Join Elevated GP by visiting THEELEVATEDGP.COM In Part 2 of his conversation with Dr. Melissa Seibert, periodontist Dr. David Wong unpacks why patients actually decline treatment — and it's rarely the money or the dentistry. It's the connection you failed to build. He walks through the soft-skill work that's defined his career: reading where a patient sits on the decision-making scale, designing a separate consultation room so he can sit beside patients instead of across from them, and disarming fight-or-flight by finding common ground fast. He also shares one of the most underrated networking moves in dentistry — joining your local Chamber of Commerce — and how it helped him launch a practice from scratch. The second half pivots to the clinical: ridge preservation as a high-ROI skill for general dentists, how to think about bone graft material selection without getting overwhelmed by terminology, membrane selection for beginners through advanced users, and the specific brands David reaches for day to day. About the Guest Dr. David Wong is a board-certified periodontist and Fellow of the International Congress of Oral Implantologists — the only periodontist in Oklahoma to hold that distinction. He completed his periodontal training at the University of Missouri-Kansas City as chief resident, earned advanced implant and oral plastic surgery credentials from Temple University and the Misch International Implant Institute, and has published in the field of oral plastic surgery. Beyond his clinical work, he has spent his career studying the art of case presentation and patient communication. When patients say "I'll go home and think about it," dentists default to "they don't value the dentistry" or "they can't afford it." David's argument: the most common reason is that you didn't build trust or form a connection. People will spend $20,000 on a European vacation but not on asymptomatic dental work — that's a comparison about trust and felt need, not budget. Connection is a long game, not a five-minute pitch. New dentists try to close trust in a single appointment. David's reframe: you'll see this patient over years. Foster the relationship as long as it takes, and they will do the treatment — maybe not all at once, but eventually. The "I'm the doctor, you're the patient" model breaks in fee-for-service. Patients in a fee-for-service practice are decision-makers, not compliant subjects. You have to meet them as one. Design the room around the conversation. For any case over roughly $1,500, David moves the patient to a dedicated consultation room and sits side-by-side at a table — not across the operatory chair. He pays attention to where he's seated relative to the patient and the door. He has even recorded his own case presentations on camera and had them coached. The Chamber of Commerce is one of the most underused networking moves in dentistry. Every city has one. Dues are minimal or free. You get a room full of local entrepreneurs — publishers, contractors, surgeons, service providers — solving the same problems you are, just in different industries. When David launched his practice from scratch, the Chamber funded part of his open house, ran his ribbon-cutting, and brought a crowd. Get your CE ROI right. Start with skills that pay dividends immediately — molar endo, ridge preservation/socket grafting. They have low downside (a missed socket graft is no worse than not grafting at all), short learning curves, and you'll actually use them weekly. "Sexy" CE without immediate clinical application sits unused. Keep ridge preservation simple. Don't get lost in the 70/30 vs. 50/50 mineralized/demineralized debate. David teaches just two categories: mineralized cortical bone, or mineralized cortical-cancellous bone. That's it. For membranes, beginners should default to a long-lasting resorbable collagen membrane. The fancier options (cross-linked, titanium-reinforced, amnion-chorion, PTFE) are handling-skill problems before they're outcome problems. Case presentation isn't about "salesy words." It's about reading non-verbal cues, responding appropriately, and conducting the conversation — not delivering the right script. Notable Quotes "It's not necessarily just because they don't want it. It's not necessarily just because of financial constraints. It's because we didn't build the trust. We didn't form that connection." "You're going to see this patient more than one time. Hopefully ten years from now they're still your patient — so you have to foster that relationship as long as it takes." "We'll spend $20,000 on a European vacation. We won't spend $20,000 on dentistry when we're asymptomatic and have no known issues." "You spend all that money [on a photography setup] and you still use your intraoral camera to sell single-tooth dentistry. Good job." "Two, three years later, I am the guy where they're just like, 'Dr. Wong, just take my money and do it.'" "A lot of times dentists think that case presentation is using the right words — salesy words. That's not it at all."

