It's Lesbian Visibility week, where we take a look at some of the most wonderful women who have shaped Feast of Fun over the course of 20 years. One of my all time favorite musicians is blues singer Gaye Adegbalola. We first met Gaye back in 2005 at the Out Music Awards where she wowed the crowd with her audacious song “Big Ovaries” looking absolutely stunning wearing a white tuxedo with tails that complimented her silver shock of hair and dark skin.Gaye is not your ordinary blues musician, like us she has a sharp sense of humor and passion for restorative justice. An evening with Gaye Adegbalola always proves to be filled with exciting music and a whole lot of fun.Back in 2009 we had the pleasure of having Gaye in the home studio to perform several of her iconic songs, she was in Chicago for a concert at the Old Town School of Folk Music where she and her musical collaborators Ann Rabson and Andra Faye in Saffire performed together one last time. Please enjoy this encore presentation of “The Legendary Gaye Adegbalola” as part of our celebration of Lesbian Visibility Week and the design I made that became the modern lesbian pride flag. Enjoy!FEATURED MUSIC:

This interview was recorded via video conference on  October 29, 2021 by Angela Denise Davis. Gaye Adegbalola talked about her early years in Virginia, college life in Boston, and her career as a Blues musician, griot, and activist. Gaye Adegbalola's website: https://adegbalola.com/ Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/GayeAdegbalolaMusician/ Gaye Todd Adegbalola, a Blues Music Award winner, is best known musically as a founding member of Saffire – The Uppity Blues Women (1984 – 2009). The group recorded exclusively with Alligator Records. Additionally, she has 6 recordings on her own label, Hot Toddy Music (Todd is her family name). Gaye was born and raised in Fredericksburg, Virginia where she sat-in, picketed and protested its racism. She graduated as valedictorian of the then-segregated Walker-Grant High School, went “ up North” to Boston University to finish with a major in biology and a minor in chemistry. Prior to becoming a teacher, she worked as a technical writer for TRW Systems, a biochemical researcher at Rockefeller University, and a bacteriologist at Harlem Hospital. AhSa-Ti Nu meets with composer, guitarist and vocalist Gaye Adegbalola. Best known musically as a founding member of Saffire – The Uppity Blues Women (1984 – 2009). The group recorded exclusively with Alligator Records. Additionally, she has 6 recordings on her own label, Hot Toddy Music (Todd is her family name). More importantly she is the proud mother of son, Juno Lumumba Kahlil. A true griot of our time through both her music and just easy conversation. In addition to being a queer black woman of color artist she is also a powerful activist, as she sat-in, picketed and protested against racism and segregation. In her songwriting she tries to provide a voice for those who have been marginalized by society. By maintaining the blues tradition, she sees herself as a contemporary griot – keeping her history alive, delivering messages of empowerment, ministering to the heartbroken, and finding joy in the mundane. Her most recent CD released in January, 2019, is called “The Griot” and has received rave reviews. Please be sure to follow her on her website, social media and purchase her music! www.adegbalola.com Twitter: @gayeblueswoman Facebook:@GayeAdegbalolaMusician

We've got a special show for you today, blues musician Gaye Adegbalola plays her greatest hits in our studio. She's wrapping up her farewell tour with her band Saffire and getting ready to work on a new solo album. Today Gaye is here to talk about her work in the civil rights movement of the 1960s, what drives her passion in music and why fighting shame is so critical for gay liberation. We first met Gaye back in 2005 at the Out Music Awards where she wowed the crowd with her audacious song "Big Ovaries" looking absolutely stunning wearing a white tuxedo with tails that complimented her silver shock of hair and dark skin. We were charmed by her then and we are so pleased to finally have her in the studio performing such wonderfully outrageous songs such as "Bareback Rider" and "I Can Do Bad All By Myself" which tells the tale of love that just may not be worth it. Gaye's put out six critically acclaimed albums, a live album and thousands of shows with her musical collaborators Ann Rabson and Andra Faye in Saffire, which is on their final tour, so catch these fabulous woman while you still can.[Originally posted as FOF #1076 - The Legendary Gaye Adegbalola - 10.19.09]

Val Carter was referred to me because she wants to do a podcast on mid-adulting and asked if I would show her about producing podcasts. So, she came over to Studio 1 of the worldwide headquarters of the Planetary Gigs Society and we talked and did a test podcast. She asked a lot of questions about creating and hosting a podcast, and in this raw and unedited discussion, we talked about some of the things that go into doing a podcast and Planetary Gig Talk in particular. We also talked about considerations for someone wanting to do a podcast. I am hopeful that more people will consider starting podcasts, blogs, etc about the power of music, and this podcast conversation covers some of those issues. Enjoy this fun and different conversation that hopefully will also be informative. In addition, we talked about the upcoming house concert with Gaye Adegbalola on Nov 23!

Gaye composes, plays guitar and harmonica, and has recorded 10 CDs on Alligator Records and has toured widely throughout the U.S. and internationally. Gaye Adegbalola has been playing music all her life; her father played in a jazz combo and her mother brought her records from the jukebox to listen to as a child. She first started singing on the streets and wrote her first song at an early age. She played the flute and piccolo in high school and then played guitar. She found her dharma, her purpose, to make music at Blues Week. "Blues is a healing magical music," she says. She was with Saffire the Uppity Blues Women for 25 years and blazed trails to empower and bring joy to women and particularly old women. She says it is so wonderful and magical that we have this ability to create music. "I give thanks every day for the blessing of music."
