Over Our Garden Wall
LIVE MUSIC & ME - GRAHAME SKINNER. EPISODE 22

Over Our Garden Wall

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 4, 2024 40:52

After a few false starts – for this episode, we finally managed to get on as our guest the singer, songwriter, musician Grahame Skinner.   Grahame's gig memories started on the 16th October 1978 ( Glasgow Apollo). We then weaved through numerous stories with a Stranglers connection, trying ( and failing) to become pals with the Bunnymen, and why Grahame, in his own words, was a ‘fanny'.   We also got recollections on walking back post gig from  Balhama to Drumchapel ( about 6 hours) , Lou Reed getting an electric shock on stage in Belgium, and the reveal that Ian Curtis & Michael Stipe both took all their dance moves from Grahame. Oh, and 2 recommendations for a live album we should all own ( and they couldn't be more different)   It took a while, however it was totally worth the wait. Big thanks to Grahame and check out the latest The Cowboy Mouth album when its lands. It will be a belter.  Enjoy, and stay safe. PS. Apols for the minor gremlins on the recording – it's still well worth a watch/listen

080 Jamie McKim: Johnstone Burgh injustice in derby, promotion hopes & recruitment PLUS Adam Hopes on The Drum's Conference C D-Day

JAMIE McKIM once joined a team as a player knowing he'd get less game time there – but he'd enjoy the training more. It's something that's stayed with him as he moved into the dugout. The Johnstone Burgh boss takes a break from trying to steer his side into the West of Scotland League's second tier to join us on the show this week. He looks back on last Saturday dramatic Renfrewshire derby in Conference A – and tells us why he thinks The Burgh should have ended Arthurlie's unbeaten season. As we get closer to the end of another campaign, Jamie and Paul discuss recruitment and how they go about shaping their squads. There's also the Keanie Park kitman who's helped keep the club going despite missing the opening periods of pretty much every home game. It's also hotting up in Conference C, where Drumchapel could – in theory – wrap up the title this weekend by winning their final league game of the season. But Petershill have a game in hand over the Drum and they'll finish top if they win this weekend and seven days later. Drum boss Adam Hopes tells us why he's given up on lifting the trophy and tells us why they must have their home ground sorted for next term, whatever division they're in. Paul also gets all romantic on us and tells us about the difference between loving football – and being in love with the beautiful game. There's all that and Mark Mackay's Best of the West as we go Down The Divisions. We'd also like to give a quick mention to our sponsors FortyFour Creative. David Brown may well be Scotland's most successful fintech entrepreneur. However, in a Glasgow accent undimmed by many years of living in London and the Middle East, he self-deprecatingly describes himself as a 'lunatic'. Well, if that's the case, he’s the lunatic behind the hugely successful Oxygen Finance and now Hi55 Ventures, which is revolutionising payroll for the benefit of employees and employers. And all of his start-ups have a strong social enterprise element inspired by the sense of community he appreciates from his upbringing in Drumchapel. In this fascinating interview, David also tells us about his business adventures in Saudi Arabia, and his early days as a music and fashion promoter in Glasgow, hanging out with the likes of Spencer Railton, Craig Ferguson and his old schoolmates Wet Wet Wet. He also explains the importance in life of 'jumping on the bus'. This interview with Fraser Allen was recorded in front of a live Scottish Business Network audience on Zoom on 19 May 2021. www.allencomms.co.uk

YOKER share the lead in a weather-affected West of Scotland League Conference C. But they've hit out at being given a 3-0 defeat to Drumchapel on the weekend after calling the sides' game off because of coronavirus issues. They claimed the game should be postponed after a player tested positive with covid-19. But Yoker were told they needed to show they had at least seven players either with the virus, awaiting a test or contacted by NHS Track & Trace. They couldn't – but chose to call the match off themselves anyway. That decision has now cost them three points. We'll talk about the latest controversy to hit the new setup. Then we'll listen to an unaired second part from a brilliant conversation we had with St Roch's manager Paul Kelly a few weeks ago. Paul tells us about his decision to go back to boss the Candy Rock again after winning the league in his first spell at the age of just 29. He reveals the historical family links he has with a club which is about more than just football. Paul lifts the lid on the self-doubt which engulfed him after leaving Petershill and remembers the days he played with Pat Nevin under Craig Brown at Clyde. It's all here as we go Down The Divisions. ADAM HOPES owns his own roofing company. But he's also one of the men hoping to show there's no ceiling on what Drumchapel United can achieve. The Drum have made the bold switch from top amateur team to the new West of Scotland League setup. When football resumes they'll be mixing it with the traditional former juniors' sides in Conference C. Adam is the Drum's co-manager with John Black – and they've been busy adding plenty of players to cope with the step up. One of those is former Hamilton skipper Darian MacKinnon, who was playing in the Premiership less than a year ago.. We'll speak to Adam about how they're setup for the season ahead, just how they managed to persuade MacKinnon to drop down the leagues and why he's not called Alan. Adam gives us the lowdown on just how many teams and players there are at the club - including the 90-year-old who plays in their grandads walking football side. Plus we'll hear how a distant family relative, a cricket pundit nicknamed Austin Powers, nearly landed Adam a move to New Zealand early in his playing days. It's all on Down The Divisions. Glasgow Girls: stigma and storytelling

On 26 March 2015 the Mental Health Foundation staged The Dust of Everyday Life, a conference at the CCA in Glasgow designed to ask challenging questions about the relationship between mental health and the arts. The findings will help to shape future editions of the Scottish Mental Health Arts and Film Festival, as we prepare for our tenth programme in 2016. This is a recording of the opening session, in which we marked the tenth anniversary of the Glasgow Girls campaign by looking back at how a group of Drumchapel schoolgirls helped transform perceptions of a stigmatised community, and asking what other campaigners, and storytellers, can learn from them. The panel consisted of Amal Azzudin (one of the Glasgow Girls, now working for the Mental Health Foundation), Cora Bissett(creator of Glasgow Girls the musical), Brian Welsh (director of Glasgow Girls the TV drama) and Lindsay Hill (director of the Glasgow Girls documentary). The session was chaired by Joyce McMillan (theatre critic and cultural commentator, the Scotsman).