Jonathan Hines argues Washington's public-sector union system creates a self-reinforcing financial loop — public wages become dues, dues fund PACs, and PACs elect the politicians who set the next round of contracts. He calls for opt-in-only political fundraising, pay-to-play restrictions, and an end to government-run dues collection for partisan campaigns. https://www.clarkcountytoday.com/opinion/letter-restoring-balance-breaking-the-loop-of-public-union-dues-and-politics/ #Opinion #UnionDues #CampaignFinance #WashingtonState #PublicSectorUnions #FiscalIntegrity #Olympia #LaborReform #Janus #ClarkCounty

City councilors tend to spend most of their campaign funds on things donors expect: consultants, advertising, office costs. They also spend thousands of dollars getting around town, hobnobbing at dinners and clubs, and on donations to nonprofits in their districts. And there's the coffee — lots of coffee.

A plan to limit when federal employees can cancel their union du es if officially off the table. The Federal Labor Relations Authority is rescinding a previous proposal from 2022, which would have given federal employees only a once-per-year opportunity to cancel dues payments. Since 2020, dues-paying federal employees have had the option to cancel automatic deductions for union dues at any time.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

In this episode of I'm an Artist, Not a Salesman, host Luis Guzman sits down with DJ Drewski for a raw, wide-ranging conversation about longevity, identity, and what it really takes to build a meaningful career in hip hop without losing yourself. This isn't a highlight reel interview. It's an honest look at the grind behind the titles, the responsibility that comes with influence, and the quiet work people never see.DJ Drewski walks through his journey from carrying crates in New Jersey to becoming the first DJ from the state to hold a weekday midday slot on Hot 97 in over three decades. He talks openly about staying relevant in a fast-moving industry, how curiosity has shaped his career, and why paying dues still matters even when the industry pretends it doesn't. The conversation digs into the difference between overnight success and earned growth, and why the long road builds stronger artists, better leaders, and more grounded humans. The episode goes deeper than music. Drewski opens up about fatherhood, marriage, loss, and how personal responsibility changed the way he moves in business and in life. He shares the emotional impact of losing his father, how grief showed up in unexpected ways, and what it took to finally let go and move forward. These moments give real context to the confidence people see on the surface.Luis and Drewski also unpack culture, community, and service. From creating platforms for unsigned artists, to organizing festival stages for local talent, to opening a family-owned Rita's Italian Ice, Drewski explains why giving back isn't branding, it's a responsibility. He breaks down why he keeps showing up for the culture even when there's no check, no credit, and no applause.Key themes and takeaways discussed in this episode include:Staying relevant in hip hop without chasing trendsThe mindset behind long-term success versus fast fameUsing influence to open doors instead of guarding themNavigating grief, growth, and responsibility as a creativeWhy community work matters even when no one sees itBuilding businesses that reflect who you actually areThroughout the conversation, Luis Guzman challenges the idea that success should look flashy or loud. Instead, this episode highlights consistency, humility, and intentional decision-making as the real markers of growth. It's a reminder that being an artist doesn't mean avoiding business, it means doing business in a way that still feels honest. This episode is especially valuable for creatives, DJs, artists, and entrepreneurs who feel stuck between staying true to themselves and surviving in an industry that rewards shortcuts. It's proof that you can build something lasting without selling your soul, switching up on people, or forgetting where you came from.If this conversation resonated with you, make sure to subscribe to I'm an Artist, Not a Salesman on your preferred podcast platform. Maddox Batson is 15, doesn’t have a driver’s license, and is somehow getting his first passport so he can head out on a world tour. In this episode, he talks about bringing his entire family on the road, growing up on bluegrass with a mandolin-master dad, and how being homeschooled actually fits with a life of airports, soundchecks, and hotel rooms. He and Bobby get into what a “normal day” looks like for him, why he begged to get off the screen and onto real stages, and how it feels now to hear crowds singing every word back. Maddox also opens up about the hobbies that keep him grounded such as collecting watches, playing golf, hunting and whether he still feels like a kid when most of his friends are just starting high school. He shares his love for artists like John Mayer, Keith Whitley, George Jones, and Ed Sheeran, his “pinch me” Opry moment, and the story of averaging 35 points a game in basketball before a knee injury changed everything. Plus, there’s a funny clip about being accused of being a ball hog, some “uncountry” talk, and what it’s like playing shows in Nashville and beyond at 15 years old.
