In this episode of the podcast, Karri and Henrik analyze 8 creepy stories of the horror anthology film The Field Guide to Evil. Each film is from a different country and is supposed to tell a tale of dark folklore. Is that true though and how well do the films gel together in this anthology? Hosted by Karri Ojala and Henrik Telkki. Edited by Karri Ojala. The Flick Lab theme tune written and performed by Nick Grivell.
One monster is attracted to sin. Another wants to steal your baby while a third lives in your body, leaving you lifeless when it emerges from your mouth. Plus, a pair of brothers who really love feet get a fitting punishment from a creepy king who may serve burgers on the side. This week, the gang explores an ambitious anthology of global folk horror; some chapters work better than others but the collection is worth discussing. Also, surely you've seen at least one of the foreign horror movies dropping on streaming services this week. Motion Picture Terror Scale: Yes! At least one chapter is a 1 and another is a 5, but the film as a whole is hard to gauge. Quality: 3. Enjoyment: 4 (Marcus) / 3 (Melissa & Grady) Articles mentioned in this episode: "Interview: Producer Ant Timpson Talks the Horror Anthology THE FIELD GUIDE TO EVIL," by Jay Kay for Dread Central "Field Guide to Evil Filmmakers Detail the Process of Making a Horror Anthology," by Hunt for CineLinx
We turn our attention to 1992 and Bernard Rose's exquisite reimagining of a Clive Barker short story; “Candyman”. A film in which Ardelia Mapp from The Silence of the Lambs realises all her white friends are trouble; John Connor's foster dad is still a major piece of shit; and we all get seduced by the deep mellifluous voice of Lieutenant Commander Worf's little brother. Along the way we discuss “The Field Guide To Evil”, the “Fear Street” trilogy and “Haunted”. Watch (or re-watch) to avoid spoilers, and join us. It's hurricane season, and you know what that means - ALLIGATORS! This week we're mashing up the two things you DON'T move to Florida for with last year's action-packed horror thriller CRAWL! In our FIRST CHOP, Tim dusts off THE MUMMY (1959) and pays a visit to THE MAN WHO COULD CHEAT DEATH (1959). Brian curses the day he watched AMITYVILLE: THE CURSE. Then Tim takes a YUMMY trip with HELLBOY to check out THE FIELD GUIDE TO EVIL! Then we sit down with two people responsible for one of our favorite horror films of the year - the recently released THE BEACH HOUSE! Writer/director Jeffrey A. Brown and Producer Sofia Lin were kind enough to talk to us about the making of this fantastic film. Don't miss this one! And in our featured film, we take a look at Alexandra Aja's too-good-for-its-premise CRAWL! This movie took us both by surprise with its strong performances and thrilling sequences. It's a fun popcorn flick that delivers exactly what it needs to in its fast-paced running time. So grab a cold one and join us for another strangely aquatic-themed episode of CIVIL GORE!
Produced by Yair Rice, this RP movie roundup sees he and Jack reviewing a number of films, including three tonally reminiscent short films (Ari Aster's The Turtle's Head, Matthew Holness' A Gun For George and David Lynch's WHAT DID JACK DO?), horror anthology The Field Guide To Evil (2018), Michael Haneke's Cache (2005). Johnny Depp's The Brave (1997) and two films in which he stars - Bruce Robinson's The Rum Diary (2011) and City of Lies (Brad Furman, 2018), William Friedkin's Killer Joe (2011) and the new series of Better Call Saul! Even though not every film we discuss is that good, there should hopefully be enough to give our listeners at least one or two things to go off and watch.
Not many people can say their debut film played at the esteemed Cannes Film Festival, but this week’s guest Katrin Gebbe can. Katrin joins the boys to talk about her newest film “A Nocturnal Breath” which is a part of genre anthology “The Field Guide to Evil”. She also talks about the painfully true story that led her to make her first film, “Nothing Bad Can Happen”. In the intro, Randy doesn’t appreciate Clark and Russ’s bit for “Her Smell”. Clark talks about the latest Soderbergh iPhone film while Russ took a chance on “Midget Zombie Takeover”. Thanks again to Artsploitation for sponsoring this episode!
