This week the hosts discuss one of Josh's favorite movies, 1978's The Eyes of Laura Mars. From wiki: “Eyes of Laura Mars is a 1978 American neo-noir supernatural horror[3] thriller film directed by Irvin Kershner and starring Faye Dunaway, Tommy Lee Jones, Brad Dourif, René Auberjonois, and Raul Julia. It follows a New York City fashion photographer (Dunaway) who suddenly develops the clairvoyant ability to witness disturbing serial murders from the point of view of the killer. The screenplay was adapted (in collaboration with David Zelag Goodman) from a spec script titled Eyes, written by John Carpenter; it was Carpenter's first major studio film. H. B. Gilmour later wrote a novelization.”Also discussed: Hawaii, Sasquatch Sunset, Luca Guadagnino's Queer, My Own Private Idaho and the career of Gus Van Sant, American giallo, Jon Peters, Faye Dunaway, Shampoo, Personal Shopper, Blood and Black Lace, The September Issue, capelets and ponchos, Barfly, The Towering Inferno, Puzzle of a Downfall Child, Brian De Palma, NEXT WEEK: Morgiana (1972) Follow them across the internet: Bloodhaus:https://www.bloodhauspod.com/https://www.instagram.com/bloodhauspod/ Drusilla Adeline:https://www.sisterhydedesign.com/https://letterboxd.com/sisterhyde/https://www.instagram.com/sister__hyde/ Joshua Conkelhttps://www.joshuaconkel.com/https://www.instagram.com/joshua_conkel/https://letterboxd.com/JoshuaConkel/https://bsky.app/profile/joshuaconkel.bsky.social
Well, we've already reached the end of our PTA mini-series! This week we're joined by Ryan's partner and Altmania social media manager Lydia, as we discuss PTA's most recent film. We recorded this episode once already and the audio got messed up, so you all get to hear the second try in all of its glory. It turned out to be a much looser and more fun episode as we discuss burnt pizzas, being aimless 20-somethings, PTA's characters and their relationships, his "synthesis" era and solidifying himself as a Hollywood Elder Statesman. We also talk about Jon Peters, Sean Penn, being the son of Phillip Seymour Hoffman, all the strange and wacky faces that show up in this film. Thank you everyone who's followed us through this series, we'll come back and wrap it up with a little finale - and welcoming in our next director that we're gonna be focusing on for a little while. Canton was born to a Jewish family[3] in Queens, New York City, the son of Shirley and Arthur Canton, who worked in the film industry on marketing and publicity - including such films as Lawrence of Arabia. As a young adult, he met well-known movie personalities like Alfred Hitchcock, David Lean, and Doris Day when they visited the family's apartment.[4] After working in the mail room of Warner Bros. while studying at the University of California, Los Angeles,[5] Canton started working for 20th Century Fox and later had jobs with film director Franklin Schaffner, with producer Jon Peters, and in the 1970s as executive assistant to Mike Medavoy at United Artists.[4] PICTURE: By Sue Lukenbaugh, CC BY-SA 2.0, https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?curid=30653907

In 2020, less than a year after the launch of our inaugural podcast, we reached out to a number of iconic 1980s artists who would wanted to interview. And although at the time we did not have a track record of celebrity interviews, Cindy Morgan ("Caddyshack", "Tron") accepted our invitation. To our delight, she was more than just polite, she was generous, vulnerable, and honest. In our interview, we discuss the career path that landed the former radio host in "Caddyshack," a film in which she appeared opposite the biggest comedic actors of the era. Cindy also shares her experience with producer Jon Peters that derailed what seemed to be her path to stardom.Sadly, Cindy died last month at her home in Florida.Follow us on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/1980snow.Become a patron at www.patreon.com/1980snowFor more episodes of 1980s Now and information about the show visit www.1980snow.comEmail us at will@1980snow.com or kat@1980snow.com.

