Hosts: - Beth McMullen- Lisa SchmidTheme: The importance of secondary characters in storytelling.Key Discussion Points: - Secondary characters add depth, complexity, and enrich the narrative.- They contribute to the world-building, provide subplots, conflicts, and challenges.- Effective secondary characters are distinct from main characters and have their own development arc.- They can reflect, challenge, and highlight aspects of the protagonist, aiding in their growth.- Secondary characters should impact the plot, offering information and altering the course of the narrative.- Every character introduced must serve a purpose to the plot or character development.- It's important to avoid filler characters and “kill your darlings” if they don't contribute to the story.- Distinctive traits or quirks should serve the story and make characters memorable.- Complex relationships between main and secondary characters enrich the narrative and drive character growth.- Secondary characters can embody themes or contribute symbolically to the story's message. Conclusion: Secondary characters are pivotal to storytelling success. They must be multi-dimensional, engaging, and crucial to the plot and theme. For aspiring and working writers, respecting the craft of creating secondary characters can lead to richer narratives and more compelling storytelling, engaging readers who seek depth and authenticity in the stories they read. Sian leads the discussion on our favorite secondary characters, how they are used in fiction, and how authors use them to bring a story to life.
In the penultimate episode of 2022, Harriet presents a new scene and the trio decide names and profiles for their main character's friends. They also learn the history behind the musical Waitress, share the roles they'd most like to see each other perform and debate the origins of a famous saying.
What are Secondary Characters? How do you develop them? And how do you keep them from taking over your books? For thirteen years, Nancy Crochiere wrote a humor column about family life for Massachusetts newspapers, then published a collection of those columns titled The Mother Load. She has worked as a development editor for various educational publishers and has written essays for The Boston Globe, Writer's Digest, and WBUR's Cognoscenti blog. She began her fiction career by penning creative notes excusing her daughters' tardiness at school. With her girls now grown, she lives north of Boston with her husband, a lawyer and marathoner, and a few house plants that could use more attention. Graceland, her first novel, was workshopped in Year 8 of GrubStreet's Novel Incubator program, and will be published by HarperCollins in May 2023.Suzanne DeWitt Hall (she/her/hers) is the author of the Where True Love Is devotionals, the Living in Hope series which supports the family and friends of transgender people, The Path of Unlearning faith deconstruction books, and the Rumplepimple children's books. She is mildly obsessed with vintage cookbooks and the intersection of sexuality and theology. Her debut novel, The Language of Bodies launched recently with Woodhall Press. It's the story of Maddie Well's mission of vengeance after the murder of her wife: a transgender woman of color. Wally Lamb calls it “…a film noir between covers—dark, tense, and sexy.” This is a public episode. They drive the story forward and give the protagonist context, relationships, roadblocks, relief, and more. Here's a preview of what's included:[01:15] Supporting characters are any characters that are not your protagonist or your antagonist. In general, each supporting character in your story will either support or thwart your protagonist as they try to achieve their goal. We have had episodes about protagonists, the characters who want something that drives the plot forward, and antagonists who get in their way. But stories do not live on protagonists alone. After a little bit of a delay, we have way too much fun wrapping up season one of Farscape. First up, “Bone to Be Wild”, where we discuss where the heck Stark disappeared to after leaving with the crew last episode; how does gravity work on an asteroid; how do Leviathans have their inorganic parts installed; and the fall of Commander Crais and the rise of Scorpius as the big bad for the series. Then we cover the season one finale, “Family Ties”. Where we discuss where the heck one of the guest stars of the last episode disappeared to after leaving with the Peacekeepers; did Rygel really try to sell out the whole crew to save himself; how planning your big escape plan is shown and not skipped over; and some more great character development and interaction that we’ve come to expect from Farscape. Finally, we recap our thoughts about the entire season… the lowlights and the highlights. And that even the lowlights have some bits worth watching… not just because we have to for the podcast. Next time, onward to season two! Eric Scott and Jason Johnson.

The glory of the protagonist is always paid for by a lot of secondary characters. - Tony Hoagland The post S16E9 – Sharing the Spotlight: Including Victories for Secondary Characters appeared first on Writing Roots.
It's hard to hear, but not everyone can be a main character. Some of us...well, we have to content ourselves with living in the shadows of the greats. This week, Adrienne and Eliza talk about the role of secondary characters.
Your main character should get all your best lines, but give your secondary characters a little life too. Most of us aren't interested in lifeless skeletons. In which the Bards address several quick questions from Twitter: * how much should I consider genre when coming up with a book idea? * how to write humor without letting your characters become one-dimensional joke machines? * should you get an agent first or try to sell directly to publishers, then get an agent? * what are the pros and cons of taking a pen name and how do you choose? * should you pitch a finished book or a partial/idea? We continue our SUPER SPECIAL BONUS BOOK PLOTTING SEGMENT in which we start from nothing to build out a book idea to show you how pro authors flesh out the bones of a story. Last week we chose a genre, protagonist, and two secondary characters. This week we discuss naming conventions for the book and create three more secondary characters together, taking into account how to deal with tropes and how to outfit a functional adventuring party. Next week we’ll work on the antagonist and plot! And, as always, we cover Things That Will Blow Your Mind. Got a question on writing, publishing, books, comics, or the best kind of cocktail or gluten free goodies to power your creativity? Ask us on Twitter with hashtag #askthebards!

