Crossing Faiths

In this episode of Crossing Faiths, Rabbi Aaron Zimmer and Rabbi Eli Feder discuss their endeavor to explore the relationship between science and religion, specifically focusing on using physics to argue for the existence of God. Motivated by a desire to reconcile modern scientific understanding with religious belief, they challenge the notion that science and faith are incompatible. The rabbis introduce the concept of "fine-tuning" in physics, arguing that the precise mathematical constants governing the universe suggest an intelligent designer rather than random chance. They critically examine the multiverse theory as an alternative explanation, presenting it as a less plausible scientific hypothesis. Drawing on their backgrounds in Talmudic study and scientific research, Zimmer and Feder aim to provide a rigorous, accessible argument for God's existence by demonstrating the improbability of our universe's precise conditions arising by accident. Their approach combines deep scientific analysis with the ability to communicate complex ideas in understandable terms, ultimately seeking to offer people a rational framework for understanding faith in the modern world. Elie Feder earned a PhD in mathematics from the CUNY Graduate Center and received Rabbinic ordination from his rebbe, Rabbi Yisrael Chait. Since 2004, Elie has been a mathematics professor at Kingsborough Community College and a maggid shiur at Yeshiva Bnei Torah. He has published many papers and delivered numerous talks on graph theory, which is his field of mathematical research. As a teacher, Elie has a passion for simplifying complex topics for his students. Recently, he authored a book “Gematria Refigured,” which presents a rational, nonmystical approach to gematria as a tool of uncovering the significance of quantity and fine tuning in Torah, life, and the universe. Elie hosts the Gematria Refigured+ and the Physics to God podcasts. He resides in Far Rockaway, New York, with his wife and their four children. After earning a physics degree and receiving rabbinical ordination from his rebbe, Rabbi Yisrael Chait, Aaron Zimmer considered furthering his education through graduate school. However, his intellectual curiosity extended far beyond the realm of physics, encompassing a diverse array of fields, including philosophy, mathematics, and psychology. Capitalizing on his blend of analytical and philosophical skills, Aaron utilized his personal resources to venture into commodity futures trading. This endeavor involved commodities such as oil, natural gas, cotton, sugar, and coffee. His strategic approach was deeply rooted in the conceptual frameworks of physics and the intricate Brisker Method for Talmudic analysis. After an eleven-year career marked by success in commodity trading, Aaron decided to retire. In his retirement, Aaron channels his intellectual energy into studying various branches of knowledge, including the Talmud, philosophy, and physics. He co-hosts the Physics to God podcast and resides in Lawrence, New York, along with his wife and their five children. Hi everyone! Welcome back to another episode of The Chai on Life Podcast. I'm Alex Segal and today, we are speaking with Yaffa Moskowitz, the Director of Education at Midreshet Rachel V'Chaya, a seminary in Jerusalem. Here's a little more about Yaffa: She is a native member the Far Rockaway community and was active in that community and the Five Towns for many years. Yaffa, her husband Danny, and seven children made aliya in the summer of 2013 and now live in Mitzpe Yericho. Yaffa served as teacher and Director of Ateres Seminary for women on the Queens College Campus for 13 years and she was also involved in the Neshei Shor Yoshuv community where she gave chaburas for married women.I met Yaffa when I was a student exactly seven years ago at Midreshet Rachel and have continued to learn from her and with her since. She has such a wealth of knowledge and this conversation really turned into the perfect thing to listen to right in the middle of Elul preparing for the chagim.During this time at Midreshet Rachel, the students learn from the sefer, Tomer Devorah, which teaches us about Hashem's 13 Attributes of Mercy. As we learn about Hashem and understand who He is more, so to speak, we learn how we can emulate Him more in our own lives, and we used that text as the jumping off point for our conversation. As we spoke, we explored:-What a “sin” actually is in Judaism (it may not be what you think) and how we can always get back on track-How to separate ourselves from the sin and retain our confidence and closeness to G-d through the process-How we can get to the core of what emunah really is on the most basic level and use these foundational concepts to connect to Hashem more deeply-The restraint Hashem has with us every day and how we can apply that concept to our own lives and actions-How to work on letting go of control-Why we should speak to ourselves with more compassion from a Torah perspective-When fear is appropriate in Judaism and what kind of fear that actually is talking about-How we can continue to grow and elevate ourselves year after year…and SO MUCH MORE!To learn more about Midreshet Rachel V'Chaya, click here.Special thank you to Tania Friedlander, our first podcast