We kick off episode 138 by reliving the pain of England's record 434-run defeat by India in the 3rd cricket test. In football's Women's Super League (WSL), Manchester City drew level at the top of the table with reigning champions Chelsea, after City won 1-0 in the clash between the two. It was the start of Rugby League's Super League season, with the unveiling of exciting new laws - whilst we also fire a deserved "Get a Grip" broadside at the Rugby Football League and their marketing consultants for their ridiculous plans to have Super League places decided by spreadsheets. It was also the start of the Netball Super League season, with champions Loughborough Lightning starting with a win, but Manchester Thunder showing that they will be right in the mix. With the final week of the World Aquatic Championships in Doha there was double gold in the 800m & 1500m for Ireland's Daniel Wiffen, whilst in the UK Indoor Athletics Championships Gemma Reekie set a new 800m championship record, Laura Muir was dominant in the 3000m and Molly Caudery booked her place in the GB squad for next month's World Championships in Glasgow with a season leading result in the pole vault. We have 10 different sports for you in this week's episode, as well as a fantastic guest. We kick off with the Superbowl, where late drama meant the Kansas City Chiefs retained their title, and the presence of a certain pop star boosted audiences to the most watched broadcast in America since the moon landings. In rubgy, England spluttered to a dreary win over Wales, Ireland kept up their winning ways and Scotland were cruelly denied when a would be last minute winning try was chalked off by the video ref. And in cricket there are injury worries for both England and India ahead of the 3rd test in Rajkot. It was the Women's FA cup 5th round this weekend and Manchester City, Liverpool, United and Chelsea all went through to the quarter finals, with the stand out fixture in next month's games being holders Chelsea away at London rivals Spurs. In athletics we have the sad news of the death of marathon world record holder Kelvin Kiptum, who was killed in a car crash aged just 24 –a real loss to the distance running world. In New York Josh Kerr and Laura Muir were both breaking records winning the indoor 2-mile event, whilst Gemma Reekie won in France, meaning all 3 are building nicely towards next month's indoor world championships in Glasgow. Our guest this week is Colin Wood, a local triathlete who qualified for last year's Ironman World Championships in Nice. Colin shares with us his story- how he got into triathlon, how just 6 weeks before his first Ironman he could only swim a couple of lengths of the pool and how he manages to fit his training around his roles in the police and as a single father to 3 children. A truly amazing guy with a great story. Another brilliant episode!

The running world tragically lost one of its brightest lights, Kelvin Kiptum, the world record holder in the marathon, the man who in 10 months revolutionized how the marathon can be run, tragically passed away at the age of 24. We pay our respects. Then we turn to an amazing 2024 Millrose Games where Devynne Charlton started things off by breaking the world record in the 60m hurdles but the highlight was Josh Kerr running 8:00.67 to break the 2-mile world record and take down Grant Fisher, plus American records by Ellie St. Pierre, a big run by Yared Nuguse, Hobbs Kessler and even Cole Hocker. "When I started making senior teams, I thought, “I want to compete at all six championships.” I did that and then was like, “I want to make a final in all six championships.” I did that and then said, “I want to win a medal at all six championships” and I have done that. I've defended titles, I've broken records and championship records. The only thing that's really missing is the global title, which is very hard to get… But I'm going to keep trying and that's all I can do." Great Britain's Laura Muir, the Olympic 1500m silver medalist and three-time 1500m world championship medalist, will return to the 116th Millrose Games at The Armory on Feb. 11 to defend her NYRR Wanamaker Mile title. In this conversation, Laura and I look back at her 2023 season – which was a bit turbulent at times since she parted ways with her longtime coach Andy Young, coached herself briefly and is now working with Steve Vernon. Despite the sudden changes, she still managed to run a season's best of 3:55.16 for the 1500m and managed to make the World Championship final in Budapest, where she finished sixth. One highlight was running 4:15 for the mile in Monaco for a British record. While we look back at last year, we also look ahead to 2024 where she plans to run the 3000m at the World Indoor Championships in March and then go all-in toward getting back on the podium in Paris. A massive week in British distance running with the Olympic 10000m trials and we've got Tokyo-bound, Marc Scott, on to talk us through his race. Matt has been gracing the trials with his presence in the B race. Josh is hitting the miles, and worried about a hot air balloon ride. We say it so often, we might as well replace that part where Jody and Bayo forget their social media handles at the end of each episode with this refrain, but: the British middle distance trials are going to be something else. Olympic qualifying standards are casually scattered up and down the domestic rankings, and we are truly spoilt for choice when it comes to world-class athletes over 800 and 1500 metres. In 2020, we had three women in the global top ten over 800 metres, and four in the metric mile. Laura Muir's so phenomenal that we no longer bat an eyelid when she runs sub-four minutes, and Jemma Reekie was breaking British indoor records for fun last winter. Keely Hodgkinson is the fastest teenager there's ever been over four laps of an indoor track, and there are some seriously speedy juniors nipping at her heels. With that in mind, we caught up with three of our favourites - Sarah McDonald, Melissa Courtney-Bryant, and Reekie - to discus this gloriously congested landscape of middle distance excellence. If you enjoy the episode, please do leave us a quick review or rating, and let us know in all the usual places: @BackstraightB and @Claire_GThomas on Twitter, or @BackstraightBoysPodcast on Instagram.Don't forget to check out runnersneed.com, and to use 'backstraight' for 15% off at the checkout. There's regular athletics back on our screens, which is heaven (cheerless cheerleaders in Lievin aside). With Euros just around the corner, we take a deep - far deeper than planned, as per - dive into the performances we've enjoyed so far. From the absurdly talented Grant Holloway, to the fact that Laura Muir ran 3:59 and was beaten by six seconds. From the contrasting styles of two huge middle distance talents - Elliot Giles and Jakob Ingebrigsten - to the gift that keeps on giving: the pole vault. Oh: and the handful of world records we've seen. There are those, too.The crowning jewel this week is Claire's chat with Trayvon Bromell, who is back and better than ever. His world-leading 6.48 marks a return to form for the 2015 World medallist, who explains the struggles he's faced to be back at the summit of sprinting, and what motivates him each and every day. Bromell's passion is infectious, and we're thrilled that the men's 100 metres - for the first time since Bolt - is exciting once more, and full of Bayo's three Cs: competition, charisma, and consistency. Blunt Dissection: The best minds in veterinary medicine, academia & business profiled so you can learn from their experience.

