Romantic relationships are sacred, powerful, and life-giving. But I don't have to tell you how difficult it is to love and let yourself be loved.Marriage and family therapist Dr. Terry Hargrave has been helping couples in crisis restore broken relationships for decades, teaching them how to get unstuck, improve communication, and move beyond destructive coping mechanisms—to find reciprocity, self-affirming confidence, emotional regulation, and a joyful, lasting love.In a world marked by loneliness, disconnection, and emotional dysregulation, Hargrave offers powerful insights on the human need for identity, safety, and belonging—and how we can heal the wounds that keep us stuck. Drawing on decades of therapeutic experience and deep personal reflection, Hargrave explains how coping mechanisms like blame, shame, control, and escape can damage relationships—and how the peace cycle of nurture, self-valuing, balanced give-and-take, and connection can restore wholeness. He discusses his unique approach to the healing and restorative power of relationships, which lifts us up to our potential, encouraging us toward a nurturing, self-valuing, non-controlling reciprocity, and true connection. In this conversation with Terry Hargrave, we discuss:How to turn around a relationship in crisis and get off the emotional rollercoasterHow to build security and trust in order to improve or repair a marriage or long-term relationshipCoping mechanisms of blame, shame, control, and escapePractical steps to learn emotional self-regulationWhat to do when only one partner is working on a relationshipThe role of the brain and neuroplasticity in relational repairAnd the spiritual underpinnings of Terry's approach to restoration therapyEpisode Highlights"It don't mean a thing if you ain't got that swing—until you claim your belovedness for yourself, nothing will change.""Relationships are a mirror—we discover who we are through how others see us.""Blame, shame, control, and escape—nothing good comes from these coping mechanisms.""Understanding doesn't produce change. Your relationship can change. But it takes a daily practice of hard work to create lasting change. And though you might fail, there is hope that you can begin again. Our coping mechanisms are not superpowers. They hurt us and the people we love.Understanding is not enough. Action and behavior has to follow for change to occur.[Any others?] It takes two to tango, but that doesn't get you off the hook from doing the work on yourself. And finally, a thriving relationship creates joy all around it, within a family, in a community, and it shows how personal relationships can change society.About Terry HargraveDr. Terry Hargrave. In PBSE episode 254, Mark & Steve respond to a heart-felt submission by a man who has been married for 45 years and for many of those years, the sexual relationship between he and his wife has been very broken. The reasons are multifaceted and very complex. These include—the horror of emotional and sexual abuse his wife endured during her growing up years; an extremely rigid and shame-based religious culture which they both grew up in and continue to participate in; his periodic use of pornography; his anger and emotional abuse towards his wife; and other factors. He desperately wants to repair the damage he has done and find a way to heal the emotional and physical relationship in his marriage. Mark & Steve not only address the issues that this listener submitted, but the most common issues couples face in connection with healing sexual wounds, creating sexual safety and building a truly healthy sexual relationship. This PBSE listener and his partner's situation is very complicated, with a lot of moving parts:Her past abuse/betrayalTrauma and betrayal within the relationshipRigid religious backgroundShame surrounding sex; lack of open communicationMisinformation surrounding sexSexual secrecyAlthough this situation does have some unique elements, it brings up a lot of common struggles for couples, both in and out of recovery:The changing physical dynamics of sexual expression/reciprocation in an ongoing, long-term committed relationshipThe constantly evolving state of a relationship as a wholeThe need for ongoing, vulnerable discussion in a coupleship regarding the various elements to intimacy, including the physicalWe all have existing “sexual paradigms”—what sex or different sexual acts mean; how critical it is; how it impacts the rest of the relationship, etc. Are willing to step back to openly assess where these paradigms come from; challenge them; be flexible; etc?Really exploring a coupleship's sexuality means backing up from preconceived “norms” around sex acts and forms of physical expression:As a coupleship, you have the right/obligation to determine how and what you would like your physical and sexual relationship to look like, as well as what it means and represents. Mark gives the real-life example of an acquaintance whose wife had a stroke and was permanently paralyzed from the chest down—after tenderly caring for her for a decade, he said it was the most intimate, loving and connected 10 years of their marriage.YOU are the sole architects of your own relationship—you get to collaboratively build it into what YOU want! For a full transcript of this podcast in article format, go to: "Sex in Our Marriage has Always Been "Broken." The narcissist is actually best explained in analogous terms as a spiritual criminal or sole thief/trader, such is the inexplicable hold they exert over their supply sources, ie human beings. It is noticeable to loved ones of a target of a covert narcissist, that while they remain physically present throughout the relationship with their narcissistic partner they don't appear themselves or to be present in spirit. Also, despite logically knowing the narcissist is out to destroy a person, it appears difficult for their former partners/targets to escape the pull of a narcissist even returning to the relationship, despite knowing it's not a good move. Www.weaponizedlove.com - (all narc con support services)#narccon #narcissist #toxic relationshipThe narcissist's discard is a most devastating experience initially, comes out of left field, and is dished out to their target at the worst possible time and usually in the cruelest of ways. Overcoming and recovering from such an emotionally, psychologically, spiritually