partner! In Episode 266, I converse with Rabbi Elie Feder PhD and Rabbi Aaron Zimmer, Hosts of Physics to God. Rabbi Elie Feder earned a PhD in mathematics from the CUNY Graduate Center and received Rabbinic ordination from Rabbi Yisrael Chait. Since 2004, Elie has been a mathematics professor at Kingsborough Community College. He has published many papers and delivered numerous talks in graph theory, which is his field of mathematical research. As a teacher, Elie has a passion for simplifying complex topics for his students. Recently, he authored a book "Gematria Refigured," which presents a rational, nonmystical approach to gematria as a tool of uncovering the significance of quantity and fine tuning in Torah, life, and the universe. Elie resides in Far Rockaway, New York, with his wife and their four children. After earning a physics degree and receiving rabbinical ordination from Rabbi Yisrael Chait, Rabbi Aaron Zimmer considered furthering his education through graduate school. His strategic approach was deeply rooted in the conceptual frameworks of physics and the Brisker Method for Talmudic analysis. After an eleven-year career marked by success in commodity trading, Aaron decided to retire. In his retirement, Aaron channels his intellectual energy into studying various branches of knowledge, including the Talmud and physics. He resides in Lawrence, New York, along with his wife and their five children. We speak about analysis in chess, commodities trading and physics, Talmud, some insights from our 162nd Podcast Guest Rabbi Mark Wildes, Founder of Manhattan Jewish Experience, depth of knowledge, the torah way of life, the interesection of god and science, Richard Feyman's analogy of chess and the laws of physics, chess history, Plunder Chess, the universe and more.Thank you to our 45th Podcast Guest Zev Gotkin, Founder of Zev Media, for recently introducing me to Rabbi Feder and Rabbi Zimmer and allowing this episode to happen.

Trump Calls For Return To ‘Law And Order' At Wake For Slain NYPD Officer Jonathan Diller

Real News Now Podcast

President Trump extended heartfelt sympathy to the loved ones of a tragically fallen member of the police force, advocating for a strong reinstatement of peace and order. This sentiment was conveyed during a visit on a somber Thursday to a wake for Officer Jonathan Diller of the NYPD. During the poignant visit, the former President made it a point to personally connect with those who held a close relationship with Officer Diller. Among those he consoled were the newly widowed wife and the child, just one year old, now left without a father. Officer Diller's life was prematurely ended in the line of duty on a Monday when a routine traffic stop in Far Rockaway, Queens turned deadly. The grave reality that the Diller household will never resemble its former state of normalcy was a fact noted with great regret. His words carried an unmistakable urgency. 'It's a cycle that needs to be disrupted, that must end. We need to return to a society framed around law and order. The approach needs to be reconsidered because it's evident that the current system isn't hitting the mark. This kind of tragedy is becoming a regular occurrence.' The individual accused of the appalling crime of taking Officer Diller's life, Guy Rivera, a Queens resident, was noted to have a worrying history of brushes with the law. Prior to the deadly confrontation, this 34-year-old man had been detained on 21 separate occasions. Rivera now faces serious charges related directly to the Monday shooting. He is currently under arrest for first-degree murder and attempted murder. Details of the incident outline a chilling scene. Rivera was sitting in the passenger seat of a stationary vehicle when Officer Diller persistently urged him to exit. Rivera shockingly dismissed the police officer's command, drew a firearm, and fired a deadly shot at Diller. A horrifying detail emerged that the fatal bullet had struck the officer just beneath his protective vest. The horrifying news was reported from legal entities. Adding to the chaos of the situation, Diller's partner, Veckash Khedna, retaliated by firing at Rivera. In the aftermath, both Diller and Rivera were rushed to the same medical facility, Jamaica Hospital. Officer Diller tragically succumbed to his injuries, whereas Rivera is currently under medical supervision while in custody. The incident sparked reactions from political figures as well. Mayor Eric Adams held a press address on the Tuesday following the tragic event, acknowledging that the city is grappling with repeat offenses by individuals demonstrating dangerous behavior. Mayor Adams also voiced a pressing sentiment that echoes across the city. He said, 'Dangerous individuals inflicting harm on the law-abiding members of our community pose a significant issue. There is a stark contrast between those who abide by the principles of community and those who seek to terrorize it.' Overall, the chilling incident shines focus on the precarious conditions under which the members of law enforcement carry out their duties. Instances like these question the effectiveness of existing policies in deterring repeat offenders. While expressing grief over a singular event, it also triggers a broader conversation around law and order and the urgent need to reassess strategies to prevent such incidents from recurring, lest more lives be lost in the future. Another important facet recognizes the service and sacrifice made by those who dutifully step up to protect and serve the community. Their roles take on a significant weight when they face such dangerous situations, reinforcing the daunting reality of their profession. Officer Diller's loss casts a shadow on the community, opening up the discourse around our approach to law enforcement and giving rise to vital discussions on improving safety for both, the law enforcers and the community they've sworn to protect. Barstool Sports Founder Dave Portnoy Raises $1.5 Million for Officer Diller's Family