In this episode:Mel works on her secondary characters.Mel felt pretty good about this submission in other respects, and that made it easier for her to focus on beefing up the characters. They called it “putting the dressing on the salad!”Mel has a pile of post-its, notes Mel’s mom leaves for her as she reads Mel’s draft!Mel focuses on the details. She and Kemlo discuss incorporating actual locations into your work and how Mel uses Google Maps to research!“There's nothing worse than reading a book where someone is characterizing a place or a person or whatever that you actually know and getting it all wrong.”Kemlo asks Mel how she is going about putting her revisions on the page. They take a few minutes to talk about Mel’s self proclaimed “jacked-up” process! It involves a list of things to look for in each chapter. We also talk about how sometimes using dictation to write is the equivalent of trying to decode a text-to-speech message from Siri! This is the episode where we find out Abby and Mel are approaching revision very differently. Mel is working with the words on the page, and Abby opens a blank document and works from memory.

The Writ Wit: A Podcast About Writing and the Creative Process
Originally recorded: March 2018 In this episode, the two Matts use a more epic and serious intro song than usual, have the same work they want to rip off as each other, get incredibly eager and forced with their segues (even more so than usual) and talk about how to improve secondary characters as part of a writing workshop. What's the difference between a secondary character and a co-protagonist? What differences are there for improving one type of secondary character versus another? Does every individual character need to be fully three-dimensional to be useful? Will Matt David FINALLY get out of his damn writer's dry spell? (Seriously, Matt Donald is THIS close to firing him...totally serious...not joking...maybe) We discuss it all, flawlessly linking all our segments with a confident, non-forced "and SPEAKING of which..." and talk about Black Panther, Star Wars, Harry Potter, and Lord of the Rings. Have any feedback or questions for our hosts? Email us at mattd@matthewdonaldcreator.com. Also you can purchase Matt Donald's book "Megazoic" on Amazon by clicking here, or its sequel "Megazoic: The Primeval Power" by clicking here. If you'd like, of course.
Your Hosts: Brandon, Mary, Dan, and Howard, with special guest Charlaine Harris Charlaine Harris joined us in front of a live audience at the GenCon Writers Symposium to talk with us about secondary characters—why they're so important, why they can be difficult to write well, and how she brings her secondary characters to life without giving them a POV.

This week on the podcast we're talking about how to write realistic villains that go beyond being "evil for evil's sake" as well as how to craft memorable secondary characters that do more than provide stereotypical roles. We'll be discussing characteristics of villains, how to use "show vs tell" with your villains, not taking the easy way out with villain development, and questions you should ask your villain. With secondary characters, we'll discuss their role, impact, and focus on the main characters and story, how they can act as mirrors without being rules by the main character, positioning your secondary characters and maintaining mystery.
This week: secondary characters who populate your sitcom. Dave (the posh snob) Cohen and James (the cockney spiv) Cary discuss how to make sure your archetypes don't turn into stereotypes. Also, James is writing a sitcom on the internet. What could possibly go wrong...?
How can the Trinity Syndrome help you write better secondary characters? Chas & Stu are joined by Bamboo Killer (aka Emily Blake) - one of the co-hosts of the Chicks Who Script podcast. They take a critical look at secondary female characters in mainstream movies through the lens of the oft-cited Bechdel test and the new, less-cited, Trinity Syndrome. The Trinity Syndrome berates movies for creating a "Strong Female Character With Nothing To Do" (like Trinity in the Matrix sequels) and raises a list of questions for filmmakers to ask themselves about their (female) characters. Chas, Stu & Emily take these questions and use them to analyse the use of female characters in MISSION IMPOSSIBLE: GHOST PROTOCOL, EDGE OF TOMORROW, DAWN OF THE PLANET OF THE APES and HOW TO TRAIN YOU DRAGON 2. They also cover the awesomeness of the awesomeness that is Rose Tyler (Doctor Who), Katniss Everdeen (Hunger Games), and Kira Nerys (Deep Space Nine). Funnily enough, turns out writing better female characters is really about writing better characters... who happen to be female. EPISODE LINKS Chicks Who Script Podcast. In this episode of Bibliophiles Anonymous, Denise and Jess talk about their favorite secondary characters of their favorite series. Yes, we have way too many to name, but we gave it a go. Tolkien, the Hunger Games trilogy by Suzanne Collins, the Belgariad, Mallorean, Elenium and Tamuli series by David Eddings, and many, many, many others.
