This episode was originally published as a Patreon exclusive on 2 December 2018In this episode we take a look at the little-known so-called "satanic" murder of John Horgan (7) in Palmerstown, Dublin in 1973. John and his family lived in a quiet neighbourhood of 9 houses backing on to a field. It was there that his 16 year old neighbour, Lorcan Bale, took him and struck him in the back of the head, killing him. Lorcan then brought John's body to the attic of his house - next door to the Horgan's - and trussed him up in the shape of a cross and in front of a home-made altar. No real explanation for the murder would ever emerge. PLEASE NOTE - For some reason - possibly autocorrect - I mention the "Skylark Hotel" in Dublin. No such hotel exists. What I meant to say was the Skylon Hotel. I was half right? Sorry guys! My bad. 2025 Harvard Horizons Scholar Katherine Horgan explores the legacy of the ancient Greek poet Sappho in her project, "Living Sappho: Imitation, Imagination, and Revivification in Early Modern England." Karen Sussman Horgan is the Co-Founder and CEO of VAL Health, a behavioral economics consulting firm that helps healthcare organizations drive engagement and nudge patients to improve their health and lifestyle choices. Behavioral economics is the science of understanding how patients make irrational choices based on biases, fear, and faulty analysis of outcomes and risk. Nudges can be carrots or sticks, but in healthcare, the focus is on making the right path easier to follow, reducing friction, and introducing positive reinforcements rather than penalties. Karen explains, "We work across the entire healthcare ecosystem. We think about digital health companies, how do you drive enrollment and engagement, and how do you optimize the journey? There are communications for that. We do a lot of work with payers, which is closing gaps in care, but also just improving the member experience in general with providers. It could be around provider adoption of new care pathways, but it's also about population health. We work with employers on wellness programs and pharma on that adherence. So think about where information alone isn't driving people to think about their health or take care of themselves. We create the nudges to help make that happen." "It's the science of understanding that we as humans are irrational. We have a bias toward the present. We have an aversion to loss and regret. We overweight probability. There are dozens of known biases, and what we do is harness them rather than asking people to change their biases. So let me give you a few examples to bring this to light because right now people are probably like, What is a bias? So think about Netflix when you watch an episode. First of all, you have choice overload when you get there. So it's giving you recommendations, but it also defaults you into the next episode because it plays on the fact that we have a status quo bias, and we're lazy, and we're just going to sit there and binge-watch. In this chat, we dive into Sarah Horgan's journey toward intentional living and minimalism, which was sparked by her battle with stage four cancer. She talks about how perfectionism and people-pleasing shaped her life, and how mindfulness and emotional health became key in her transformation. Sarah explains how minimalism became a deeply personal journey, not just about physical stuff, but about self-awareness, emotional healing, and simplifying life for more fulfillment. We also discuss her experience with the challenges of motherhood, highlighting the importance of self-forgiveness, the impact of consumerism, and how minimalism plays a role in parenting.Sarah Horgan of Simple + Intentional is a coach, teacher, wife, and mom to a 6-year-old, passionate about living simply. Her journey to simplicity began in 2014 when she was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer, which led her to deep self-reflection. Over time, she realized that perfectionism and people-pleasing weren't serving her, sparking a shift toward simplicity. Becoming a mom further pushed her toward minimalism out of necessity, as she navigated the challenges of parenting without family support. By decluttering her home, she found it easier to maintain a calm, organized space, which allowed her to focus on internal growth. Sarah's mission is to help others simplify their lives, let go of unnecessary clutter, and prioritize what truly matters.Guest Links Web: https://www.simpleintentional.com/IG: http://instagram.com/simpleintentional/Chapters00:00 The Journey to Intentional Living08:51 Mindfulness and Emotional Health18:10 The Deeper Meaning of Minimalism23:59 Practical Steps to Declutter and Simplify29:40 Navigating Body Image and Self-Care34:16 The Journey of Self-Forgiveness39:39 Minimalism and Motherhood44:15 Spring Cleaning: A Fresh Start48:29 Rapid Fire Reflections-----------------CONTACT US: sustainthispodcast@gmail.comJOIN OUR PATREON: https://www.patreon.com/SustainThisPodcast SIGNE HANSENYoutube: https://www.youtube.com/@UseLess_dkWebsite: https://www.uselesswardrobe.dk/IG: https://www.instagram.com/useless_dk/TT: https://www.tiktok.com/@useless_wardrobeCHRISTINA MYCHASYoutube: https://www.youtube.com/@ChristinamychasWebsite: https://www.minimalist-ish.com/IG: https://www.instagram.com/christina.mychas/TT: