In this fifth episode exploring what it means to be second or third-generation Italian in New Zealand, Carla Rotondo talks to Salvatore Gargiulo, a retired school principal from Nelson. His grandfather came to NZ from Capo di Sorrento in 1920, joining other Italians he knew, in what is known as chain migration. Initially he worked in the fishing industry, and once settled he sent for his wife and his two older children. Salvatore's father, Vincenzo, was born in NZ in 1923, he went to war as NZ soldier in Italy part of the Allied Forces, fighting against the Italian regime. Returned from war he married a NZ woman and Salvatore was born in 1951. During Covid Salvatore spend many hours reading his father‘s war dairies to compile a book called Getting to know dad from his dairies. The war experience was very distressful for Vince and he never went back to Italy. Tuttavia, i capi Māori avevano preoccupazioni profonde.

In this fourth episode of a series exploring what it means to be second or third-generation Italian in New Zealand, Carla Rotondo talks to Yolanda Persico. Yolanda grew up in Nelson in The Wood, a neighbourhood densely populated by the Italians. Most Italians arrived in Nelson by chain migration from Massalubrense, including her paternal grandfather Giacomo, who became a naturalised citizen and returned to Italy to marry Yolanda's grandmother. Yolanda's mother emigrated as a girl with her Gargiulo family; they also settled in The Wood and worked, like most of the Italian community, in the tomato growing production. She is telling the stories of the Italian families she grew up with in The Wood, a very close-knit community of people's homes and glass houses. Yolanda has contributed to the book ”Pasta, Prayer & Promise” the ultimate book about the Italians immigrants in Nelson. Stories from the 1950's and during World War II, when Italy was an enemy to the Allied Forces and some Italians were classified as enemy aliens and interned on Somes Island in the Wellington Harbour. His Italian side originated from his nonno, grandfather, who was born in Piano di Sorrento and settled in Whangārei. The Cocurullo family mixed with a small group of Italians, particularly with Dora and Vincenzo Russo, who owned a café and had emigrated to NZ encouraged by Vince's grandfather. Vince has visited Piano di Sorrento and his relatives there, and even though in his growing up in NZ the Italian influence was limited, he discovered that he had lots of mannerisms and non-verbal communication similar to his Sorrentina family. Michael grew up in Herne Bay, the youngest of five children, in a house with terrazzo floors and murals built by his father, that was also the center of the Italian and expat community of that time.

The latest Census revealed we're more culturally diverse as a nation than ever before. So, we're asking the question: ‘should the next census include more questions about ethnicity?' We dive into the pros and cons, which are more complicated than you might think. Historian Dr Amrita Malhi, fellow at the Coral Bell School of Asia Pacific Affairs at ANU; and Mohammed Al-Khafaji, CEO of the Federation of Ethnic Communities' Councils of Australia join us to hash it out. Last month the federal government announced it will begin collecting more specific ethnicity data in the next Census. Is it the right move? Or could it lead to tension if we create what's been dubbed a ‘racial hierarchy'.
