Mystic Bowie, the charismatic frontman of the Talking Dreads and a notable figure in the musical landscape, engaged in a profound dialogue with Joe Kelley on the Musicians Reveal podcast. The conversation traversed various aspects of Bowie's illustrious career, commencing with the serendipitous acquisition of his first guitar, a gift from none other than Jerry Garcia of the Grateful Dead. This anecdote served as a poignant reminder of the interconnectedness of musicians and the unexpected paths that lead to creative fruition. Bowie recounted his journey from the vibrant music scene in Jamaica to his collaborations with the likes of Chris Frantz and Tina Weymouth of Tom Tom Club, emphasizing the collaborative spirit that underpins his work. As the discussion progressed, Bowie elaborated on the inception of the Talking Dreads project, a creative endeavor that reimagines the music of the Talking Heads through a reggae lens. His passion for reggae and his desire to honor the legacy of the Talking Heads culminated in this innovative fusion, which has been well-received by audiences across the globe. Bowie expressed gratitude for the support of his musical peers, including Seymour Stein, who granted his blessing for the project, further solidifying the bond between artists across generations. This episode not only showcases Bowie's musical prowess but also highlights his commitment to philanthropy and community engagement in Jamaica, demonstrating that his artistry transcends mere entertainment and embodies a deeper social responsibility. The conversation culminated in a reflection on the essence of music as a unifying force, with Bowie advocating for a return to the collaborative ethos that characterized the music scene of his youth. He lamented the current state of the industry, where competition often overshadows camaraderie, and urged emerging artists to draw inspiration from established musicians. This notion of mentorship and mutual respect underscores the importance of community in the arts. The episode closes with a sense of hope, as Bowie prepares for upcoming performances, including a New Year's Eve celebration in Saratoga Springs, where he promises to deliver an unforgettable experience that melds the rhythmic pulse of reggae with the artistic legacy of iconic bands.Links referenced in this episode:talkingdreads.com
Jano Rix is on Roadcase this week, and I couldn't be more psyched to share this amazing interview. Jano has been behind the drum kit in The Wood Brothers now for almost 15 years, and his magical drumming, percussion, keys, and vocals add that critical third dimension to the trio's wonderful musical exploration that is at the heart of The Wood Brothers unique sound. The band's sonic journey continues with their latest album Puff of Smoke, which came out August 1. Jano comes by his musical talent quite honestly — his Dad, noted drummer Luther Rix, had Jano playing drums by the time he was only 3 or 4 years old. And now, Jano and his Dad have together released an album, Legacy Vol. 1, with their new collab project, RIX. It's a delightful album with the heartwarming story of a father, a son, and their lifelong shared musical connection. For Jano, this album was a long time coming.Jano also talks to me about how the hand of fate brought him to The Wood Brothers and we discuss what it means to join the band that he once adored as a fan — how discovering their music was a true revelation for him. And he describes to me that when he got the call from Oliver, he had truly found his musical home. It's a serendipitous and fateful path that led Jano to this current place, and it's an amazing story. Jano is kind, funny, and full of wonderful surprises, and you won't want to miss this epic and unique story!! ================================Episode Chapters:Episode Intro with Josh RosenbergIntroduction to Jano RixMusical Influences and Early LifeJoining The Wood BrothersThe Creation of the ShittarTouring ExperiencesCollaborations and New ProjectsThe Creative ProcessLive Performances and Their ImpactThe Evolution of The Wood BrothersConclusion and Reflections================================For The Wood Brothers tour dates, click hereFor more information on Roadcase:https://linktr.ee/roadcasepod and https://www.roadcasepod.comOr contact Roadcase by email: info@roadcasepod.comRoadcase theme music: "Eugene (Instrumental)" by Waltzer

Brian Crain is an American pianist and composer whose music has been streamed more than six billion times. Born in Hollywood, Brian grew up creating melodies by ear—often whistling tunes he made up on the spot. His father was an award-winning educational filmmaker, and Brian spent part of his youth helping with film projects, which sparked his interest in writing music for pictures. Though he briefly took piano lessons as a child, he mostly taught himself by improvising at the family piano between baseball practices—balancing dreams of being a professional ballplayer with a growing pull toward composition. In his early twenties, Brian began writing music for films alongside his father, before releasing his own solo piano albums. His breakout came with Morning Light, leading to a career of more than twenty albums that blend contemporary classical, cinematic storytelling, and minimalist elegance. His duet albums Piano and Cello Duet and Piano and Violin Duet have inspired musicians around the world to perform his work, and pieces like Butterfly Waltz and Song for Sienna have become global favorites. Brian's music has been featured in films, commercials, and broadcasts internationally, and in 2013 he was named Honorary Cultural Ambassador for Yeongwol, South Korea. Today, he continues to compose and perform music rooted in curiosity, emotional resonance, and the simple joy of creating. You can find his music on any streaming app, or visit his website at briancrain.com

