Noel catches up with Grahame Skinner of Hipsway. The Scottish new wave band is best known for their single, "The Honey Thief," which reached the top 20 of the Billboard Hot 100 in 1986. The band released two albums before breaking up in 1989. The band reformed in 2016 and released their third album. Smoke and Dreams, in 2018. Grahame also fronts The Cowboy Mouth and The Skinner Group.

This week, we're joined by Hunter DeBlanc to talk about his hometown heroes, Cowboy Mouth, and their high-energy 1997 single “Jenny Says.” Against the odds, this Louisiana band broke into the modern rock scene with a song that was as relentless and rowdy as their live shows, led by drummer and lead singer Fred LeBlanc's electric stage presence. Though “Jenny Says” opened doors to movie soundtracks, Cowboy Mouth couldn't find another radio hit and eventually parted ways with their major label. After a few false starts – for this episode, we finally managed to get on as our guest the singer, songwriter, musician Grahame Skinner.   Grahame's gig memories started on the 16th October 1978 ( Glasgow Apollo). We then weaved through numerous stories with a Stranglers connection, trying ( and failing) to become pals with the Bunnymen, and why Grahame, in his own words, was a ‘fanny'.   We also got recollections on walking back post gig from  Balhama to Drumchapel ( about 6 hours) , Lou Reed getting an electric shock on stage in Belgium, and the reveal that Ian Curtis & Michael Stipe both took all their dance moves from Grahame. Oh, and 2 recommendations for a live album we should all own ( and they couldn't be more different)   It took a while, however it was totally worth the wait. Big thanks to Grahame and check out the latest The Cowboy Mouth album when its lands. It will be a belter.  Enjoy, and stay safe. PS. I recently attended Jazzfest in New Orleans where I got to see The Rolling Stones, one of my favorite bands, and I wanted to spend some time on the podcast to talk about my experience as well as four important lessons that I learned from attending (actually five because I also have a bonus one to share)!Starting with the fifth bonus lesson, I reflect on the power and the importance of being a good human. This might sound simple enough, but it can be easy to forget sometimes especially when in the heat of a moment. I share an example of some people in the show who, despite being in one of the greatest cities in the world and seeing The Rolling Stones (one of the greatest rock bands of all time), were not behaving like good humans, something that I just couldn't understand.I also discuss the mantra “Buy the Ticket,” a phrase that I first heard in a job interview years ago that has stuck with me ever since. It is a reminder to seize opportunities and enjoy life, whether it's attending a concert, embarking on a new adventure, or simply making time for loved ones. After all, life is too short to let busyness and excuses hold us back.Another lesson that I took away from Jazzfest has to do with The Rolling Stones themselves and their incredible resilience. Despite setbacks and doubts, as well as Mick Jagger once having told himself that he would stop rocking at 33, they continue to rock the stage, proving that age is just a number and that limitations are often self-imposed. It's a powerful reminder to challenge the lies that we tell ourselves and others and to embrace our limitless potential. After all, whether you tell yourself that you can or that you can't, you're right either way.Let's also not forget about the importance of having fun! Between Cowboy Mouth's infectious energy to Jimmy Buffett's laid-back vibes, Jazzfest is ultimately a celebration of life, reminding us to loosen up and embrace the present. The effervescent lead singer and drummer for Cowboy Mouth, Fred LeBlanc, is interviewed by Lanea Stagg of The Recipe Records Series of rock'n'roll cookbooks and Jude Southerland Kessler of biographical narrative series, The John Lennon Series. In addition to video of two of the band's top charted songs, "I Believe" and "Jenny Says," Fred shares his musical tribute to John Lennon, a touching emotional memory he wrote called "12-8." He talks candidly about the impact of John Lennon and The Beatles on his life and how the loss of John made him realize that we're promised no tomorrows...urging him to move forward with his band. That decision propelled his group into the Louisiana Music Hall of Fame and on to national success. Fred also discusses his love of New Orleans and Mardi Gras with the big hit, "Mardi Gras State of Mind." One of the most inspiring episodes of SSSS ever! Enjoy!

Been a long time since we did a two-fer episode! Here we go! The Beatles often seemed to turn in some of their best work when up against a deadline. A handful of songs that would make up most the Help! album seemed to come about in short order, as the band had to write and record a big majority of the album before leaving to film. "You're Going to Lose That Girl" is one John knocked out in short order that really shows the band's growth as a unit, and represents them at maybe the most professional sounding of the early Beatles era. A killer, classic John vocal with pitch perfect call and response vocals from Paul and George and rock solid foundation from Ringo, pushed forward by a frantic bongo overdub. It just seems to be the epitome of early-Beatles cool, especially in light of the brilliant performance footage of it in the Help! film. And in very different times, the band turn in one of their most straight ahead rocking performances with "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band (Reprise)." By the end of the Sgt. Pepper sessions, the band hadn't really done a true out and out fast rocker since maybe the middle of 1965. Ready to put their masterpiece to bed, the band spent the last day of the sessions letting it all out on the uptempo penultimate track. With some of Ringo's most killer grooves (the Beastie Boys would sample the intro on Paul's Boutique, their own hip-hop Sgt. Pepper), absolutely killer guitar from George and John, and some of Paul's most frenzied shouting, the band showed that even though they were branching out in all directions, they could be the best rock and roll band in the world. Joining us to talk these two songs this week is Mary Lasseigne! The bassist for The Cowsills (formerly of Cowboy Mouth, just like me - there's a lot of us) stops by to talk backing into the Beatles via Wings, playing with 60s legends, Now and Then, and these two very different Beatles tunes. Because I've mostly been writing essays since I'm working towards my MSW. And after about five years of doing freelance journalism on tight deadlines, while working a full time job writing like a five page paper double spaced is like really nothing to me. So I began Adobe and Teardrops in part inspired by the band we're going to be talking about cowboy mouth around is a lyric from one of their songs Man on the Run. Yeah, that was always meant to be a space to focus on artists who were flying below the mainstream sonically, of course, I think it's sort of getting more of a resurgence. But in the early 2010s, there was a lot of crossover between punk and country that I've found really excited. But then also artists who are generally marginalized by the music industry. So women, LGBTQ people, BiPOC people then to really shine a light on those artists within the Americana world. Sloane Spencer  1:45  Definitely.
