Part 4 of our Discipleship Series. The previous sermon in this series looked at how we can be with Jesus through abiding in the vine. This message moves on to thinking about how we can become like Jesus, and it does so by considering a series of short parables and illustrations that Jesus taught in Luke's gospel.

Part 2 of our Discipleship Series.We look at Jesus' invitation Mark 8:34 “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me." Jesus never demands faithfulness but invites us to follow Him. To live in His resurrection life we have to walk in His ways and receive His truth.

October 6, 2024 Matthew 28:18-20 18 And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19 Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”

September 29, 2024 Colossians 3:1-4 1 If then you have been raised with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. 2 Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth. 3 For you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. 4 When Christ who is your life appears, then you also will appear with him in glory.

September 22, 2024 John 17:6-10 6 “I have manifested your name to the people whom you gave me out of the world. Yours they were, and you gave them to me, and they have kept your word. 7 Now they know that everything that you have given me is from you. 8 For I have given them the words that you gave me, and they have received them and have come to know in truth that I came from you; and they have believed that you sent me. 9 I am praying for them. I am not praying for the world but for those whom you have given me, for they are yours. 10 All mine are yours, and yours are mine, and I am glorified in them. Romans 12:3-5 3 For by the grace given to me I say to everyone among you not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think, but to think with sober judgment, each according to the measure of faith that God has assigned. 4 For as in one body we have many members, and the members do not all have the same function, 5 so we, though many, are one body in Christ, and individually members one of another.

September 15, 2024 John 15:1-8 1 “I am the true vine, and my Father is the vinedresser. 2 Every branch in me that does not bear fruit he takes away, and every branch that does bear fruit he prunes, that it may bear more fruit. 3 Already you are clean because of the word that I have spoken to you. 4 Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in me. 5 I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing. 6 If anyone does not abide in me he is thrown away like a branch and withers; and the branches are gathered, thrown into the fire, and burned. 7 If you abide in me, and my words abide in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you. 8 By this my Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit and so prove to be my disciples. Romans 12:1-2 1 I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship. 2 Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.

September 8, 2024 Luke 10:1-12 1 After this the Lord appointed seventy-two others and sent them on ahead of him, two by two, into every town and place where he himself was about to go. 2 And he said to them, “The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few. Therefore pray earnestly to the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest. 3 Go your way; behold, I am sending you out as lambs in the midst of wolves. 4 Carry no moneybag, no knapsack, no sandals, and greet no one on the road. 5 Whatever house you enter, first say, ‘Peace be to this house!' 6 And if a son of peace is there, your peace will rest upon him. But if not, it will return to you. 7 And remain in the same house, eating and drinking what they provide, for the laborer deserves his wages. Do not go from house to house. 8 Whenever you enter a town and they receive you, eat what is set before you. 9 Heal the sick in it and say to them, ‘The kingdom of God has come near to you.' 10 But whenever you enter a town and they do not receive you, go into its streets and say, 11 ‘Even the dust of your town that clings to our feet we wipe off against you. Nevertheless know this, that the kingdom of God has come near.' 12 I tell you, it will be more bearable on that day for Sodom than for that town.

But as for you, go and proclaim the kingdom of God.” 61 Yet another said, “I will follow you, Lord, but let me first say farewell to those at my home.” 62 Jesus said to him, “No one who puts his hand to the plow and looks back is fit for the kingdom of God.”

August 18, 2024 Mark 2:13-17 13 He went out again beside the sea, and all the crowd was coming to him, and he was teaching them. 14 And as he passed by, he saw Levi the son of Alphaeus sitting at the tax booth, and he said to him, “Follow me.” And he rose and followed him. 15 And as he reclined at table in his house, many tax collectors and sinners were reclining with Jesus and his disciples, for there were many who followed him. 16 And the scribes of the Pharisees, when they saw that he was eating with sinners and tax collectors, said to his disciples, “Why does he eat with tax collectors and sinners?” 17 And when Jesus heard it, he said to them, “Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick. I came not to call the righteous, but sinners.”

August 11, 2024 Mark 1:16-20 16 Passing alongside the Sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and Andrew the brother of Simon casting a net into the sea, for they were fishermen. 17 And Jesus said to them, “Follow me, and I will make you become fishers of men.” 18 And immediately they left their nets and followed him. 19 And going on a little farther, he saw James the son of Zebedee and John his brother, who were in their boat mending the nets. 20 And immediately he called them, and they left their father Zebedee in the boat with the hired servants and followed him.

A disciple of Jesus is a person who follows and learns from Jesus, seeking to model their life after His teachings and example of life. The word "disciple" (Greek: μαθητής, mathetes) means "learner" or "student"- to become disciplined by Jesus' example!  Jesus' disciples were those who left their previous lives behind to go in His name, all the while listening to His teachings, and helping to spread His message. Today, we are His disciples by studying His teachings, following His example, and sharing His gospel with others. Basically to be a disciple of Jesus means to make Him the center of your life and strive to live according to His will, even when it's not easy or even popular. With that being said,  let's remind ourselves  what Jesus taught us to do just before He ascended! Amen.Ok, that is enough of the review, let's read this morning's text please.*Luke 23:46 (KJV) And when Jesus had cried with a loud voice, he said, Father, into thy hands I COMMEND (COMMITTED) my spirit: and having said thus, he gave up the ghost.*See *Hebrews 10:18-20 (KJV)Jesus is “Fully COMMITTED” to you, no worries, now let's rest in that truth and be “Fully COMMITTED” to Him! Keep this question in your mind this morning: “What does it mean to be a follower of Jesus - a disciple?” We must understand that we live in a culture of instant gratification and comfort! In this lifetime in this world everyone has to make choices and become “Fully COMMITTED”!  Those decisions always cost you something. For Instance, you can make more money by working harder and longer hours but at the expense of family time or personal time! In our walk with the Lord we must understand it requires the same dedication!  With that being said we need to help each person understand they must learn to be “Fully COMMITTED”! The costs of following Jesus are highlighted in 3 areas. The Gospel message is very clear. We were lost and undone but God loved us enough to send His Son to die for our sin so we could be forgiven and more! We could become born-again, having everlasting life in the family of God!  Turn with me to the Epistle of 1 John chapter 1 please:*1 John 1:9 (KJV) If WE confess our sins, HE is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.Note “forgive” = to send away from us!Note “cleanse” = to purge and purifyQ. Cleansed by how much?A. From “all unrighteousness” = all legal injustice including being morally wrong!Praise the Lord for His Grace to be forgiSupport the Show.
