A few years ago the Los Angeles County Department of Mental Health (LACDMH) went forward to create new kinds of services in unchartered waters. What developed was a courageous and innovative program called, Street Psychiatry-HOME (Homeless Outreach Mobile Engagement) Team. It was courageous because certain techniques to help seriously mentally ill people living on the streets had never been tried before. Innovative because a Psychiatrist was bringing care outside to the streets, and The Team was made up of various disciplines - Nurses, Social Workers, Peers - all working as one to save lives. This episode is the final one of a four part series on the story of this program's successes, with Elizabeth Cope, the Administrator and Co-Manager of 220 staff who are spread throughout the Los Angeles, California area. Here is another program leader with the same kind of dedication and enthusiasm that is bringing positive results and awards of recognition for their excellence in serving the unhoused. The program model takes will, takes funding and takes vision to implement in stemming the tide in Los Angeles and other locales, of people pouring onto the streets to live under freeway passes, tents and other ways, unable to be housed, living in dire circumstances. The LACDMH is investing in this model with the department's motto as an operating attitude - Hope, Wellness and Recovery. The LACDMH 24/7 access number for help is 1-800-854-7771 The National Suicide Crisis Line is #988

This week on the podcast I speak with Kim Vaughan and Megan Durney of the Threefold Community Farm in Chestnut Ridge, NY, just outside of New York City. Threefold Community Farm is one of the key centers for the practice of biodynamic agriculture, as well as the training of biodynamic farmers through the Pfeiffer Center. Biodynamic agriculture is a spiritually-informed model of farming flowing from the work of Rudolf Steiner and it has had a big impact as one of the original forms of organic agriculture. Join us to learn more about the rich cultural community in which the Threefold Community Farm is located as well as about how they work to train students and farm interns in the heightened forms of perception and awareness that are required by biodynamics.Megan Durney is Co-Manager of Threefold Community Farm. She collaboratively oversees the vegetable, nursery plant, herb, seed and bee operations, heads up intern training, is an instructor in their One-Year Part-Time Training in Biodynamics, and serves as a board member of the Nature Institute. Megan joined the Pfeiffer Center as an intern in 2006 and became a staff member in 2010. In 2014-2015, she studied seed saving and CSA management under Harald Hoven at Raphael Garden in Fair Oaks, CA, later bringing that knowledge back to the Pfeiffer Center and launching a thriving CSA program, now in its ninth season. Kim Vaughan is Herdsperson and Dairy Manager of Threefold Community Farm, heading up the only dairy herd in Rockland County, NY. She supports all aspects of farm operations, fundraising and administration. Kim first met biodynamics at a year-long course with Harald Hoven at Raphael Garden in Fair Oaks, CA. She soon joined their CSA and became a star volunteer, serving on the steering committee, organizing fundraisers, and milking the cows on weekends. In 2016, Kim stepped away from Waldorf kindergarten teaching to become a full-time apprentice at Raphael Garden, followed by a summer at Fulcrum Farm in Grass Valley, CA, where she helped tend a small herd of Scottish Highland cows. She is currently in her seventh season living her dream job of professional cow cuddler. In this episode of the podcast, Mark Rutherford, Co-Manager of the Canadian large-cap equity strategy, discusses the current investment landscape in Canada, highlighting the wide dispersion in sector performance and the impact of central bank policies. He delves into the long-term theme of the global energy transition and its far-reaching effects on various market sectors in Canada. Insights into insurance and banking sector performance are provided, as well as examples of specific portfolio holdings within the Canadian equity strategy. Key points from this episode: On the surface, healthy and attractive returns can be found across equity markets in Canada. However, there is quite a bit of dispersion under the surface. Year to date, top-performing sectors include energy and materials – which have been the top performers for a few years now – while telecoms, real estate, and some utility stocks are lagging the market. One longer-term theme that is top of mind, both for Canada and numerous countries around the world, is the ongoing energy transition. Long-term opportunities that Canada is well positioned for include energy production, natural resources and renewables, critical minerals, and utilities. AI has been a big driver of incremental change within the utilities sector. Companies like Fortis, Hydro One, and AltaGas are investing more every year and building up the rate base, which ultimately will grow their earnings over time. One simple heuristic Mark's team uses when evaluating portfolio construction and portfolio holdings is to ask where they see headwinds and where they see tailwinds. Life insurance companies have benefited from higher interest rates and improved earnings mix, while banks are facing challenges due to slowing loan demand and higher provisions for loan losses. This week we are talking with Jake Beckstrom, who is U2FP's Co-Manager of the Cure Advocacy Network along with our Wisconsin advocate Michael Moore. It's a great conversation where we talk about the drama that took place this year with our legislative work in Wisconsin, where we past our $3M SCI Research in the Wisconsin Assembly, but were unable to then pass it in the Senate. It was a nailbiter that came down to the wire, and Jake and Mike had front row seats for the dramatic, if disappointing end. But they are undeterred. And they stopped by to talk to us about how they are still chasin the cheddar in Wisconsin.