Dr. Jon Peters is a family doctor who practiced medicine for 35 years. However, before that, Jon was raised in a somewhat moderate home that balanced religion and secularity. In his late teens, he was introduced to the Evangelical Christian church through his then girlfriend, and later wife, where he attempted to live the devoutly religious lifestyle. He soon realized through his medical studies that so much of what he was being told in church didn't line up with what he was learning in school. In this episode, Jon describes his journey, both literal and figurative, through deconstruction, medicine, and marriage, as he spent the first 40 years of his life discovering who he really is, and what he truly believes. In this engaging episode, hosts Kindra Riber and Mick Smith delve into the captivating high conflict custody case of celebrities Alec Baldwin and Kim Basinger. Even within the glitz and glamour of Hollywood, divorce and parental alienation cast their dark shadows. Are celebrities spared from the complexities of divorce, custody battles, and parental alienation? Not even the Hollywood elite can escape the emotional turmoil associated with the custody industry. Ireland Baldwin, the eldest daughter of renowned actor Alec Baldwin and Kim Basinger, gained notoriety when her father left a voicemail at the tender age of 11, referring to her as a "rude, thoughtless, little pig."Born on October 23, 1995, Ireland has since embraced her identity as an animal lover and an influential figure, often sharing distressing text messages from her father about her relationships and potential pregnancy on social media. Although she played a younger version of her mother's character in the 2013 film "Grudge Match," her most prominent public relationship to date was with New York rapper Angel Haze, who identifies as pansexual and agender. Following their breakup in 2015, Ireland experienced emotional trauma, seeking solace in rehab as she navigated the darkness of anxiety. Subsequently, she developed a romantic interest in UFC fighter Ronda Rousey, attempting to woo her through Instagram. Presently, Ireland is in a relationship with surfer Noah Schweizer since December 2015.The strained relationship between Ireland and her father, Alec, is a lasting consequence of the infamous voicemail incident. Alec, who has fathered multiple children with his current wife Hilaria, acknowledges the deep impact it has had on their bond, stating that it is a scab that never heals due to constant external scrutiny. He laments that his daughter has been permanently hurt by the incident. What exactly did Alec say in the voicemail that caused such turmoil? He unleashed a barrage of criticism, stating that Ireland lacked intelligence and decency as a human being, dismissing her age and labeling her mother as thoughtless. The voicemail further revealed Alec's frustration and embarrassment, vowing not to make a fool of himself again.Amidst these challenges, signs of hope emerge for Ireland. The yoga enthusiast has found inspiration in her stepmother Hilaria, a yoga professional, as she engages in yoga practices during her vacation in the Bahamas. Ireland openly discusses her body image struggles in lengthy Instagram posts, encouraging herself to work harder. She candidly shares her guilt about eating pizza while posting a video of herself dancing in front of a mirror, wearing a bra and thong. Before achieving fame, Kim Basinger had a colorful dating history, including relationships with model Tim Saunders, photographer Dale Robinette, and football player Joe Namath. Following her marriage to makeup artist Ron Snyder-Britton on October 12, 1980, Basinger developed agoraphobia after experiencing a panic attack in a health-food store, confining herself to her home for six months. The couple divorced shortly before Christmas in 1989, and Basinger paid Snyder-Britton $9,000 per month in alimony for eight years. Snyder-Britton penned a memoir titled "Longer Than Forever" in 1998, recounting their time together and shedding light on Basinger's affair with Richard Gere, with whom she co-starred in films like "No Mercy" (1986) and "Final Analysis" (1992). During her initial divorce proceedings, Basinger had romantic involvements with hairdresser/producer Jon Peters and musician Prince, who contributed to the Batman soundtrack and produced her unreleased 1989 album "Hollywood Affair."