In this episode, I'm joined by John Mailander, a fearless and lyrical fiddler/violinist whose work bridges bluegrass, jazz, ambient improvisation, and songcraft. We trace his path from San Diego to Berklee (where he studied American Roots with mentor Darol Anger) to Nashville, where he found a close-knit community that's as experimental as it is supportive. John discusses the city's “weirdo music” scene, ambient nights, free improvisation, and oddball collaborations, and how that energy coexists alongside the touring calendar. We dig into his life-changing chair with Bruce Hornsby: the no-setlist ethos, learning the “top 80” deep-cut originals, living on the edge together, and the night Bruce rearranged the stage so John could stand next to John Scofield, then kept tossing them intertwined solos all evening. John shares recent runs with Sam Grisman (with hero Peter Rowan onboard), producing and recording more from Nashville, and the origin of his own band Forecast, a genre-porous collective inspired by Bill Frisell, Brian Blade Fellowship, Pat Metheny/Brad Mehldau, and Joni Mitchell. We talk through the new record Let the World In: how residency nights at Dee's in Madison shaped the tunes, why the drums sound so alive, and why he welcomes rotating lineups to hear the same music through new lenses. Teaching and mentorship thread through the conversation: passing on what was given to him (formally and backstage between songs), honoring influences like Matt Mundy (ARU/Bruce Hampton), and why the point isn't “pushing boundaries” as a goal but playing honestly enough that the music pushes itself. It's a generous, grounded conversation about trust, curiosity, and letting the music lead.To learn more about John, visit his website. With musical samples threaded throughout the conversation, listeners are invited to experience the emotional resonance and mythic scale of Arkenstone's compositions. In this episode of The Bandwich Tapes, I reconnect (30 years later!) with bassist and singer Trish Imbrogno. We apparently shared the same summers at the Chautauqua Institution as teens, then each took “classical first” career paths before veering joyfully into other sounds. Trish tells the story of leaving a busy classical schedule to become a bluegrass/Americana bassist and bandleader and why she's never looked back. We explore topics such as discipline, groove, ensemble trust, the debate between purists and progress, and the thrill (and terror) of starting over in a new musical language. We also preview her debut EP Bluegrass Love Songs, Vol. 1 (out Nov 7) and the monster lineup that played on it.To learn more about Trish, visit her website. What happens when a Christian stops voting and starts questioning everything? Craig sits down with musician Ancap Tim to trace his journey from a Republican poster child (yes, he really had George W. Bush on his birthday cake) to a Christian challenging empire through music, faith, and bold conversation. Tim shares how his journey through politics, theology, and touring Christian musician led him to a deeper understanding of what it means to follow Christ alone: no party, no empire, no king but The King. They talk about: How faith and political ideology collide and sometimes collapse The moment Tim stopped playing the political game Why voluntarism and Christianity go hand in hand What inspired his latest album The State's Just a Mafia Using music as a tool for truth, protest, and worship The role of small churches, AI, and hopeful universalism in shaping his worldview This conversation moves from heavy to hopeful, with honest reflections on war, government, discipleship, and how modern politics often feels more like pro wrestling than public service. Whether you're deep into Christian anarchism or just starting to question what you've always believed, this episode offers a refreshing mix of conviction, creativity, and clarity.

There's something about music that cuts deeper than words alone. A single lyric, a familiar melody, or even the rhythm of a beat can stir memories we thought were long forgotten and awaken parts of ourselves we may have buried. It reminds us of who we were before the chaos, before the pain, before substances clouded our vision. Pursuing our favorite hobbies before substance use can be a lifeline back to our core, a way of reclaiming the truest version of ourselves. Listen in as our guest this week shares how he turned his lifelong passion into purpose and found a way back home to himself. Skyler Ray was born on November 28, 1990, in San Jose, California. He grew up in foster homes and spent multiple years homeless—going from being locked up to sleeping on the sidewalks of downtown Portland. His music is deeply rooted in his life experiences, including addiction, incarceration, and homelessness. He is a firm believer in spreading hope and giving back to the community he once helped destroy. Since being released from prison on November 30, 2018, Skyler has refocused on his music and is determined to share his message with the world. He continues to live in Portland, Oregon, and remains clean and sober. In this conversation, Jamie Demeris and Skyler Ray discuss what it really takes to rebuild a life after addiction. Together, they explore the mindset shifts that turn relapse into resilience, why consistency and small steps matter more than giant leaps, and how reconnecting with your passions can anchor you in sobriety. Skyler shares how music became both his therapy and his message, and why vulnerability and self-respect are the foundation of lasting recovery. Whether you're in recovery, supporting a loved one, or just searching for hope, this conversation will remind you that transformation is always possible. Topics Discussed: The importance of continuously working on yourself Why relapse isn't a step back and how you can stand up stronger Pursuing your passions and who you are at your core in sobriety Why small, consistent steps make the most impact Reconnecting with your why & remembering who you were before substances Learning to love and respect yourself — CHAPTERS: 0:00 Introduction to Positive Recovery MD 01:10 Meet Skylar Ray: From Addiction to Recovery 02:16 Skylar's Battle with Addiction 03:56 Turning Point: Embracing Music and Sobriety 12:50 The Road to Recovery Tour 19:35 Overcoming Disbelief and Embracing Change 22:54 Climbing the Corporate Ladder 23:43 A Humbling Demotion 24:17 Prison Reflections and Personal Growth 26:22 Musical Journey and Personal Transformation 29:14 The Power of Sound and Recovery 33:23 Chasing Dreams and Overcoming Challenges 40:33 Tour Dates and Final Thoughts — Connect with Skyler Ray: Road to Recovery Tour: https://www.officialskylerray.com/road-to-recovery-tour Website: www.officialskylerray.com Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/therealSkylerRay — Connect with PRC on Social: IG: https://www.instagram.com/positiverecoverycenters FB: https://www.facebook.com/PositiveRecoveryCenters TT: https://www.tiktok.com/@positiverecoverycenter LI: https://www.linkedin.com/company/positiverecoverycenters YT: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC4JcDF1gjlYch4V4iBbCgZg Want even more expert insights and support on the recovery journey?
