In the final episode of Everybody Knows, Ruby Jones unpacks what she's learnt about the rise and fall of MeToo in Australia, and why holding perpetrators accountable still feels so hard.To help answer that question, Ruby speaks to two people who have thought deeply about the problems in the music industry. The first is Dorothy Carvello. She worked for major labels in the US, and is now blowing the whistle on decades of abuse in the industry. The second is Deena Lynch, also known as Jaguar Jonze. She's an Australian musician who went public about being sexually assaulted a few months ago.Together, the three of them explore what the cost is of speaking out, and whether it's worth it. And what real, genuine, accountability might look like in the music industry and beyond. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Hi pals, We're back with a one-on-one chat after our guest ep last week! First up, some pop culture pregnancy popcorn. The youngest Kar-Jenner announces her second baby and we dive into all the tea from the John Mulaney/ Olivia Munn news. Why do we care so much about celebrity relationships? Two musicians released album covers featuring pregnancy. Lil Nas X has been marketing his forthcoming album ‘Montero' with a prosthetic bump while Drake used the pregnant emojis on his album ‘Certified Lover Boy'. We ask if they're using pregnancy as a gimmick and why it's bad timing. It's also important to note though, that white influencer James Charles used this stunt as well - was the same energy given then? Next up, American production company CBS announced their new reality game show ‘The Activist' this week. The dystopian Hunger Games-esque show will see activists paired with either Usher, Priyanka Chopra-Jones or Julianne Hough to battle it out before reaching the grand final of speaking in front of world leaders at the G20 Summit. We read from activist Clover Hogan's twitter thread on the behind the scenes experience, this i-D magazine article by Douglas Greenwood and we also reference this Guardian article by Arwa Mahdawi titled ‘The rise of performative activism has reached reality TV - but it's not all bad'. We have two recs each this week. Jas recommends ‘The Panic Years' by After Work Drinks & ‘The Trap' by The Victorian Women's Trust. Maggie recommends the ‘Everybody Knows' podcast by Schwartz Media and Pete Davidson's film ‘The King of Staten Island'.Phew! Chat next week honeys. Jas and Mags xo

Is it possible to find true friendships today? Between social media “friends” and real-life “friends” who have lied and let us down, it can be tempting to give up on developing genuine friendships. Something in us longs for deeper relationships. As we look at a group of friends who carried their paralyzed friend to Jesus, we discover what gospel friendships are and why they matter. Blaze Church puts the priority on carrying one another, and that happens best in small groups!

Today's Quotation is care of Leonard Cohen.Listen in!Subscribe to the Quarantine Tapes at quarantinetapes.com or search for the Quarantine Tapes on your favorite podcast app!Leonard Cohen was a Canadian singer-songwriter whose spare songs carried an existential bite and established him as one of the most distinctive voices of 1970s pop music. Already established as a poet and novelist (his first book of poems, Let Us Compare Mythologies, was published in 1956), Cohen became interested in the Greenwich Village folk scene while living in New York City during the mid-1960s, and he began setting his poems to music. In 1967 Judy Collins recorded two of his songs, “Suzanne” and “Dress Rehearsal Rag,” and that same year Cohen began performing in public, including an appearance at the Newport (Rhode Island) Folk Festival. By the end of the year, he had recorded The Songs of Leonard Cohen, which included the melancholy “Hey, That's No Way to Say Goodbye.” That album was followed by Songs from a Room (1969), featuring the now often-covered “Bird on a Wire,” and Songs of Love and Hate (1971).Though some did not care for Cohen's baritone voice and deadpan delivery, he mostly enjoyed critical and commercial success. Leonard Cohen: Live Songs (1973) and New Skin for the Old Ceremony (1974) further deepened Cohen's standing as a songwriter of exceptional emotional power. His career then took a decided turn for the worse with the disappointing Death of a Ladies' Man (1977), a collaboration with legendary producer Phil Spector, whose grandiose style was ill suited to Cohen's understated songs. For most of the 1980s Cohen was out of favour, but his 1988 album, I'm Your Man, included the club hits “First We Take Manhattan” and “Everybody Knows” and introduced his songwriting to a new generation. In addition, Various Positions (1984) included what became Cohen's best-known song, “Hallelujah.” Although it did not initially receive much attention, the single gained widespread popularity when covered by Jeff Buckley in 1994. The ballad was later performed or recorded by hundreds of artists and featured in soundtracks of TV shows and films. After releasing The Future (1992), he retired to a Buddhist monastery outside Los Angeles. He emerged in 1999 and returned to the studio, producing Ten New Songs (2001) and Dear Heather (2004). Released just weeks before his death, Cohen's 14th studio album, You Want It Darker (2016), was received by critics as a late-period masterpiece. For the title track, he posthumously received a Grammy Award for best rock performance. In 2008 he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and in 2010 he was honored with a Grammy for lifetime achievement. From https://www.britannica.com/biography/Leonard-Cohen.For more information about Leonard Cohen:Previously on The Quarantine Tapes:Salman Rushdie about Cohen, at 35:17: https://quarantine-tapes.simplecast.com/episodes/the-quarantine-tapes-168-salman-rushdiePico Iyer about Cohen, at 18:18: https://quarantine-tapes.simplecast.com/episodes/the-quarantine-tapes-004-pico-iyer“Leonard Cohen Makes It Darker”: https://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2016/10/17/leonard-cohen-makes-it-darker“Leonard Cohen”: https://www.pbs.org/newshour/arts/poetry/leonard-cohen

