The top of the world will see a total solar eclipse tomorrow. A partial eclipse will encompass a wider slice of the globe, including Alaska and parts of the northeastern United States. A solar eclipse occurs when the Moon passes directly between Earth and the Sun, blocking the Sun from view. The Sun’s hot but faint outer atmosphere, the corona, looks like silvery tendrils radiating away from the Moon. This eclipse begins when the lunar shadow first touches Earth, over northeastern Russia. The eclipse path then passes near the north pole, slides across parts of Greenland and Iceland, and finally over northern Spain before vanishing over the Mediterranean Sea. At its peak, off the coast of Iceland, totality will last for 2 minutes, 18 seconds. A partial eclipse, where the Moon covers only a portion of the solar disk, will flank that path. In addition to parts of North America, it’ll encompass much of western Europe and western Africa. From far-northern Alaska, the Moon will cover more than half of the Sun’s disk, at about 8:30 a.m. From Anchorage, about a quarter of the Sun will be covered. And from the northeast, the greatest eclipse takes place in northern Maine, shortly before 2 p.m. If you’re in one of those areas, remember to protect your eyes. Watch the eclipse only through special glasses or dark welder’s glass, and never look at the unfiltered Sun. Script by Damond Benningfield

A total solar eclipse is coming up on Wednesday. The Moon will cover the Sun, turning day to night across a narrow slice of the globe. Parts of Alaska and the northeastern United States will see a partial eclipse. The timing of the eclipse is known down to the second, and has been for decades; astronomers can predict eclipses far into the future. But making such predictions isn’t easy. It requires a detailed knowledge of the Moon’s orbit around Earth, Earth’s orbit around the Sun, and even the shapes of Earth and the Moon. Just when the first prediction was made is unclear. There’s no doubt that people have been predicting lunar eclipses for thousands of years. But they’re easier to forecast. Earth’s shadow is roughly 35 times wider than the Moon’s, so you don’t need to be quite as precise to get it right. There are stories that the Chinese were predicting solar eclipses more than 4,000 years ago, but no confirmation. An eclipse in 585 BC that stopped a war supposedly was predicted by a Greek scientist. But many present-day scientists doubt that. The first confirmed prediction was made by Edmond Halley, using the laws of gravity recently devised by Isaac Newton. Halley forecast that an eclipse would cross England on May 3rd, 1715. And he was right. So the event is known as Halley’s Eclipse – honoring the prediction of an astronomical spectacle. Script by Damond Benningfield

Years ago I forced people to listen to me sing this song and then I made a show about it and forced MORE people to listen to me sing it, and talk about turning fifty. Born Gaynor Hopkins in South Wales she grew up in a passionately religious family, which is where young Gaynor's first experience of performing came – singing “All Things Bright and Beautiful” at her local chapel. Fellow Welsh musician and broadcaster Mal Pope tells Matthew about her life. Dissident Hong Kong bookseller Lam Wing-kee was arrested and held for more than four hundred days by the Chinese authorities. They were investigating the publications sold at his Causeway Bay Bookstore, some of which were critical of the Communist regime on the mainland. He became a symbol of freedom of speech after he revealed his incarceration at a news conference. The journalist and author Emily Feng interviewed him. In 1988 Colonel Abdul Ahad Momand became the first, and so far only, Afghan citizen to travel into space. He was part of the three-person crew that launched from Kazakhstan on board the Soviet Soyuz TM-6 spacecraft. During the trip, Colonel Momand, who was a Muslim, became the first person to read from the Koran on TV while in orbit. U.S. forces have carried out another round of strikes against Iran, targeting military sites along the country's coastline. U.S. Central Command said Monday's operation was aimed at reducing Iran's ability to threaten commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz. CENTCOM says it struck about 90 Iranian military targets, including air defense systems, missiles and drone storage sites, naval assets and logistics infrastructure. CENTCOM says more than 20 U.S. Navy warships are now patrolling waters across the Middle East, and that U.S. forces remain ready to conduct additional operations if ordered.Graham Platner, the Senate candidate and self-described progressive from Maine, has dropped out of the race for one of Maine's Senate seats. It comes after mounting calls from within his own party, following a sexual assault allegation. In the state's primary last month, Platner was contending with Janet Mills, who won 41,000 votes compared to his 156,000 votes. Maine is a top target for one of the four seats Democrats need to gain to take control of the upper chamber. His replacement will be up against long-time Sen. Susan Collins (R-Maine), who's held her seat since 1996.Bonnie Tyler, the three-time Grammy-nominated Welsh pop star, has died at the age of 75. A statement from her family says she died in a hospital in Portugal, where she was being treated for an illness. La directora, Premio Nacional de Teatro y Premio Ojo Crítico, conversa con el programa sobre el esperpento, ese lenguaje teatral con el que el autor gallego convirtió lo grotesco, lo absurdo y lo trágico en una forma única de mirar la realidad. La producción de Nao d'Amores y el Teatro Español podrá verse en Madrid hasta el 26 de julio.El programa se acerca también al estreno de Electra jonda en el Festival Internacional de Teatro Clásico de Mérida, un montaje que fusiona teatro, flamenco y danza para revisitar el mito clásico desde una mirada contemporánea. Además, recordamos el centenario de Fiesta, la novela con la que Ernest Hemingway inmortalizó los Sanfermines y proyectó internacionalmente la ciudad de Pamplona.La actualidad cultural nos lleva a la Biblioteca Nacional, donde se incorpora el retrato de Álvaro Pombo, pintado por Hernán Cortés; a la Casa de América, que acoge la exposición Everybody Loves Chachacha de la fotógrafa Bego Antón, dedicada al freestyle musical canino; y al IVAM, con una nueva muestra sobre La Albufera. También conocemos la historia de las icónicas Piscinas das Marés, de Álvaro Siza, junto a nuestro colaborador Pedro Torrijos.El programa rinde además homenaje a la cantante británica Bonnie Tyler, fallecida a los 75 años. Su inconfundible voz rasgada convirtió himnos como Total Eclipse of the Heart o Holding Out for a Hero en referentes del rock de los años ochenta.
