Sky's recent work Lives Well Lived focussed on a cohort of 40 inspiring individuals over the age of 75 and how they're challenging the assumptions and stereotypes of later life. We had a lovely chat with Sky about her film, and there's some really warm moments in here about how sensitive and inquisitive conversations with our loved ones allow us all to reflect and learn from their experiences. As you heard at the start of this episode, this will be our last regular release for Season 3. There is one more Who Cares episode for the season, with Daniella Greenwood and Maurie Voisey Barlin, that you can catch this Friday. Judy Cornish is the creator of the DAWN method - and she joins us for a fun and fascinating conversation about how she came into dementia care with no prior experience and developed a way to embrace the strengths and avoid weaknesses of people living with dementia. Judy's model leverages the highly developed intuitive skills of people living with dementia and encourage carers and families to communicate in ways that don't depend on the often-diminishing rational skills, which she explains in quite a bit more detail throughout the episode. If you want to learn more about Judy's wonderful work after this interview which I think you will, she has two books available online The Dementia Handbook and Dementia with Dignity that you can check out. On today's episode we're delving into something we've been hearing a lot about on the show recently - human rights, and how despite our best intentions, the way we deliver care for older adults can ultimately result in infringements on their human rights. Our guest is leading the push for the recognition of the rights of older people, both in Australia and to the United Nations. Emeritus Professor Andrew Byrnes from the University of New South Wales joins us to talk about the importance of human rights, why we need a specific international treaty on the rights of older adults, and how it would positively impact carers and care recipients around the world. On today's episode we're looking at something that everybody goes through but is especially important to those in later life - periods of transition. Whether it's kids leaving home, the loss of a loved one or when people begin to engage with aged care services, they're usually going through some sort of transition - and understanding more about what these periods look like, and how to navigate them is helpful not just for ourselves but also for the people we care for. Helping us unpack this intricate topic is Jeff Hamaoui. Jeff, along with Chip Conley are Founding Partners of MEA, which was formerly known as the Modern Elder Academy. Jeff is currently Head of Education and with the team at MEA, helps adults in their midlife and beyond prepare for the next stage of their lives, by exploring ideas of transitions, purpose and much more - you can have a look at their work in Australia at www.meax.com.au As always you can hear Daniella and Maurie's take and thoughts about these ideas in their show Who Cares? which is released every Friday. Today's episode is an interesting conversation that looks at how we staff residential care facilities, and why consistently pairing the same carers with the same residents will lead to better outcomes for all. Joining us is friend of the show and co-host of our Friday Who Cares show, Daniella Greenwood. Daniella has worked extensively in the space of consistent assignment for the last 10 years after developing and implementing the model with Arcare in 2012. She now consults with other aged care providers on why it's a more humane and dignified model for residents, that has significant operational and financial benefits for providers. In this episode you'll hear her explain the process of implementing the model, and the disproportionately large benefits for making the switch. **** Quick note: no WhoCares? episode this Friday but will be back next week! **** The Aged Care Enrichment Podcast is brought to you by SilVR Adventures ⬇️

Natasha is a research fellow in the school of psychology at UNSW and her work focuses on cultural attitudes to ageing, stereotypes and self-perceptions. Our conversation really focussed on how our self-perceptions of our own ageing can have long term health effects, and how things like media portrayal, cultural values and intergenerational environments can reduce or exacerbate these effects. We also briefly spoke about an exciting Virtual Reality based project Natasha was part of that harnessed the immersive nature of the technology to deliver an emotionally affecting experience on the subject of dementia. As always you can hear Daniella and Maurie's take and thoughts about these ideas in their show Who Cares? which is released every Friday. LHA are the peak body focusing on health services for LGBTIQ+ Australians and they tackle areas like mental health, disability, palliative and also their aged care project Silver Rainbow, which you can find out more about on their website: https://www.lgbtiqhealth.org.au/ This can be an uncomfortable topic for some people, and Rob does a great job of explaining what all the letters mean, what are some common experiences for LGBTI people and how we can be sensitive and supportive of people's gender and sexuality even if it all feels a bit unfamiliar. As always you can hear Daniella and Maurie's take and thoughts about these ideas in their show Who Cares? which is released every Friday. Our guest is Professor Pankaj Sah the Director of the Queensland Brain Institute or QBI, from University of Queensland. Pankaj has done a lot of research into an area of the brain called the amygdala, which plays a role in consolidating new memories and in encoding them with emotional content. There's a lot of interesting ideas in this episode and Pankaj has a great way of simplifying very complicated science. As always you can hear Daniella and Maurie's take and thoughts about these ideas in their show Who Cares? which is released every Friday. Today, we're talking about a complicated and difficult topic that many people aren't sure how to talk about - us included. We're having a look at sex and sexuality in residential care, and trying to understand what's acceptable, what's not and where's the line. Helping us this tricky terrain is Dr. Catherine Barrett who's founded the organisations Celebrate Ageing, the Opal Institute and Ready to Listen - which focus on building and promoting respect for older adults and includes