On this episode of the podcast, it's another episode from the old podcast My Celluloid Heart Podcast that was originally released on July 29th, 2022, Phillip and his cousin Chip dive deep into S. Craig Zahler's Dragged Across Concrete. They start the show by giving respect to David Warner who passed away a bit ago, RIP. It's then time for a small correction from a couple of week's ago. Then they talk about all the main information of the movie. Phillip and Chip then talk about who they would recast in the movie, if they made it today. They read some Listener Opinions about the movie from Instagram. It's then time to walk through the movie and talk about their favorite parts. They then give their reviews of the film and do a wrap up. Afterwards, Phillip gives his Phil's Film Favorite of the Week; Man of the West (1958) (Criterion Channel). It is a great discussion like always. Come back next week for the Season 3 premiere episode, where Phillip will be joined by Erik Clapp and Rich Johnson to discuss 1963's The Great Escape.

This week is another episode from the old podcast that my cousin Chip and I use to do called My Celluloid Heart Podcast. On this episode released on July 22nd, 2022, Phillip and his cousin Chip dive into the 2017 S. Craig Zahler' film Brawl In Cell Block 99. First they start with a chat, and then they dive into the general information about the movie with some facts sprinkled in. They then do the RECASTED segment, which is who would they cast in the movie if it were made today. It's then time to read Listener Opinions from Instagram. Then they dive deep into Brawl In Cell Block 99's plot and talk about what they liked or disliked. At the end Phillip gives his Phil's Film Favorite of the Week; Code of Silence (1995) on HBOMax. It's another great discussion by the 2 cousins. We hope you enjoy. Next week is another episode that we recorded the week after this one about Dragged Across Concrete (2019).

The on-the-spot pitching of what could have been 2019's "Hellboy" is genuinely awesome and surprising.  "The "Dirty Sons of Pitches" are trying a new hybrid game/pitch this week in honor of the astounding "Hellboy" reboot, so the guys will pitch a new version of a Hellboy movie using random plot elements decided by dice rolls every so often. It's amazing that it's not only cohesive, and awesome, but easily better than the film in theaters.  Available on iTunes and Spotify Episode 235 includes: -Star Wars is back with a TV show, a new trailer for Episode IX, a new title, and more... of the old. -"Missing Link" is the least Laika film yet but still charming. -Nate declares "Dragged Across Concrete" is one of the best films of 2019. -Ben is flabbergasted by the "Hellboy" reboot. -This Week's Pitch -- Switch the Pitch (Hellboy)! -The guys roll a dice to select new plot additions (New Character/Flashback/Plot Twist/Action Scene/Death Scene/Sex Scene) and pitch, on the spot, a new "Hellboy" and it is awesome. This lasts a half hour! -This Week's Game -- So Shalit Be! -The guys conclude with another rousing edition of impersonating film critic/social deviant Gene Shalit and coming up with increasingly absurd blurbs for films."

