What is going on at Farpoint Station? Will the Enterprise crew pass Q's test, or will the series end after this episode? Matthew and Ruthie do their best to solve these mysteries as they recap the second half of the first mission of the USS Enterprise, NCC1701-D.

We did it. We finally made it all the way through the first episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation. In this episode of the podcast we learn more reasons to hate Riker, we see first how bad Picard is at talking to children, and we finally uncover the mystery of Farpoint Station.
It’s an episode of firsts! We examine the first time the holodeck ever appears in a CANON episode of Star Trek, in the series premiere of The Next Generation, while also watching the first time a version of the holodeck appears in The Animated Series, where it’s called “The Rec Room.” We discuss holodeck bug reports, “Chekhov’s rock,” the undercelebrated genius of a “Kirk is a Jerk” shirt, and go over the history of the holodeck as a concept and execution. The Enterprise’s least important officers meet for the first time in Ten Forward and try to figure out whether to suck up to Picard or Riker, how to get a permission slip to go down to Farpoint Station, and how many Enterprises there are during a saucer separation. We encourage you to watch “Encounter at Farpoint” from Star Trek: The Next Generation Season 1, Episode 1 and “The Practical Joker” from Star Trek: The Animated Series Season 2, Episode 3! Dan Moren, three time novelist and guy who talks on the Internet a lot, joins Scott to discuss "Encounter at Farpoint" (TNG S1E1). Topics include Dan's new book (buy it!), how our beloved TNG friends changed over the course of 7 seasons, and if this episode was as bad as we remember it being, and the fact that Farpoint Station isn't a space station. Host Scott McNulty with Dan Moren.

Orion's Hounds. The Starship Titan under the command of William Riker begins its mission of exploration far beyond the boundaries of Federation space! In the largely-uncharted Gum Nebula, Riker and the crew of Titan encounter giant, space-dwelling lifeforms that have been seen only once before: during the mission to Farpoint Station that began the voyages of the Enterprise-D. But these majestic lifeforms are being hunted, and Riker feels the need to intervene. However, all may not be as it seems. In this episode of Literary Treks, hosts Dan Gunther and Bruce Gibson discuss the Orion's Hounds. We talk about the beginning of Titan's true mission, the mysterious "star-jellies," Riker's decision to get involved, the other cozmozoans that make up the Gum Nebula ecosystem, the difficulty in changing one's way of life and adapting to new circumstances, some stand-out characters in the novel, and wrap up with our final thoughts and ratings. In the news segment, we talk about the recently-announced reprinting of the novelization of Star Trek: The Motion Picture in honor of the film's 40th anniversary. We also review the fifth issue in IDW's Star Trek: The Q Conflict miniseries and respond to Babel Conference feedback for Literary Treks 271: To Thine Own Self Be True. And so we come to the next phase of the program, as we hit TNG and its first episode, "Encounter at Farpoint"! The groundwork for what will become, for many, the most beloved "Trek" series is laid here, as Captain Picard assembles his staff and has his first encounter with the enigmatic Q! The powerful alien has decided to put humanity on trial via a mysterious test, which has something to do with the "Enterprise"-D's inaugural mission to Farpoint Station... Also this week: we try to have a serious discussion about gender, Jake's first outro, and the Watusi. Timestamps: synopses: 1:15; Encounter at Farpoint: 5:07