Part 1 The People of the Red Mountain are an Indigenous led grassroot organization comprised of Paiute & Shoshone peoples, surrounding Indigenous nations, and supporters working to protect Pee'hee Mu'huh (Thacker Pass) from the possible construction of the Thacker Pass Lithium Mine in northwest Nevada. If the mine is built it would be the United States largest source of lithium supply generating 60,000 metric tons of battery-grade lithium carbonate annually. The People of the Red Mountain are calling for support in demanding the U.S. Department of the Interior to rescind the Thacker Pass Lithium Mine Project Final Environmental Impact Statement, Record of Decision, and Plan of Operations. Lithium Nevada Corp. is a subsidiary of the Canadian corporation Lithium Americas Corp. which proposes to build the open pit lithium mine with a project area of almost 17,933 acres that will use 5,200 acre-feet per year of water (equivalent to an average pumping rate of 3,224 gallons per minute) in one of the driest regions in the nation. Lithium Nevada Corporation characterizes the mine as a “green” project, despite estimates the mine will produce an estimated 152,703 tons of carbon dioxide emissions every year and will cause irreversible harm to the Fort McDermitt Paiute and Shoshone Nation, ancestral massacre sites, the water, air, medicines, culturally important wildlife relations, and everything else the land and waters culturally sustain for the Peoples. The Bureau of Land Management approved the mine on January 15, 2021, without adequately consulting our tribal members. Tune in on how support and Pee'hee Mu'huh (Thacker Pass). The People of the Red Mountain (https://peopleofredmountain.com/) are having action on April 24th, 2022, at Ildewild Park, Reno, NV from 11:00am to 5:00pm. Guests: Gary McKinney (from the Duck Valley Shoshone Paiute Nation and Fort McDermitt) of the People of the Red Mountain. Joshua Dean Sr. (Western Shoshone, Walker River Paiute Nation), of the People of the Red Mountain. Part 2: On 2/27/2022, the IPCC Sixth Assessment Report, Working Group II, Climate Change 2022: Impacts, Adaptation and Vulnerability Report was released with participation from Indigenous scholars, academics, and scientist in still a relatively new phenomenon (eight to ten years). For more sixteen years, Indigenous peoples were largely excluded in participating in the previous IPCC assessment reports. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) was established by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) in 1988. In 1990, the IPCC's First Assessment Report (FAR) was published. However, in 2007, the IPCC and former U.S. President Al Gore won a Nobel Peace Prize while Indigenous peoples were absent and often locked out of the IPCC and WMO process. Today's guest is one several Indigenous academics, scholars, and scientist to participate and contribute to the IPCC Sixth Assessment Report, Working Group II, Climate Change 2022: Impacts, Adaptation and Vulnerability. Tune in for summary and update on the report's highlight in Protecting Mother Earth.
