Degens Andy S and Brandon Bombay get groovy baby, during Spooky Sleazon as they discuss the indescribable classic, 'Evil Dead II.' Andy kicks it off telling a story about the time he and friends tried to channel their own Ash-like maybe by having chainsaw battles, and it turned out about as well as reading a passage from the Necronomicon. Then the fellas make an argument for this being possibly the greatest film of all-time as it starts as a one man show that blends live action Looney Tunes-style comedy with truly unsettling moments. Body parts get severed, blood pours from every conceivable opening, and it's all held together by the undeniable charisma — and classic Hollywood good looks — of Bruce Campbell. The 'Evil Dead' franchise not only reshaped horror, but the reverberations of its impact changed comic book movies forever as director Sam Raimi would later be given the keys to one of the biggest franchises of all-time. Check out the ep, and you'll be having a burning in helluva good time.
Guess what? The girls found the Necronomicon and are diving into the 2023 horror film, Evil Dead Rise! Hello, friends! Welcome back to the Video Store Podcast. After a short break (you'll find out why in this episode), the store has reopened just in time for Halloween! On this episode of the podcast I'm recommending four films in which characters accidentally open portals, unleash evil spirits into this world, and spend the majority of the film trying to send it back before… gulp… you know.Evil Dead 2 (1987)Ash Williams is one unlucky fellow as, once again, he finds himself in a remote cabin accidentally opening a portal to Hell after playing recorded passages read from the Necronomicon — aka “the Book of the Dead.” You don't need to have seen the first film to watch this one. Grab a bucket of popcorn and your chainsaw and check this one out.The Gate (1987)Glen, his best friend Terry, and Glen's older sister Al accidentally open a gate to Hell in their own backyard and must use what resources they have to put them back. For being PG13, The Gate has some pretty horrifying (and amazing) special effects. This is the film that turned me on to The Killer Dwarves and made me fear geodes. Night of the Demons (1988)A group of teens are invited to attend a Halloween party at an abandoned funeral parlor (rumored to be haunted) and perform a seance. What could possibly go wrong? If you said “nothing” you haven't been paying attention! One by one most of the teens become possessed, killed, or killed and then possessed. These demons like to mix things up! A great horror flick with a great 80s vibe. Witchboard (1986)If you've learned anything from this podcast so far I hope it's to not go around trying to open portals to other worlds. In Witchboard, Linda begins dabbling with an Ouija Board and if you think that leads to good things, you have learned nothing. It's up to Linda's current boyfriend and ex-boyfriend to team up and drive the evil out of her. I won't tell you if they are successful but I will tell you this film has at least two sequels. Thanks for stopping by our video store. Enjoy the new hot dog roller and cocktail Ms. Pac-Man machine we added by the front door. Grab a few horror films while you're here and don't forget to rewind them before you return them. Thanks for coming in! This is a public episode. Henrique Couto & Rachael Redolfi cut deep into Sam Raimi's The Evil Dead (1981)—the raw, relentless, cabin-in-the-woods classic that jump-started a whole splatter language. We unpack how Raimi's scrappy camera attacks, Tom Sullivan's gnarly makeup/stop-motion, and Bruce Campbell's live-wire performance forged a cult juggernaut on a shoestring. We also trace the Michigan-to-Tennessee origin story (yes, that Morristown cabin), why the movie's fever-dream logic still rattles modern audiences, and how the film's ratings saga (X → NC-17; many releases unrated) fed its outlaw reputation. Inside this episodePure nightmare mode: Why the 1981 original plays it straight—and meaner—than its sequels, leaning into fever-dream momentum instead of jokey splatter.DIY brutality: Tom Sullivan's prosthetics and stop-motion meltdown; Raimi's aggressive camera grammar that makes the cabin feel alive. From Michigan to Morristown: How a Detroit proof-of-concept led to a Tennessee shoot—and the enduring lore around that cabin site. (We discuss the oft-told lightning-strike story and what locals say.) The ratings fight: Festival buzz, an X rating, later NC-17 notes, and why many home releases stayed unrated—fueling the film's “forbidden” aura. Very. The film's been rated X/NC-17 over time for intense gore; many releases are unrated. Who did the effects? Tom Sullivan handled prosthetics and the famous stop-motion finale. Danielle pays homage to Sam's one and only DCOM, Smart House, by bringing the adult horror version to the table with the 2024 movie AfrAId. John Cho and Katherine Waterston (delightfully) star as John Cho and Meredith, parents to three children who are being raised in our technological dystopia. When John Cho's boss requires him to install a very fancy Alexa in his house named AIA who watches their every move, what could possibly go wrong? Nothing, obviously. Definitely nobody dying. And definitely not demons. One of those is probably true. While things are going perfectly fine, John Cho begins to question whether he maybe should have done more research on the company he sold all his privacy to, and how maybe he should have quit his job years ago before his boss sold him out, and also maybe how he should have taught his children to have a little more stranger danger. Meredith, initially the voice of reason, is taken in hook, line and sinker when AIA manages to figure out auto-pay before she does. As AIA ingratiates herself into the family, they soon realize the problem is bigger than even John Cho can imagine. Mostly, Sam's pretty sure, because the AI trained on the Necronomicon; so you could see where that might cause some problems. Is AfrAId better than Smart House or just more fun to say? You be the judge.
