Steve interviews Jeff Passan (00:09:31)from ESPN. Jeff and Steve talk about the return of baseball. Jeff explains why he isn't sure if it will actually return and why he is optimistic that it will. Jeff and Steve debate cancel culture and talk about Steve's frustrations with Twitter and the way Drew Brees was vilified. Jeff has a question for Steve about Pearl Jam and the guys talk about Jeff's fading love of the Cleveland Browns. Also, Scott Ryan and David Lee Morgan (01:12:47) join me to talk about their new book on the Massillon Tigers football team. Scott talks about the tradition of Massillon football, the rivalry against McKinley, and the experience of watching the team's run at a State Championship. David talks about the random circumstances that lead to him coaching the team and explains how he ended up writing a book about it. The show starts with Steve talking about his interview with Jeff Passan and explains why his inability to totally let go and be honest is hurting the podcast and hurt the interview with Jeff. The book club moves on from Andre the Giant and the 1995 Cleveland Indians but still has Yogi Berra and adds a new book. OLT ends the program with an introduction to the great Sawyer Wise. He is the future. For more information follow the podcast on twitter @sports_casters Email: thesportscasters@gmail.com
Kenny & JT are joined by David Lee Morgan, author of "The Massillon Tigers: 15 For 15", and the book publisher, Massillon native Scott Ryan, an in-depth look at the 2019 Tigers season that ended with a loss to LaSalle in the state title. So how did David, a sports journalist, end up as that team's running backs coach? The guys break down that season and the book, which features a foreword by Jim Tressel.
NAZIS NEED JEWS, by David Lee Morgan: a series of 9 poems, first performed at the Morecambe Fringe Festival, where it won the prize for Best Spoken Word Show, further developed at the Edinburgh Fringe, and now published by LONDON POETRY BOOKS.. 1. Don't Stay In Your Lane 2. Conspiracy 3. Antisemitism 4. Bigotry: a user's manual (chapter two) 5. Israel 6. Palestine 7. Building a Nation on Stolen Land 8. The Enemy of my Enemy is not my Friend 9. Communism I started writing this show out of anger at the way the charge antisemitism was being used as a bludgeon against those who were critical of Israel, but also out of horror at the resurrection of antisemitic ideas that I thought had died out with the defeat of Nazism after WW2.Conspiracy theory is not wrong because it is untrue – many theories are true, many are false – it is wrong because it is only one piece of the puzzle. It is a necessary but not sufficient explanation for the evils of capitalism. Nobody is in control, not even the greedy bastards on top. I wanted to do a case study of antisemitism because it is the granddaddy of all conspiracy theory.
What a cool experience for all of these kids from Massillon in this journalism class. David Lee said they are now a part of history.
If you're anything like me, and one assumes you are because you find some value in this humble little podcast, you need constant prodding in a sense. That can either be to get your work done or to get your brain in check. I'm one of those dudes who gets pretty down pretty easily, so it helps to have guests on who inspire me. Enter David Lee Morgan, @davidleemorgan on Twitter. David was a long time sports writer for the Akron Beacon Journal and most recently he turned his attention to teaching high school English, a move he doesn't regret in the slightest. For the people who say “If you can't do teach,” one of the more insulting things you can say to any artist who teaches or teachers who don't, I give you David, who not only is a brilliant writer, but by the very nature of his attitude and approach, makes him that rare teacher that inspires with every lesson. To be frank, I haven't been in David's classroom, but if my 90 minutes with him is any indication of what it's like to sit at a desk in his class, well, sign me up. Oh, hey, this is The Creative Nonfiction Podcast, the show where I speak to the best writers, filmmakers, podcasters, and producers about the art and craft of telling true stories. Here I try and unpack their personal history and also drill down on their routines and habits around getting the work done so you can apply those tools of mastery to your own work. If you haven't subscribed, be sure to head over to Apple Podcasts, Google Play Music, Spotify, or Stitcher and hit that button. Okay, so David is the author of six books, including LeBron James: The Rise of a Star, which was the book on LeBron before he became King James. We talk about garnering trust among sources, being positive, and using slights as fuel. I think you're going to love this episode, now, it's time for the main event. Thanks to our sponsors in Goucher College's MFA in NOnfiction as well as Creative Nonfiction Magazine. What else? Oh, yes, be sure to subscribe to the show and be sure to head over to brendanomeara.com to sign up for my monthly newsletter. New one goes on the first of the month. In GBA 251 we get better acquainted with David Lee Morgan. He talks science, love, revolution, violence, art, history, activism, politics and so much more. In the conversation we trace his creative and political development over the course of his life, how he became an American revolutionary communist who spits words in the UK, and how that relates to where he has come from, the places, people and events he has encountered on the way. This is GBA 200 pt 3 with guest hosts Sophia Walker and James McKay. The #GBA200 season will celebrate 200 episodes of Getting Better Acquainted with a week of daily episodes where the script is switched and the people I know interview me. It's taking place from the 16th-20th of March. The guest hosts are Helen Zaltzman, Chella Quint, Sophia Walker and James McKay, Jen Adamthwaite and Charley Harrison. During this week we'll learn what Getting Better Acquainted might be like if it was made by someone else, and whether I'm a consistent character or not; we'll explore and celebrate how combinations of people and places create wildly different conversations. I'll also be re-sharing and discussing the first 200 episodes of GBA on the show's twitter feed, using the hashtag #GBA200. If you want to join in the celebrations by sharing your favourite episodes, you would be very welcome to do so!
