What does it really mean to believe that God loves you? And how does knowing His love change the way we live as Christians? Rick Robertson of Jubilee Church Wirral explores 1 John 4:7–21 and shows that God's love isn't simply an idea we learn about – it is the foundation from which we live the Christian life. Rick looks at three key truths: 1. Love begins with God. God is the source and the very definition of love. His love is eternal, unchanging and limitless. Unlike human love, which can be imperfect and inconsistent, God's love is completely committed to us. We can be fully known by Him – including our weaknesses, failures and brokenness – and still be completely loved. 2. God's love has been revealed through Jesus. We don't have to wonder what God's love looks like. He demonstrated it by sending His Son, Jesus, into the world. Through Jesus' life, death and resurrection, God's love has been made visible and the barrier of our sin has been dealt with. Jesus brings us into the relationship of love that has existed eternally between the Father and the Son. 3. We need to choose to believe God's love. Knowing that God loves us intellectually isn't enough. We need to receive and believe His love. When we know that we are loved, secure and accepted by God, it changes how we live and how we love others. Rick also explores the important biblical word “propitiation”, explaining how Jesus' death dealt with the problem of sin and removed the barrier that stood between us and God. Ultimately, the message is simple but profound: God knows you completely, and He continues to choose to love you. His love is not dependent on our performance or perfection. The world constantly seeks to define people by appearance, background, achievements, status, abilities or circumstances. These labels can easily lead to comparison, division, insecurity and conflict. But the gospel offers a completely different starting point: before anything else, believers are children of God.