a lot of work on the sexual rights and responsibilities of older people. Catherine has released some great and instructive work including the declaration of sexual rights for older adults, and her book Addressing The Sexual Rights of Older People which she published with Sharron Hinchliff. As always you can hear Daniella and Maurie's take and thoughts about these ideas in their show Who Cares? which is released every Friday. Today's guest on the podcast is Michael Rossato-Bennett, an American documentary filmmaker best known for his film, Alive Inside. Alive Inside followed the company Music and Memory as it helped older adults in care reconnect to themselves and reawaken with the help of their favourite music. You might remember the scene with Henry's whole face and body language lighting up when he hears songs from his youth – that clip has had over 7 million views on YouTube! Despite the background in music and filmmaking, this conversation with Michael is about human connection, and what underpins or should underpin any care that we seek to provide for people, no matter their age. Michael has a great talent at converting his ideas into films and conveying his thoughts into words, and we're sure you will enjoy listening to this discussion. As always you can hear Daniella and Maurie's take and thoughts about these ideas in their show Who Cares? which is released every Friday. The Hidden Gems Podcast (The Best Short Stories You've Never Heard)
"It was quite by accident I discovered this incredible invasion of Earth by lifeforms from another planet." So begins this gem of a short story written by the master of sci-fi dystopian fiction, Philip K. Dick. Philip K.Dick was born in 1928 in Chicago, but he grew up in the San Francisco Bay area. Throughout his career, he wrote 33 novels and 121 short stories and he had almost no commercial success during his lifetime. In the science fiction world, he was considered a genius, but he struggled to make a living with low-paying science fiction publishers. He was so broke at one point that the writer Robert A. Heinlein, who was a great admirer of his work, lent him money to bail him out of IRS troubles and he purchased him an electric typewriter. The writer's life was deeply troubled: he married five times, had a lifetime of financial stress, struggled with substance addiction, severe depression, including a failed suicide attempt and he had a series of mystical experiences where he believed that he had been taken over by the spirit of the prophet of Elijah. He died in 1982 after suffering a stroke and his greatest successes then occurred posthumously. Films based on his fiction include Blade Runner, Minority Report, A Scanner Darkly, The Adjustment Bureau, and The Man in the High Castle. I personally think that Philip K. Dick was a writer who was ahead of his time. He was writing about alternate realities, drug abuse, authoritarian governments, and the true nature of a person's identity, which are all very modern and relevant subjects. John Bell is our narrator and he is also the writer, producer, and actor on the award-winning "Bell's in the Batfry" podcast, which can be found at http://thebatfry.libsyn.com/We are always looking forward to discovering our next writer, so if you are interested in contributing, please send us your short story of fewer than 5,000 words to cathy@widowmakerindustries.comMy name is Cathy McCarthy and I write under the name of C. Populations are ageing, people are living longer than ever before, and traditional residential care options are not going to be the right fit for an increasing number of people. We need new ideas that fill the gaps between living comfortably in your own home, and the high care needs of a residential facility. Today's episode features two new and different solutions to this problem that focus on social engagement, financial stability and above all else, options. Our first guest is Riley Gibson, the President of Silvernest, an American company helping older adults rent out a spare room in their home to a would-be tenant of all ages. The company is helping to bring social engagement and community to isolated older adults as well as reducing financial burdens of homeowners. You can find out more about Silvernest here: https://www.silvernest.com/ In Part 2 we spoke to Jake Rothstein from UpsideHoM, a Florida based company that is helping older adults move out of their empty nest into multigenerational apartment buildings, where they can access community events, care services and ultimately more independence and helping older adults connect to an engaged multigenerational community. You can find out more about UpsideHoM here: https://www.upsidehom.com/ Also, if you haven't been tuning in regularly you might've missed our new show on Friday's called Who Cares? Where our friends Daniella and Moz pick apart some of the challenges to delivering great care and will be talking about this episode and the thought-provoking issues raised. On today's episode we have a friend returning to the show, quick on the back of our recent Christmas catch-up, it's music therapist and Founder of Attuned Health, Hayley Antipas. In this conversation we really wanted to know…what is music therapy? Ash has played music for over 20 years and until this conversation, didn't really get it, but Hayley does a fantastic job at explaining its clinical foundation and why it's so much more than just entertainment. Also, if you haven't been tuning in regularly you might've missed our new show on Friday's called Who Cares? Welcome to another episode of the podcast, today is all about how ageing affects women's bodies slightly differently to those of men, and what the research shows women can do to reduce the risks of age related illnesses. We spoke to Professor Cassandra Szoeke, the Director of the Healthy Ageing Project in the Centre for Medical Research at the University of Melbourne, and she has been leading Australia's longest running study of women's health - the Women's Healthy Ageing Project. Armed with thirty years of research, she has written her new book Secret's of Women's Healthy Ageing, which we'll discuss in this conversation, with a fun an interesting look at what women and men can do to keep their bodies or "machines" as Cassandra calls them, running smoothly for 100 years. Don't forget, on Friday we'll have an episode of Who Cares where Daniella and Maurie will be talking about this episode and the thought-provoking issues raised.
