With 1.1 million square feet of space in an entirely contiguous hall, the New Orleans Ernest N. Morial Convention Center provides the largest single exhibition space in the country. Now that center is set for improvements to make the space more environmentally and pedestrian friendly. Michael J. Sawaya, Convention Center President was recently named one of the city's most notable industry newsmakers by New Orleans CityBusiness. He joins us today for more on the future of the center. A few episodes back Putumayo World Music's Dan Storper stopped by to update us on the cultural brand's activity during the pandemic. Today, he's back with a new CD from Linda Ronstadt, an icon of the Americana music scene who spent the last six decades, who has recorded everything from Michael Nesmith's “Different Drum” to American big band orchestras with Nelson Riddle. The Putumayo release also complements a book release - Feels Like Home: Songs From the Sonoran Borderlands - Linda Ronstadt's Musical Journey. Today's episode of Louisiana Considered was hosted by Karl Lengel. Our managing producer is Alana Schreiber and our digital editor is Katelyn Umholtz. Welcome to the Elevator World News Podcast. Today's podcast news podcast is sponsored by elevatorbooks.com: www.elevatorbooks.com NAEC SHARES POSITIVE NEWS FROM EVENT HOST CITY NEW ORLEANS The National Association of Elevator Contractors (NAEC) shared positive news from New Orleans, host city of the 2021 NAEC Convention & Exposition on October 4-7 and where Hurricane Ida struck on August 29. Event venue the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center did not sustain significant damage and has electricity; the Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport is operational, with full flights expected to resume on September 5; and most of the city expects to have power fully restored by the end of next week. Regarding COVID-19, NAEC continues to adhere closely to national, state and city mandates. The association relayed a message from New Orleans & Co. President Stephen Perry, who said the city's flood-protection system designed after Hurricane Katrina worked as intended, with homes and businesses not taking on water. He continued: “There was no need for rescue operations in New Orleans. Media reports that Ida was New Orleans' ‘second Katrina' are not accurate. We are extremely grateful for the investment made in our system by the nation. It worked. Our hearts go out to people in surrounding parishes who sustained much more significant damage.” Expo attendees will have the opportunity to make donations to those impacted by the storm to “help show their appreciation for the hospitality already shown to us by the wonderful people in New Orleans.” NAEC said it would also like to acknowledge that this year marks the 20th anniversary of the CET program, and that it is “able to host events like this because of so many innovators and volunteer leaders — including ELEVATOR WORLD — who were instrumental in creating elements of the program.” For more information about the expo, visit the show website. Welcome to the Elevator World News Podcast. Today's podcast news podcast is sponsored by elevatorbooks.com: www.elevatorbooks.com NAEC PROVIDES COVID, IDA UPDATES AHEAD OF NEW ORLEANS EVENT In response to questions and concerns about COVID-19 cases in New Orleans, the National Association of Elevator Contractors (NAEC) believes it can safely hold its planned, in-person 72nd Annual Convention and Exposition, David Smarte, the association's Global Education & Safety Officer, said recently. “We wanted to reassure you that we are closely monitoring the situation and will always be making decisions in the best interest of our members' health and safety,” Smarte said. He noted that attendance registration numbers are “well ahead” of numbers in NAEC's last in-person meeting: 878 this year, compared to 517 in 2019. He said the organization is considering several safety precautions, including widening aisles, possible mask mandates and sanitizing protocols. Smarte said “vaccination rates continue to soar in NOLA,” and he assured members that NAEC will keep them informed of the situation. In addition, NAEC provided an update on the effects of Hurricane Ida, which struck New Orleans on August 29. The association said that, while the storm impacted many in the city and surrounding areas, it has learned the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center has power and that the rest of downtown is coming back online, as well. “We are hoping everyone in the state of Louisiana is as safe and healthy as possible, given the circumstances,” NAEC said. The convention and expo will be held October 4-7 at the Convention Center. For more information, visit the convention website. Welcome to the Elevator World News Podcast. Today’s podcast news podcast is sponsored by elevatorbooks.com: www.elevatorbooks.com NAEC CONVENTION MOVED FROM ATLANTIC CITY TO NEW ORLEANS The National Association of Elevator Contractors (NAEC) announced on May 17 that its 72nd Annual Convention and Exposition has been moved from Atlantic City, New Jersey, to New Orleans. The dates have also been changed to October 4-7. NAEC Executive Director Rená Cozart observes the association has been in close contact with the New Jersey governor’s office and the Centers for Disease Control as event restrictions related to COVID-19 ease, but “the incremental openings are vague enough in nature that we cannot, in good conscience, continue registering and advising exhibitors when Atlantic City may not be up to full capacity for large group meetings.” NAEC President Hope Evans says the association has “a fantastic alternative in New Orleans,” which has hosted successful NAEC events in the past. The new venue is the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center, and the partner hotels are New Orleans Hilton Riverside, New Orleans Marriott and the Hampton Inn & Suites. NOWCRJ PRESS RELEASE: New Orleans, LA, January 11, 2019—Workers from across New Orleans will converge on the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center on Monday to declare a national emergency over President Trump’s war against workers, communities of color, immigrants, women and the LGBTQ community. The announcement coincides with President Trump’s appearance at the American Farm Bureau Federation’s annual convention and comes as President Trump’s shutdown over the border wall is forcing hundreds of thousands of federal workers to struggle with how to provide for their families. President Trump suggested on Thursday that he may upend the democratic process and constitutional norms to raid disaster relief funding, including money budgeted for Louisiana infrastructure projects intended to protect against hurricanes. The irony of cutting disaster prevention funding to pay for a manufactured crisis on the southern border is not lost on immigrant reconstruction workers who face the threat of deportation from Trump’s anti-immigrant vendetta, Black New Orleanians watching a federal erosion of police oversight 13 years after the Danziger Bridge, or poor New Orleanians still unable to afford to return to New Orleans even as Trump cuts taxes for corporations and the rich. The declaration is being organized by the New Orleans Workers’ Center for Racial Justice and the New Orleans People’s Assembly. Workers who helped rebuild New Orleans and who bore the impact of the government’s catastrophic response after Hurricane Katrina will give testimony on how Trump’s national disaster threatens their safety and economic security and will break out their clean up gear to remind the American public what happens when the response to a national disaster is negligent.

On Episode 27, we get must-see and must-eat recommendations from two folks who know the city well. First, American Libraries Associate Editor Terra Dankowski talks with David Slater, director of culinary development at famed New Orleans chef Emeril Lagasse's Homebase. David shares his favorite places to eat in the city and more. Next, American Libraries Associate Editor and Dewey Decibel host Phil Morehart talks with Shellie Lister, a librarian and public relations and community coordinator at St. Tammany Parish Library. St. Tammany Parish produces an excellent podcast on New Orleans culture and literacy. They discuss the city’s literary landmarks as well as some off-the-beaten path places in New Orleans.
