“It’s a long time comin.” Blessing our podcast for the first time since 2017, Paterson, New Jersey native Lay Lay revisits our lab to discuss her life as a performer, model, influencer, and most importantly - being a mother. Cut from the most special cloth, Lay Lay began performing as young as two years old, and made her way to the airwaves of New York City at the ripe age of four. From the start, Lay Lay knew she was different than her peers. Throughout her adolescence, she won trophies at Black music expos and reveled in her energy dancing and singing with her mother in their home. Her many years of experience grew her confidence beyond performing and entertaining; it is now something that flows through her veins in everything that she does. Despite any pressure throughout her adolescence, Lay Lay has stayed determined to continue on the right path. Even with unexpected blessings such as being a teenage mother, she remained focused and knew that she was destined for greatness. The trophy of her determination is her self-owned dance company, “Slay 12”, that she built from the bottom up. Before anything else, her daughter remains number one in her life and serves as a big inspiration for a future generation where other people’s opinions don’t dictate the capacity of one’s dreams. From the words of her daughter, “she’s the goat.” Enjoy. www.sqrpodcast.com www.facebook.com/sqrpodcast https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCN2YWGURe_tTvQLiUDcuDGA https://www.instagram.com/sqrpodcast/
“I was open to it with no expectation,” states Kimberly Copeland, A.K.A. Reverend Yogi, as she explains her passion for yoga. An ordained Reverend and Hatha (Vinyasa) Yoga teacher, Copeland describes the mantras she lives by and how she’s applied them to her great tragedies and triumphs in her life’s journey. Born in Cleveland, Ohio, she is the eldest of three siblings (and the only daughter) of two hardworking middle-class parents who established the following family motto: “Each generation would introduce its successor to a higher plane of living.” Carrying the weight of this knowledge throughout her adolescence, she admits there was a season of rebellion during which she battled identity issues; what it meant to be a black girl, and how she fought to find herself amongst a field of people who were different than her. Copeland also shares the most intimate moments that define her life; such as reciting Maya Angelou’s “Phenomenal Woman” to her mother, and the journey of healing after losing a loved one. Putting all of her faith in God, she explains how He has allowed her to heal by teaching Yoga and incorporating scripture. Described by Squirrel as “transparent, vulnerable, and real,” Copeland’s journey inspires and shows what it is like to be human. We hope you enjoy her story. “Pretending was too much work”, as expressed by interdisciplinary artist Nyugen Smith, a hybrid of both Haitian and Trinidadian blood. He graced SQR Podcast with transparency as he delved into his upbringing in Trinidad; including his cultural adjustment after moving back to America during his most formative years, how art chose him, and the visual and physical influences he attributes toward embracing his own aesthetics. Coming from a broken family in Trinidad to attend a boarding school in Pennsylvania, he desperately tried to fit in. This even included trying to lose his innate accent. Realizing it was easier to be himself, he eventually found acceptance in college via a group of Haitians- an ancestry he was far disconnected from (an emotion better heard and felt at the end of the podcast in his spoken word). Smith, a scholar with straight A’s and B’s as a Political Science major, had his schoolwork all mapped out; until he took two pivotal art classes to fill up his electives. Those two classes flipped his world upside down. Art became his language. Soon after, he was invested in rapping, theater, painting and sculpture, and his evolution since has been anything but dull. From traveling to study art in Florence, Italy, to selling his art to college administrators and eventually hosting his own art show, Smith says it’s all about his support system. Without support from peers, friends, and family, he claims he would be nowhere. His whole life story is wrapped into this podcast, as he leaves us with the biggest jewel on this episode: “For those who are struggling to find themselves, and to find that thing in life that makes you want to get up every day, I wish they find that thing because there’s nothing like it.” With his work currently on display at Perez Art Museum, and being part of The Other Side of Now: Foresight in Contemporary Caribbean Art, this is just the tip of the iceberg for Nuygen Smith. We hope you appreciate his narrative as much as we did. Enjoy.