https://www.tiktok.com/@christina.mychasALYSSA BELTEMPOYoutube: https://www.youtube.com/@AlyssaBeltempoWebsite: https://msbeltempo.com/IG: https://www.instagram.com/msbeltempo/TT: https://www.tiktok.com/@msbeltempo If you loved this episode please share it on your stories and tag us! This week, Anty Horgan of The Bennies sits in to break down the spontaneous creation of the band's 2016 fan-favorite single, "Party Machine." From their early days performing under the name Madonna to their signature blend of psychedelic reggae and ska punk, Anty shares how the band's anything-goes attitude fueled the song's infectious energy. He and Chris dig into the wild recording process, the unexpected success of the track, and how Anty quite literally missed the moment it took off because—fittingly—he was out partying. With talk of vocal effects, genre-bending influences, and the raw confidence that comes from capturing the right vibe at the right time, this conversation is as fun and unpredictable as the song itself. BUY THE SLOW LIVING BOOK HERE! Today, we're talking about setting boundaries, speaking your truth, and protecting your energy—lessons Sarah Horgan learned through her cancer journey. One of her biggest realizations? People don't think about us as much as we assume. And when we try to manage someone else's emotions, we might actually stop them from fully processing their own feelings. Prioritizing yourself isn't selfish—it's necessary. Small, quiet moments—like driving in silence or making a tea latte—can help you reset and recharge. We're also diving into how your environment reflects what's happening inside of you. Sometimes, a little decluttering can be more powerful than you think. Letting go—whether it's old habits, relationships, or even physical stuff—creates space for growth and helps you step into a mindset that serves you. You don't need to hold on to everything to be okay. It's time to build a life that aligns with your well-being, one intentional step at a time.Connect with Sarah Horgan: Website: Simple + IntentionalInstagram: @simpleintentional Facebook: Simple + Intentional Pinterest: Simple + Intentional Apple Podcast: The Simple + Intentional PodcastSpotify Podcast: The Simple + Intentional PodcastWant to know more about living a slowed down life?!Simple Shortcuts to Peace Course - https://stephanieodea.com/peaceNew Year, New You Mini Challenge - https://stephanieodea.com/newyouJoin me for my LIVE Masterclass - https://stephanieodea.com/masterclass/Website - https://stephanieodea.comBlog - https://stephanieodea.com/blog/Slow Living Podcast - https://stephanieodea.com/podcastSpeaking Opportunities - https://stephanieodea.com/speaking/Coaching Opportunities - https://stephanieodea.com/coaching/Courses - https://stephanieodea.com/courses/Contact - stephanieodea.com/contact/

Interview with Gavin Chamberlain, CEO, and Matt Horgan, VP Corporate Development, of Bannerman Energy Ltd.Our previous interview: https://www.cruxinvestor.com/posts/bannerman-energy-asxbmn-strategically-positioned-for-uranium-resurgence-5875Recording date: 18th March 2025Bannerman Energy is making steady progress on its Etango uranium project in Namibia, having completed essential infrastructure including access roads and water facilities. The company has now moved into internal roadworks, construction power implementation, and bulk earthworks, with all blast work completed without incidents.CEO Gavin Chamberlain highlighted their effective water management strategy: "We built a storage dam on site with 10 days storage and since we built that dam, we've had two notified stoppages of the desalination plant, but because we had 10-day storage on site we haven't actually had to stop construction once."The company maintains a conservative financial approach with $81 million AUD in the bank as of the end of 2024, providing runway into 2026. Bannerman currently has no debt, and all running contracts have been committed within their cash flow projections. Despite careful capital deployment, the company maintains its target to bring uranium to market by 2028.Risk mitigation remains a priority, with contracts being broken into smaller packages to reduce financial exposure and enable participation by Namibian contractors. For mechanical contracts, Bannerman has implemented a two-phase approach with secured escalation formulas during competitive bidding. All primary approvals necessary for the project are in place, including environmental licenses, mining licenses, and Heritage Council approvals. Chamberlain characterized Namibia as "Africa light," noting the country's stable business environment and established 46-year history in uranium production.Recently appointed VP Business Development and Investor Relations Matt Horgan brings 15 years of mining sector experience to the company. He emphasized Bannerman's funding approach: "One of the worst things we could do at the moment is pull the trigger preemptively on a highly dilutive equity raise."The company is pursuing multiple funding work streams, including equity investors, debt financing, and potential strategic stakeholders, while navigating a volatile uranium market that has seen prices drop from $107 to the low $60s.Horgan highlighted Namibia's political independence as a strategic advantage, allowing the company to "sell to many places and secure funding channels that other projects may not be able to tap into." The project's multigenerational nature also attracts potential strategic investors looking for long-term supply security.Looking ahead to 2025, Bannerman anticipates completing roadworks and construction power infrastructure while continuing bulk earthworks. Chamberlain expressed cautious optimism that "before the end of this year we will see some form of movement on final financing solutions."View Bannerman Energy's company profile: https://www.cruxinvestor.com/companies/bannerman-energySign up for Crux Investor: https://cruxinvestor.com