While growing up in Kentucky, Mary Eden was often bored. But it was that boredom, she recalls, that helped her find meaningful interests as she explored her world. It led her to art and to adventure. She didn't discover rock climbing until she moved to Moab in her early twenties. Even then, she says she wasn't a naturally-gifted climber. But, she was determined to learn, and did whatever she needed to do to find gear, mentorship and belayers. She always had the drive, and once she learned how to properly train, Eden progressed, fairly quickly, to being one of the best crack climbers in the world. Her climbing accomplishments include Necronomicon (5.14a) and Black Mamba (5.14b). Today, Eden is a professional climber and artist. She shared the story of her life and journey into climbing in Alpinist 89, and she's featured on the cover of that issue. In this conversation, Mary talks about her growth as a climber and the beauty she finds in the holds and heights of Western landscapes, especially around her home in Moab. She reflects on what she learns about herself through climbing, especially during moments of self doubt and explains why she encourages her friends to fail as often as possible. This episode is brought to you with support from the Rab Equipment. Host: Abbey Collins Producer & Engineer: Mike Horn Guest: Mary Catherine Eden Subscribe to Alpinist Magazine

Buenas noches investigadores!!! Abrasacos. Our SUMMER OF LOVECRAFT kicks off deep in the woods of Dunwich. The Necronomicon has been opened, and the the return of the old ones is imminent! Step into the eerie world of cosmic horror as we dive deep into The Dunwich Horror (1970), the cult classic adaptation of H.P. Lovecraft's chilling tale. In this review, we explore the film's psychedelic style, strange performances, and how it captures—or distorts—the essence of Lovecraft's Cthulhu mythos.Starring Dean Stockwell, Sandra Dee, and Ed Begley, this supernatural thriller from American International Pictures takes you to a remote New England town haunted by ancient, otherworldly forces. But how well does Roger Corman's last Lovecraft film hold up over 50 years later?
Lovecraft? ¿De dónde viene el mito del Necronomicón? ¿Qué encontraríamos en este misterioso libro?
Grab your chainsaws and head out to your cabin in the woods because it is time to get groovy. Chuck and Joe hop into the Evil Dead universe to read the Necronomicon.
Die, Monster, Die! (1965), Necronomicon (1993), and Gods of the Deep (2023) While Stephen King may dominate when it comes to movie adaptations of his work—good or bad—one might expect that H.P. Lovecraft, given his immense impact on the literary world, would inspire just as many films. Yet, despite his influence, far fewer movies have been made from his stories than you'd think. Perhaps it's because Lovecraft's horror isn't about the details of what his characters see, but rather what those horrors do to them—often driving them into madness. Are you ready for “the most terrifying film of all time?” That's the bold claim made by the movie's marketing - about an even bolder take on the Cabin In The Woods genre! And that's before it tweaks the deadite formula resulting in a surprisingly emotional result. So let's crack open that Necronomicon to dive into 2013's EVIL DEAD - the “rebootiquel” that manages to do the impossible: successfully be its own thing. In this episode, we're getting under the skin of the film's characters, the personal dynamics that create real drama amongst the scares, and consider the socio-political overtones that the franchise had skimmed over in the past. All this, plus we talk about one of the worst basements we've ever encountered, debate whether Count Orlock is a Dirty Peanut, hear us get in our feelings over this entry, and then pick the best/worst option in a game of Choose Your Own Deathventure!! In the first half, SkyWatch TV host and author Derek Gilbert discussed the origins of the 'Ancient Aliens' hypothesis and revealed a chain of evidence that links together Aleister Crowley, horror fiction author H.P. Lovecraft, and Erich Von Däniken. These links were originally proposed by researchers Peter Levenda and Jason Colavito, he pointed out. Gilbert elaborated on how Lovecraft's themes inspired two French sci-fi authors who delved into such mysteries as who built the pyramids, ancient glyphs, and the Nazca Lines, and this in turn seemed to directly inform Von Däniken's central thesis in "Chariots of the Gods" (1968), that technologies and religions of many ancient civilizations were given to them by ancient astronauts or ETs.Gilbert detailed Lovecraft's complex relationship with theosophy and the occult, noting, "Lovecraft considered himself an atheist and a man of science, but he was more than happy to draw on teachings of people like Helena Blavatsky." He also highlighted the mystical connections between Lovecraft's work and Crowley's magical beliefs. According to Gilbert, Kenneth Grant, Crowley's associate, suggested that Lovecraft was not creating things out of his own imagination but rather was hearing from the same supernatural source as Crowley, specifically concerning a plot device invented by Lovecraft called the Necronomicon (a grimoire of forbidden knowledge or spells). Grant believed this book actually existed in the Akashic records and that Crowley and Blavatsky were accessing it through occult practices. On the topic of ancient aliens, Crowley, in 1907, described a huge tentacled creature in the ocean's abyss, similar to the chaos monster of the Greeks. This was similar to how, some 20 years later, Lovecraft portrayed Cthulhu, the ancient cosmic entity worshiped by cultists. Gilbert also touched on such topics as ET entities called The Nine, the government group known as the Collins Elite, and Ezekiel's wheel.