Ben & Rob finish their trilogy of contemporary grindhouse with S Craig Zahler's final movie ‘Dragged Across Concrete'. Starring famously disgraced racist Mel Gibson alongside Vince Vaughn as two suspended cops stealing money from a heist that's not yet happened. Universally ignored upon it's release by both festivals and wider audiences, ‘Dragged Across Concrete' lost almost all of its budget yet ended up briefly being the most streamed film on Netflix. Zahler's grimly dark eye as director delighted us in his previous outings (Bone Tomahawk, Brawl In Cellblock 99) but has he gone too far with his latest grindhouse genre-piece? Has Ben finally found a exploitation cinema series that Rob loves 100% of? And is there hope for Mel Gibson's career after an unforgivable string of disgusting anti-semitism, racism and misogyny? No, and we don't even consider for a second there could be. No film is good enough for us to forgive Mel Gibson. PLUS!  This week on Fabulous Film and Friends  I'm both chasing butterflies and swatting at hornets whilst forcing my friends to watch and analyze the films of director S. Craig Zahler a filmmaker who couldn't have a more awkward professional name than if he had gone with "E. Marvin Bummington." But are his films worth discussing? We're talking 2015's Bone Tomahawk starring the mighty Kurt Russell, Patrick Wilson, Richard Jenkins, Matthew Fox, David Arquette, Lili Simmons, Fred Melamed, Kathryn Morris, Geno Segers and in a pair of blink and you'll miss ‘em cameos: Sean Young and Michael Paré then 2017's Brawl in Cell Block 99 starring Vince Vaughn, Jennifer Carpenter, Udo Kier, Marc Blucas, Geno Segers, Dion Mucciato and Don Johnson and finally Dragged Across Concrete which came out somewhere in 2019 and stars Mel Gibson, Tory Kettles, Michael Jai White, Thomas Kretschmann and “the S. Craig Zahler traveling players” who include Vince Vaughn, Jennifer Carpenter, Fred Melamed, Udo Kier and Don Johnson. My guests today are my go-to series regulars who are the only pair I know who have the slightest interest in joining me in this flight of fancy, Roseanne Caputi and Alex Robertson.Okay before we wander outside of town onto the deadly trail: the synopses: In Bone Tomahawk, a murderous outlaw unwittingly leads a band of cannibalistic savages into a peaceful western town where the brutes kidnap the jailed outlaw, a deputy and the town's doctor who is also the wife of Arthur, a local rancher. Despite an injured leg, Arthur joins a rescue party with Sheriff Hunt, Hunt's old deputy Chicory, and a mysterious dandy cum gunslinger named Brooder. With Arthur's injury slowing them down, the four brave men follow the savage's path to hellish territory where they come face-to-face with unimaginable horrors that test both the team's courage and sanity. Brawl in Cell Block 99  tells the tale of Bradley Thomas who, in one day , is fired from his job and learns his wife is having an affair. He decides the only way to salvage his marriage is to go full time into drug smuggling to make the real money. A year later all is well: Bradley has a big house and his wife is pregnant but he goes in on a shady deal with some sleazy cartel types and it all goes south, forcing Bradley to choose between killing cops and killing cartel members. He chooses the latter but still ends up with in a five year prison sentence in a minimum security prison. Seems it is what it is until a messenger from the cartel comes to visit Bradley on his second day in the cooler and tells him that if he doesn't get transferred to the maximum-security prison in order to kill a high value target in Cell Block 99 that his wife and unborn child will be murdered. Bradley dutifully and mercilessly follows their orders to save his family  until he realizes all may not be what it seems.  In Dragged Across Concrete, unorthodox and vaguely shady take-no-prisoners cops, Brett Ridgeman and Anthony Lurasetti, are suspended for use of excessive force and use their unpaid leave to plan a heist. Unfortunately, their plot leads to witnessing a deadly bank robbery committed by a vicious and amoral trio of crooks led by Lorentz Vogelmann, who hired street thugs Henry Johns and Biscuit to be part of their team. With a dire hostage situation on their hands and after witnessing several murders, Henry and Biscuit begin to suspect that their hours are numbered as part of Vogelmann's crew. At the same time, Ridgeman and Lurassetti are the only ones who have tailed the gang to their getaway hideout and are the only pair who can make a difference. The two forces meet up in the proverbial abandoned warehouse and chaos ensues. How do the films stack up?

This 2018 S Craig Zahler film... we just don't know what to make of it! A compelling Mamet-esque crime film? A racist vehicle for Mel Gibson? Some looney tunes style violence passed off as realistic? Unclear! But it did get us talking! Tangents include shoplifting, being a good kid, and discussions of when film is commentating on something versus when a film is simply repeating racist tropes.

In the timeframe of 2019 when some big films such as The Lighthouse, Jojo Rabbit, and Doctor Sleep arrived it was easy to forget about a realistic cop film in the works. Today we talk about that as we follow Brett and Tony as detectives who are suspended for 6 weeks and in order to make money must rob the robbers. A film that can be described as "painfully long" is not without a rhyme and reason as it is a very true depiction of cop work that throws a twist in the only way S. Craig Zahler knows how. Once you see what happens by the end, you'll also be yelling "anchovies"

This Week on Black Cat Horror we are talking about the 2015 Horror Western: Bone Tomahawk. This Sheriff star studded indie film was the directorial debut of Craig Zahler who would go on to do other brutal films such as Brawl on Cell Block 99 and Dragged Across Concrete. Kurt Russell comes back from Tombstone as the law around these parts, Patrick Wilson finally leaves that haunted ass to put on a cowboy hat and find his kidnapped wife, and Mathew Fox gets off that terrible island to be Doc holli...I'm sorry, John Brooder. Hangout with us as we brave the frontier in search of cannibal troglodytes losing four horses, three men, all our morals, for one lady! Say good-bye to my wife...I'll say hello to yours.

