This week For The Wild Podcast presents Part One of a two-part conversation between brontë velez and Dr. Tiffany Lethabo King. Circumferencing Dr. Tiffany Lethabo King's book The Black Shoals: Offshore Formations of Black and Native Studies, brontë and Tiffany explore sacred laughter, Black and Indigenous feminism, sexuality, liberation, ceremony, and protocol. This simultaneously intimate and expansive dialogue allows us to rethink the stories and structures we've been told regarding Black and Indigenous relations. Guided by a unquantifiable love and trust in Black and Native freedom dreams, Tiffany prompts us to explore ritual, space, and connection as antidote.Recorded in January of 2021, this interview is a companion piece to a project called Can I Get A Witness, a collaborative transmedia project between For The Wild and Lead to Life.Tiffany Lethabo King is an Associate Professor of Women's, Gender, and Sexuality Studies at Georgia State University which is located on the ancestral lands of the Mvskoke Creek. While here, she is also grateful to be able to touch the Georgia soil where her maternal and paternal ancestors survived slavery and created New Worlds of possibility. Her research is situated at intersections of slavery and indigenous genocide in the Americas. King is the author of The Black Shoals: Offshore Formations of Black and Native Studies. King is currently working on a project tentatively titled Red and Black Alchemies of Flesh: Conjuring A Decolonial and Abolitionist Now.Music by Larkhall, Stoney Creation, and MonteQarlo. Alex and Helen were delighted to sit down with new media artist, composer and pianist Larkhall to talk about his latest album: Say You're With Me.Written during the arrival of his second son when Larkhall realised he was suffering from depression, Say You're With Me explores his journey of understanding and caring for his mental health. From moments of meditative stillness to joyful exuberant climaxes, the album takes us through many of the emotions we experience in our every day lives. In this episode Alex, Helen and Larkhall discuss caring for your mental wellbeing via exercise, meditation, medication and even micro-dosing. They talk about how often we hear the mental health stories which aren't successful, or don't have a happy ending; Larkhall feels his experience is different and is equally important to share. The trio chat about how the new album came to fruition, how Larkhall composes and how he has built a computer system that develops visuals which react in real-time to his compositions. In his live gigs, Larkhall combines his post-classical style with these design algorithms, creating vivid imagery which is unique to every performance.Say You're With Me is available on bandcamp, Larkhall's website, and all major streaming platforms.Episode edited and produced by Daisy Grant Productions. Near the town of Larkhall, Lanarkshire, lies a small village called Millheugh at the Avon Gorge, stood Broomhill House. Its owner, Captain Henry Montgomery McNeil Hamilton was posted out to South Africa for military service in 1897 during the Bore War. It was here where he met an Indian woman named Sita Phurdeen who worked in the mines and they later returned to Scotland together in 1902. Known now as the Black Lady of Larkhill, Sita was said to be unhappy at her situation here in Scotland and had returned home. Many people refuse this information and believe she was instead murdered. The only thing that is agreed upon, is that she disappeared, never to be seen again.... Join us live as we talk about the #BlackLadyofLarkhall #Paranormal #Podcast #Scotland #Ghost
This week's guest on Sheer Isolation has dedicated her life to creating music videos for local artists, documenting art projects, helping Swindon's school-leavers on their first steps towards a career in media, as well as finding time to work on her own artwork, it's the founder of Magic Torch Productions, Jaime Bullock. We talk to her about how having such a diverse range of skills means she gets to work with people from all walks of life, whether being commissioned to produce a documentary, or creating a Swindon Spiderman using nothing more than an old friend and some body paint. She also works at the Swindon's Platform Project which gives advice to youngsters about choosing the right career path, and helping them to follow their passions in life. For our music selection, Jaime picks a tune from the 80s as a tribute to friend, Levi Saunders, a musician who recently passed away. We also play a post-classical piano piece from Larkhall, who is performing in Trowbridge this week. In news, we note how there are no requirements to wear masks in crowded venues or nightclubs, even though this rule has just been re-enforced for shops and public transport in England.
As the ocean warms and grows more hostile, the icy waters of the Taku river have served as refuge for salmon and an abundance of more-than-human kin. However, threats from mining and resource extraction are posed to forever change the habitat of the watershed. The 1957 abandonment of the Tulsequah Chief Mine in British Columbia left a disastrous environmental impact. This mine still requires billions of dollars worth of clean up action and constant monitoring to ensure the protection of this river system. The Tulsequah Chief serves as just one example of threats to the vital river systems of so-called Canada and The United States. The Taku, the Unuk, and the Stikine are all transboundary rivers beginning in British Columbia, Canada, and flowing through to Alaska. They are unique both in their beauty and abundance, and in the inter-governmental action required to regulate them. The Boundary Waters Treaty of 1909 dictates relations across international borders, but the treaty alone will not protect these rivers from acid mine drainage and continued extraction. Chris Zimmer invites us to imagine what clean, healthy rivers can bring us, and to propel love for these rivers towards ethical action. Chris Zimmer is the Alaska Campaign Director of Rivers Without Borders. Based in Juneau, Chris has been with Rivers Without Borders since 2001. Chris enjoys fishing and hunting in the watersheds he helps to protect.Music by Jon Yonts, GoldenOak, and Larkhall.Visit our website at forthewild.world for the full episode description, references, and action points.
BRIAN CRAWFORD went from playing Football Manager the game to – well – being a football manager. The Larkhall Thistle boss will never forget the chance he got to play in the juniors at 17. And that's why he'll never shy away from giving youth a chance. Brian tells us about life at the oldest continuous club which started out life in the juniors. Then we look back at his own goal-laden playing career, when he was the talk of the game. His strikes for the likes of Carluke and Cumbernauld eventually saw him step up to the seniors with Clyde. But despite being their top striker at Christmas he was still on the bench. We hear why scoring a winner for Stranraer one night saw him lose his job the next day. And how refusing to be subbed before a corner was taken led to him staring at a year out of the game. Plus there's Roache's Roundup and Mark Mackay's Best of the West. It's all here as we go…Down The Divisions. We'd like to give a quick mention to our sponsors FortyFour Creative. Paul MacDonald describes the discovery and lab testing of an apparently large cat's carcass found near Bannockburn in 2020, and then discusses how the mapping of witness reports in south Scotland has identified key places to investigate. We then discuss the recent night-time cat footage in Larkhall, Scotland, with the houseowner Derek, asking whether it was a puma on the pathway, or a domestic cat on the fence, and how it influenced his family and neighbours.Word of the week: riparian 8 October 2021

Clare Balding is walking with dogs (and their owners) throughout this series of Ramblings. Prog 4: Larkhall, South Lanarkshire. This week Clare Balding travels to Larkhall in South Lanarkshire to meet Scott Cunningham. A veteran of some of Britain's long-distance walks (including the West Highland Way, the Pennine Way and the Southern Upland Way) as well as the bagger of multiple Munroes, he never walks without the dog, he describes as his 'best-mate', Travis. On this walk around the Larkhall area, he describes the intensity of their relationship and the joy of his companionship. This will be a particularly moving walk for Scott, as Travis - who is a guide-dog - is retiring the following day, and a new dog, Milo, will take over. Scott was awarded an MBE last year for his achievements, which include raising over £150,000 for Guide Dogs for the Blind. Producer Karen Gregor.