Dave Portnoy, the visionary behind Barstool Sports, recently came forward with an astonishing declaration. He was able to accumulate $1.5 million in aid of the late NYPD officer, Jonathan Diller's family. Portnoy pledged beforehand to match the funds that would be donated. 'With the combined efforts of all those who generously donated, we amassed 750k. With the matching fund, this sums to 1.5 million that goes straight to the family,' Portnoy exclaimed on X. Earlier, Portnoy affirmed his decision to 'correspond with whatever our total fundraising is up until midnight today.' Jonathan Diller, the young law enforcement officer, sadly lost his life at the early age of 31 in a traffic stop gone awry in Queens that erupted into a despicable gunfight with the notorious criminal, Guy Rivera, aged 34, on a dreadful Monday night. Whilst addressing the disastrous event, Dave Portnoy stated during a video he shared on X and TikTok, 'I trust that everyone's come across the sorrowful news. It's downright horrific, The NYPD officer, Jonathan Diller who met an unfortunate fate.' He encouraged his followers to make a charitable contribution to the cause. Details about the unfortunate incident unraveled further when Portnoy added, 'Routine traffic check, two men were pulled over, individuals with a history of being in and out of the correctional system uncountable times, just started a gunfight causing this disaster.' The events unfolded caused great grief and lead to the loss of not just an officer, but a father and a spouse. Portnoy, displaying sincere compassion and speaking of the aftermath, shared 'It's heart-wrenching. His departure leaves behind a wife and a one-year-old child. We managed to secure around $240,000 directly for the family by selling T-shirts. Every cent made from this will be given to the family.' Assistance for Officer Jonathan Diller's infant son can be provided through the Silver Shield Foundation, set up to assist in funding his forthcoming education. Diller's untimely demise during the traffic check in Queens left his wife, Stephanie, and infant, Ryan, in a state of unimaginable loss. The Silver Shield Foundation was brought into existence in 1982 by the well-remembered late owner of the New York Yankees, George Steinbrenner. It was designed to aid the families of NYPD officers and FDNY firefighters who tragically lose their lives in the line of duty. Anyone seeking to make a contribution can visit silvershieldfoundation.org/donate or mail it directly to: Silver Shield Foundation, 870 UN Plaza, 1st Floor, New York, NY 10017. Further showing his dedication, Portnoy added to the cause, 'At the end of the day today, anything we raise, anything we make, I will personally match, thus doubling the funds we can gather' underscored his genuine commitment in aiding the bereaved family. After all, what is more noble than helping those who suffer the loss of a loved one in the line of duty? Portnoy, ever sincere and empathetic, added, 'I acknowledge that no amount of money can bring back what's lost or remedy the situation. There's no way to truly cure this but doing the least we can is to contribute financially. We, at Barstool and myself, have a longstanding history of supporting law enforcement officers, the men in blue, and first responders. Speaking about the grave circumstances under which law enforcement operate, Portnoy passionately stated, 'It's truly heartbreaking. They risk their lives every day, serving us. It's simply tragic. We stand ready to do whatever we can in support.' As you may be asking, what transpired on that fateful day with Officer Jonathan Diller? The young 31-year-old officer was shot during a standard traffic stop in Far Rockaway, Queens, on the 25th of March, 2024. The suspect, Guy Rivera, a dangerous criminal, attacked Officer Diller on that unfortunate Monday evening. This engagement started when Diller approached the vehicle Rivera was occupying due to a parking violation in front of a bus stop. The assailant shot Diller in the abdomen, just below his bulletproof vest. Father of a one-year-old boy and a devoted husband, Diller was immediately transported to Jamaica Hospital, where he was later marked deceased. Diller's partner managed to retaliate, injuring Rivera in the process. Rivera, a man with an appalling 21 counts of prior arrests, was later found with a homemade weapon concealed in his rectum, making evident his anticipation of a likely jail sentence. Aiding the suspect in the vehicle was Lindy Jones, an ex-convict who was also arrested after authorities found another