In Episode 16 of the FFN ‘Mentor of the Month’ podcast, FFN Director Samantha Noon speaks with Katie Turner - an incredibly accomplished and capable 30-year-old who grew up on a 230,000-acre cattle and sheep station near Quilpie, in Southwest Queensland, which she later managed on her own. It was there she first learnt to fly her father’s light aircraft – and later got her pilot’s license. Flying has become one of her great loves, along with the feeling of freedom that it brings when you’re 8,500 feet in the sky. Katie has had a colourful career, filled with adventure, from living on the land, working in banking to exporting livestock and even modelling for Revlon’s Drought Angels campaign. Today she works for AAM Investment Group in Brisbane as their Operations performance manager. Her resilience and can-do attitude has been a great foundation to her success – which she’s very humble about and takes life as it comes. Her advice to young aggies is to not stress if you don’t know which direction you’re heading in. “There are no straight lines in life – sometimes you’ve got to ride the wave and I think by doing that, your purpose will follow.”

After lifting the lid on my business organisation last week with my business manager Michelle, this week is all about organisation in relationships. My interview with Wade on leadership in Season 1 was the most popular interview I've done, so I'm thrilled to be bringing him back again for this season on organisation.Increasingly, I'm being asked about the relationship side of my life, so I'm very happy to share this pretty intimate chat with Wade today. We are fortunate to live pretty full-on lives, between both of us running our own businesses, having our sweetheart Lexi, frequent travel and not having family support around us. We also openly talk about the fact that the last two years have been the toughest in our relationship to date. For us, having an infrastructure of organisation in our relationship has been the bedrock that has kept the ship (somewhat) afloat over the last couple of years. In recent months, we have had some major breakthroughs in our relationship, some of which we talk about in today's chat. This is the most we've ever shared about our relationship and I'm so grateful to Wade for sitting down with me for this chat.In our conversation today, we cover:The challenge when one partner wants to make positive changes, and the other one doesn'tOur weekly rhythm and who does what during our weeksThe concept of anchoring and how it has manifested with usThe productivity technique that he has sworn by for yearsBalancing structure with spontaneityThe importance of taking time away from your partner and familyThe areas we want to improve on next year in how we organise our lives togetherResentment, nagging and “point scoring” and how they have impacted usThe book he read that totally changed our relationshipThe greatest thing each of us has taught the other about businessAs I mentioned, there's something very exciting coming soon that Wade and I are collaborating on. Right now, 99% of New South Wales is in drought. Other parts of the country are in drought, on drought watch or about to go into drought onset. For us here in the city, it’s really easy to assume that it rains all the time. But when you’ve been waiting for rain for most of the year - things can get pretty tough. Which is why, here at Mamamia Out Loud - we want to help. So - we’re taking our Mamamia Out Loud live shows, to two of the biggest regional hubs in New South Wales - Tamworth and Dubbo. And all profits raised will be put back into the communities, thanks to the charity we are partnering with - Drought Angels. We will be in Tamworth on Friday the 17th of August and Dubbo Thursday the 20th of September. Find tickets here.
Like many other women in the bush, Tess Pemble wears many hats. Grazier, teacher, swim instructor, member of the community and voice of the outback. In this episode Sink or Swim I talk with Tess Pemble from Allan Hills Station and discuss the reality of living in drought and her work in providing swimming lessons in the bush when water is, an issue itself.
