Great art is timeless—it reveals how we think and why we act. What if classics like Greek tragedy or Shakespeare were used to explore today's challenges—racism, war, corruption? That's what Bryan Doerries and Theater of War have done for nearly 20 years. The results are healing, raw, and real. Listen as Bryan shares how personal loss led him to reimagine an ancient art form for modern times.

On October 28, 2015, Jeanne Carstensen was reporting as a foreign correspondent covering the Syrian refugee crisis in Europe when she witnessed a devastating boat accident. After nearly a decade of research and investigation, Carstensen recounts the events of that day, with firsthand accounts from not only the desperate refugees, but also the heroic islanders who did their best to help.  Of her book A Greek Tragedy: One Day, A Deadly Shipwreck, and the Human Cost of the Refugee Crisis, she says, “I wrote this book because I believe we need to pay attention to the human impacts of our migration policies. Increasingly, we are militarizing boarders, building more fences, and criminalizing those who try to help. I hope A Greek Tragedy will serve to wake us up; my hope is that we will not turn away.” Organizer: Frank Price   An International Relations Member-led Forum program. His research starts from a simple premise - if our self-awareness, the ability to look at ourselves in the mirror and declare that there is an “I” staring back, is truly unique in the animal kingdom, then it likely related to that moment of coming. But no one really knows what happened in the fog of pre-history to ratchet us from the gauzy time before we were fully human to… whatever all of this that we're living in right now could be called. In fact, this is often referred to as the sapient paradox. Why, oh why, did we become genetically modern nearly 300,000 years ago (maybe more) but take until about 50,000 years ago to start doing human things like making art, ritually burying our dead, and tracking the stars? Many have suggested it was psychedelic mushrooms that pushed us over the edge. This is the stoned ape hypothesis, which says that a sufficiently large psychedelic experience pushed us out of the womb of the earth. However, Andrew thinks it might have been something else. He figures it was snakes. And women. Together, they produced the Snake Cult of Consciousness that dragged us, kicking and screaming, into the world.(00:00) Go! Dcn. Harrison Garlick and Adam Minihan are reunited to intro Aeschylus, the Father of Greek Tragedy.Aeschylus (b. 525 BC) was a warrior, statesman, and the father of Greek tragedy. Born into nobility, he grew up in Athens during its pivotal transition from tyranny to democracy. Furthermore, he famously fought in the Battle of Marathon (490 BC), defending a nascent Western civilization against Persian invasion. Aeschylus died in 456 BC, leaving behind a legacy that shaped the foundation of Greek drama.Check out thegreatbookspodcast.com for more information. From our guide on the Oresteia:1. What is the Ionian Revolt? To understand Aeschylus, we must first understand the Greco-Persian War (c. 499 BC to 429). In sum, what is called the “First Persian Empire,” founded by Cyrus the Great around 550 BC, stretched from modern-day Iran, Asia Minor, modern day Israel, and Egypt. In Asia Minor, this Persian empire ruled over Hellenistic city-states. One may recall that Troy, a polis with both Hellenistic and eastern traits, was also located in Asia Minor. In 499 BC, the city-states rebelled against their Persian overlords with the support of Athens in what is known as the “Ionian Revolt.” The revolt failed and the Persians retained control of Asia Minor; however, King Darius of the Persian Empire believed Athens should be punished and elected to invade Greece. 2. What was the first invasion in the Greco-Persian Wars? The Ionian Revolt sparked the larger Greco-Persian Wars and led to King Darius' invasion of ancient Greece in 492 BC. Athens led the federation of city-states against the Persians, and Aeschylus fought for the Athenian army. Notably, Aeschylus and his brother both fought at the famous Battle of Marathon in 490 BC at which the first Persian invasion was defeated.[1] Aeschylus' brother, however, died in the conflict.[2] The Battle of Marathon is often held as a watershed moment in the birth of Western culture. The battle is also the namesake of running a marathon, as the legend has it that an Athenian runner ran the twenty-six miles from Marathon to Athens to tell them of the Athenian victory. 3. What was the second Persian invasion in the Greco-Persian Wars?Ten years later, a second Persian invasion was headed by King Darius' son, King Xerxes. This is the setting for the famous Battle of Thermopylae (480 BC), in which the smaller Spartan force of approximately 7000 men under King Leonidas held off 120,000-300,000 Persian invaders. The word Thermopylae means “hot gates” and takes its name from the hot springs in that area—it is also fittingly one of the mythological entrances to Hades. After Thermopylae, the Athenians won a great naval battle against the Persians at Salamis in 480 BC. Notably, Aeschylus is said to have fought in this battle as well and wrote his play The Persians about the conflict. The Greeks, led by the Athenians and Spartans, would eventually expel the Persians and bring peace in 449 BC. 4. What do we know about Aeschylus' writings?Aeschylus is...

