Sporting KC had another schizophrenic performance Saturday night at Sporting Park as while Andre Luiz continued showing why the club invested so much in bringing him to the team, and the Wyatt Meyer Effect continued to show it's potential in helping the team achieve results, a far too common refrain of falling apart when things started going bad also came to bear and really had fans searching for answers after shipping 4 goals in 10 minutes and losing a game they never should have.While Philly did put SKC under pressure, their performance after the hour mark was simply not good enough, and was not near the level of execution we saw from this team just a week prior vs LAFC.  We mentioned that it would be irrational to expect everyone to perform at the level they did in that game, but that doesn't mean a capitulation of this magnitude is either expected or acceptable.  The mental softness of this team continues to be a consistent issue, and something that the coach seems unable to remedy.In Potpourri, we will catch up on the other things around MLS this weekend that caught our eye, the Current sleepwalking through a loss in San Diego, and David Lee's favorite topic, GAM.Music by The Spin Wires

Remember just a couple weeks ago, when the Transfer Window was still open, SKC had all of this “flexibility”, and promise of the ability to spend big on designated player transfers?  We had our whole lives ahead of us, and apparently still do, because the flexibility still exists, except we can't use it for 4 months.David Lee met with the meda a little less than 24 hours after we recorded the pod last week and if you took a drink every time he mentioned GAM you'd have had alcohol poisoning within 10 minutes.  He espoused how he was intent on creating flexibility in how the club went about their business over the next 12-18 months and that he wouldn't make rash decisions even with the ability to spend at a level even he hadn't planned for.  So, SKC are left instead to look at a couple loans for teenagers from within the league as the final “signings” of the window, and hope that somehow the business he did complete in some way improves on the field from what it has been to date.In said game on the field, there actually was a marked improvement on what we have largely seen since the WC break, although it was not enough to take home the win.  Sporting KC won the xG battle for the first time since May, and narrowly lost out to FC Dallas on a backbreaking penalty in stoppage time.  While there were certainly some positives to take away, they still shipped 4 goals and continue to struggle defensively even while replacing ¾ of the backline this summer.In Potpourri, we will discuss what we enjoyed in MLS this week along with the somewhat unsurprising departure of Vlatko Andonovski from the Current.  His exit somehow saying a lot more about those in charge of the club he's leaving than him personally.  Finally we look to LAFC coming to Sporting Park on Saturday, and what we can reasonably expect from what is going to be a very tough matchup on paper.

The 21-year-old midfielder/left winger/forward will hopefully help what ails Sporting KC. As soon as he recovers from his ankle injury. SKC have one remaining U22 spot they can fill and it'll be intriguing to see if they spend big again.Then we found out the details around Dejan Joveljic and Manu Garcia's departures. We started this podcast last week espousing how crazy the last several hours had been for this fanbase, and it has not slowed down one bit.  One thing you can be sure of, there are no more bored gifs in the discord being posted lamenting SKC's lack of action.  Now, that doesn't mean there hasn't been action that led to a “not like this” response, but David Lee and Co have been active, and continue to be as the clock ticks down on this summer transfer window.Andre Luiz arrived on Sunday, visa in hand and ready to get to work, and in most cases you'd think that would be the big story of the week!  But no, it was actually 48 hours earlier, when Fabrizio Romano of all people reported that Sporting KC was in negotiations to send leading goalscorer Dejan Joveljic to the Seattle Sounders in a $6M cash trade!  To say that it caught a lot of us off guard would be putting it mildly.  We will dig into the details of this deal and why we think SKC made it, as well as what it means for the next week as the club continues to look to re-tool.There was also a player arrival announced, as Owen Wolff was announced as the club's newest U22 initiative signing, coming from Austin FC in a $4.5M cash for trade that could rise as high as $7.6M if all performance bonuses are met.  Wolff was in the top 5 of MLS' annual 22 under 22 ranking last year, and brings immediate MLS quality to the roster with lots of potential upside.In Potpourri this week Pablo Maurer reported on what appears to be the new MLS playoff structure to go in place at the end of the first fall-spring season, and it mirrors that of a sport you probably wouldn't expect.  The Current continue to give up early leads and have to battle back while having notably poor set piece defense, what we liked in MLS this week as well as a quick preview of Vancouver coming to town this weekend.