Episode overview This unfiltered 2017 archive dialogue captures Maya Horgan Famodu (Founder and Partner, Ingressive Capital) before she became known for straight-talking LinkedIn posts about founder insights and personal growth. Fresh from investment banking, she was forging new pathways between Silicon Valley capital and African startup innovation via carefully-curated investor tours—laying the groundwork for the launch of Ingressive Capital's investment months later. Listening back, you can hear how the same independence and non-traditional EQ that helped a "small girl from a trailer park" believe she could launch a VC fund was already shaping her vision. Critical points - The early signs of the independent thinking that would later become her trademark - How her unconventional background shaped her approach to investment - Why bridging Silicon Valley and African tech required a translator's insight - The unexpected ways growing up between worlds prepared her for building cross-cultural understanding What we know now Looking back from 2024, this conversation reveals both professional and personal threads that would define Horgan Famodu's impact: - The shift from understated confidence to singular public voice - How her own story of independent creativity would later resonate with investors and founders - The evolution from curating entrees to the African tech startup opportunity to foreign investors to leading investments Questions we're pondering - How has Horgan Famodu's public sharing of her personal journey influenced African tech discourse? - What role does authentic leadership play in venture capital today? - How has the relationship between personal story and professional impact evolved in African tech?
In this episode, we have a returning guest who appeared back in December 2019 (Episode 55). Martin Horgan, formally the CEO of Centamin, a gold producer with an operation in Egypt who have recently been acquired by Anglo Gold Ashanti as of 22nd November. A mine engineer by background, Martin has 30 years of experience in the industry working in the field, consultancy, and on the banking side before starting his own mining company, Toro Gold before selling this to Resolute. For the last 4 years, he has been at the helm of Centamin, transforming the company and its flagship operation Sukari into what it is today. Martin takes us through his career and journey and talks about his more recent success with Centamin and what he did to change the fortunes of the business. KEY TAKEAWAYS Martin has a diverse background in mining, spanning over 30 years, including roles in operations, consultancy, and investment banking. His experience has equipped him with a broad understanding of the mining sector, which he leveraged to transform Centamin. Upon joining Centamin, Martin focused on improving geological understanding, which led to a significant increase in the underground reserve from 400,000 ounces to 1 million ounces. This foundational change allowed for better mine planning and execution, ultimately enhancing production capacity. It's vital to build strong relationships with local communities, regional authorities, and national governments. Effective stakeholder engagement is crucial for navigating the complexities of operating in riskier jurisdictions, particularly in West Africa. The launch of Centamin's decarbonisation roadmap was driven by both a moral imperative to mine responsibly and investor expectations for transparency and sustainability. Martin believes that mining must demonstrate its role in decarbonisation and societal benefit to maintain its social license to operate. BEST MOMENTS "I think the thing that sort of surprised me within the West African sphere is that it was the rate of change... it's how quickly they changed as well." "If you get the right people in place... that's what drives success to my mind, you know, ore bodies are ore bodies." "We went from zero to in excess of 50 female professional employees at Sukari in a couple of years." Sharon Horgan has spent decades creating hilarious TV and compelling women characters at every stage of life. In the BBC comedy Pulling, she captured the confusion of early adulthood. Young parenthood was the subject of Amazon Prime’s Catastrophe. And HBO’s Divorce, starring Sarah Jessica Parker, focused on the dissolution of a marriage. Her latest project, Bad Sisters, premieres its second season this week on Apple TV+. Horgan sits down with Apple News In Conversation host Shumita Basu to talk about bringing realistic women onscreen, the delicate balance of writing comedy and drama, and why menopause might be the most challenging life stage of all.
