What would you do if you were flying a plane, and all of a sudden the engine caught on fire? Well, that has happened to our amazing Author Corner guest Chris Smith. Chris joins our resident author and Director of Learning Danette to chat about his new book Leadership at 43000 Feet: Real Leaders Don't Need a Title. Chris has worked as pilot and got his accreditation in the counselling space, before combining those things and helping invent roles like pilot wellness manager, and then having them successfully implemented by major companies like Jetstar. He works as a senior lecturer at USQ and is a successful founder of A Cultural Leadership and speaker, as well as being an author. Chris chats about the standards of mental health in the workplace when he was a pilot, how to fix an engine that is one fire, and how to make sure your staff is mentally prepared to deal with the turbulence of business. His book also looks at a different approach that combines leadership and mental health and is a great resource for leaders who want their employees to be sustainable and not burnt out. With high interest rates still lurking and causing investors to hesitate going in on deal, it's time to debunk the myth around the state of commercial real estate. As a wholly owned subsidiary of Chatham Financial, USQ has the data to back up their strategies. That's why, today, I talk with Tom Miller, CEO of Union Square Financial (USQ), on what's really happening in the commercial real estate space and how you can still make it big in today's market. Don't believe every headline you read; multifamily, industrial and retail real estate are going strong. Financing rates are up, making growth challenging but not impossible… Continuing to grow rents will definitely help you weather the storm. Capital raising hit a bit of a speed bump since investors are waiting to see what interest rates do next. But, demand for commercial real estate will always be there. As rent growth is easing back to normal and construction slowing down, there's a great outlook for the multifamily sector. Just keep an eye on market data to know what to expect. Target markets with population and employment growth… And think big in major markets. As long as you keep building your portfolio and continue raising capital, you can compete in this (and any) economy. So, tune in today to find out just how resilient commercial real estate is and to strategize your next move to raise capital in today's climate! In this sermon we welcome back guest speaker Murray Wright to HumeRidge who will be exploring the line from the Lord's Prayer – “Your Kingdom come, Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven.” How might this prayer shape our thinking as we head into 2022 in the places and spaces that God has put us? About Murray: Murray has been around the Toowoomba scene for quite a while now in various roles. He arrived in Toowoomba back in 1984 to establish the work of Scripture Union in the Darling Down and South-West Queensland. In 1989, he returned to teaching at Harristown SHS eventually becoming principal at Toowoomba SHS when the Mt Lofty and Wilsonton campuses were combined. In 2003, he left teaching and joined the Toowoomba City Council, later Toowoomba Regional Council, in a senior management role. In 2010, Murray headed into semi-retirement and now works part-time at USQ with beginning teachers, checks in on the grandkids and his elderly Mum and heads to the golf course whenever he can! During this time (2012-2017), he was able to engage in his passion for integrating work and faith and whole-life discipleship as Director of Malyon Workplace. Geraldine Mackenzie, VC of University of Southern Queensland, joins Karl and Martin on HEDx to reflect on how her strategy, that was nearing completion when COVID hit, has been delayed, revised and is reorienting USQ to work even more closely with industry partners on translation, and even more closely with technology in transforming learning practices. She applauds how the sector is working together, at least in its respective parts, but acknowledges all in the sector are yet to have clarity on whether the short-term adjustments to regional living through tree and sea changes will have prominence over digital disruption in determining the nature of the seismic changes to come for the sector. This episode focuses on two key decision making theories: rational (sometimes also called classical) and behavioural. We explore how rational decision making may be the ideal but does not always reflect the reality of business decision making. This reality means that decision makers often need to use intuition and gut instincts to make satisfactory rather than optimal decisions. To discuss this topic we talk to Richard Hughes CEO of the Ipswich Jets Rugby League and Netball clubs. Richard has also lead fundraising teams of major not for profit organisations, is a founder of his own multi-award winning start up, and more recently, the CEO of the Children's Tumour Foundation. This episode focuses on the internal and external factors that influence decision making. Business leaders need to be cognisant of these influences when trying to be strategic in their approach to decision making and realise that these influences impact on decision rationality (i.e. making the optimal decision) To discuss this topic we talk to Chris Black, founder and CEO of Fortress Financial Solutions. Chris is also a current board member with the Toowoomba Chamber of Commerce and St Saviours School. He is a Graduate of the Australian Institute of Company Directors, has been noted as one of the most influential financial advisers in Australia by the Financial Standard, has lived and worked in the UK, is an alumni of USQ having completed a Business and Commerce double degree and, Chris tells us, most proudly a husband and father to three boys.Find Chris online: LinkedIn Fortress Financial Solutions Find our more about USQ's MBA.
This episode explores the concept of decision making, what it looks like in a business context, and why decision making is fundamental to business performance and success. We discuss the types of business decisions and the triggers for those decisions. To discuss this topic we talk to The Honourable Paul Lucas, former deputy premiere and attorney general of Queensland. Mr Lucas, now retired from political life, has returned to his first career in law but continues to serve in many various non-executive director roles for organisations such as the Institute for Urban Indigenous Health and the Central Highlands Development Corporation.Find Paul online: LinkedIn Holding Redlich Lawyers Find our more about USQ's MBA.
