Navigating Identity Politics in the Dharma with Dr. Daniel Ingram and Gary Sanders

Dharma Junkie

The Buddha taught that the 5 clinging agrregates lead to suffering. In a sense, identity itself leads to suffering. Trying to be "somebody." Join Dr. Daniel Ingram, Gary Sanders, and myself as we discuss how to navigate this topic and teach the Dharma effectively in world that is, at a glance, obsessed with identity.  It's a tough topic to navigate and one that is NEVER discussed. There's risk involved in even talking about this topic, but fortunatey for all of you I don't care about being cancelled or any of that.  This topic in particular lead to my being ostracized from Wildheart Meditation Center, due to motives that are all their own and I still don't understand.  I teach the Dharma (Dhamma) to help people END their suffering, not create more of it. There's too much enabling in American Dharma and not enough truth and honesty. The kindest thing you can do for someone is be honest with them. This is how we help, not by telling people what they WANT to hear, but telling them what the NEED to hear. Sometimes the truth isn't going to feel good, however.  That being said, I love you all and I hope you enjoy this conversation. ~Justin   gulfcoastdharma.org boundlessheartdharma.com/ .integrateddaniel.info/

Gary Sanders lives in Los Angeles, CA where he founded SCV Mindfulness. He was empowered to lead Buddhist meditation and dharma groups at Against the Stream Buddhist Meditation Society. He also helped found Refuge Recovery, a Buddhist-based recovery program for all addictions, which has now spread worldwide.  After moving to Portland, OR in 2015, Gary was asked to join the teaching staff at Portland Insight Meditation Community and was empowered to teach in the lineage of the great Ruth Denison. Gary travels frequently, teaching daylongs and workshops all around North America, and specializes in the heart-based practices of The Buddha. Gary originally got sober in 12-step groups using Kevin Griffin's book One Breath at a Time, a non-theistic Buddhist approach to the 12 Steps. Through the years he's been involved in various Buddhist-based and other alternative non-theistic recovery programs. This conversation feels like you're sharing a warm cup of coffee in a diner with an old friend as they share their life and experiences. It was a privilege to have Gary Sanders join us to share many stories from his life. ⚠️ Before you listen, we do want to give you a trigger warning for this episode. Violence against children and racially motivated crimes and attacks are discussed throughout this conversation. ⚠️Gary was born and raised in St. Louis (if you see him around today, he is most likely decked out in St. Louis Cardinals gear). Being born in the 1950s into a strong Christian family is something that Gary is thankful for as he expresses, he's not sure what life would've looked like without the protection and love of God. At a very young age Gary experienced violence against him because of the color of his skin. Your heart will break as you hear about some of Gary's experiences of violent discrimination, racism and the adversity that brought, particularly in his schooling. You will be amazed at how Gary was able to pick himself up and keep going despite what was happening around him. He was drafted for Vietnam and settled with the Air Force because of the opportunity to play baseball during his time in service. This led to a years long career as an Air Traffic Controller for the Air Force. You'll hear about how Gary was able to achieve his bachelor's and master's degrees, heal from cancer, his passion for young people through coaching, his love for dogs, his desire to serve and love how God loves us - Sarah and Gary cover a lot of ground! You will be challenged and blessed by this conversation. As Gary and Sarah both say, we don't have to allow our differences to divide us but rather we can come together in Christ centered community celebrating that we are all children of God. Get in touch with Gary about his sports program/ministry: stlouiskid1@yahoo.comWould you please subscribe and leave us a review? This will help our podcast reach more people! We'd love it if you'd share this podcast with your friends on social media and beyond. As Ram Dass once said, “If you think you're enlightened, go spend a week with your family.” I'm thinking about this quote as many of us are grappling with the Omicron variant and trying to make the most of this winter break. This time of year can be hard for everyone, and I'm also thinking about all of us in recovery who have difficult family histories, for whom the holiday season might bring up difficult or outright traumatic memories. During this challenging time, I wanted to have an episode that was hopeful and full of practical teachings about both meditative and recovery practices. So I'm very grateful that I had the chance to sit down with Gary Sanders.Gary is a Buddhist teacher, person in recovery, and a joyful and energizing presence. As we discuss, he has had to practice deeply to get there. After an emotionally and physically abusive childhood, Gary was caught up in addiction, then embarked on a long road of exploring different mutual help approaches to recovery. From AA, to secular groups, to multiple Buddhist mutual help groups, Gary has explored several pathways to recovery. We discuss his path, his meditation practice, psychedelics, and how he needed more than extraordinary states of consciousness as part of his recovery. We also talk at length about metta (lovingkindness), and how lovingkindness practices were a central part of his recovery from addiction and trauma. I found our conversation calming and inspiring, and I hope you do too.Gary Sanders is a teacher at Portland Insight Meditation Community in the lineage of Ruth Denison, in the Burmese lineage of Vipassana Buddhism. For more information, check out the PIMC website and their Facebook page. He can also be found as a regular contributor to The Tattooed Buddha, and Gary's website (though under construction at the moment) has a great repository of some guided meditations and teachings: Boundless Heart Dharma. In this episode: - The Buddhist Recovery Network - 8-step Recovery, an alternative recovery program using Buddhist teachings. - Secular Organizations for Sobriety , "a nonprofit network of autonomous, non-professional local groups, dedicated solely to helping individuals achieve and maintain sobriety/abstinence from alcohol and drug addiction, food addiction and more." - Zen Mind, Beginner's Mind, the classic book by Shunryu Suzuki Roshi - Spirit Rock Statement on allegations of rape, sexual harassment and other misconduct we discussed. - The Jhanas: “mental or meditative absorption,” “a set of states of deep and subtle concentration focused on a single object.” - Lovingkindness: the classic book by Sharon Salzberg - A Zen translation of the Metta sutra - My interview with Kevin Griffin, episode 3 of this podcast.Sign up for my newsletter for regular updates on new interviews, material, and other writings.

With a tackle box and a fishing pole, Gary Sanders baits his hook with a worm and casts his line into the river outside of Desloge, Missouri. “ I caught a couple little bass,” he says. ”I think they were small mouth. They weren't very big. They were only about that big -- only 6 inches long.” Sanders is posted up at the Big River. He moved here from St. Louis a few years ago to live a more outdoors lifestyle. You won't see him or many other fishermen in this area take home their catch for a fish fry though. That's because these waters are still dealing with lingering contamination from lead mining.