On today’s show, I’m joined by double European record holder, gold medalist, and Olympic athlete, Laura Muir. Laura made her debut in senior athletics representing Great Britain at the 2013 World Championships and is the current British record holder over 1500m. In 2017 she had an incredible year becoming the fastest woman in the world over this distance, taking her first diamond league world title and winning two gold medals at the European Indoor Athletics Championships, breaking a 32-year old championship record along the way. So what does any of this have to do with veterinary medicine? Well not content with taking the athletics world by storm, Laura achieved many of these feats while completing her veterinary degree at the equally world-beating Glasgow University Veterinary School! In fact, Muir missed the chance of gold at the 2018 Commonwealth Games, opting instead to focus on passing her veterinary medicine finals. But in August that year, she was back and achieved her greatest honour to date winning gold in the 1500 metres European Championships in Berlin, the first British woman ever to win this title. And you thought it was hard to go for that early morning run twice a week! Now a quick word from today's show sponsor. If you are working in practice and clients or colleagues are making you miserable then I have good news and bad news. The bad news is you are probably the source of your problems. The good news is that you are also 100% in control of changing things and having a great career. You are missing some skills and they are NOT clinical. Enter Thrive. Thrive is a course and support community where you will learn the professional skills needed to build a sustained and successful career. With RACE accredited webinars, workbooks, and live monthly mentoring events you have all the tools to set you up for success. Membership is available for a small monthly fee where you can join hundreds of other vets who have changed their careers for the better. To join visit www.vetxinternational.com today and if you use the promoted 'podcast' then you’ll receive 10% off your monthly membership fee. Now back to Laura, For many, rising to the very top of their field, ego can be a problem. In Laura’s case, nothing could be further from the truth. In fact, you get the sense that she is the same person today, as she was when she first went cross-country running as a child, through the frozen fields around her school in Kinross. The interview with Laura was an incredible pleasure and rare insight into the mind of someone who knows what it takes to suffer for her art. Doing a veterinary degree is hard enough, but doing so while performing at the highest level as an international athlete boggles the mind. So sit back, or maybe go for a run, and enjoy this my conversation with the record-breaking Flying Scot, Laura Muir.

Safe to say we all had *big* Friday nights... from our sofas... drowning in world record attempts, huge performances, and that ubiquitous green-and-blue Nike race kit. That's right: athletics - proper athletics - is back, and Monaco. Went. Off.Joshua Cheptegei broke Bekele's 5,000m WR, Baby Ingebrigsten has his first European Record, and Faith Kipyegon ran the second-fastest kilometre of all time.Laura Muir broke a British Record, Laura Weightman is now behind only Paula Radcliffe on the all-time 5000m list, and Jake Wightman is also sitting pretty in second after his 3:29.47 performance over 1500m. Cracking runs by Gemili, Reekie, Langford, and Pozzi, too.Amongst all the drama and blink-and-you'll-miss-it heroics, there was the soothing constant of Karsten Warholm, setting off at a speed which appears deranged, but transpires to be genius. He's just the best, isn't he?Anyway - Claire has lots of work to do, so has trusted Jody and Bayo to chat this one through. Expect the usual: strong opinions, forgotten names, and oodles of enthusiasm.@BackstraightB and @Claire_GThomas, if you want to say 'hi'.