------------In the latter half, paranormal investigator and researcher Kate Ray spoke about her deep fascination with the supernatural, particularly fairies, which have become one of her subjects of expertise. When asked about the connection between fairies and ghosts, she explained her journey from traditional paranormal research to recognizing the presence of fairies in haunted properties. "The more I collected evidence, both in folklore and my own experiences, the more my colleagues and peers took my journey seriously," she reflected. Addressing the physicality of fairies, Ray suggested that while they could be considered etherical or spiritual beings, they have the ability to shape-shift and appear in different guises, perhaps changing from a very small being into human or animal form. The fairies are known to have a rather mischievous streak to the point that they can seem malevolent in their interactions with humans, she continued, adding they don't share the same system of values and morals that we have. Ray observed an increase in fairy interactions during the COVID lockdown as more people sought solace in nature and turned inward. Yet, she cautioned listeners about summoning fairies, stating that if you wish upon a fairy, "do so with caution and some kind of payment," as well as urging respect for nature, as she links fairies to environmental issues. She also spoke about her experience on the television show "Help My House is Haunted," where she utilized remote viewing techniques to connect with a "pixie-type character" causing poltergeist activity in a home.

On Thursday the 26th of August, 2010 at 8:00 p.m. the Hermetic Hour, hosted by Poke Runyon, will present a discussion on "The Dark Side" of Hermetic magick. We will explore the works of the 20th century's most erudite and accomplished diabolist, Kenneth Grant and his "Typhonian Gnosis", tracing his sources through Crowley, the occult artist Austin Osman Spare, and back to the fin d' secle decadents of the late 19th century. We will touch on Grant's adoption of the "Cthulhu Mythos" of fantasy writer H. P. Lovecraft and his fictional "Necronomicon." We will read deliciously evil snippets from Grant's books, and our own lovingly crafted satire "Beyond the Nostrils of Nuit" from the forthcoming Seventh Ray. This really ought to be our Halloween show. Tune in and we'll descend into the Tunnels of Set.

Darkness Syndicate members get the commercial-free version with all artwork created for the YouTube and podcast thumbnails: https://www.patreon.com/posts/111951690IN THIS EPISODE: it's the classic horror story, “The Call of Cthulhu” by H.P. Lovecraft. Howard Phillips Lovecraft was an American author of fantasy, horror and science fiction. He is notable for blending elements of science fiction and horror; and for popularizing "cosmic horror": the notion that some concepts, entities or experiences are barely comprehensible to human minds, and those who delve into such risk their sanity – which describes well what you are about to hear. Lovecraft has become a cult figure in the horror genre and is noted as creator of the "Cthulhu Mythos," a series of loosely interconnected fictions featuring a "pantheon" of nonhuman creatures, as well as the famed Necronomicon, a grimoire of magical rites and forbidden lore. His works typically had a tone of "cosmic pessimism," regarding mankind as insignificant and powerless in the universe – again, something you will hear in “The Call of Cthulhu”. Lovecraft's readership was limited during his life, and his works, particularly early in his career, have been criticized as occasionally ponderous, and for their uneven quality. Nevertheless, Lovecraft's reputation has grown tremendously over the decades, and he is now commonly regarded as one of the most important horror writers of the 20th Century, exerting an influence that is widespread, though often indirect. This is another episode in which I will be treating the source material as if I've been paid to narrate the audiobook – so I will be leaving all language by the author exactly as it was written. There are a couple of racist terms used in the story which I would never utter in my own conversations or even give my brain permission to think of as anything less than inappropriate, but they are used in the original text and I feel it is best to keep history as it is rather than trying to reinvent it, or cover it up. Just know that the words and thoughts are obviously not mine, but those of the author, H.P. Lovecraft, during a time almost 100 years ago when such terms were not as divisive as they are today.SOURCES AND REFERENCES FROM THE EPISODE…“The Call of Cthulhu” by H.P.