For the Glory KC is back with the 192nd episode of the show!Sporting Kansas City have had an incredibly busy week. The last six days has seen the departure of fan favorite and Designated Player, Manu Garcia. The arrival of the fourth most expensive player in MLS history in Andre Luiz. A rumored even more expensive transfer of Nico Fernandez Mercau.But Saturday night may be the biggest news yet. Fabrizio Romano and Tom Bogert are reporting that Dejan Joveljic is moving within the conference to the Seattle Sounders! You'd think it'd be a massive transfer fee, but instead it's only $6 million for one of the best goal scorers in Major League Soccer. Yes, it's a 50 percent profit after only 18 months, but it's a stunner.We go through all the reasons this could be happening and try to make sense of the news. Did Dejan want out? Did he not like how the Manu saga went down this week? Sheena did live sleuthing on the podcast and noticed he'd been absent from their social media all week. When David Lee told us midweek that teams are calling about their players, it seems clear Dejan was always the answer, and he may have already been negotiating at that time.Beyond that, is Dejan just not a system fit for Lee and Rapha Wicky? Or perhaps Lee just wants his guys. The typical starting lineup only has two players that were around more than 11 months ago in Jake Davis and Zorhan Bassong. Is the General Allocation Money (GAM) just too much to pass up?We go through all the permutations. And we talk about what comes next. More Designated Players have to be arriving, right? We also went through all the big points from David Lee's press conference and tried to figure out what DPs Lee could sign. I threw out Cucho Hernandez as a former player who did great in MLS and Sheena went a lot more out of left field with USA-loving Erling Haaland. It's nonsense, but it least it was fun nonsense.Speaking of DPs, we talk about new signing Andre Luiz, the rumored transfer for Nico Fernandez and all the other fallout of the week for Sporting KC. It's weird to record a day before a game, but the news just became too much. Whoo boy have Sporting KC fans been through it over the last 72 hours.  Going through a depressing 2-0 loss in Colorado on Saturday which did not include Manu Garcia in the proceedings, to hearing the coach make nebulous post game statements about his future with the club, to finding out Monday evening at 8pm that he not only was leaving, but that his contract was being terminated and bought out.  Good news though, Andre Luiz was finally announced as an official signing 12 hours later!To say that it left the fanbase a bit confused and with mixed emotions today would be putting it mildly.  Manu was a very well liked player both by the proprietors of this podcast and the fanbase writ large, so to see him leave in what appeared to be a fairly unceremonious manner right before announcing the biggest signing in club history definitely created quite the paradox.We did thankfully hear from David Lee today and he spoke at length about the decision-making that led to these recent transactions as well as the future looking plans and it did help bring some of this into focus.  We will do our best to unpack all of this news and what it means for the club both in the short and long term before previewing the match against St Louis lowercase city tomorrow night at Sporting Park.Music by The Spin Wires

USC Gerontology Professor Dr. Changhan David Lee breaks down the discovery of MOTS-c, a novel mitochondrial-derived peptide that functions as an exercise mimetic, cellular stress responder, and immunomodulator.Are mitochondria more than just cellular powerhouses? They were on the road, for some reason playing a rivalry game midweek, against St. Louis City SC. They fell behind 2-0 before tying it up and giving up a penalty late to lose it.We break down the biggest moments from the game, if there was progress and of course, we have to talk about the questionable officiating. At least games are close enough for the officials to influence for a change?In other Sporting KC news, David Lee gave a press conference last week where he touched on a wide range of subjects. He didn't want to speak about any player specifically (Mo Salah, Andre Luiz, Yann Gboho, etc.). But he did talk about how the budget has changed and they are chasing big fees and big salaries. The team is targeting two to four more signings, including one more defender and the rest being focused in the attack. The World Cup final is set, and do you know what that means?  MLS is Back, baby!  After inundating yourselves with game after game filled with the most talented players on earth, we bring you the only matchup that can satiate your desires for quality football:  Marcel Hartel vs. Wyatt Meyer.  Jokes aside, this dumb league we love so much is back in play in less than 24 hours as we record this podcast, and while I have enjoyed every minute of the World Cup, I am actually excited to get back to business and “take it from here” as it were.Sporting Kansas City remain in the news as the secondary transfer window officially opens and new signings can be registered.  They've already been linked to high priced winger Yann Gboho, but things did not stop there.  They apparently have multiple targets including one Liverpool legend that will have the other member of this podcast duo running straight to the Sporting Style store shouting shut up and take my money for a jersey should that move come to fruition.  It's fun to be part of the hot stove discussion, and new majority owner Peter Mallouk is ensuring that the team has whatever resources necessary to make a splash and improve the talent on the roster.David Lee plus a cadre of folks sat with the media for almost an hour yesterday, the first time since early June that such a forum was made available, and there was a lot to glean from that conversation, and we will do our best to cover all those potential details.In Potpourri, we will discuss those captivating world cup semifinal matches and how they went down, as well as the Kansas City Current's concerning road form continuing(as well as what might be causing it), including some injury and availability issues that could cause results to be harder to attain for the next several weeks.Finally we will preview the beginning of the 2nd half( ⅔'s?) of the season opener vs the scum in scumville.  SKC have signed reinforcements since they last took the field, and it will be fascinating to see how those integrate and if they can raise the competitive floor of the club.