NEW! The 40's Stretch - Stretch Marks with Sinéad O'MoorePlease welcome my second guest, Laura Nolan Horgan, founder of LNH Edit, mother of 3 and BRCA gene warrior who in her early 30's said no thanks to Ovarian and Breast cancer and underwent a Salpingo Double Ooverectomy, full hysterectomy which removed her ovaries, fallopian tubes, cervix, womb and double mastectomy - and while this saved her life, it also plunged her straight into surgical menopause. Laura shared her story on Georgie's Good Glow podcast 4 years ago which gives a really good insight into her BRCA Gene story and well worth a listen - but here, with the grace of time and distance from this traumatic life grenade, Laura shares the hormonal impact thereafter. We talk about HRT, how Menopause and Women's Health specialist, Dr. Deirdre Lundy brought her back to life, reclaiming her sense of womanhood and the lessons every woman should know from someone who had to learn the hard way, far far too young. Supported by Key For Her - Their two-step supplement includes two unique blends to support your daily wellness and help naturally alleviate the symptoms associated with menstruation, perimenopause and menopause.Use the discount code STRETCH for 20% off your first order across all products on keyforher.com "The 40's Stretch" is a Stretch Marks Production,Hosted by Sinéad O'Moore, produced by The Brand Story and sound edited by Alan Breslin.Contact: stretchmarkspod@gmail.comhttps://www.instagram.com/stretchmarkspodcast/ Hosted on Acast. Sharon Horgan has a resume packed with award-winning comedy, but when it came to crafting Bad Sisters (Apple TV+, November 13) she had to find the right balance. That's because “a very difficult subject matter,” about Irish sisters who plot to murder the abusive husband of one of the women, had to “sit alongside quite a farce.” Adapted from a Belgian series, Horgan took “some of the murders out, and I put more of the sisters in, and more of the effects watching your family member go through this.” “I think you can take chances in the script with where you choose to have a laugh or to release the pressure, or just have something really sort of out-and-out stupid.” Now in its second season, even though that husband is out of the way, after the Peabody Award-winning and Emmy-nominated first season, that doesn't mean things have gotten easier for the sisters. “Life just doesn't become hunky-dory, you've got this poison you're still carrying it around.” For Horgan, she's particularly proud that she was able to find that delicate balance of tone.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
Ed Horgan is a founding member of the Shannon Watch campaign and has been monitoring the use of Shannon Airport and Irish airspace by the US military over the course of the last 25 years. Ed is a former Commandant and former UN Peacekeeper and has consistently highlighted the illegality and breaches of Irish and international law as the US continue to use Shannon airport for the transport of troops, munitions, and equipment. In this episode we discuss Irish complicity in the genocide in Palestine on account of the Irish governments refusal to search or stop Shannon being used for the purposes of the US military. We also touch on Irish neutrality and the shift towards becoming a NATO country, as well the current situation in Lebanon with regards to the UNIFL and the steady escalation of hostilities of Israeli forces towards the presence of the UN Peacekeeping force. Most American shoppers may be unfamiliar with the name, but if you've spent any amount of time shopping cosmetics in Australia or New Zealand then there's a pretty good chance that you've walked through the doors of one of MECCA's 110 locations. Essentially disrupting the paradigm of how retailing was done in the beauty industry in the late ‘90s, Jo Horgan started from scratch with a revolutionary idea that has continued to be successful to this day. Bypassing big conglomerate cosmetics giants, MECCA from the beginning has focused on exciting new up-and-coming brands, nurturing them into household names, and providing customers with better options and more choice. Currently dominating the Australian beauty