It is late 1998, Wild Wild West is well into its production, and things are not going well. The film has gone through a stunning roster of would-be stars - Tom Cruise, George Clooney, and Mel Gibson among them - before landing on Will Smith, who turned down the lead role in an obscure sci-fi picture called The Matrix from a couple of fringe indy filmmakers named the Wachowski siblings in order to sign on to director Barry Sonnenfeld's sci-fi/Western mashup adventure. The stars have little chemistry. None of them are happy with the material. Wild Wild West has burned through six writers and several reimaginings. Sonnenfeld - coming off a string of hits in The Addams Family, Get Shorty, and his previous team-up with Smith, Men in Black - sits at a table opposite producer Jon Peters. "I've lost control of the film," he tells Peters. "It has no story, no core, no charm - the jokes don't work and the tone is all over the place." Peters takes a deep breath. He looks down at the table and then up at Sonnenfeld. Suddenly, he slams his fist on the table, shoots up from his chair, and screams at his director. "DAMN IT! I don't care if it has no plot! I don't care if the actors hate it!! I don't care if it's miscast!!! I. ONLY. CARE. ABOUT. GIANT. METAL. SPIDERS. Get that spider onto the big screen. Nothing else matters!!" Peters takes another breath. He sits back down. He looks a startled Sonnenfeld right in the eye. "Nothing. Else. Matters." Wicky wicky wah wah. We're joined this week by Dan Cólon (@DanColon) and Mike Manzi (@the_mikestir), hosts of The Monsters That Made Us.
We get back to covering actual Worst Picture Winners with 1998's An Alan Smithee Film: Burn, Hollywood, Burn, winner at the 19th Annual Golden Raspberry Awards! You can tell how excited we were to talk about this one by how long we talk about whether Batman's a fascist in the opening. We break down what did and didn't work about the movie, marvel at how anyone could possible cast Harvey Weinstein in an on-screen role, dig into what went wrong with this film's bizarre soundtrack, lambast Joe Esterhaz's lazy writing while defending his Wookiee-like appearance, and try to grasp how a movie like this can be so bad that the director took an Alan Smithee credit himself unironically. We come up with film aliases for ourselves, Jack recounts a bathroom crime, and Joe struggles and fails to remember the title of Comedy Central's single-season adult animated series Kid Notorious about producer Robert Evans. Get comfy, enjoy the episode, and please let us know if you know anything about Michael Ovitz. We continue our odyssey into Development Hell to wrap up our dissection of Tim Burton's unmade Superman Lives! Having covered the origins of Jon Peters and the beginnings of this project through Kevin Smith's role in this story, we now focus in on Burton's vision for Nick Cage as the Man of Steel in a story of the ultimate outsider. We cover the cavalcade of wildly talented artists involved, the utter pain in the ass that Jon Peters was for basically everyone involved, the panic spiral Warner Bros found themselves in, and just how the death of Superman Lives led to Superman Returns -- including as much as we could stomach of the absolutely buckwild idea J. J. Abrams had that cost us a Batman vs. Superman film written by the guy who wrote Se7en. We also touch on Warner Bros current woes following their merger with Discovery, as it seems like they've learned nothing from their mistakes. We hope that you enjoy the conclusion to this absurd story in which people are wildly in-character throughout, because sadly no one paid us $85 million not to do it. Settle in and wonder for yourselves whether Saved By The Bell's Zack Morris or Tony Shaloub would be your dream Superman. Jon Peters is a veteran Hollywood film producer and executive. His credits include such films as "Batman," "Tango and Cash," "Superman Returns," and "A Star is Born."
For our latest venture into Development Hell, we take on one of the biggest, most infamous examples of a film that never came to be: Tim Burton's Superman Lives. In the first part of our deepest dive yet, we start most people's first exposure to the story, Kevin Smith's story of getting hired to write the script. We examine Smith's story and dissect his script, but to really lay the groundwork for this tale we need to get to know the producer who hired Smith to begin with, Jon Peters. We relive the most intense and absurd of their filming experiences, revel in the early years of the View Askewniverse, ponder whether Jon Peters thinks Barbara Streisand can read, learn something new about sex worker hair trends of the 70s, and so, so much more. Listen as we rifle through the vast and numerous filing cabinets that hold this story, as we wish Warner Bros had done before Peters could get his hands on Supes' rights from the Salkinds. CW: Sexism, homophobia, violent behavior, comparisons to Donald Trump, mention of the Heidi Fleiss Hollywood Madame case -- and that's all just Jon Peters!