It fictionalizes the real-life story of Katharina Kepler, the mother of astronomer and mathematician Johannes Kepler. Katharina, an elderly widow who seems to care most for her cow Chamomile, is accused of being a witch by another woman in the small town of Leonberg. Soon everyone in town is testifying to Katharina's wickedness. Her own side of the story is told by her neighbor, Simon, who acts as her guardian — but as a bookseller later tells him, “People don't like an old lady's story.” The novel is told through both fictional testimonials as well as actual translated historical documents. Jim spends day at a Service Department realizing what he could have done. What qualities are parent like? Why are they so ripe for satire now? Maybe it is not unusual to let the service worker know your name. A hand painted sign with folksy wisdom on it is lame and that is universally accepted.

Welcome to the 100th episode of Leading Questions! We're doing something a little different to commemorate this episode - instead of a listener question, Dawn and Jer ask each other questions they want to hear the other person answer. So, this time, you get TWO questions! Dawn asks Jer... You've talked about the path you've taken from being an individual contributor to being a leader - How much of that was intentional, and what was your process for becoming a better leader? Jer's question for Dawn is... How do you coach someone in something you're actively bad at? In case you're wondering - here is the puppet that haunts Jer's nightmares: And here's the cross-stitch that haunt's Dawn:

Welcome to Episode 28 of Vintage Sand, your Film History podcast. In this episode, Everybody Knows the Score, we explore some of the best soundtracks in the history of film. For our purposes this time out, we are focusing strictly on non-diagetic (“background”) music written for instruments and/or voice for a particular film. So we are not focusing on… • …songs written for a soundtrack. This rules out both musicals and collections ranging from Isaac Hayes’ music for Shaft to Aimee Mann’s original songs for Magnolia. • …curated collections of songs by various artists. We call this the T-Bone Burnett Rule. Choosing songs for a film is an art in itself, and such directors as Scorsese, Tarantino, both our favorite Andersons and the Coen Brothers are among the masters. A worthy endeavor if done well, but another art form entirely. • …collections of classical pieces by one composer (Manhattan, for example) or multiple composers (think 2001 and The Tree of Life) So we range from Golden Age Hollywood masters like Max Steiner, Dmitri Tiomkin and Franz Waxman, all the way through the best work being done today, from Alexandre Desplat and Carter Burwell to Reznor/ Ross and Jonny Greenwood. We also try to establish that the collaboration between director and composer can be among the most crucial in making bad films good and good ones classics. So don’t be surprised if a lot of work that these partnerships produced appears among our faves: Bernard Herrmann and Alfred Hitchcock, John Williams and Steven Spielberg/George Lucas, Nino Rota and Francis Coppola, Ennio Morricone and Sergio Leone and Danny Elfman and Tim Burton, to name but a few. Fair warning—between our atrocious humming skills and copyright issues, you may not hear much actual music. But you will surely know the score.
