Over the past 4 decades, hidden away in the hills of my tiny hometown in Belmont, California lies OTR Studio. It's a full functioning ultra-high-definition recording studio that rivals any in the world. At the studio, Gold Record Selling Artists, Grammy Winning Musicians and Academy Award film companies come to work with one of the rare gurus of sound. It took me 20 years of living in New York to realize I had a world class haven at OTR Studio to record in my own home town. Some people play instruments, like how I play the cello and trombone, some find new ways to invent instruments like DJ Qbert and his turntables and some rare talents, create and play the studio itself. Cookie Marenco makes her vintage mixing board and her stacks of sound signal processing modules into her personalized instruments. Her sensitivity to sound, experience in mixing and ability to pull and produce the best performances out of many artists is akin to a concert pianist feeling the touch of the keys to bring the most precise and dynamically beautiful music into real life. There's a reason many music legends such as saxophonist Charlie Parker's drummer Max Roach, the pianists Brad Mehldau, Jon Jang, the late great Chick Corea and major companies like Lucas Films and Sony all come to Cookie to fine tune their recordings. I came to record the podcast interview and we ended up creating an entire album. It is my honor to learn and share in real time, the evolution of audio in the highest possible fidelity, with Cookie Marenco.

Very few people have attained the level of innovation in their craft as DJ Qbert. The saying “If You Build It, They Will Come” was written about guys like him. Years before rising to global fame, he had already been discovering and perfecting a huge number of turntable routines and tricks that would become standardized scratches, staple sounds in hip-hop, pop culture caricatures in TV/Film/Video games, a focus within numerous music and sound production schools and the absolute metric of talent at the famed Disco Mix Club aka the DMC International DJ Competition. Qbert has bravely and pridefully straddled the line between commercial successes as visible as TV commercials for Apple and his own deep dirty break beat cuts such as ‘Galactic Butthair', pioneering scratch music film scores for psychedelic animated movies such as ‘Wavetwisters' and founding his own Qbert Skratch University. There is no way to ever be fully prepared for the freestyle music and comedy extravaganza that is the master DJ Qbert, and I'm honored to say we tried today on #UpgradeMe. https://www.DJqbert.com https://www.youtube.com/@thudrumble TEKTONIK Music Workout Diary by Dana Leong #TKwork A free workout journal curated by Grammy Musician & Wellness Enthusiast Dana Leong - Tag @TEKTONIKmusic #TKwork, Share, Tweet, DO IT! bit.ly/TKWORK Welcome back to Upgrade Me. The combination of growing up in an environment heavily influenced by Hip-Hop culture, it was only a matter of time before Rey was exposed to the turntablist and b-boy side of things. The "DJ" in Hip-Hop always went hand in hand with the "MC '' or "B-Boys" at all the scenes whether underground or mainstream in scenes throughout New York City. But it was the actual art and technical skills behind DJing that locked in his interest and passion for it. Absorbing all the information possible from attending DJ Battles, being behind the DJ booth at nightclubs, and watching performances from the best to do it such as DJ Q-Bert, MixMaster Mike, Roc Raida, Jazzy Jeff, DJ Scratch, and DJ Kid Capri, all that was left was to get behind the two turntables and a mixer. The rest was history.' From hours of practice in the good ol' bedroom to DJing in the hottest spots in New York City and New Jersey, the potential in this "career" was endless. Fast forward years of DJing events, and radio. networking, and showcasing his talent, Rey has built a name for himself as a DJ and an MC in the tri-state. In addition, he's become the vice president of one of the most sought-after Latin & Caribbean events companies in NYC. While being one of the main talents of the company, he brings his insight to the company and manages other DJs and MCs within the company.  The journey still continues as he is a student of the game and new opportunities arise day to day. It's all a matter of learning, growing, adapting and paying it forward. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/2djs/message Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/2djs/support

The author of this chapter is James W. Perkinson, a spoken word poet and adjunct professor of things spiritual in an urban college. He describes himself in the chapter as a “repentant Euro-colonizer” who unlearned some of his privilege as a “white male North American and an unwitting beneficiary of the entire history of colonial relations between my ancestors and the Philippine Islands since 1898…” So, you may be asking just what is it that James W. Perkinson is doing in exploring Filipino Babaylanism? And that's actually a specific question that he answers, while also confessing that he knows his contribution is minor. And as a participant in a shared dialogue on spirituality, babaylanism, for James, is a question about an entire way of life, not just spirituality. He then goes on to talk about DJ Qbert's, a Filipino-American DJ Qbert emerged in the early 1990's as hip-hop's premier turntablist on the forefront of the sonic improvisation known as “scratching”, and compare his scratching to something more cosmic and spiritual akin to shamanic journeying via indigenous plants, because DJs like Qbert regularly reflect that they “see” far beyond what they can produce. And to the degree babaylanism can be grasped as an upwelling of animate energy, Qbert's scratching also brings an upwelling of vital memory, channeling ancestral wisdom, combining a kapwa sensibility within his turntables and synthesizers.

Hello,Today we have something a bit different for you. TTSG goes a bit Melvyn Bragg with a history episode about Bay Area Filipino DJ culture. Our guest today is Oliver Wang, professor of sociology at Cal State Long Beach, one of the co-hosts of the Heat Rocks podcast, and the author of Legions of Boom, a fascinating book which tracks the history of Filipino immigrants into the Bay Area after the 1965 Hart-Celler Act — first into San Francisco and then out into suburbs like Daly City, Fremont, and Vallejo. If you’ve ever wondered why so many of the top DJs in the word are Filipino and want to know the creation story behind legends like DJ QBert and the Invizibl Scratch Piklz, this is well worth your time. We discuss the mobile DJ scene in the 90s, the class dynamics of post-1965 Filipino immigrants versus the manongs who came over in the early 20th century and settled in San Francisco, and how music and a party scene can create a sense of cohesion and true identity. Here’s some of the music these DJ crews created so you can play it as you listen along. Enjoy!
