Anna and Geoff discuss WHITE NIGHTS by Fyodor Dostoevsky translated by Ronald Meyer.  A man meets a woman on the street in St Petersburg and falls in love in this short story. It has become a Tik Tok sensation in recent months and Penguin has commissioned a new audiobook to be read by Bridgerton's Luke Thompson.  Dostoevsky was in his romantic, millennial era when he wrote this (notably, before he spent four years in prison and escaped a death sentence). Other books mentioned: SUBTLY WORDED by Teffi translated by Anne Marie Jackson THE GAMBLER AND OTHER STORIES by Fyodor Dostoevsky CRIME AND PUNISHMENT by Fyodor Dostoevsky LETTER FROM AN UNKOWN WOMAN by Stefan Zweig translated by Anthea Bell Coming up: THE HOUSE OF THE DEAD by Dostoevsky Follow us! Recommended by our friend Shawn Mooney of Shawn Breathes Books, we enjoyed this novel set in Victorian London about a young woman returning to claim her inheritance. Light and witty, these books have been compared with Jane Austen and P. G. Wodehouse. Kate has become obsessed with the series and has now read all eight books. But will she convince Anna to do the same?   Books mentioned: JONATHAN STRANGE AND MR. This is Navalny's autobiography detailing his rise to be a Russian opposition leader, but is also a prison diary following his arrest in January 2021.  He died in prison in February 2024. A New York Times bestseller, best book of the year (New Yorker, Atlantic, NPR) and finalist for the National Book Critics Circle Award. We highly recommend it - essential reading. Also so was wie WHEN EVIL LURKS, RED ROOMS, DREAM SCENARIO oder den völlig einzigartigen HUNDREDS OF BEAVERS. The man who lies to himself and listens to his own lie comes to a point that he cannot distinguish the truth within him, or around him, and so loses all respect for himself and for others. And having no respect he ceases to love.” ― Fyodor Dostoevsky, The Brothers Karamazov       “Pain and suffering are always inevitable for a large intelligence and a deep heart. The really great men must, I think, have great sadness on earth.” ― Fyodor Dostoevsky, Crime and Punishment       “To go wrong in one's own way is better than to go right in someone else's.” ― Fyodor Dostoevsky, Crime and Punishment     “I say let the world go to hell, but I should always have my tea.” ― Fyodor Dostoevsky, Notes from Underground     “Man only likes to count his troubles; he doesn't calculate his happiness.” ― Fyodor Dostoevsky, Notes from Underground, White Nights, The Dream of a Ridiculous Man, and Selections from The House of the Dead     “People speak sometimes about the "bestial" cruelty of man, but that is terribly unjust and offensive to beasts, no animal could ever be so cruel as a man, so artfully, so artistically cruel.” ― Fyodor Dostoyevsky     “The mystery of human existence lies not in just staying alive, but in finding something to live for.” ― Fyodor Dostoyevsky, The Brothers Karamazov     “But how could you live and have no story to tell?” ― Fyodor Dostoevsky, White Nights     “Taking a new step, uttering a new word, is what people fear most.” ― Fyodor Dostoevsky, Crime and Punishment     “The world says: "You have needs -- satisfy them. You have as much right as the rich and the mighty. Don't hesitate to satisfy your needs; indeed, expand your needs and demand more." This is the worldly doctrine of today. And they believe that this is freedom. The result for the rich is isolation and suicide, for the poor, envy and murder.” ― Fyodor Dostoyevsky, The Brothers Karamazov       “Much unhappiness has come into the world because of bewilderment and things left unsaid.” ― Fyodor Dostoevsky     “Nothing in this world is harder than speaking the truth, nothing easier than flattery.” ― Fyodor Dostoevsky --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/manlihood/message

In the late 80s and early 90s Burton had four national number one R&B/Dance hits -- "One More Shot," rose to Billboard's number five slot and led to Burton's first major-label solo deal. Atlantic Records released her first LP, "In Black & White," which included the hit single, “I Remember What You Like". “Bad Habits,” off her second album was a #1 dance hit in America and rose to #12 on the R&B charts. She has to her credits as well two gold records from films -- Harry Belafonte's Beat Street and White Nights starring Gregory Hines and Mikhail Baryshnikov. Moving more into an Inspirational direction, she created with producer/composer Peter Link, The Jenny Burton Experience, an award winning Inspirational group ran for seven years to sold out standing room only audiences at New York City's "Don't Tell Mama". The Jenny Burton Experience also opened at Trump Marina for Al Green, performed with The Gap Band and Morris Day and The Times at The Indianapolis Black Expo for 80,000 people, opened for Stevie Wonder at Lincoln Center in NYC, and completed a one month run headlining at Resorts International in Atlantic City, the first Gospel group to ever headline in Atlantic City. Then she went away for 17 years and worked on Wall Street.

Why has Hollywood made so few movies that are critical of the Soviet Union? Western filmmakers pumped out mountains of anti-Nazi films during the few short years of WWII, but very few anti-USSR movies over the long Cold War. The reasons for this are fascinating, and so are these few films. In this episode we will discuss "White Nights," which pits the KGB against ballet and tap dancers, and still manages to one of the most realistic movies ever made. Stay connected to us here: trex-arms.com/newsletter/

In the late 1980s, Hollywood reflected the real world thaw in the Cold War by depicting the idea of two Russias: the cold bureaucratic state run by grey men intent on propping up a crumbling regime, and the beautiful, little known country of real, everyday Russians who live rich and full lives despite it all. Our three films this week show the two Russias in different ways and in different stages of the 1980s Cold War. White Nights, the story of a Russian ballet dancer who defected to America and is forced to return, came out in December 1985. The Hunt for Red October, based on a 1984 Tom Clancy novel, was released in March 1990, a few months after the world changed. The Russia House, based on John le Carre's 1989 novel came out Christmas Day, 1990, exactly one year before the Soviet Union closed up shop for good. People who need support for the telling of personal stories—people who also want to lend that same support to others. Live Your Story already has my heart and I'm so excited to share it with YOU! Please don't close the book on the light you have to share. Choose to live and SHARE your story—you are important and worth the effort. I promise The short story, White Nights by Fyodor Dostoevsky which is decidedly melancholy, introduces us to characters that in spite of disappointment are real and honest and willing to honor the needs and wants of others and to search for the meaning in sadness because without it we cannot experience JOY. I LOVE the very famous quote … “But how could you live and have no story to tell?” — Fyodor Dostoevsky And, here's the link to Julie Beck's article in The Atlantic: Life Stories. I think you'll also love learning more about Jonathan Adler, professor of psychology at Olin. His work is fascinating! Join Kyle and Ardon as they continue their multi-part series on one of the most infamous cults of all time: JONESTOWN. When we left off last week we had detailed some accounts of what life was like in Jonestown; before and after Jim Jones arrived in Guyana. Jim Jones was becoming more paranoid, erratic, and violent than he ever had before. It was all building to a head, and things were about to get a lot worse.  Because of Jim  Jones' paranoia, he started to employ what would become a relatively regular occurrence while Peoples Temple was in Guyana, White Nights. We will also be discussing the visit to Jonestown from United States congressman Leo Ryan, which unfortunately ended in tragedy. Hold on to your asses, because things are about to get backwards! https://linktr.ee/backasswardspod
