We're back with part 2 of our episode with guest Neil Armstrong. We recorded so much content with Neil that we had to cut out some just to get it down to 3 hours. Luckily, we had enough to make a whole other episode almost entirely about his time with Jay-Z. We get into how Neil got the opportunity, some tour life stories, what are some things Jay does that no one knows about, and other tidbits from this time in his life. Thanks to Neil for all the time he gave us and the amount of gems dropped! You can find out more about Neil and his own career on the part 1 of this episode. Make sure to get all of this info!!
Super long episode this week! Neil Armstrong is a dj and member of the renowned 5th Platoon turntablism crew. He is also a producer, a global ambassador for Adidas, an event organizer, a former tour DJ for Jay-Z, and most recently a newish resident of Tokyo. We caught up with Neil to talk about growing up in NY, getting his name from Fat Beats, being taught the art of turntablism by Mista Sinista and Total Eclipse of the X-men, battling in the highly competitive turntablist scene of the 90s and early 00's, touring with Jay-Z, his Filipino roots and his thoughts on the current state of turntablism. This episode is very long. We actually recorded about 5 hours with Neil and decided to cut out the finer details of his time spent touring with Jay. well release that sometime soon. Follow Neil on everything and check out his music everywhere.
On Part 2 of The Library's interview with DJ Neil Armstrong, Tim and DJ Neil Armstrong discuss their favorite Jay-Z tracks. When Michael Jackson and R. Kelly come up they talk about the issues surrounding how one can or cannot separate the "artist" from the "person." Armstrong also talks about challenging personal convictions while fulfilling his role as a DJ, connection between food and music. We also talk about hip hop's relationship with musical legend Stevie Wonder and the future of the New York Knicks. Armstrong discussed all this and much more while making sure he leaves in time to pick up his daughter from daycare Learn more about your ad-choices at https://www.iheartpodcastnetwork.com
This week on The Library with Tim Einenkel, Jay Z's former tour DJ, DJ Neil Armstrong. In Part 1 of the interview the Queens, New York native begins by explaining why he needs three phones to play Pokémon Go and then we get into DJ Armstrong's history in Hip Hop. Armstrong talks about first hearing Newcleus' Jam on It played on New York City radio as a kid. He covers his years going to church as a child and the many early hip hop legends that played a part in his education. Armstrong remembers a time when radio and MTV refused to play rap, a time when Fat Beats ruled, and DJs actually had battles to decide who was supreme. The 5th Platoon member talks about touring with Jay Z and what songs make a DJs set daring. Learn more about your ad-choices at https://www.iheartpodcastnetwork.com

Jay-Z and Beyoncé just released the "Everything is Love" album on Tidal this week and I made a last minute switch on this episode and pulled up a 2012 interview with the All Out King of the turntables, DJ Neil Armstrong. Neil toured with Jay-Z through some amazing times in Hov's career, from marrying Beyonce to headlining Glastonbury and rocking the VMA's with that epic "Empire State of Mind" performance with Alicia Keys. We talk about how Neil's authentic musicality, expressed in his legendary mixtapes, led him to a face-to-face meeting with Jay Z, separated only by a set of turntables. This high pressure performance led to Neil seeing the world, performing to millions of fans and a special performance for President Obama at The White House. We also speak on Kanye West's antics, (well before the recent Donald Trump stuff) when he interrupted Taylor Swift at the VMA, and how Jay Z runs his team and addresses moments like that. This podcast has a lot of jewels in it so make sure you enjoy it and take notes - there's a lot of stuff we talk about in the post-game part of the podcast that you can apply to your everyday hustle.
Today’s guest on the show is DJ Neil Armstrong. I’ve been listening to Neil’s mixes for well over 10 years now and I can honestly say I was pretty hype when he accepted my invite to appear on the show. In this episode we have a super in-depth conversation about paying dues, how to sustain longevity in the entertainment business, his dog Poh, universal languages, his various experiences as a tour DJ for Jay Z, Neil’s Dinner & A Mixtape series plus much much more. Just a heads up, we recorded this in a pretty quiet room. And a bunch of little kids showed up with their moms and all of a sudden it got live. It got loud, but Neil and I never stopped. We were knee deep into the conversation and at that point it didn’t make sense to move. You can still hear us really clearly but the party in the background does get a bit distracting at times, I apologize in advance. With that said, please enjoy.
Today’s guest on the show is Jeff Staple, Founder and Creative Director of Staple Design and Reed Space.