Radiation oncologist and director Roshan Sethi: confidence in medicine is mostly performance. The book club is back, and M2s Anna Royer, Ellie Johnson, and Sofia Hueser, and M4 Alex Nigg all crowd around to grill an actual Hollywood director about his debut novel. Somewhere in Roshan Sethi‘s frontal lobe is a cyst, and it’s possibly why he is a reformed gunner, Hollywood writer/director, still radiation oncologist, and now novelist. Sethi is co-creator of Fox’s The Resident, and author of The Simp: A Novel Without a Hero, a new book built out of a viral job ad so horrifying nobody would claim authorship of it. What does it mean that Raj, the novel’s desperate, self-aware sycophant of a protagonist, reads less like a Hollywood assistant and more like a third-year on rotations? Sethi doesn’t dodge the comparison—he wrote most of Raj’s obliging, invisible, gunner-brained misery straight out of his own decade in medicine. Sethi describes himself, pre-Hollywood, as ruthless enough to publish 15 papers in a single year for a career he’s since walked mostly away from–he still practices 9 weeks a year–and he does the math on what staying in medicine actually cost him: when The Resident got greenlit for a sixth season and syndication, he’d already turned the show down to finish residency, a decision one producer later priced at $12 million. Sethi traces a lot of that old ambition back to being closeted through college and medical school; the striving, he says, was never really about medicine, and coming out took most of the edge off it. Also, what happens to a person’s personality over four years of medical school? Sethi’s answer: it gets slowly closeted right along with everything else, trained out of you until invisibility reads as professionalism. He tells the room the worst response to getting pimped isn’t “I don’t know”—it’s saying it apologetically, like you owe someone an explanation for not yet knowing something nobody expects you to know. Speaking of things that require confidence you don’t actually have: Sethi’s next film, The Surgeon, stars Michelle Yeoh as a retired surgeon taken hostage and forced to operate. Dave can’t wait. He even pitched Sethi on his own idea for a movie that’s not at all derivative, and though it will probably star Mark Ruffalo, Dave is available. On representation, Sethi draws a sharp line between his two industries. Medicine has become more female and more Indian, Asian, and Nigerian over time precisely because it runs on an objective, if imperfect, filter that values whoever scores highest on the MCAT. Hollywood, by his account, has no equivalent filter: roughly 90 percent of the highest-grossing films are still directed by men; minorities in the industry get treated as diversity projects rather than talent, and there’s nothing resembling medicine’s blunt, if flawed, meritocracy. For the Glory KC is back with the 181st episode of the show!Before we got to the regularly scheduled podcast content, we had to talk about the KC Soccer Journal's collab with the Olathe Indian Creek Library. That also led into Sheena's impromptu review of Nate Bukaty's new book, "Perfect Pitch" about Kansas City bidding and getting the World Cup in 2026. Nate will be a guest on a future For the Glory KC!But before then, back to our regularly scheduled content.Sporting Kansas City aren't playing matches since it's the World Cup break, but that doesn't mean there wasn't news. David Lee made waves with rumors of "four to seven, starter-level" additions being his goal for the secondary transfer window. Not only did Lee weigh in, but new majority owner Peter Mallouk chimed in as well.We talk about our thoughts on their statements then where the additions should be made. According to reports, Lee said three defenders, three attackers and a midfielder. I tried to get specific with my needs and pushed my co-host to do the same. There are so many possibilities, despite the uptick in results recently. Sporting KC are still only one spot up from the bottom of the whole league, so almost no position is safe.Beyond the roster, there was plenty of international call-up news, including the unfortunate news that no Sporting KC players made a World Cup roster. Also, SKC II won again, in a wild one against the Real Monarchs.The KC Current did play soccer this week and gutted out at 1-0 win over expansion side Boston Legacy FC. It wasn't always pretty and it was downright violent, but Kansas City found a way. Not without some injuries along the way. The feedback loop that would make doctors better diagnosticians doesn’t exist. Louise walked five minutes. Then her legs turned to stone. She stood at the side of the road, waiting for them to work again—and nobody figured out why for thirty years. Author and New York Times Health and Science Opinion Editor Alexandra Sifferlin has spent years as a journalist fielding emails from patients who couldn’t get a straight answer from medicine—not because their doctors were incompetent, but because diagnosis is harder, messier, and more difficult to do in 15 minutes than anyone wants to admit. Her book The Elusive Body: Patients, Doctors, and the Diagnosis Crisis traces the problem from rural Kentucky to the NIH’s Undiagnosed Diseases Network, and her conversation with M4 Jeff Goddard, M1 Madelyn Klemmensen, and M2 Zach Goddard goes deep on the mechanics of how diagnostic errors actually happen: availability bias, the missing feedback loop, specialty tunnel vision, and the slow erosion of trust that pushes patients toward people selling them supplements. The students here aren’t just asking sympathetic questions, although Jeff is literally a character in the book, something Dave found out in real time on this episode. They push on the hard stuff: when is a placeholder diagnosis ethical, whether AI will save us or become a crutch, and what do you actually do about a healthcare system where the patient bounces between docs who don’t have answers. What they keep landing on is uncomfortable—medicine doesn’t have great solutions to this, but the relationship between patient and physician might matter more than the technology of medicine. How Away Rotations play into getting that dream residency Among all the strange things about medical school, there’s the so-called “away” or “audition” rotation. Recently matched M4s Aditi Katwala, Hend Al-Kaylani, Lena Volfson, and Kristin Davis talk about what it’s like to leave CCOM for weeks at a time to visit another hospital. Maybe they want to experience some new things there they wouldn’t have seen at Iowa. But also, it’s often about showing off their med-student skills for a residency program they might match with in another part of the country. Spoiler–that’s not exactly how it worked out for them, but they learned a whole lot and ultimately that’s the point.