The Odyssey narrates Odysseus's ten-year journey as the king of Ithaca, during which he attempts to return home after the fall of Troy. Virgil's Aeneid chronicles the journey of Aeneas, a Trojan hero and son of the goddess Venus. Aeneas escapes the fallen city of Troy and embarks on a quest to start a settler-colonial project in Italy. Virgil wrote a work of total fiction, and then as if by witchcraft, Augustus traced his (and Rome's) historical origins back to Aeneas. In Jewish Antiquities, Josephus Flavius followed the line of Augustus, adulterating the Bible to appease the ego of his settler-colonial abuser, adopting the same Greco-Roman “literary-historicizing” framework. This may not have resonated with the Jews of the time, but man, would-be Christian imperial colonizers loved his historicizing of epic literature to “build” their apotheosis. What good is Star Wars if lightsabers are not real, if you are not the heir of Luke Skywalker,  and the Republic is not rightfully yours to “possess?”So, thanks to Josephus Flavius, the (sellout, Uncle Tom) closet Hasmonean, and his oversized case of Bible-wrecking Stockholm Syndrome, by now, we've had to deal with two millennia of Hellenized theologians who really believe that Jesus picked up where Venus and Augustus left off. If you want to understand the socio-political consequences of this approach, consider watching independent news media on YouTube. If you want to be set free from the tyranny of Augustus and Josephus, hear the Gospel of Luke. This week, I discuss Luke 7:17-19.Show Notes ἔρχομαι (erchomai) ب-و-ء (bā-wāw-hamza)/ ב-ו-א (bet-waw-alef)The Hebrew verb בוא (bo) and the Arabic verb بَاءَ (bā'a) “he returned” are cognates that trace back to a common Semitic root related to movement toward a point—be it coming or returning. This root corresponds to ἐρχόμενος (erchomoenos) in Luke 7:19, the one who is expected.“‘Behold, I am going to send my messenger, and he will clear the way before me. And the Lord, whom you seek, will suddenly come (יָבוֹא, yāḇôʾ) to his temple; and the messenger of the covenant, in whom you delight, behold, he is coming,' says the Lord of hosts.” (Malachi 3:1)“The Lord God has sworn by his holiness, ‘Behold, the days are coming (בָּאִ֣ים, bā'îm) upon you when they will take you away with meat hooks, and the last of you with fish hooks.'” (Amos 4:2)Related functions in Arabic:بَاءَ (bā'a) To return, to incur, to be burdened with, to bring upon oneself.بَاءُوا بِغَضَبٍ مِنَ اللَّهِ (bā'ū bi-ghaḍabin mina allāh)“They have incurred wrath from God.”(Surah Al-Baqarah 2:61) بَوَّأَ (bawwa'a) To settle someone, to provide lodging, to assign a place.مُتَبَوَّأ (mutabawa'a) A dwelling place. Arabic Lexicon, Hawramani, https://arabiclexicon.hawramani.com/?p=1617&book=50#9b0b27وَلَقَدْ بَوَّأْنَا بَنِي إِسْرَائِيلَ مُبَوَّأَ صِدْقٍ (wa laqad bawwa'nā banī isrā'īla mubawwa'a ṣidqin)“And we settled the Children of Israel in a good dwelling-place.”(Surah Yunus 10:93)تَبَاوَأَ (tabāwa'a) Used in literature to describe competition and contention between characters. The verb carries a negative connotation that implies equality. To be equal with each other. Equality in sin or punishment: state of being equally guilty. القتيلان فِي الْقصاص تعادلا (al-qatīlāni fī al-qiṣāsi ta‘ādalā) “Two dead, in retribution, were tied.” “بَوَاءٌ” Arabic Lexicon, Hawramani, https://arabiclexicon.hawramani.com/?p=63888#dbd19f ★ Support this podcast on Patreon ★