Born Shani-Love Dishmen, her parents were playing rap to her since her embryonic days in the womb. Shani created a hybrid of her legal name and the influence of Fetty Wap’s Remy Boys, to become Remy Girl Ni. Ni’s parents have been a great influence on her life to motivate and inspire her to develop her talents while prioritizing school as well. As a confident, focused, ten year old, Ni is prepared for the social changes that seem to be a fact in the middle school dynamic. Jealousy may occur and some friends are already asking her not to change. Already experiencing this, she’s ready for whatever middle school challenges may bring and friends she may lose and gain based solely on her fame. Affiliated with RGF Island, Ni is signed with the same label as Fetty Wap, and she represents Remy girls and Remy Boys. After making the song “Remy Girl Gang”, she credits 2Gs for bringing her into the RGF circle. Remy Girl Ni has two singles,"We Litty" & "Remy Girl Gang" which are out right now on iTunes, Spotify, and Amazon. She has already expressed an interest in possibly developing a tv show concept of her own, which she intends on negotiating with Nickelodeon and Disney, while also seeking sponsorship opportunities. East meets West. Listen as singer, writer and performer China Marie, a Portland Oregon native chops it up with Squirrel Rosenberg at SQR Pro Studio in Paterson NJ. The product of inter-racial parents who divorced at an early age, China was raised by her mother and influenced by her grandmother, as her dad battle with a severe cocaine habit. She recalls the honesty of her mother, who admitted her sexuality, and the effect it had on her and her brother. Her journey through elementary and middle school was plagued with bullying, being the only biracial child in a predominantly black school district. However, this all changed once puberty hit in high school- when girls envied what she had and guys appreciated it. A lack of focus on her grades led China to accumulate a 1.8 GPA and a visit to school by her mom. A stern warning and determination to step up her game resulted in a remarkable 4.1 GPA upon graduation. “I just want to be a star,” the catalyst for China’s move from her safe and secure life in Portland to the unknown territory and possibilities that awaited her in Los Angeles, California. Enjoy China Marie’s vivid recap of her journey to Compton (corner of Watts and Alameda) to the perfect room for rent in a stash house. It was not long before her instincts led her to Manhattan Beach, where she lived in her Mercury Sable for three weeks in a middle school parking lot. An experience she kept from her mom, as she was unwilling to return to Portland and follow the status quo. Eventually, China found a place and a steady flow of income. Listen as she shares her introduction into the music industry via a video shoot for rapper Too Short, whom she met and impressed. Contrary to the conventional route, China created her own path to get her music and talent out there. Her fly on the wall moment shooting the video for her single ‘Policy’ featuring Ray Jay confirms she was on the right path. A trip to New York City came about once China realized the music scene in L.A. was more conducive to established artists. China fell in love with the city that never sleeps and was embraced by all. https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCN2YWGURe_tTvQLiUDcuDGA www.facebook.com/sqrpodcast www.sqrpodcast.com
"I was too scared to quit". Among the many jewels dropped by super human/super ninja Joey K, as he honors SQR Podcast with one of our most fascinating stories yet. Listen as this only child who grew up a little shy, sheltered and even spoiled to parents who divorced at age 6. Spending time between mom and dad, Joey was able to enjoy all the fun and freedom from dad, however mom kept him in line with discipline, living clean and eating clean with a strong vegetarian diet. A transient early childhood included a move to Boston as mom remarried. Influenced by his grandmother in putting others first, lead to him making a decision to move back to live with his father and step mother in New Jersey. A ready-made household with a 10-year-old brother and 13-year-old sister; total chaos. A skinny kid with crappy grades and no athletic capabilities graduated high school, and with a seed planted by his uncle John, inspired him to join the navy; seal team that is; as the team work was appealing to him. Mom resisted. ("Give us your heart, we will take care of your body.") The mantra that fueled Joey K through the rigorous training to be a part of this elite BUDS team. Enjoy as joey shares his intimate experiences, wins and failures through the entire process of hell week and how it has allowed him to tackle all obstacle courses-physically and mentally-in life. Excerpts that could be applied to our life's journey, Joey shares of his transition back to civilian life. The self-destructive habits formed and his 'a-ha' moment, August 2016, looking at the Men's Health Magazine in Walgreen's. The dedication, drive and constant need to raise the ceiling are the main ingredients to SQR's conversation with Joey K. Enjoy this riveting and concise journey through the life of F.E.D.S. founder and owner Antoine Clark. Antoine held nothing as he shares of growing up in a single parent home where mom played the role of dad, best friend and a strong disciplinarian. Babysitting his brother, Antoine passionately embraced his big brother role and took his brother wherever he went and do whatever he did. A very focused and driven young man, Antoine was never distracted by the drug infested surroundings he grew up in. Women were his distraction, this led him to becoming a dad while in high school and welcomed the birth of his daughter. Antoine speaks eloquently of that time and the emotions felt by both him and his girlfriend as they both were still in high school and now parents. This experience transformed him into a man, as he did not want to neglect his role nor his daughter unlike his experience with his dad neglecting him. Unable to complete high school due to his responsibility, Antoine goes right to work to provide for his family. Inspired by Larry Flint, Antoine shares about the birth F.E.D.S. The name which came to him as he wrapped up a meeting in the village (NYC) at a restaurant called FEZ. F.E.D.S. magazine became the bible of the streets. Overcoming all the issues from publishing to distribution Antoine did it so he could tell the story of gangsters like Alpo, Rich Porter, Pistol Pete and Santra Rucker to name a few. Great content and connecting with the right people allowed Antoine Clark to tell the story of the street, not to glorify it but to deter others from making the same mistakes. https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCN2YWGURe_tTvQLiUDcuDGA www.facebook.com/sqrpodcast www.sqrpodcast.com
