When you ask most professional brewers about what they do the most, the vast majority will answer cleaning. Despite this fact, during my many years of working with breweries of all sizes I frequently come across the phenomena where a baseline of clean for some brewers reveals that they have only ever known a dirty tank or other equipment as their baseline and call it clean. But if we have never seen the equipment or tank truly clean, how do we establish a true baseline? How do we define what clean is? When and how do we know our equipment is truly clean? How do we identify the first indications that our equipment is not clean? What should we consider before problems develop? What are the possible implications if we ignore the problems or simply do not have the expertise or training to identify them? This presentation will answer those questions and more.Born and raised in Cologne, Germany, Dirk graduated in Cologne with a degree in business administration. Netsafe Chief Online Safety Officer Sean Lyons says Meta still needs to be pushed to do more to shut down scams. Instagram has made some widespread platform changes to make things safer for teen users. Accounts made by under-18s will be made private by default and notifications won't appear from 10pm to 7am. Instagram is also introducing more adult supervision tools - including letting parents see accounts their teen has recently messaged. Netsafe Chief Online Safety officer Sean Lyons says it's a good step. "It doesn't fix all the problems, but what I think we're starting to see is movement towards giving more protection by default to young people." It's hoped the first ever national swimming strategy, which has just been published, will reverse drowning trends in Clare and across the country. The new government plan will aim to provide everyone with an opportunity to swim, with a view to improving general water safety awareness and developing elite athletes. Among the key pillars of the strategy are upgrading of local facilities and the creation of a €500,000 fund to hire swim activators to work within local authority areas. Clare Water Safety Officer Clare McGrath insists, if implemented correctly, the programme will save lives in the future.

In the wake of the tragic Uvalde school shooting in 2022, Texas communities are still reeling. The wounds of the past were freshened when news emerged of a potential subsequent threat. Nathan Cruz, a 17-year-old relative of the previous gunman, Salvador Ramos, was apprehended on charges of planning a similarly heinous act. The heartbreaking event from last year witnessed the loss of 21 innocent lives at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde. Salvador Ramos, the perpetrator of the attack, had used an AR-15-style weapon to fatally injure 19 students and two dedicated educators on May 24, 2022. The community, and indeed the nation, mourned this senseless act of violence, remembering the victims with flowers, candles, and a memorial erected outside the school. Fast-forward to the present day, and the shadow of the tragedy still lingers. Recent reports indicate that Nathan Cruz, Ramos' own cousin, harbored intentions of mirroring his relative's atrocious crime. The evidence against Cruz, obtained by WOAI, includes a chilling confession to his sister, where he expressed the desire to "do the same thing" as Ramos. Concerned about her brother's intentions, she confided in their mother, who later overheard Cruz attempting to illegally acquire an AR-15, the same style of weapon used in the Uvalde massacre. In an era where vigilance is paramount, the quick action of Cruz's mother, who alerted the police about her son's alarming intentions, likely averted another catastrophe. Sgt. Washington Moscoso of the San Antonio Police Department expressed his relief to The New York Times, stating, “God knows what could have happened. Because she did the right thing, this individual has been arrested.” Adding to the community's unease is the revelation that Cruz resides directly opposite a San Antonio elementary school. KSAT brought to light the geographical proximity, deepening concerns over what might have been had his mother not intervened. In response to the emerging situation, Edgewood ISD released a statement highlighting its unwavering commitment to safety: "Edgewood ISD has been made aware a teenager is now in police custody accused of making a threat against a school on the city's west side. Edgewood ISD is dedicated to the safety and well-being of all students, faculty, and staff. Each campus benefits from an assigned Safety Officer. We encourage everyone to remain vigilant and to promptly report any suspicious activity. Our message remains clear: if you see something, say something." Court documents reveal that Nathan Cruz is facing a felony charge for threatening a public place with terroristic intent. Additionally, he is charged with a misdemeanor for threats made against a family member. The repercussions of the Uvalde tragedy emphasize the importance of community vigilance, open communication, and the need for preemptive action. It serves as a somber reminder that, while the act may end, the ripples continue to affect those connected to the perpetrator and the broader community. Efforts toward understanding, healing, and prevention are crucial in the wake of such events. For comprehensive coverage on this and related stories, visit the original article at Star-Telegram. DTFF: The Volunteer Firefighter Podcast - Down To Fight Fire
E239 - Structure Fire, Multi Patients with heavy exposures This week we break down a recent structure fire with reports of patients inside. Ash was IC, Scott assisted as initial attack and then slotted into the Safety Officer role , and Todd got to come up as support when a neighbouring structure was threatened. Hear our views, how it went down and the challenges faced WHO WE ARE As a group of Rural Volunteer Firefighters, our Fire Department has built our firefighter training from both old and new tactics in the fire service and adapted them to fit the realities of equipment, manpower, and costs around what our community requires. WHAT WE DO We create video, audio and written word content to share these training and tactics methods with our Brothers and Sisters in our extended fire families, and to showcase to those that may be interested in becoming firefighters the fun you can have and the amazing skills and abilities you get to learn, whilst keeping the lives of the people around you safe! WHY WE SHARE Firefighters are problem solvers whose role requires them to be on their best day whilst others are having their worst day, and while we do not claim to be perfect we are willing to put our lives on the line to try. It's during the trying that we continue to develop the mindset, tactics, and training that allow us to be effective, safe and successful where it's needed the most, and by sharing our experiences we hope that it may help other Fire Departments in creating what works for them to help bring everyone home safe. Today I'm honored to have Sean Liscom, author of The Ranch book series available on Amazon. I've been reading the entire series and thought I might as well ask if the author would be on the show, and surprisingly, he said yes! So today, we have a great chat about the origins of The Ranch series, his writing method, life living off the grid, and the art of living a life of being prepared. Sean has a background in wild land firefighting, and we learn all of the lessons that come from a life of unpredictability. IG @jasonwsterling Sean's Bio: I was born in October of 1970 in California but have lived in northern Nevada since 1977. At an early age, I was bitten by the Fireman bug. In the spring of 1988 I joined the local volunteer fire department. I served in several different capacities from Firefighter I, EMT-B, Engine Operator, Safety Officer, Training Officer, Engine Captain and Type III Incident Commander. I retired on 01-01-11. During the summer of 1989, I found myself joining up with a government contracted engine strike team. I also served with them in different positions that mirrored my volunteer service with the exception of becoming a Strike Team Leader. With 5 Type III engines, two water tenders and two service vehicles under my control, I had to quickly learn how to deal with the "human" element. I must have done okay because they kept asking me to come back to work for them. That lasted until the season ended in 1999. In September of 2016, I sat down with my laptop and started writing. The story that unfolded in my head and on the computer screen is what I submitted to Amazon a year later. Of course, there were re-writes and the inevitable writers block, but I managed to work my way through that with the help and support of my beautiful wife, Denise. Even when she was struggling with the hellish side-effects of chemotherapy, she stood strong and let me bounce ideas off of her. 0:00 - Start 1:30 - Intro to book 3:00 - Craziest thing he saw 11:00 -“I write for a living” 16:30 - How much of the story is autobiographical? 24:41 - How do you outline a story? 33:30 - What inspires your characters? 36:00 - Political themes 44:00 - A Simple cut will kill you 52:00 - What are some realizations in life 54:30 -Composting toilets 1:00:00 - Inspiration for the world building 1:07:30 - The entrepreneurial journey 1:11:20 - Freeform writing ------------ Quickly- I'm Scott Groves - Husband, Father, Loan Officer, Coach, Author, Podcaster, and Blue Belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.