In honor of Veterans' Day, we're revisiting an episode of Art Works that tells the origin story of the transformative project  Theater of War Productions. Co-founded by classicist, translator, and director Bryan Doerries, Theater of War began with a simple yet profound concept: presenting staged readings of Sophocles' plays Ajax and Philoctetes to military communities as a means of addressing both the challenges veterans face and the lasting impact of war on families and relationships. In this episode, Doerries recounts how he was inspired to bring these ancient military tragedies to contemporary audiences, believing they would unlock conversations around trauma and healing. With excerpts of performances by actors Bill Camp, David Strathairn and Adam Driver, this episode explores the initial journey of Theater of War and its impact on military communities, offering insight into how ancient drama opens pathways for veterans to process their experiences.  Now, with over 20 specialized programs, Theater of War Productions reaches diverse communities worldwide, addressing not only the struggles of veterans but also broader public health and social justice issues, including homelessness, racialized violence, and natural disasters. Doerries also discusses the arts' power to heal, showing how storytelling and shared experience allow individuals to confront, process, and share pain. Theater of War taps into this capacity, creating safe spaces that support connection, resilience, and recovery.

The idea of "not speaking ill of the dead" is a deeply rooted cultural and historical construct, and its origins and evolution provide significant insight into the ways societies shape their collective memories. This concept, often summarized in the Latin phrase -- De mortuis nihil nisi bonum -- ("Of the dead, nothing but good should be said"), has existed for millennia, emerging from an interplay of morality, religious beliefs, and the need for social cohesion.

In Europe, as travelling Aston Villa fans and players found out in Warsaw, Amsterdam, Lille and now Athens, there's levels to home advantage. Expecting to overturn a 4-2 home defeat was always going to be a tall order against Olympiacos, but Villa had a strong first eleven and a plan. This week, host Cyrus Palizban invites a single guest, Nico Sarian, to dive into the quote of the week and meander from there! Starting with the quote from Sophocles' “Oedipus Rex”, we take a deep dive into the nature of Greek tragedy, the significance of individual actions and fate, and the impact of historical and cultural context on literary interpretation. The discussion ranges from the origins of the dithyramb of the ancient cult of Dionysus to the many names of Apollo in the further-flung Hellenic reaches to the intricate subtexts of theology, the creative reconstruction of historical narratives, and the philosophical underpinning of tragedy as a genre. As the war in Ukraine rages on into its second year, there remains little consensus or understanding of how the conflict could be resolved outside of military outcomes, and a persisting misunderstanding on behalf of the West regarding Ukraine's own internal preexisting social divisions. This week we're pleased to have a special guest, Dr. Nicolai Petro, a professor of political science at the University of Rhode Island, whose new book, "The Tragedy of Ukraine: What Classical Greek Tragedy Can Teach Us About Conflict Resolution," tackles these questions with unique literary framing. The conflict can not be understood merely on an institutional or rational level, but also must be considered in light of the emotional dimensions, Petro argues. Diving into the texts of Greek tragedies, Petro finds numerous illuminating parables from ancient Athenian society which can serve as frameworks to heal deep social trauma and create more just institutions. In this fascinating conversation with host Robert Amsterdam, Petro explores how he got the idea to approach the war from this perspective, how he responds to recent changes in Ukraine since the outbreak of war, and how the country may endeavor to secure its future.