Tate Steinsiek is an award-winning special effects makeup artist, writer, and director who's highly anticipated Castle Freak reimagining launches today on Shudder! Tate has worked on multiple films, including Spiderman, Puppet Master: The Littlest Reich, Scare Package, Satanic Panic, Sharknado 2, and Dragged Across Concrete. Tate is also a mainstay effects artist on shows like Saturday Night Live, Law & Order, and multiple titles on The Discovery Channel. Tate is a two-time finalist on FACE OFF, in both Seasons 1 & 5 and one of the show's most beloved contestants. I've known Tate for years and have been a huge fan of his work. His style is one of the most interesting and recognizable of today's practical effects artists and I have been dying to see his reimagining of Castle Freak since it was announced back at Monsterpalooza. The production stories behind the making of Castle Freak are completely insane. While shooting in Albania, where apparently horror movies are very frowned upon, the team tried to hide the subject matter of their movie, but unfortunately, the actor playing the freak, wearing the full freak bodysuit, briefly went outside in the creature suit and caused multiple local villagers to call in extraterrestrial sightings. Yeah, it was that crazy, and Tate gets into it in this conversation. Anyhow, he's my brother from another mother, and I always love talking to him; without further ado, here is the awesome & fantastically talented Tate Steinsiek.   Deliver the gore without the blood. This is an interesting point that Tate observed from working with S. Craig Zahler. On a lot of Zahler's movies, as brutal as they get, they're not always very bloody. This is perhaps most noticeable in Brawl in Cell Block 99, and the effect is actually quite chilling. When you don't have blood to cover everything thing up with, the audience can observe even more visceral nuances like bones crunching, sinew snapping, internal organs being pulverized, etc. Tate attended the Tom Savini School, so he knows blood, but this bloodless approach to gore was something he was inspired by. I love a blood bath just as much as the next guy, but as a horror director, it's important to learn how to innovate and do things a little differently, so don't be so quick to douse everything in blood; less can be more.   Surround yourself with people that you trust. Filmmaking, particularly low budget filmmaking, is putting yourself at the mercy of Murphy's law - things will inevitably go wrong. As a director, it's important to realize that you're one person, and you're incapable of making all of the decisions and executing all of the quick thinking required to address all of the many problems that will plague your production. To try is to quickly & easily burn out and make yourself crazy. Therefore, it's critical to have a crew of people whose opinions you value and who you trust overall to make the decisions for you that will keep your movie on track. Unfortunately, many film sets are plagued with toxic egos, backstabbers, too many opinions, and even saboteurs - all of which can collectively zap everyone's energy and erode the very foundation of your movie. Tate's been working on movies for many, many years and luckily had a number of trusty contacts to call on when it came time to make Castle Freak. It takes a while to find these people, of course, but once you do, do not let them go and treat them like gold. They can make or break your movie and give your production a flow, a speed, and a stability that you simply cannot accomplish by yourself.   Enjoy the tough times. Tate talks about how directing is firing on all cylinders because it taps every single ounce of energy, creativity, reserve that you have. To Tate, this is a wonderful feeling and something to embrace. One thing you notice as Tate talks through all the trials and tribulations that happened on the Castle Freak shoot, he's never ever complaining. He's never annoyed or resentful for the difficult times; instead, he has gratitude for every ounce of difficulty that this movie presented him with. That's what filmmaking is. As a director, your worth is not always calculated by the quality of the movie that you make but by the severity of the challenges you were able to overcome. That's what a lot of producers look for in directors, is problem solvers. When production challenges present themselves, are you going to buckle under the pressure or prove that you have an iron reserve? Despite the difficulties of the Castle Freak shoot, Tate embraced the growth the experience provided him with. He'd worked on enough movies to expect the journey to be difficult, so he loved every single painstaking minute of the process because he knew it was making him a better director.  Thanks for listening!
