016 champion Joe Clarke, after the results at the recent World Championships. We also have tennis, shooting, trampolining and windsurfing news for you.