and sometimes physically devastating life event can at first appear insurmountable. Akin to an NDE in terms of soul challenging, it can however be turned on its head and used to great advantage by a narcissists former partner, friend, or family member. Recovering from and reversing the narcissistic discard is totally possible, is highly recommended, and the results of such a reversal are exceptionally rewarding in a healing capacity. Harnessing the power of this painful experience with a narcissist and utilizing that energy for personal freedom and, as a transformative breakthrough out of the matrix so to speak, becomes a blessing. The physical effect of such an escape is oftentimes, a narcissist looking to return to the relationship quicker than their normal cycle would predict. God's armor is advised during this transformative time of personal recovery to deflect and protect the light within.https://youtu.be/-q0Yx1P_B8EDisclaimer: This YouTube channel provides information for educational purposes only. And not just having services, words, and rituals. But a life that is full of the goodness and power of Christ. There is a way of doing that. There is knowledge of spiritual growth and of spiritual life that can be taught and practiced. Spiritual growth is not like lightning that hits for no reason you can think of. Many of us come out of a tradition of religion that is revivalistic and experiential. But often the mixture of theological understanding and history that has come down to us has presented spiritual growth as if somehow it were not a thing that you could have understanding of. That you could know, that you could teach, that made sense. And so, we have often slipped into a kind of practical mysticism. The idea that if we just keep doing certain things, then maybe something will happen. We have not had an understanding of a reliable process of growth.”Jesus on “The Cure for Anxiety”Production NotesThis podcast featured Steve PorterEdited and Produced by Evan RosaHosted by Evan RosaProduction Assistance by Alexa Rollow & Kacie BarrettA Production of the Yale Center for Faith & Culture at Yale Divinity School https://faith.yale.edu/aboutSupport For the Life of the World podcast by giving to the Yale Center for Faith & Culture: https://faith.yale.edu/give

It's the Fourth of July in the US, and we're thinking about the military. Today and on Veterans' Day, we'll say “Thank you for your service,” but do we really know all that goes into that service and how it impacts the people that serve? This week, we're joined by military masculinity expert Dr. Ray Hinojosa from the University of Central Florida to uncover how gender informs how people are recruited into the military, why people choose to serve, and how it's changed over time.Remoy starts out with a confession… Was it as unexpected for you as it was for Samantha? Who knew he had THIS facet…How would you describe someone in the military? Remoy poses this question and leads us into the seldom-talked-about ways that folks used to  recruit soldiers into service back in the day.In the days of Napoleon, his rival, the Duke of Wellington, had choice words about his own soldiers, and Dr. Hinojosa shares context that gives us insight into the predatory recruiting strategies of that time and why those methods were used.(Despite Samantha's excitement about beurre blanc and butter in general, we do realize that Napoleon lost to the Duke of Wellington

For someone who is in the depths of an abusive relationship, it can be hard to make sense of what's happening. But the impacts on your life, and your mental health, can be profound. In this episode of From Survivor to Thriver, we had the great honor of sitting down with Nikki La Croce, who experienced an abusive relationship that changed her life. She discusses the growth that came from this hard situation and also delves into the mental health challenges that people in the LGBTQ community face and how we can all become more open-minded and accepting people. In early 2021, Nikki La Croce experienced what she now refers to as her “personal armageddon”, as she left a decade-long abusive relationship and simultaneously was faced with the unexpected loss of her mother amidst the peak of the pandemic.  Navigating these events and being forced to cope with two very different types of grief at once, Nikki's perspective on mental health, personal growth, and healing through trauma shifted drastically. She has always felt strongly about the importance of human connection and thanks to a tremendous amount of support from her family, friends and her therapist, she made the decision to return to the mic to share her own story in May 2022. Now, you can catch new episodes of Who The F*ck? every week to hear guests from all over the globe share their unique stories of resilience, gratitude and their missions to make meaningful change in the world. Nikki sees the continued growth of her show as a way to help others feel seen and heard, so they can learn how to prioritize their well-being and find the inner peace we all deserve.  In today's episode, we cover: The power of a strong support systemThe gaslighting and manipulation Nikki endured in her previous relationshipThe impact - good or bad- that your partner can have on your life Why boundaries matter so muchHow low self-esteem can impact your view on the love you think you deserveThe growth that can happen after leaving abusive situationsThe mental health struggles within the LGBTQ community Embracing an open-minded approach to lifeLiving your truth  We hope you enjoyed our conversation with Nikki! Kelly's son began smoking marijuana all day, every day after a serious trauma two years ago. Therapy and harm reduction strategies have led them to an arrangement where he is allowed to smoke occasionally, but only in the garage. Her son is smoking much less now, and in combination with therapy, reports he's stopped using substances as a primary coping mechanism.  Things have mostly settled down, but Kelly is still experiencing the constant mental and emotional stress of worry about his safety, and a desire to see him continue moving forward toward sobriety. After two years of being on high alert at all times, and with the potential of paying for college looming on the horizon, Kelly is reaching the end of her rope, finding it difficult to get enough sleep.