Happiness Happens

Happiness Happens

Eric Fong is no stranger to adversity. A renowned trial lawyer with over 25 years of experience and hundreds of high stakes civil and criminal cases under his belt, he's seen the worst life can throw at people. But the struggles were often not only in the courtrooms but also in his own life as he grappled with addiction for years. Today, however, he stands on the other side of the struggle as a beacon of hope for those who find themselves in similar hardships. From Lawyer to Addiction, and Back Eric's fascination with law sparked the beginning of his professional journey. As he hustled in the courtrooms, arguing and defending, he fell into the clutches of addiction that affected both his professional and personal life. Eric shared that he was so engrossed in addiction that he became a recluse and stopped accepting cases. The result was catastrophic – his addiction destroyed his practice, created turmoil in his personal life, and cost him his family. Despite several attempts at pledging sobriety, Eric always found himself relapsing. However, after realizing his behavior was rapidly spiraling out of control, he took the first decisive step towards sobriety. Eric turned to various forms of therapy, sought help, and found the 12 Steps Program to be particularly beneficial. It's been more than five years since then, and Eric now stands on the sober side of life, rebuilding not just his career but his entire existence. The Turnaround: Empathy and Compassion for Law Eric's personal journey of overcoming addiction and rejuvenating his life and career gave him an unexpected advantage – increased empathy and compassion for his cases and clients. His difficult past has allowed him to understand other people's struggles in a way that few in his profession are able to. This empathy translates into a stronger commitment towards his clients and a more understanding approach, making him a better lawyer. The Pitfalls of the Wrong Paths Eric's story draws attention to the current state of the criminal justice system, which he describes as a flawed social experiment. He believes that punishment doesn't inherently create change, and it is rather supporting, teaching, and rehabilitating individuals that truly make a difference. The mass incarceration problem, Eric argues, is partly a result of systemic injustice that favors the few who can afford high-quality legal help. Balancing the scales of justice and giving equal legal representation to all, in his view, is a pressing challenge. The Path to Happiness: Mastering Adversity When it comes to happiness, Eric stresses the importance of confronting one's unhappiness. The pathway to happiness is rooted in understanding and acknowledging whatever is making us unhappy, he says. We must confront our fears, the things that cause us shame or embarrassment, those aspects that prevent us from achieving happiness. Eric Fong's life delivers a powerful message. Overcoming addiction, rejuvenating a derailed career, and becoming a voice for justice reform – Eric's journey illustrates the innate human potential for transformation and resilience. His belief in redemption, rehabilitation, and the power of empathy offers hope and a beacon for those finding their own path out of adversity. It serves as a reminder that happiness doesn't come easy, it requires conquering difficult times, and it is in overcoming adversity that one can truly find the source of happiness – a source that Eric Fong found on his journey and shares with people he represents today. After all, happiness happens when we least expect it, especially when we embrace and overcome our struggles.  We'll touch on: 0:00 Intro 4:20 What does happiness mean to you 05:49 Life as a Greek Tragedy 10:26 Should most offenders have the opportunity to rehabilitate? 15:57 The need for creative thinking in leaders and the problem with having older leaders 21:33 Eric's story with addiction 25:12 The moment he decided enough was enough 29:45 How his experiences have affected his work as a lawyer 31:21 Keeping empathy for the people he works with 33:22 Looking critically at the law 36:45 One way you take care of your mental, physical, emotional, spiritual health 38:58 How to create a little more happiness in your day, every day, starting today   Resources: Podcast Resources: https://www.simonacostantini.com/resources  Apply to be a podcast guest: https://forms.gle/ Happiness Guide: https://simonacostantini.ck.page/happinesshub  Passion Struck Book: https://passionstruck.com/passion-struck-book/   Connect with Eric https://www.linkedin.com/in/eric-fong-6963237/   Connect with Simona www.instagram.com/simona__costantini  www.instagram.com/costantiniproductions  www.instagram.com/happinesshappenspodcast  https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCXtOxOAuXxW7c5cYKdAEfWg  https://www.facebook.com/costantiniproductions  https://www.facebook.com/happinesshappenspodcast/  www.simonacostantini.com
