In New York she has been grinding rather than gliding: she needed two tiebreaks to get past 25th seed Marie Bouzkova 7-6(3), 7-6(3), dominating both breakers to reach the last 16. The 2022 US Open champion is chasing a second title here, and her section has been the toughest in the draw all fortnight.Zheng Qinwen's story is remarkable. The Paris 2024 Olympic gold medallist and former World No. 4 fell to No. 121 after elbow surgery and a year of stop-start rehab — she had to come through QUALIFYING just to reach this main draw. Now she's on a SIX-MATCH WINNING STREAK and back in the US Open round of 16 for the first time in two years, after producing the comeback of the tournament: from 5-0 DOWN in the deciding set and SAVING MATCH POINT against 22nd seed Madison Keys, she won the final SEVEN GAMES to take it 1-6, 7-6(3), 7-5.Two months ago Zheng lost to Alexandra Eala in the first round in Washington. Her projected route from here is a quarterfinal against Karolina Muchova and a semifinal against Jessica Pegula — the smoother half of the draw.Taylor Townsend is the story of the American week. Ranked 96th, the left-hander has beaten Roland-Garros runner-up Maja Chwalinska, then produced a serving clinic in round two — winning ALL 23 of her first-serve points — before upsetting 15th seed Diana Shnaider 6-2, 6-7(3), 6-3 across 2 hours and 27 minutes to reach the fourth round for a second straight year. "I'm built for these moments," she said afterwards. A former doubles No. 1 with hands nobody else in this draw has, she has NEVER reached a Grand Slam singles quarterfinal — at the US Open or anywhere.They have never played. Power against touch, the biggest hitter in the game against the best volleyer in the draw, on Sabalenka's favourite court with an American crowd desperate for an upset. This is the most stylistically fascinating match of the round.