market, and attracting the attention of the ever-elusive young customer, MECCA has become a monument of best practices the world over. Due to the fact that Nordstrom is not a direct competitor, we've had the great opportunity to share in a mutually beneficial long-standing relationship with Jo and her team to share our collective wisdom and to help improve each other's businesses. In this episode of the Organized Coach Podcast, I discuss organizing your closet and creating a wardrobe with insights from guest Sarah Horgan. Sarah is a full-time working mom + wife who lived with clutter and found her way to the other side. She radically changed her own life after a stage 4 cancer diagnosis. Forced to examine everything, including her perfectionism and people-pleasing, she realized all the stuff (and not just the physical stuff) was standing in her way of living her life, her way. After embracing minimalism and finding her way to simplicity, Sarah started Simple + Intentional to support other women in doing the same. She encourages and inspires others through her blog, Instagram account, and podcast. Sarah lives in Toronto with her husband and daughter. She loves the outdoors, a strong cup of tea, and is following her dream of writing a book! In this episode, Sarah shares her personal journey. She emphasizes that decluttering is not about the stuff but about understanding our buying behaviors and the psychology behind clutter. We focus on the importance of an organized wardrobe, offering practical tips for decluttering and organizing clothes to reduce decision fatigue and enhance personal style. We also delve into the relationship between our belongings and self-perception, advocating for a mindful approach to consumerism and the benefits of a minimalistic lifestyle. Sarah provides specific strategies for building a versatile, comfortable, and loved wardrobe that aligns with personal style and body image, ultimately promoting self-care and a more organized life. Some things to listen for that really impacted me: Don't start your day with negative thoughts. You can't out-organize too much stuff. Decluttering and organizing is a form of self-care. Clutter is never about the stuff. It's about our buying behaviors, our emotions, and our comfort. Our brains are wired for scarcity. We are teaching our brains to think differently. Sarah defines an organized wardrobe in three parts. You can declutter for real, or you can fake it. This will help you get started! Depending on your season, take it as far as you have the capacity to. Don't be tempted to buy things that are "okay." Invest in "amazing." From our conversation, I'm doing the following to create an easy closet I love to walk into every morning: Choosing my favorite items - analyze what I love about them. Decluttering my closet by category. (jeans, tanks, t-shirts) Managing my impulsivity. Being okay with the wait. Practicing the pause. Adding a tab to my Idea Tracker with brands I love, things I want to invest in (missing pieces of a minimalistic wardrobe), etc. The key moments in this episode are: 02:46 The Journey of Transformation: Sarah Horgan's Story 08:23 Decluttering: The First Step to an Organized Wardrobe 11:26 Creating a Personalized and Organized Wardrobe 20:33 Exploring Personal Style and Wardrobe Choices 26:26 Finding Your Style: The Journey Begins 26:53 The Time and Research Behind Personal Style 28:02 Exploring Sustainable Fashion and Investment Pieces 29:16 The Benefits of Secondhand Shopping and Customization 30:01 Patience Pays Off: Building a Wardrobe You Love 36:41 Reducing Decision Fatigue: Organizing Your Closet for Ease 38:53 Navigating Sales and Marketing Traps 43:21 Self-Care Through Wardrobe: Decluttering and Self-Love Connect with Sarah Horgan: Website Instagram Podcast Intentional Living Bundle Books Sarah mentions: Everything That Remains The Organized Mind Scarcity Brain (the scarcity loop) Project 333: The Minimalist Fashion Challenge That Proves Less Really Is So Much More Brands Sarah mentioned: Save 10% on your color profile with Color Guru with code SIMPLECOLOR Athleta Miik Eileen Fisher - the 12 shapes - The planner feature could be used to visualize getting pieces elsewhere.