Andy Walling is not just the lead Endurance physiotherapist at British Athletics, he also has been a running coach since 1994 and was a respectable runner himself winning a couple of Wales National titles on the track and running a highly respectable 3:47 for 1500m. Since 2007 Andy has been a Physiotherapist for UK Athletics. He has been a physiotherapist at many Major Championships over this time. I first bumped into Andy in Iten, Kenya 2014 where he was the physiotherapist for the UK distance team ( a camp that included the likes of; Mo Farah, Laura Weightman, Charlie Grice, Michael Rimmer, Eilish McColgan, Alyson Dixon, Paula Radcliff etc) that was preparing for the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games. In this interview, Andy shares a wonderful insight into how he got into athletics as a youngster, his role models, his own running career, how he got into coaching and physiotherapy, his experience as a physiotherapist at major competitions/training camps and in the British Olympic Association's Intensive Rehabilitation Unit. I quiz him about, why Mo Farah and Laura Muir are so successful? Andy finishes the interview with a barb about Autralian rugby and he reluctantly answer my question about who he is most excited about in his running squad going forward. I’d personally like to thank Andy for how generous he was with his time in this interview, his detailed answers and how incredibly easy going he was!

How to balance competing demands on your time with top British athlete and qualified vet Laura Muir. Laura is Britain's top middle-distance runner and Scotland's top female athlete who was considered a great prospect for a medal at this year's Olympics before it was postponed. She is also a qualified veterinary surgeon. In this episode she explains how she managed to juggle two such demanding pursuits, and how each one helped her excel in the other. Laura wasn't considered a great athletic prospect growing up. She was a solid if unspectacular runner who wasn't even the best in her school. But when Laura got to university and started working with a coach, her progress was meteoric and now she is among the very best middle-distance runners in the world. As Laura says, that shows how we all develop at our own pace and why loving what you do and sticking at it is often more important than early talent. In this episode Laura explains how she balanced qualifying to be a vet with her running career in 2018, and why learning to prioritise is key. She also talks about the value of not overthinking and choosing to enjoy what you do rather than putting too much pressure on yourself to succeed, which paradoxically makes it more likely that you will succeed. She talks about being conscious of your priorities and sticking to them as well as keeping a level head, asking yourself questions to reduce how stressed you feel, running to clear the mind, routine and being the best version of yourself you can be and not worrying what others think. This is the first of two episodes this week. As ever get in touch with suggestions and questions: @simonmundie.

Oh, and Joshua Cheptegei just dropped a 12:51 5km on the roads in Monaco. 2020 looks set to be epic.Claire's back with the boys this week, with all of the above covered, plus plenty of shout-outs to other Backstraight favourites around the globe (we see you, Amber Anning), an update on Christian Coleman's location, and a look at Joanna Adams' appointment. We also take a moment to savour how healthy much of athletics looks right now. YES, there are troublesome shoes, disturbing revelations about top-flight coaching set-ups, and ongoing issues around clean sport and athletes with DSD, but there's lots to find exciting. There's such strength and depth out there right now, and Team GB are spoilt for choice in so many disciplines, come selection season. Plus, Andy Pozzi is healthy, for goodness' sake; let's relish that at the very least. How brilliant to see him competing consistently well once more. We've had some lovely reviews and feedback in recently. Thank you. The World Para Athletics Championship has ended in Dubai, We hear from Head Coach Paula Dunn on the success of the Great Britain and Northern Ireland team. Athletes from these shores finished third on the medal table with the likes of Hannah Cockroft and Sophie Hahn again on top of the world. There were familar names like Richard Whitehead winning medals along with a new generation of stars getting ready for Tokyo 2020. We discuss the sucess of the para team and how maybe it's time to get beyond the narrative of using words like 'inspirational' and 'super-human' and how we should just be accepting of their incredible athletic endeavours. On track to Tokyo, the British Olympic Association has been threatened by legal action from some of it's own athletes. Big names like Mo Farah, Adam Gemilli, Katarina Johnson-Thompson and Laura Muir want more rights around how they can work with personal sponsors. We look at both sides of the debate and highlight how Team GB is not a publicly finded entity, but continues to send teams that are prepared better than anyone to successive editions of the Olympic Games. In other news, we talk about Any Murray and the Davis Cup. We also have news of British medals in para fencing and para badminton as well as more success for table tennis player Liam Pitchford. Claire's away 'doing rugby in France' (close enough, lads; she's been in both Portugal and West London, and is now - terrified - hitting 'publish' on an episode the boys promise needs only a cursory tidy up in edit...), leaving Jody and Bayo to look ahead to this weekend's British Championships. Last year, we all agreed that the trials were one of our favourite events of the season: brimming with fierce competition, high-quality contests, and the very best of British athletics. Beth Dobbin's post-race interview. Dina's championship record. A women's long jump in which 6.69 didn't even get you a medal. Matthew Hudson-Smith's 400m dominance. Laura Muir's 800m cameo. Glorious weather, even. If this year's anything like as exciting as last, then we're all in for a doozy. That said, we've just been challenged to a 4x400 race by Trackastic, with Kath Merry already offering to commentate, and Beth Dobbin keen to complete our quartet, so the British Champs can only actually be the second best competition of the season, even if they are majestic... Thanks for listening. Thanks for reviewing. Thanks for following us on Twitter (@BackstraightB & @Claire_GThomas) and Insta (@BackstraightBoysPodcast).
