At the heart of the aged care sector is the experiences and quality of life of older Australians. Unique to this sector is that governing bodies and leaders in the sector all share a common goal, to deliver high quality, safe and sustainable care. This podcast, will feature the voice of aged care consumers and advocates to hear about what person centred care really means and how governing bodies can lead organisations that embed the consumer at the heart of systems and processes. This episode features Danijela Hlis who is a vocal advocate for the lives and care of people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds in aged care. The Federation of Ethnic Communities Council of Australia says the COVID-19 pandemic shows people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds need better health outcomes. The Ethnic Communities’ Council of Victoria has called for the development of a new Multicultural Strategy for Victoria, recommending that more than $150 million be allocated in May’s State Budget as part of a broader extension of the Victorian Government’s approach to engagement with migrant and refugee communities. ECCV Chairperson Eddie Micallef said the development of a new Multicultural Strategy was critical to ensuring government policies and services are inclusive, equitable and responsive to migrant and refugee communities. “The past year has been difficult for the whole community, but the challenges faced by migrant and refugee communities have been building over a longer period of time,” Mr Micallef said. Making a strong case for bringing Australia’s temporary migrants under the government’s safety net, the Federation of Ethnic Communities Council of Australia (FECCA) is pushing for JobKeeper and JobSeeker programmes to be extended to such people who have lost jobs due to the coronavirus.
The Ethnic Communities’ Council of Victoria (ECCV) has called on the federal government to reconsider its coronavirus response for temporary migrants. ECCV Chairperson Eddie Micallef, believes the humanitarian and economic costs associated with excluding people on temporary visas in Australia is a serious concern. “The threat to people who are now out of work and can no longer support themselves without any safety net is immediate. ECCV has received reports that migrant communities on temporary visas are in crisis, with the sad recent case of one international student taking their own life as a result of their circumstances,” said Mr Micallef.