firearm in his car. Post the event, Mayor Eric Adams called for renewed efforts from Albany to tackle the issue of criminal recidivism particularly spotlighting scenarios which involve criminals harboring lengthy records. In this tragic incident, Diller's partner was reported to have discharged two rounds, one of which hit Rivera in his back. They were able to apprehend Lindy Jones, 41, who was present in the automobile. The unfortunate officer met a devastating fate with a bullet below his protective vest. He was immediately rushed to Jamaica Hospital, where he would later be declared deceased. He leaves behind his wife Stephanie and a one-year-old son. Charged with weapon possession and defacing a weapon, Jones, another man with an extensive criminal background, was arrested. So far, no charges have been filed against Rivera. And to further help, a GoFundMe page for Officer Diller has been set up, raking in over $491,000 as of the following Thursday. Rav Kreiswirth was the longtime Rosh Av Beis Din in Antwerp, Belgium, and the founder and Rosh HaYeshiva of Yeshivas Merkaz HaTorah in Jerusalem. Already in his youth, Reb Chaim was renowned for his phenomenal brilliance, excellent character traits and geniality, and was dubbed the "Cracover Illui" at the young age of 15, in recognition of his prodigious powers of Talmudic analysis. Reb Chaim studied for many years in the famous Torah centers of Poland and Lithuania. Upon application to the Chachmei Lublin Yeshiva, he was tested by the Rosh HaYeshiva, Rav Meir Shapiro. Rav Shapiro was duly impressed by Reb Chaim's proficiency in all aspects of Torah. Rav Chaim Ozer Grodzinski as well as Rav Chanoch Henoch Eigis (both of Vilna) were very fond of him, and gave his sefer on Tractate Zevachim a warm approbation (the manuscript of which was lost during World War II). As accomplished as the Rav was in the realm of Torah Scholarship, so was he proficient in the realm of chessed and tzedakah, particularly as it pertained to the plight of young widows and orphans. Many hundreds across the globe, found tremendous financial support and relief, thanks to the untiring efforts of the ״אנטווערפען רב״ (as he was admiringly known). Rav Naftoli Jaeger Shlita, currently the famed Rosh HaYeshiva of Yeshivas Shaar Yoshuv in Far Rockaway, New York, would take note of the incredible genius of Rav Chaim; recalling how the latter would recite entire passages of the מהרשא's commentary by heart, word for word!! Gita Lisker MD is board certified in Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine and an associate professor in the department of medicine at Donald and Barbara Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell Health.  She grew up in Queens, NY and graduated valedictorian from Stern College in 1995.  She taught AP biology at Shevach during her gap year and then attended Einstein School of Medicine.  She did her residency in internal medicine at LIJ in a shomer shabbos program followed by a fellowship in pulmonary/critical care at LIJ. After fellowship, Dr. Lisker was hired as an attending at LIJ/North Shore (which had merged at that point) where she works in both the inpatient and outpatient setting and has been there since.  While originally, inpatient responsibilities included both ICU and pulmonary/RCU, Dr. Lisker eventually decided to stop working in the ICU for a more flexible work-life balance.  During her time as attending, she has started and run several initiatives and units, including a Fiberoptic Endoscopic Evaluation of Swallowing (FEES) program at North Shore and a Respiratory Care Unit (RCU) at LIJ. At the start of the pandemic, she was in the unique position of being able to offer hospital-type pulmonary care in the outpatient setting, which was desperately needed. Thus, she founded the CROWN (Coronavirus Related Outpatient Work Navigators) Program, which used telehealth with pulmonary doctors, homecare RN visits, home 02, home IV infusions and blood draws, and the most up to date medical treatments to treat COVID patients at home. The program serviced nearly 4,000 patients. Dr. Lisker was also involved in the set up of the Shor Yoshuv site in Far Rockaway as a field hospital in March/April 2020 and joining it with Northwell Health. She also served as a medical advisor to SAR Academy and High School, Yeshiva Har Torah, and the Young Israel of Jamaica Estates during the pandemic.  Her work during the pandemic led her to start a new initiative for Northwell, the HOME (Hospital Outpatient Management Experience), project  to use what was learned from CROWN and COVID to treat other pulmonary diagnoses as well. Dr. Lisker met her husband, Jay, at camp Morasha when they were both 15, went through YU/Stern together as pre-meds, got married during a gap year and then attended Einstein medical school and LIJ internal medicine residency together.  They currently live in Jamaica Estates where they are active members of their community and have three daughters, ages 12, 18 and 22 and a son in law! _______________________________________________________ Become a JOWMA Member! www.jowma.org  Follow us on Instagram! www.instagram.com/JOWMA_org  Follow us on Twitter! www.twitter.com/JOWMA_med  Follow us on Facebook! https://www.facebook.com/JOWMAorg/ Stay up-to-date with JOWMA news!
